The fur in family. I WAS FINALLY, TECHNICALLY, ABLE TO REFER TO HAVING ‘KIDS’ THE EVENING THAT MY GOAT HAD TWIN BOYS, EVEN THOUGH I’D BEEN CALLING EACH OF MY ANIMALS BABY FOR YEARS. They were still damp from their welcome into the world when I scooped both of them into my arms and breathed in their warmth. Their long, white ears, their velvet noses, the perfect swirl of their fur—I had fallen madly, deeply in love with my role as ‘farm mom’ all over again. When it came time to sell one of them, I wept. I regretted every step I’d taken in weaning him from his mother and leaving him, cheerfully bouncing along with new friends because selfishly, I wouldn’t believe that someone could care for him the way I would. I imagined it similar to those mothers who’ve said their goodbyes to their freshman college goers—my baby. I feel this way with all animals. After all, my caring for them is the least I can do for all they do for me. At the end of a long, hot August day, they make me dig for more. We leash up and head to the river. When the wind howls in the hollow of winter, I bundle up and scan the pasture for their faces. When I’m out in the mountains with the

heel-kicking of horses tearing through the grass, or my miniature pinscher, Piper, terrorizing the cat, the Labradors, and anything that moves a muscle for that matter. They are the hardest, most rewarding work I’ve ever known, and I wouldn’t, couldn’t, live this life any other way.

Brown Rice & Bean Burgers with Lemon Tarragon Spread Don’t let the carnivores at the party taste these burgers. For sure they’ll be stealing ‘em from the vegetarians at the table. Best to just double the recipe and let everyone dig in. 1 tablespoon olive oil, for sauté 1/2 cup, each, finely chopped yellow onion & red bell pepper 1 teaspoon minced fresh garlic 1/8 teaspoon turmeric 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 cup cooked and cooled brown rice 1 cup canned garbanzo beans, drained 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley 1 cup bread crumbs 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper Heat oil in sauté pan. Sweat the onion, bell pepper and garlic for two minutes. Add turmeric and tomato paste. Sauté 30 seconds, while stirring. Remove from heat and let cool. Add cooled rice, cooled onion mixture and garbanzo beans to bowl of food processor. Pulse until well chopped and combined. Add parsley, bread crumbs, salt and pepper. Pulse to combine. Remove to medium bowl and hand mix to ensure thorough blending. Mixture should be slightly moist and should hold together to form patties. Form into six equal burgers, then place them on an oiled sheet pan. Spray top of patties with oil and bake in 425° oven until cooked through. If desired, top with a slice of your favorite cheese and heat until cheese melts. Serve burgers on lightly toasted bread with a dollop of Lemon Tarragon Spread. (See recipe below.) For extra zing, top with fresh arugula. YIELD: 6 servings To prepare the Lemon Tarragon Spread, whisk together: 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup Greek yogurt 2 tablespoons chopped fresh tarragon 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

Society of Western Montana. Lola was 10 weeks old and Bentley was fostered at five weeks old. I knew the day he came home that I had instantly failed at fostering! Lola and Bentley have never been apart from that day on. I became Hudson’s mama in 2010 when he was born prematurely at 25 weeks gestation and weighing only 12 ounces. He is truly my miracle. I am blessed to be his Mom and to witness such determination and happiness in everything that he does. WHO ARE LOLA AND BENTLEY? WHAT ARE THEIR PERSONALITIES? Bentley is definitely the guardian. He keeps watch every minute, and has always been a pacer. I imagine that he has his hourly routine around the perimeter of the yard to sniff out any changes. Bentley is always easy going and laid back. I am sure that if he could speak he would tell me everything that went on in the neighborhood that day. Lola has a job. Her job is following Hudson and me around everywhere. She keeps watch in the bathroom, doing laundry, in the closet, wherever and whatever. I imagine that Lola remains close to her comfortable bed in the garage and her large dish of fresh water. Besides her people, and Bentley, these are highly important in Lola’s world. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU'VE LEARNED FROM LOLA AND BENTLEY? I believe that dogs are angels here on Earth to teach us what is important in life. They define unconditional love, loyalty, faith, forgiveness, gratefulness, and protection of those we love. Their souls are pure and loving and their spirit is forgiving of all. My dogs have been a reminder to be grateful for every day and of all the blessings that surround me. They have taught me to slow down and appreciate the important things in life. They always make us laugh, they are really good at listening, love to snuggle, and someday when I can no longer hear their nails clicking down the hallway, they will surely make me cry. SAMMIE + KYSTLE DOWNING Age: Sammie, 13 HOW DID SAMMIE BECOME PART OF THE FAMILY? Nearly two years ago, Sammie came to the family from Tails as Old as Time, a senior dog rescue that finds forever foster homes for senior dogs for the rest of their lives, covering medical costs as well. He became a "failed foster" after about nine months before I officially adopted him. We had a big adoption party! WHAT'S THE FUNNIEST THING SAMMIE DOES? He's my little Mr. Magoo. He doesn't see or hear very well so following him around and keeping him out of trouble can be a full-time job. He normally never makes a sound but when I come home from work he cries and whines and carries on until I pick him up to cuddle him. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING A DOG OWNER? I feel so loved and so needed. This little dog has been through so many homes in his life and yet he still got really attached to me and that makes me feel special. Giving him the best retirement is very important to me. I try and take him to do as much stuff as possible even though he's so old and slow. Giving him a happy life is my other full-time job!

and my boyfriend, Jeb's last name (Myren). His first name is inspired by beer. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE OR FUNNIEST MEMORY? Our favorite memory starts as a terrible one. We left Barley with trusted friends while we traveled to Oregon to see family for Christmas. The second morning, Barley took an opportunity to slip out the door with the cat. Jeb and I turned back around and returned to Missoula. Three very cold nights went by. It was hard not to worry about him. On Christmas Day, we received a call from a woman living in Pattee Canyon. Barley had just been in her backyard playing briefly with her dog! Within a minute of us calling for him, he sauntered out of the woods and once he realized it was really us, he was thrilled and so were we. So many people in our community cared and were as excited as we were to have him back home. WHAT'S SOMETHING THAT YOU LET BARLEY DO BUT DON'T REALLY WANT HIM TO DO? Barley loves to sit on Jeb's lap. At about 100 pounds, he's very large to be a lapdog. He is so happy though that Jeb lets him jump up.

MEET YOUR LOCAL TALENT IN THEATER ELLA MCMILLION’S SMILE IS A CONTAGIOUS ONE. Her energy swells reaching every corner of any room, which is probably the reason why audiences love to see her on stage. Ella has been performing in Missoula Community Theatre productions since she was 8 years old. Now at age 17, a soon-to-be senior at Loyola Sacred Heart High School, she is pursuing her dreams to become a professional performer in musical theater. This summer she participated in a six-week intensive musical theater camp to help her prepare for auditions for colleges and productions this fall. Theater became an avenue for Ella the day that Alicia Bullock Muth, Ella’s choir teacher, encouraged her to audition for Oliver. It wasn’t long before Ella took to the stage in productions like The Wizard of Oz, Christmas Carol the Musical, Mama Mia, and Tarzan, honing her talent and tending to her heart’s desire. Her first lead role was as Ariel in The Little Mermaid earlier this year, describing it as "extremely exciting" to be part of the iconic, animated movie that was brought to life through theater. In addition to performing for the Missoula Community Theatre, Ella dances with the Ballet Arts Academy and the Downtown Dance Collective here in Missoula, both of which have inspired Ella to expand her interests on stage and in life. As for free time (as if she isn't busy enough!), Ella loses herself in reading and writing. On her shelf or in her hands is likely the Harry Potter series because, well, according to Ella, it’s always worth rereading. 34
