bringing this animal home? After numerous attempts, I was able to stand beside him and look out across a field of gold grasses—the glorious grasses of winter— and just be close to him. The iris of his eye seemed backlit by the fading sun and we stood there in the calm between our matching breath. Touching his thick, rich coat was me walking on the moon. IN NATHAN THOMAS’S SHOP, SIMPLE STRIPS OF STEEL ARE FORGED INTO WORKS OF ART. He makes knives, and while they cut, chop and slice, their piercing beauty is most notable. Nathan spent 11 years in the United States Army before answering his calling as a craftsman. He had been collecting knives for 20 years and after retiring from the army he thought he might revel in the creation process. Nathan is quick to admit that he knew nothing about forging knives prior to trying, despite his devotion to collecting them over the years. “It’s like [enjoying] driving a car so you decide you want to build engines,” said Nathan. “I never built anything.” CONTINUED >

The thinner the blade the better it is for slicing, much like a scalpel. On the other end of the spectrum are the chopping knives with a big, thick, robust edge. They are different in their creation and form, yet it is easy to recognize Nathan’s work as each knife combines a sleek curving piece of steel, a colorful wooden handle, and Nathan’s signature “N” stamped into every blade. While it's a labor of love for Nathan, Nathan Thomas Knives is indeed a family affair. He is quick to speak of his wife, Laura, as both the current bread winner in the family and his mentor in all things social media related. “That’s what taught me that I could build a business myself. It is obvious that Bailey and Noah appreciate their parents’ efforts to be independent and never stop learning. Bailey expresses an interest in going into photography and Noah wants to make knives. Nathan has sold a few knives and he hopes this will ultimately turn into a full-time business. LOYAL COMPANION, FAMILY MEMBER, ADVENTURE BUDDY—NO MATTER WHAT NAME RINGS TRUE, ONE THING IS FOR CERTAIN: DOGS ARE MISSOULA’S BEST FRIEND. Shannon Hawthorne, creator of WanderDog Designs, always wanted to have her own business but didn’t know what that dream would look like. In 2016, while working at the Humane Society of Western Montana as the volunteer coordinator, her vision was realized upon adopting Kona—a lovable husky who pulled very hard while walking on a leash. “I was shopping around for a strong leash that also looked cool and I couldn’t find anything that I liked,” said Shannon. “I grew up riding horses and was used to using lead rope. I loved the design so I started researching how people made those leads ropes and then [made a leash] with thinner rope for my dog. I really liked it and thought that maybe others would like them, too.” WanderDog Designs was born as an account on Etsy, a community for creators who sell their goods online. Today, Shannon’s business has grown to include a large variety of products including leashes that are complete with various color rope, clamps, and lengths. Rope material ranges from the standard yacht rope to rope that is thinner and can float on the water, and clamps range from standard clasps to y-clamps and carabiners. The secret is in the simplicity—high quality materials and small-town customer service. There’s an ease and creative component to shopping local. WanderDog Designs offers custom pieces, toys and bandanas, too—all handmade. The flagship leash is the company's signature and probably the most popular item for all dog lovers because of its practical purpose and stylish look. “I splice the rope for the hand loop and the clip loop, which is a technique where I take the rope apart and stick it back in on itself,” Shannon explained. “It creates a loop without having to tie any knots or any hardware to hold it together. INSPIRED BY LIFE IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN REGION, WHISKEY LEATHERWORKS WEAVES AUTHENTIC OLD-STYLE CRAFTSMANSHIP INTO EACH HANDMADE PRODUCT. “Leather, like whiskey, improves with age,” said Daniel Earnest. He’s the co-owner of Whiskey Leatherworks alongside his wife Allyson and together they have forged a business that puts family and quality first. “When we moved to Missoula four years ago, I was looking for a hobby,” said Daniel. “I made a leather belt.” Before long, friends and family started requesting that Daniel make them leather belts, causing Daniel to expand his hobby to the garage. Once he had adequate workspace, he channeled his creativity through leather-working on a regular basis, and inadvertently began a new venture entirely. Finding American-made materials to create an all-American product was first on the list of priorities. If he was to begin creating leather products for purchase in Missoula, he wanted them to reflect things that this community treasures—timeless and true, not trendy. Searching for a metalsmith for buckles gave Daniel the opportunity to collaborate with another artist. Finding waxed canvas and a leather tannery in Chicago helped propel Daniel and Allyson’s small business into a successful worldwide direct sales marketplace, allowing Daniel to quit his job as an environmental consultant and spend more time with his family.
“Our products needed to be rugged and refined, reflecting our love of the American West. These goods had to pair equally with a pheasant hunting trip and sipping whiskey at the local distillery,” said Daniel. “This was to be a company that brought together family and friends through the love of common values and appreciations.” With Allyson’s marketing skills, this family business is a sustainable, thriving, full-time job with four employees, a shop, and above all, a way of sharing life together. “Taking leather crafting from hobby to a sustainable business has been the best thing for our daughters. Our girls—Ella, who is 13 and Margaux, who is 11—are very involved in all aspects of the business,” said Allyson. CONTINUED >

a long-term care event. However, there are options for caring for elderly parents. With planning, one can greatly enhance this stage of life from both the adult child’s point of view and the elderly parents’ point of view. The options have a tendency to be complicated, though effective, and are best chosen with advanced planning. However, when planning for the declining years, steps can be taken now that will tip the balance in favor of meeting the parents’ wishes. For example: + Nursing home insurance policies come in a variety of shapes and sizes. In the past, if one did not need to draw on the nursing home policy, the insurance company kept all premiums paid. Now companies offer hybrid policies that pay for nursing home care, but if the insured never draws on the policy, then the premiums paid will go to the insured’s heirs. + Montana has a program called the Montana Long Term Care Insurance Partnership in which a person can buy a long-term care policy and still qualify for Medicaid. In addition, the program may allow for the elderly parent to pass assets to their heirs. + A parent can pay a family member for personal services. This allows the parent to spend down towards Medicaid eligibility and simultaneously transfer money to a family member. Note that the recipient of the payments from a personal services contract must report the payments on their income tax return. + A trust may be able to provide for a parents’ elder years and preserve wealth for the parent to transfer to their children. + There are available options and strategies to reduce financial stress when planning for the elder years. The strategies are complex to implement, so engaging qualified professionals is strongly suggested.

A REFLECTION FROM ARTIST MARY DURNIN FIRTH ARTICLE DANIKA FIRTH THE LEATHER REIN HAS A FAMILIAR FEEL WHEN I GRASP IT. The sound of the horse’s hooves on the grass reminds me of my childhood riding horses in Arizona. I can smell the hay and envision the hoof-pick that I still have from days long gone. But this day, the smell of dew on the wet grass brings me back to reality as I stare out at the beautiful green fields of England. The mane of my niece’s mare shines gold in the sunlight and I’m giddy with the joy of the ride. With a tug of the rein, we head back toward the noise of the stables. I hand the reins to my niece as I swing my legs off the gentle giant and land in the mud below. Later, when the mares are turned out in the field, I watch as the two horses meet up and begin the ritualistic rubbing of noses. There’s a deep connection between them. It makes me think about all the people that I profoundly love in my life and how important those relationships are. When you love somebody, you just want to be close to them. As I depart from the field and take one final look at the mares rubbing noses, I know that when I return home, my paintbrush will be unstoppable.
