LIFESTYLE LETTER
Looking inward.
January 2023 PUBLISHER
Mike Tucker | MTucker@CityLifestyle.com EDITOR
Chelsea Lyn Agro | Chelsea.Agro@CityLifestyle.com
If you look at something long or hard enough you'll find imperfections time and time again. There's always something that you think you could've done better or executed in a different way, and that sentiment can be pervasive, affecting our parenting, business ownership, artistry—everything. So, perfection isn't always the best goal. Often, what we are really after is the bigger picture, the overall sense of pride evoked through the continuous and meaningful work that we engage ourselves in. Every January I commit to new resolutions. I love resolutions. I take inventory of what worked and what didn't from the previous year and I make a few goals for myself for the fresh days and months to come. This year, selfcare and being more present hold much more importance in my life. But these things kick up murky feelings of guilt or anxiety because, let's face it, when we're not doing something, we're thinking of all the things that we could be doing. Self-care feels selfish and being selfish feels wrong. But being more intentional with my self-care is a foolproof way of filling my cup on a daily basis so I can be who I need to be in my personal and professional life, for others, for the greater good. That feels worthwhile, doesn't it? I enjoy really diving into a project, like spontaneously baking cookies from scratch or tearing apart the linen closet on a gloomy day. These things may feel insignificant, but starting small is really the way one shapes their entire existence. If we care deeply for those we love at home, and do little things that make each day feel more fluid and purposeful, those little ways of doing become routine and provide practice for the way we handle the bigger things. Stressful or scary things become less daunting when we put down our phone and take a bath or make ourselves a cup of tea or a foamy latte. It isn't so much procrastination as it is readying our minds and bodies for a big moment. By being more gentle with ourselves in overwhelming times, we are stronger and more eager during the times that we need to be. If you need a cue to start paying attention to that voice within, here it is. Indulge and delight in all this year has to offer.

LUXURY REIMAGINED
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHELSEA LYN AGRO
The Green O invites you to a completely curated experience

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLNE S S
The storybook stage of the Green O presents a still and peaceful season. There are squirrels scampering up the thick bark of towering pines, woodpeckers drumming their bills, and the evergreen setting invites the many dresses of nature as she blows, howls, or quietly hums. Our senses, though, aren’t accustomed to this level of intricacy anymore. There are children or grandchildren to look after, a television steadily spewing information, and the constant
fading in and out of nearby traffic despite our mountain town dwelling. The sweet sounds of nothing-yet-everything that surrounds us is lost. This adults-only luxury retreat, set on the southern edge of The Resort at Paws Up, is an ode to everything we yearn for but have merely forgotten. The long drive to the gates of the Green O is the perfect amount of decompression time to shed the weight of our responsibilities. In
my case, it has been a toddler’s round-the-clock needs and desires for two years and counting. There are moments of calm that I relish: a scheduled massage, a soak in the hot tub, a hot cup of coffee on the mornings when I wake before my husband. But moments with him that don’t also entail the soft static of a baby monitor are far few and far between. And marriages, just like our mountain lifestyles, need to be realigned with the heart of purpose. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/MI SSO UL AVA L L E Y

Unlike other resorts, the Green O does something special that makes your eyes widen and your senses heighten, like a seamless magic trick performed by well-versed hands. Everything from the circular composition of the design-forward Haus accommodations to the multi-course tasting menu, right down to the delicate details that align with the refreshing twist on modern architecture, are all working behind the scenes to pull forth the grandiose feeling of nature and purity. The main event, and the real reason for booking, is the eight-act menu. Like each day in Montana, it is never the same. The Social Haus resembles a lean-to where we can imagine small villages or families gathered from their nearby homes to share the warmth of each other’s company as well as carefully foraged but largely uncomplicated meals. With a backdrop of Ponderosa pines and far-off mountain silhouettes, you feel like you have actually arrived in this mirage of yesteryear. You have truly gotten away from it all by simply arriving. There is none of the formality or big production splashiness that is characteristic of most luxurious dining experiences. And it’s planned this way, to bring the outside in, to keep the crisp serenity of the surrounding scene with you as you enter. With rounded plush seating pointing you toward a mesmerizing flame, you can’t help but notice the faces of those who are fortunate enough to share this space. Behind a curved bar, chefs season meat and cook sauces, skillfully plating them in near synchronicity as guests watch from the barstools. Chef Brandon Cunningham packs a glittering resume lined with the names of acclaimed establishments but it is here, behind that bar, where his creativity and intuition are as expansive as our landscape. Food has no need for distortion and senseless mutation within his kitchen. The real delight and challenge comes from honing the natural flavor of carefully selected ingredients and reimagining them in a way that brings their best qualities to a satisfying mouthful. The menu consists of short phrases or two unlikely words paired together that pique curiosity: prawn & cucumber. Sturgeon & squash. Venison & xo. Receiving the menu is a conversation starter that gets the senses stirring. When the last detail is secured, the plate is then escorted right to your table by the chef who made it. As it is placed in front of you, a rich description of its process and execution is given in just enough detail that sets the stage for a divine culinary experience. This intimacy is inimitable. In a world where our dining-out experience separates the chef from the guest, the Social Haus bridges this lost treasure of personal connection. And before we know it, the plate is clean. And if

no one is looking—maybe even better if they are—you lick any remains and patiently wait for the next plate to arrive. Vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians, and carnivores can rejoice over the limitless nature of this kitchen. After the final act, usually a sweet and balanced bite prepared or inspired by pastry chef Krystle Swenson, an unimposing lighted path will guide you uphill to, in my experience, a childhood-dream-becomes-adult-reality tree house. The Tree Haus is elevated 23 feet in the air and offers two stories of living space. As you ascend the spiral staircase to the master bedroom suite, the floor-to-ceiling windows allow an unbelievable vantage point for admiring the swaying forest. This elevation off the forest floor offers a fresh perspective, allowing us to feel reawakened to the beauty around us. The other woodland hideaways tastefully embrace the picturesque hillside with clever design choices. Even appliances are inconspicuous so as to not disrupt the flow or feel of each space. In a place that seems to effortlessly meld the outdoors with interior, it’s no surprise that the Green O is
committed to sustainability and local supplies, despite worldly influence. Building sites were carefully chosen to wedge themselves among the trees, so much so that less than a dozen mature pines were lost in the two-year construction of the resort. A playful yet practical touch are the mountain bikes that are provided to each Haus for transportation, and more importantly, to stretch our stomachs for another chorus of meals throughout the stay. If the culinary experience wasn’t enough—believe me, it is—there are adventure opportunities to let loose on some of the wildest terrain in the treasure state. Subject to change from season to season, the Green O offers horseback riding, guided fly-fishing, shooting sports like archery, paintball, or clay target shooting, hot air balloon rides that allow vistas of the Swan Range, Garnet Mountains, and the Bob Marshall Wilderness, snowmobiling, ATV tours, and a skyline aerial adventure park, just to name a few. Newest to the list of hard-to-choose adventures is the one-of-a-kind experience to ride a MoonBike, which is only available as a winter activity. MoonBikes are the world’s first electric CONTINUED >

snow bike, which has zero emissions and allows guests an exciting new way to cherish the magical monochromatic season. The addition of this activity is another thoughtful way of offering more without creating a disturbance to the beauty and wildlife that occupies the 37,000-acre property. If you want to feel part of an exclusive club, a MoonBike date with your special someone on unspoiled land will grant you a memory of a lifetime as this dual resort property is the only space in North America to have these. Whether it’s just a few nights or an entire week, the Green O will leave you speechless, rested, and fed. The main pieces of the puzzles are there to pull you into the portrait of peacefulness itself, but it’s in the details where you’ll find yourself restored and rejuvenated. A favorite moment for me was waking up in the soft light and remembering there was a box of treats and hot beverages, specifically made to my preferences, waiting for my husband and I downstairs. Toss on a plush robe, slip on your cozy slides, and follow the spiral of the stairs down to your treasures. Any day that begins with the surprise of a delicate pastry followed by a smooth swig of coffee is sure to bring joy and indulgence. It's that feeling of being cared for, which is so easily forgotten in our adulthood without the remarkable reminder that the Green O provides.

NURSE PRACTITIONER FRANCIENNE GRANTSARIS INTRODUCES US TO HORMONE PELLET THERAPY
ARTICLE BY FRANCIENNE GRANTSARIS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIKA SPAULDING

EXP E RT H E LP | PR OFESS I ONAL S E RVI CE S
At FG Aesthetics and Medicine, we offer bioidentical hormone pellet therapy, which consists of compounds that have the exact same chemical and molecular structure as hormones that are produced in the human body. In addition to testosterone and estrogen therapy, thyroid hormone is also essential to overall hormone balance. Therefore, thyroid function is also discussed and monitored to determine if thyroid replacement is needed. Hormone therapy by pellet implantation has been used with great success in the United States, Europe, and Australia since 1938 and has been found to be superior to other methods of hormone delivery. Pellets deliver consistent levels of hormones and avoid the fluctuations of hormone levels seen with other methods of delivery like pills, creams, gel, and synthetic injections. Hormones delivered by subcutaneous implants bypass the liver decreasing the risk of blood clots. It does not adversely affect blood pressure, glucose, or liver function. In fact, it has been shown to improve cholesterol levels and provide positive benefits to the cardiovascular system. It also increases bone density and prevents bone loss. The benefits associated with bioidentical hormones are both evidence-based and deemed safe. Medical consultation and laboratory studies are required and offered in our clinic to determine if you are a candidate for hormone replacement therapy. Pellet implantation is done as a simple office procedure under local anesthesia. The compounded pellet is inserted under the fatty lining of the skin in the lower abdomen or upper buttocks through a very small incision. The pellets cannot be felt under the skin. These pellets last for three to four months in women and five to six months in men. Some patients begin to feel symptoms of relief in five to seven days. The pellets dissolve fully and do not need to be removed. Our medical provider has been trained extensively for hormone replacement therapy and implantation. Optimizing hormone levels has shown to improve symptoms connected to menopause and andropause that include but aren’t limited to mood swings, irritability, joint pain, fatigue, and difficulty losing weight. Studies have also demonstrated that optimizing hormones can help prevent age-related diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes, osteoporosis, and coronary disease.

Off to a Running Start Fresh powder underfoot. Snow gently falling from bare or needled tree limbs. Sucking in the ice-cold air of a new year. This is a familiar January scene for dad-and-daughter duo Luke and Peyton Walters who run together every week, all year long, despite the extreme conditions that winter can offer. In fact, January is when this whole running habit took hold. “We go sledding a lot and I just couldn’t get up a hill. I was super tired, I was way overweight, and I just knew I needed to do something,” said Luke. Inspired by some friends, he spontaneously laced up his shoes
in zero-degree weather and hit the trail at Waterworks Hill with his buddies. “I just wanted to live a healthier life. I fell in love with it,” he admitted. A short time later, Luke entered his first 5K: Run Wild Missoula’s Run for the Luck of It race. “I wasn’t expecting much. I did it with a buddy and Peyton came down to support me and she saw me finish and, I don’t know, something just triggered in her and she just said, ‘I want to do that.’” What was it about seeing Dad cross the finish line that sparked a desire for Peyton to run alongside him? “He has such a happy face

when he runs, and it makes me feel happy when he’s happy so it’s really fun to run with him because he’s always so happy when he does it with me.” That’s a whole lot of happy, and it’s no surprise that seeing someone else’s joy sparks joy in ourselves. Exercise can be electric, especially when it’s done in the company of those we love. At that time, Peyton was only 7 years old. Now, as an 11-year-old, she runs between 17 and 25 miles per week. In November, Peyton completed the Mount Jumbo Elk Ramble 15K with Dad beside her. She placed first in her age group with an 11-minute lead despite being the youngest runner of the day. But running at her impressive pace takes dedication and sacrifice. “You know at first it was really tough because she wanted to do it and there’d be some times when I’d be like, ‘Well, I’m going for a run,’ and she didn’t want to go, and then we’d be having that talk about what’s important,” said Luke. “She’s so dedicated to it. The week of the race we don’t eat much junk. We eat super healthy and we try to level out her body, and for an 11-yearold that’s tough.” He explained that Peyton frequently turns down celebratory birthday cake or donuts at school, which isn’t a common sacrifice for kids her age. “She brings it home and freezes it for after a race. She’s very dedicated to what we need to do to get her accomplished which is just— it’s awesome. It’s amazing just to see her grow,” said Luke. Peyton has come to learn that dedication and sacrifice are small prices to pay for big rewards. "I finish a race in a really good time and it’s just so worth it to have that joy,” said Peyton. When a local race is over, Peyton, her mother Yvonne, and Luke treat themselves to Veera Donuts or they go to Cambie to celebrate. “If we’re traveling, we
always try to find something special,” said Luke. “It’s really huge to celebrate that accomplishment, just that you’re out there running, you’re out there doing something that a lot of other kids aren’t doing, a lot of people aren’t doing. You’ve got to feel proud of yourself.” And in addition to Luke’s guidance, traveling is a big part of what makes this dad and daughter relationship so special. “[Last] year we did a lot of traveling…we hit a point where we raced I think nine weekends in a row. It was a half marathon or a 5K, 10K, trail run— we were just constantly traveling, doing all these awesome races, having these awesome adventures,” said Luke. “She turned 11 early in August and she wanted to run four half marathons at the age of 10, and she accomplished that before her 11th birthday, but before she met her goal we found this race in Oregon—it’s called Bridge of the Gods—and the day before her birthday she ran that half marathon.” For Peyton, big goals mean big planning, and her dad’s encouragement goes hand-in-hand with her enthusiasm. “I ran this race called the Jackass Half Marathon, and it was my first half marathon ever,” said Peyton. “It was a really special moment because it felt so good finishing 13 miles and it’s a really pretty race. You run from Wallace to Kellogg [Idaho], and it feels like it’s mostly downhill and I love downhill. And I love the name of it,” said Peyton, snickering. Since Peyton joined Luke as a running partner, they’ve both come to experience the fruits of all this sport has to offer. Through the traveling and training, there is so much character-building that happens in those miles on the road or on the trail. Luke recalled a favorite memory that really showcased his daughter’s heart for what she does.

“Her passion is undeniable and her commitment looks to be long-lasting as she dreams up plans for her future.”
“We did the Whitefish Half Marathon. We signed up last minute and me and Peyton went up and stayed in a cabin out in the middle of nowhere. It was a really cool experience…it was a really tough run for her because she plays travel softball, too. She injured her hip the week prior so she had a hard time running it,” said Luke. But not to his surprise, Peyton persevered and produced an impressive finish despite her setback. Her passion is undeniable and her commitment looks to be long-lasting as she dreams up plans for her future. Peyton said

she will likely go to college and continue her efforts in both running and softball. As for mom and dad? They couldn’t be more proud of all she’s accomplished. “She flies down the hills. She just likes to put her arms out like an airplane. It’s just something she’s always enjoyed, and you know, through every crash and tumble she does, she still gets back up and does it,” said Luke. “She’s just been amazing,” said Yvonne, taken aback by her daughter’s passion and success. Curiosity Over Criticism WELLNESS EXPERT JAMIE LYNN OFFERS A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO ACHIEVING HEALTH GOALS Healthy diets and exercise programs work great, until they don’t. We tend to start the year with high hopes and an eager attitude, but as the winter’s talons dig a bit deeper into our frigid existence and the post-holiday blues settle in, our stamina takes a hit and it can be hard to decipher why we started in the first place. Old habits do in fact die hard. Missoula health coach Jamie Lynn understands the letdowns that come after the best plans have backfired. “People often come to me after they've tried everything. They feel defeated,” said Jamie. “I want to give people hope. It is possible and you can feel better.” Jamie’s decades of experience started with her own journey to health. “I was a single parent with two small kids at home. I ate well. I moved my body. After working with a health coach, though, I realized places that needed improvement, like my sleep and stress level.” Experiencing success in those areas inspired Jamie to become a personal

trainer and health coach. She also went back to school to become a physical therapist assistant. “I wanted to learn more about how the nervous system influences our body systems. I’m a science fanatic. I want to know the ‘why’ behind a method and find the evidence to support it,” said Jamie. With a foundation grounded in science, Jamie is able to expand her work with clients into the more nuanced realm of mindfulness. “A big part of our success is our own inner voice,” said Jamie. “We must accept and love ourselves where we are and know that we are all imperfect humans. I encourage people to be curious instead of critical.” For those who have tried everything and still haven’t seen results, becoming curious can make all the difference. Take for example one of Jamie’s clients. She had been battling a serious illness for years and was doing everything she knew to do. She ate healthy, she moved regularly. Still, her body wasn’t responding in a way she hoped for. When they first met, Jamie understood the woman’s frustration. “The things that would normally cause a change weren’t working for her,” said Jamie. “After I explained the power of curiosity, though, she became much easier on herself, much more gentle. When she tried something new and it didn’t work, instead of becoming critical or blaming herself, she would just try something else.” When it comes to exercise, Jamie teaches her clients how to let their bodies guide the pace of the work. “First, we figure out what kind of movement is comfortable and what you will actually do consistently. It doesn’t have to be hard or dramatic. Then, once that gets easier, we change it up again. We’re waiting for the brain and body to say, ‘I’m ready for more.’ It all goes back to tuning into the nervous system,” said Jamie. When creating healthy eating plans, Jamie likes to start with what her clients are already eating. “I meet people where they are at. We identify some favorite meals and figure out how we can modify them to make them healthier. We talk about what might be the biggest obstacle right now. Getting curious and focusing more on adding things, instead of taking them away, makes those changes sustainable. Then, the unhealthy things tend to go away on their own.” CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/MI SSO UL AVA L L E Y

For Jamie, Missoula has been a wonderful place to live and work. “Missoula is full of hard-working, open-minded people dedicated to themselves and their health. There are so many opportunities to eat healthy, all kinds of different exercise options, and bodyworkers to help your aches and pains." she said. No matter what health looks like for each of us, we all want the same thing: to feel good. The new year invites diet and exercise advice to come in troves, and some of that advice may help us meet our goals. However, if those external motivators fall short, we don’t need to stop there and quit or feel defeated. Jamie believes that we all have it in us to feel better and live long, happy lives. Sometimes, we just need someone to provide education, accountability and compassion along the way. “We need that support. It takes so much courage to reach out and ask for help,” said Jamie. “Let’s be curious instead of critical. Let's value progress over perfection. When we start there, the changes become easier to make.”
