leather boots, blue jeans, a top that won’t show the dog hair that is surely embedded in my driver’s seat backrest. I purchased this hat, the game-changer, on a recent trip to New York in the town where I became a cowgirl. I was a college student then and my English background as a horseback rider was quickly transformed when I was introduced to the rodeo scene. Everything in the western realm of riding was sequence and bright and over-the-top. It was all collared shirts tucked behind blinged-out belts and the hats were works of art. I was smitten. I haven't lost this favored fit of clothing through the years but a baseball cap

It had the pinched top to resemble a classic western shape but a wide brim that gave a polite nod to modern fashion and all at once, I had arrived. It’s my little black dress, my glass slipper, my go-to.

Corn Fritters with Bacon, Jalapeño & Cheese We’re down to our last days of farm fresh local sweet corn, so now’s the time to stir up a batch of these easy-to-prepare, delicious fritters. They’re terrific as an appetizer or as a main dish. 2 cups corn kernels 1/2 cup cornmeal 1/4 cup bread crumbs 1 egg 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese 1/4 cup cream cheese, at room temperature 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded & finely diced 2 slices bacon, cooked & crumbled 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 1 teaspoon ground coriander 2 green onions, chopped 1/3 cup chopped cilantro 1 teaspoon salt 1 lime, zest & juice Vegetable oil, for frying Mix all of the ingredients, except oil, in a large bowl until well combined. Use enough cornmeal and breadcrumbs to bind mixture so it will hold together to form patties. Heat skillet over medium-high heat and add oil to generously coat the bottom of the pan, about 1/8” deep. Take 1/4-cup scoops of mix and form patties. Cook patties in hot oil until golden brown on both sides, about 2 - 3 minutes per side. Serve with your favorite ranch or blue cheese dip, salsa or guacamole. YIELD: 4 servings

I made my entrepreneurial vision a reality and launched Lumin in October of 2016. I love making jewelry. L E IG H CAR O P P OL I I have always been drawn to crystals for their beauty and metaphysical properties. I was first exposed to them by my mother, an energetic and potent woman. I’ve been wearing crystal jewelry to help attract positive energy and manifest my intentions for several years. Upon going vegan, I realized that many of the pieces of jewelry I had been wearing contained materials that didn't align with my morals, like deerskin and leather. I first made some pieces for myself and found the process very natural and engaging. I created more pieces and was proud of them, having gone about them in an organic way by just allowing the materials to come together without researching how. I curate many of the crystals I use from the Crystal Limit in downtown Missoula and from Bathing Beauty Beads on the hip strip. I’m always finding new supplies and materials to experiment with. BLAIR ANN CISLO Pheasant feathers, that’s how my business gained its wings. My husband, James, is a hunter and two years ago I started to save the feathers from all of his upland and waterfowl hunts. I like to mark the year they were harvested, the location, and the hunter that did the harvesting. This year I finally got my own flock of chickens, and I have recently been using their feathers in my creations. Using feathers in my work is an ode to my late sister. She and I would make all sorts of creations with feathers that people gave to her and I didn’t want to lose that gift, adding my own spin as I got older. I love being able to offer huntresses a different, perhaps more fun, way of remembering their hunt other than taxidermy. W I L L I A M K E L LY It all started with a little pink sapphire found in the rough of Philipsburg. After decades of landscaping with large rocks, it was an easy transition to the small, shiny stones of our landscape. Sterling silver, copper, white gold, yellow gold—you name it, I work with it. When deciding on what material to use with a given stone, I typically find that the stone often asks for a certain setting. My true passion comes through creating heirloom pieces, collaborating with the client to develop the design based on the material, the importance of different stones, and what kind of use the piece will see. It’s not uncommon to repurpose stones and material from other rings and pendants. I once created a mother’s ring, using three generations of wedding rings. "AS FAR AS I CAN REMEMBER, I DRESSED THE SAME WAY BACK IN THE 80S." That was Norm Carey's humble humor coming out from under his cotton polo and relaxed khakis. Norm has sported his unofficial bowler uniform since Westside Lanes & Fun Center opened its doors in 1983. Thirty-five years ago, Norm and his partner, Gordon Jensen, broke ground on the corner of Wyoming and Catlin streets. "We owned the lot, and we knew that we would do something with it someday," Norm explained. "He

Pinch Flat Manufacturing is in its third year of business, but Jeremy was first introduced to leather work about six years ago through a good friend. The evolution of his Pinch Flat products is a process of creating a new project, testing it, refining it, refining it, and refining it until he knows for sure that it stands up to his standards. As of late, Jeremy has delved into the world of waxed canvas goods, too. After all, leather and waxed canvas are products that only get better with age. “I like to joke they're ‘like a fine wine.’ I want that product to be able to hold up to an endless life of patina, and take on a wear and tear that tells a story,” said Jeremy.
