Be Your Best You. SOME PEOPLE SAY AN ENTIRE LIFE CAN CHANGE IN A MOMENT. That’s true for me, but it took a few moments over the course of a few years to get me on the path I carry down now. I suffered a stroke about five years ago—the twisted recipe of high cholesterol, genetics, and a copious amount of stress. I counted on alcohol to hold me up, combat the stress, relieve it the way one takes an aspirin for a headache, so I checked myself into alcohol rehab. Not long after that, I was in an auto accident and suffered a concussion. Before I could count the cards stacked against me, I saw my health diminishing, fast. My decisions were ways of deflection, not solving. To me, the stories within this issue are giving credit where credit is due—to those who are striving for their best life, like I do today.

Wishes Do Come True Henry Becker got his wish, thanks to Make-A-Wish Montana. The wish reveal was a fun affair, filled with gratitude, friends and family, happy tears, and pizza. Initially, his wish was to take a trip, which he soon realized would end. A tree house, however, could be the site of many adventures he, his siblings Lydia and Liam, and friends could take. He wished for—and got—a tree house! PHOTOGRAPHY DANIELLE M. ANTONETTI

Missoula Valley Lifestyle | January 2018
RISING TO THE OCCASION DURING A MONTANA WINTER SOMETIMES MEANS KNEELING ON THE FLOOR BEFORE THE OVEN AND WATCHING A SOFT CLOUD OF DOUGH BLISTER INTO A FLAKY, GOLDEN BROWN DOME OF PERFECTION. There’s just something about fresh baked bread that will always be magical to me, especially following an invigorating ski through the woods. Baking bread isn’t as intimidating as it sounds. It’s putting together a few ingredients and letting some yeast work its magic. Then, voilà—a beautiful, fragrant, delicious loaf. The fragrance that wafts through my little kitchen will always remind me of home. Growing up, my mom seemed to constantly be baking bread. I fondly remember moments when she’d let us know the bread was done, still warm, and offer us a thick slab, topped with rich melted butter and a dollop of honey. I like to call this the "Homemade Bread for Really Busy People" recipe, but its more formal title is Easy Rustic Dutch Oven No-Knead Crusty Bread. Yes, it’s a mouthful, but a good one. It’s an easy, quick recipe for those who don’t have extra time on their hands, or for anyone who doesn’t want to spend a lot of time mussing in the kitchen. So go ahead, enjoy! Let your guests think you toiled over this bread. EASY RUSTIC DUTCH OVEN NO-KNEAD CRUSTY BREAD INGREDIENTS 3 cups unbleached, all-purpose flour 1 3/4 teaspoons Kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon instant or rapid-rise yeast 1 1/2 cups water INSTRUCTIONS In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and yeast. Add water to the dry ingredients and mix with a spatula until a shaggy consistency forms and any dry flour is no longer visible. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or with a reusable silicone cover and set aside for 12 to 18 hours at room temperature. Overnight on a countertop is perfect. When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 450 degrees. When preheated, place a cast iron pot with a lid in the oven and heat the pot and lid for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, pour the dough onto a heavily floured surface and gently shape into a ball by tucking edges of the dough under and toward the center. You can either do this with your fingers or a spatula. Transfer the dough to some parchment paper. Do not adjust the dough on the parchment after placing it, so as not to inadvertently incorporate parchment into the bottom of the loaf. Cover dough with plastic wrap and let sit while the pot and lid are heating. Remove hot pot and lid from the oven and drop in the dough and parchment. The parchment will get a bit brown and fragile; that’s okay! Cover and return to oven for 30 minutes. After, remove the lid and bake an addi-

AS A MONTANA RANCH MANAGER, I’M PROBABLY NOT YOUR TYPICAL PILATES PRACTITIONER. I WOULD WAGER THAT THERE AREN’T MANY PEOPLE IN THE RANCHING COMMUNITY WHO PRIORITIZE A WEEKLY PILATES WORKOUT, BUT I DO. My commitment to weekly workouts with Alison Laundrie at Move Missoula Pilates and Barre Studio has helped me to remain physically strong and flexible enough to continue to live the life I love. I’ve realized that Pilates is for everyone, even cowboys. I began practicing Pilates four years ago after I suffered severe back pain from a herniated disc that kept me out of work. Admittedly, I was floor bound for multiple weeks. After resting my back and working to heal it naturally through acupuncture and chiropractic sessions, I still had a weak back and core. It was a hard stone to swallow—accepting that the physical demands of my job, which I had been able to perform with ease before, could no longer be approached so cavalierly. Having been strong and fit my entire life, my body was no longer going to let me take it for granted. I was concerned that swinging a saddle onto a horse’s back or contorting my body into some awkward position to repair a piece of equipment might trigger another painful episode of debilitating back pain. Other than passing references, I hadn’t really heard much about Pilates. Thankfully, the smart and successful women in my life sung its praises—told me that I needed to give it a try. I’ve never been a class or group exercise guy. The fact that it was only women who were cajoling me into this was, indeed, my first hurdle. I was surprised to learn that Pilates was an exercise started by a man— Joseph Pilates—as physical rehabilitation for himself and other soldiers returning from WWI. This bit of knowledge gave me the reassurance that was necessary for me to take that first step into the studio and deflect the sideways looks from my male friends when I told them I was going to my Pilates session.
Since I started Pilates, my back is strong like it ought to be. While it’s the time and dedication within the studio, it’s also a

to do it right with instructors there to make corrections and help focus energy into specific muscle groups. Conceptually, Pilates is a piece of cake. Doing it correctly and remembering how to breathe makes it a true challenge.
A co-worker asked me, “Does it work?” When I think about where I started when I first walked into Move Missoula and where I am now, I can’t afford to not do Pilates. So my answer is, "Yes, it does." January 2018 | Missoula Valley Lifestyle

EING AN ATHLETE CALLS FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS—STRENGTH IN OUR LIMBS, IN OUR CORE, IN OUR BREATHING, IN OUR BELLIES, AND WITHOUT QUESTION, IN OUR DEDICATION. It’s no wonder that our
local athletes have these qualities, and use them to not only fuel their passion but to main-
tain a healthy lifestyle, too. Two Missoulians—Tyler Turco, champion saddle bronc
rider, and Carrie Moe, runner and weight trainer—have taken their fitness to new heights. For Tyler, it’s the whiplash motion of an eight-second ride, four hooves leaping and bounding with a rowdy rodeo crowd as the backdrop. For Carrie, mother of two boys, being an athlete means keeping up with her sons in whatever sport or game they choose. It’s also meant pushing herself past comfort zones and running toward new milestones. No matter what challenges and successes lie before them, determination and dedication don’t come and go with the season. It’s all heart, every day. > CONTINUED

FITNESS ON FLEEK
(CON TI N U ED)
Tyler Turco SADDLE BRONC RIDER | AGE: 21
GIVE US THE GRUB. WHAT'S A GOOD SNAPSHOT OF YOUR DAILY NUTRITION? A lot of meat, usually wild game or beef, which provides me with a lot of protein. HOW DO YOU EXERCISE? WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR WORKOUTS? I go to the gym, run, and ride horses. The most important part of my workouts is keeping my body and muscles in good shape. They go through a lot of stress when I compete so keeping my body in shape reduces the chance of serious injury. WHAT'S YOUR GOAL AS AN ATHLETE? My short term goal is always my next ride. I like to compete to my best ability and ride each horse aggressively, one ride at a time. My long term goal is to win the Permit Finals, Big Sky Region, College Finals, and making it to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. WHAT'S THE HARDEST PART OF BEING A SADDLE BRONC RIDER? Staying healthy and riding consistently. BIGGEST SACRIFICE YOU'VE MADE AS AN ATHLETE? Being on the road. It takes me away from friends and family. Money, too. In rodeo, you have to pay to play. There are entry fees for every rodeo I compete in so when I compete I'm basically betting on myself to win. IN THE KITCHEN, WHAT'S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? Eggnog! WHAT WOULD SOMEONE BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT YOU? I hunt and fish when I'm on the road away from home. I'm also single. BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT? Winning the Mountain States Circuit Finals, which qualified me to ride in the Ram National Circuit Finals in Florida, and being the top college saddle bronc rider in the nation. CONTINUED >

Carrie Moe RUNNER & WEIGHT TRAINER | AGE: 47
GIVE US THE GRUB. WHAT'S A GOOD SNAPSHOT OF YOUR DAILY NUTRITION? I literally eat 6-8 times per day, clean and lean. Every day, I have a protein shake, greek yogurt, a chicken and vegetable bowl, rice cakes with peanut butter and jelly. I don't restrict myself from anything, except alcohol. I cook as much from scratch as possible, using organic produce and meat, and I stay away from preservatives and GMOs. HOW DO YOU EXERCISE? WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR WORKOUTS? I run and weight train five days a week, spin twice, swim once, and I try to get to yoga or barre once a week, too. The most important part of my workouts are strength training and core work. As a runner, movement is front to back. I work hard to strengthen all of the helper muscles that support my side-to-side movement and keep my core engaged in order to keep injury at bay. WHAT'S YOUR GOAL AS AN ATHLETE? Being the best version of myself, continuing to put my toe on the start line, and stepping outside of my comfort zone to see what I'm capable of. I want to be a part of whatever adventure my kids come up with. Skiing, boogie boarding, hiking, swimming, biking, cliff jumping, whatever it is, I'm in! WHAT'S THE HARDEST PART OF YOUR JOB AS A MOTHER AND YOUR BEING AN ATHLETE? Finding balance. Both of my boys swim with the YMCA swim team, which means 7-9 practices a week. With all four people in my house working out at least once a day, you wouldn't believe the laundry and cooking I do! BIGGEST SACRIFICE YOU'VE GIVEN AS AN ATHLETE? Time. Looking back, the biggest sacrifice that I have made was missing a Halloween with my boys so that I could run the New York Marathon. IN THE KITCHEN, WHAT'S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE? My mom's huckleberry pie, buttercream icing, and frosted shortbread cookies. WHAT WOULD SOMEONE BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? I didn't run a single race until after my first son was born. My husband and I moved to Missoula when I was 7 months pregnant and I joined the YMCA the next day. It is the running community and support that the Y has given me that encouraged me to start running. BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT? My marriage of almost 18 years to my husband, Shawn. He is my best friend, greatest supporter, and the love of my life. Also, raising our boys and running my first marathon with a time fast enough to qualify me to start in the sub-elite heat at the Boston Marathon.

Coaching Confessions with the Y's Kirby Beierle FOR THE RECORD, KIRBY BEIERLE IS AS COOL AS THEY COME. She’s done her time in the water, growing up as a chlorine kid, and for the last decade, she’s been head swim coach at the YMCA. She was named 2017 YMCA National Coach of the Year for her coaching style in swimming and in life, championing her swimmers on their way to success and being there for them emotionally. Her coaching style is one that knows no lanes or depths, and now it knows no secrets. Kirby gives us six coaching confessions—her wry, her inspirational, and her downright truthful.

Dr. Stephen Hardy is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only board certified for plastic and reconstructive surgery from head to toe. Certification requires several years of intense training and education in order to gain the required skills for providing the most comprehensive, ethical and competent care available for patients.
I would recommend Dr. Hardy to anyone. He’s a caring surgeon who will make sure that you feel comfortable and he’ll do whatever it takes to treat your problem. I could travel thousands of miles and would not find anybody who can do it better that he could.
