LIFESTYLE LETTER
Cheers to 2026: Walking toward our Greatest & Healthiest Selves There is something powerful about the turning of a new year. It’s an opportunity and invitation to reset, to refocus, and to step forward with intention. As we welcome 2026, our Mission Hills City Lifestyle team is thrilled to step into a new journey and year focused on health, healing, and wholeness. True health is not one-dimensional. It happens when we care for the whole person; physically, emotionally, spiritually, and financially. When one area is off, it impacts the rest. But when these pillars are aligned, we create space to live with authenticity, joy, energy, and purpose. That’s why we’re excited to introduce a brand-new monthly feature you can look forward to in every issue this year: Ask the Expert. Each month, a trusted local professional will share practical wisdom within one of the four pillars of wellness; giving you real, grounded tools to become the greatest version of yourself in 2026. We’re honored to begin this journey in January with Dr. John Humphrey and his passion for biologic dentistry. He shares a powerful message that even our oral health is connected to whole-body wellness. You won’t want to miss his expert advice! This issue also highlights incredible local leaders who are helping build a true roadmap to holistic health. From the patient-centered, compassionate care at Ascentist Group, to the empowering, whole-person approach at Dew Aesthetics & Wellness, to the inspiring strength, community, and movement found at MOJO Cycling, and the life-changing work happening at Method Pediatric Therapy. Behind the scenes, our publication is growing right alongside this mission. I’m incredibly proud of our team and would like to welcome our newest member, Operations Director: SarahElise Seidel. SarahElise brings a wealth of knowledge and years of experience. Her expertise and leadership are exceptional and will be an additional support to serve our community and partners with excellence and care. Here’s to 2026 being the year you step into the most authentic, healthy, and aligned version of yourself! Created with purpose, filled with meaning, and rooted in impact for your family and community. Cheers to the healthiest year yet!

“The wellness space Marisa Burdolski is about as approachable as a medical professional comes. From the way she incorporates warmth into her physical space to the way she creates emotional space for anything her patients might need, there is a genuine, deep care to the way she runs DEW Aesthetics and Wellness. “I wanted to create this really safe, inclusive space for women to feel themselves– to feel better, to look better, to be better, to be healthier, to have a primary care provider that they trust and also love,” Burdolski said. That is exactly what DEW has become. Burdolski is a nurse practitioner who opened her doors in downtown Shawnee after picking up a plethora of medical experience along the way. “I was already trained to be a primary care provider, already trained to do hormones, already trained to do aesthetics. I was like, “Why can’t I offer every single thing that somebody might need in the wellness space in one building?” she said. After graduating from Kansas State University, Burdolski started her career in pediatrics at Children’s Mercy, developed a passion for aesthetics on the side and incorporated hormone therapy into her skillset to help women live a fuller life, no matter their stage of life. “I’m shouting from the rooftops to anybody that will listen about how wonderful hormones are for women, not only for the way we feel, but because there are so many protective health benefits from hormones,” she said. The variety of services she and her incredible team of nurse practitioners offer stems from Burdolski’s acceptance of both traditional medical practices and the functional space. Keeping the patient at the center of all treatment allows her to make the best decisions for their health.
allows for more out of the box thinking. That’s what we need in healthcare and stop shoving patients into a box.”
“The wellness space allows for more out of the box thinking, and I think that’s what we need right now in healthcare. We should stop shoving patients into a box,” Burdolski said. “My job is to keep you healthy. Whether that is preventing disease or treating disease, my job is to make your quality of life better. It’s quality over quantity.” On an emotional level, Burdolski meets her patients where they are. Each appointment is booked for a minimum of 30 minutes, and the concept of “rushing” is nonexistent. Unpacking the full extent of her patient’s needs–physical, emotional and mental–is important to Burdolski and her team. “I am invested in your concerns,” she emphasized. “If you have a concern about your body, about your health, about something–I have a concern about that. I don’t know your body. Everything you say to me is truth. Period. I will take you at your word and try to investigate further.” CONTINUED >

As cut throat as the aesthetics industry can be, the environment at DEW is different. If there is a need Burdolski cannot meet, she is not afraid to recommend other clinics that do. Her patient-first mindset is woven into every aspect of her business, which keeps women and men coming back, time and time again. “We do a really poor job in the health care system of covering patients when we’re not the right fit for those patients. We need to get back to that patient-centered focus in healthcare,”

she said. “A lot of my patients have my personal cell phone number. If you are going to the ER, if you are going to urgent care, I want you to text me and let me know because I want to know what’s going on.” The highs and the lows–Burdolski is here for them all. Even in her own life, she understands the toll life can take on a person’s mental health. However, she continues to show up for her patients, by incorporating that compassion into her work. Now, DEW has developed a reputation as a safe haven that sees the whole person and their needs. “My jam is patient choice,” she said. “You want to do aesthetics procedures? Do them. You want to get Botox and filler? Do it. You want to get a facial once a month? Do it. You want to have hormones? Do it. Anything you can do as a person to improve your self-esteem, mood and mental health, you do that!”
“I am invested in your concerns. If you have a concern about your body, about your health, about something–I have a concern about that.” JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/MI S S I O N HI L L S

How a young professional’s vision of providing exceptional pediatric therapy became reality
A CONVERSATION WITH TAYLOR HORNBAKER Taylor Hornbaker and her team of therapists at Method Pediatric Therapy and Wellness deeply care about helping children overcome speech and physical obstacles that stand in the way of them and the whole family thriving. She desires for people to be heard and understood in whatever capacity that helps them to feel whole. This heart shines through in her explanation for starting a business as unique and personal as Method.
1. DESCRIBE YOUR PATH TO PEDIATRIC THERAPY.
My path to pediatric therapy was shaped by resilience, connection, and the deep belief that children and families flourish when they feel uplifted, understood, and supported with intention. I was raised by a woman who embodied strength and nurturing, and she taught me early how profoundly one emotional anchor can impact a child’s entire world. When I discovered speech-language pathology, I found a profession where science, compassion, intrinsic understanding, and tenacity converge. Over the past decade, I have worked
20

across multiple settings with infants through teens and developed a holistic, wellness-centered lens. I learned quickly that navigating challenges never affects only the child; it impacts the entire family unit. This understanding shaped my approach. Therapy should not be something families simply attend. It should be embedded into the rhythms of their real life so that the child grows and the family grows with them, becoming more connected, more resilient, and more equipped to thrive together.
2. WHAT LED YOU TO PURSUE OPENING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?
I founded Method Pediatric Therapy and Wellness to create an elevated, sophisticated therapy model that truly serves today’s family. My intention was to build a practice where therapists are not only highly educated but genuinely well, emotionally grounded, supported, regulated, and able to show up with authenticity and clarity. When clinicians are cared for, their interactions uplift families and accelerate progress.
Our calm, peaceful office space serves as a place of respite and a sanctuary where families can breathe and reset while their child receives therapy. We also provide in-home and community-based services for families who benefit from therapy occurring within their everyday environments.
3. WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR METHOD PEDIATRIC THERAPY?
My vision for Method is to redefine pediatric therapy through a wellness-forward, whole-family lens. We combine top-tier speech, occupational, and physical therapy with sensory regulation, nervous system alignment, mindful parenting support, and research-based wellness practices that streamline a household’s daily flow. Ultimately, Method exists to strengthen the entire ecosystem surrounding a child. We help families embed therapeutic strategies into everyday routines, transforming challenges into opportunities for deeper connection, smoother communication, and sustainable growth.
4. HOW DOES YOUR PASSION FOR WHAT YOU DO COME THROUGH EVERY DAY AT WORK? My passion is woven through every interaction and is guided by intentionality, uplift, and a deep understanding of each child’s
intrinsic motivation. I approach each session with the goal of creating a regulated, safe, and grounded environment where learning becomes natural and joyful. I believe wholeheartedly that challenges affect the whole family, not just the child. For this reason, Method embeds those challenges into the therapeutic process. We help families develop emotional resilience, clearer communication, and stronger connection. Progress for the child becomes healing, alignment, and empowerment for the entire family.
5. WHAT DO YOU WANT OUR READERS TO KNOW ABOUT YOU AND METHOD? WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER PEDIATRIC THERAPISTS?
Personally, I lead with empathy, intentionality, resilience, and tenacity, shaped by my own lived experiences. My goal is to uplift families through exceptional clinical care supported by compassion, clarity, and genuine connection. Method stands apart because we do not simply treat children. We elevate the entire family experience through wellness, connection, and intentional living. Our work is guided by the core values we embody every day: uplifting connection, whole-family wellness, resilience, intentionality, intrinsic understanding and motivation, and tenacity.

The Magic of Mojo WHY CYCLING IS FOR EVERYONE AND MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER WORKOUT ARTICLE BY VICTORIA MOORE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF EVRARD
Mojo opened 10 years ago as Kansas City’s first cycling studio and is a truly local, independent boutique fitness center. Located on the Plaza, off Broadway, the studio is tucked between Francesca’s and Tumi, and the entrance is up a flight of stairs on the interior of the building. Once inside, one of the most fun and sweaty 45 minutes of your life awaits. Owner Kerri Pomerenke and studio director Katie Phillipps came to Mojo from backgrounds in dance and group fitness and operate the business with a level of excellence that keeps both first timers and life timers coming back for more.

“THERE’S SOMETHING THAT BONDS PEOPLE TOGETHER WHEN THEY ARE DOING THE SAME MOVEMENT AT THE SAME TIME. I THINK THAT IS THE INFECTIOUS THING.”
WHAT MAKES MOJO SO UNIQUE AS A GYM?
Katie: We’ve always been very centered around community. Yes, it is an awesome, challenging workout. But beyond that, it really feels like a second home. We strive to create a space that feels safe and inviting and comfortable, a place that you want to stay longer than just a fitness class. It’s very experiential. Something happens in that room that is like magic and hard to explain unless you take a class. Kerri: You are working your tail off, but the time flies because your brain is so focused on accomplishing that next track, that song, that motion.
WHAT IS SO POWERFUL ABOUT WORKING OUT/ CYCLING TOGETHER?
Katie: There’s something that bonds people together when you are simply doing the same movement at the same time. I think that is the infectious thing. I feel like I know my neighbor, even though I just sat down on the bike and have never seen them in my life. The second that it clicks, and you hit the pedal stroke on the beat at the same time with the movement, it’s like, ‘Oh wow, I feel like I can do anything.’ We’re going to always stay true to having music and rhythm unite us. Kerri: You come for the workout, but you stay for the community. There’s power in feeding off of that collective energy and having fun because you’re sharing that experience with others around you, and not in your basement staring at a screen. You get all the endorphins. You get the workout done. All you need to do is put on whatever makes you feel great, show up, and get on a bike! CONTINUED >

MORE THAN CYC LI N G Mojo has expanded its class schedule with a second room dedicated to off-bike fitness. Complement a 45-minute cycle with:
MOJO MAT:
Mojo Mat is like the experience on the bike without the bike– a Pilates boot camp with moderate weightlifting.
MOJO STRENGTH:
Mojo Strength is full body strength building, a party with heavy weights..
MOJO FLOW:
Mojo Flow is lightweight and restorative with deep stretching and moments of complete relaxation.
Coming early 2026, Mojo is introducing the Pilates Hero Board. It emulates the Pilates Reformer, but much smaller. The class is an intimate size (12 slots) and takes place in a lightly heated studio.
26
G E T ACT IV E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT WHEN WALKING INTO MOJO FOR THE FIRST TIME?
Katie: You’re going to expect a really unique, all senses, all consuming experience. Our goal is to prepare people for something they’ve never done before, and to help them feel comfortable trying something that might be super uncomfortable. The cycling room is all black. You’re stepping into a cozy, intimate environment with three levels of bikes on risers, and the instructor is up front. We keep the lights low, and use lighting as part of the experience. It feels very safe because you’re not in bright light. I used to hide in the corner, and here I am now teaching! I had the confidence to fail in a safe space so I could actually get better. Kerri: Indoor cycling is a sport. Show up ready to learn. There are teachers and riders who are very practiced at it, and are also welcoming for the new person who needs to learn how to set up their bike, the positions, the instructor’s cues and the terminology. I think this is something Mojo does really well.
WHY IS CYCLING SUCH AN INCREDIBLE AND BENEFICIAL WAY TO WORK OUT?
Katie: I love running outside. I was an athlete, but I have a bad back. I was quickly drawn to cycling because it was something I could do that gave me that same feeling as running, while being safe and with low impact. We have riders in their 70s, and I truly think I’m going to be teaching when I’m 85 years old. It is also challenging mentally. You are getting choreography thrown at you and have a few seconds to register the move and implement it. When that connection starts to become faster, it really increases people’s confidence. I’ve seen it for myself. It’s been beautiful seeing people start in the back row slowly inch their way to the first row. Kerri: There’s the physical workout, the enjoyment, and the experience of knowing others and being known. It’s the trifecta. I love going to Mojo because the people are cool, and everyone’s there for something in common. It’s an experience that’s even more fulfilling and powerful when shared.
WHY IS CYCLING A GREAT WORKOUT CHOICE FOR EVERYBODY?
Katie: Cycling sometimes gets a wrap of being intimidating, but what’s beautiful about an indoor bike is that it allows for adaptability. If you are new, you do not need to turn it up 20 times for resistance. Your first level is simply catching the rhythm with your legs. When you’re sitting in the saddle and catching the rhythm the whole time, you’re going to get a phenomenal, challenging full body workout. Your next level is to maintain the rhythm and get out of the saddle. That third level is dancing on the bike. We do movement, but we try to do it in a way that is anatomically beneficial. It’s movement that is freaking fun, purposeful, and not just cute. Kerri: It’s a great physical workout, great for your brain, and a really fun experience. The people who are teaching the classes love what they do. You’re going to experience that, and you can’t help but have fun doing it. You’re also supporting a small, local business in Kansas City. It’s beneficial to you as the person participating, but it’s also beneficial to your community.

MODERN HEALTHCARE Peeling back the curtain on Ascentist healthcare and how its leadership embraces patient-centric care
Healthcare experiences can vary greatly, often shaping how patients feel about the system as a whole. These challenges were recognized by the leaders at Ascentist Healthcare, motivated by a commitment to improving access and creating a more patient-centered experience. Dr. Doug Cowan, President and CEO of Ascentist, established the private healthcare system in response to the access gaps he observed throughout his career. A Kansas City native and University of Kansas graduate, Dr. Cowan’s experience in both private practice and medical missions shaped a clear vision of what high-quality healthcare should look like – equitable and timely access for patients. “Our commitment is to deliver exceptional care,” he said. “From the moment patients walk through our doors, they experience something different - the efficiency and expertise that gets them to a much better place, faster. Our organization is designed to diagnose and resolve patient problems quickly and effectively,” Dr. Cowan said. “As you look at a lot of other systems or practices, there are really long waits. Our expectation is that if there is any urgency to the scenario, we find a way to get them in,” Dr. Spencer Eagan said. “I think being patient forward is what defines our organization. We try to do what is best for the patient.” CONTINUED >

Dr. Eagan is an executive partner and plastic surgeon at Ascentist Healthcare, bringing experience in building and leading healthcare programs. A Lawrence, Kansas native and fellow Jayhawk, he first crossed paths with Dr. Cowan on the soccer field. That early connection later evolved into a partnership defined by their shared vision for patient-centered care and a mutual drive to improve the healthcare experience. “The combination of our backgrounds makes us a lot stronger and more nimble,” Dr. Eagan said. “We try to create an environment that doesn’t feel medical, and I think a lot of it is the caring nature of our staff and providers. I think one of the big reasons why we’re here today is the culture Doug set from top to bottom.” “We always knew we’d work together because we share the same core values - a deep commitment to our patients, our staff, and doing what’s right. It was a natural partnership from the start,” Dr. Cowan said. Dr. Cowan and Dr. Eagan have seen Ascentist Healthcare grow into one of Kansas City’s most trusted and widely recognized healthcare organizations. With over 20 specialties and 18 locations throughout the metro area, it continues to expand at a rapid pace. While skill and talent are essential, the physicians emphasize that compassion and the collective strength of the team ultimately shape how they build their organization. “We recruit exceptionally talented physicians - not only for their clinical expertise, but for their character. We seek kind, compassionate people who genuinely care about their patients and colleagues. Our culture naturally attracts and nurtures the kind of outstanding professionals who want to be part of what we’re building,” Dr. Cowan said. “That is one of the big things that separates us, but that’s not just due to us. It’s due to everyone that’s a part of the organization,” Dr. Eagan said. “It’s the administrative leaders, the people that greet people when they come in, the nurses that follow up on tests and communicate the good news, and sometimes, the bad news.” The breadth of expertise at Ascentist enables providers to collaborate effectively across specialties. Anchored by trust and camaraderie, inside and outside the clinic, the organization’s culture strives to deliver the best possible care to patients. “We have physicians who’ve been practicing their specialties for 30 years, yet they’re completely reimagining how they approach certain problems,” Dr. Cowan said. “Take chronic cough, for example - we’re treating it in a truly unique way. We bring together lung specialists, GI specialists, and ENT specialists, all working in the same space. We’re identifying and resolving conditions that patients have endured for 20 years or more. The level of collaboration, communication, and trust among our providers has been extraordinary.” Their leadership ensures patients are empowered to express their needs openly, ask questions freely, and feel secure in their expectations. While reaching this level of care has taken significant effort and investment, Dr. Cowan and Dr. Eagan remain driven—not to chase greater success, but to better serve the people they are privileged to call their patients. “Today, I saw a patient who is two years out from breast cancer. I often tell my patients that reaching this milestone is when you truly feel like yourself again. Seeing her thriving made my day. This is why we do what we do—for happy patients and to solve the challenges they face.” Dr. Eagan said. “Our leaders and team members alike are driven by something bigger than individual recognition,” Dr. Cowan said. “It’s about treating people the way you want to be treated, constantly elevating our standards, and embracing change to create meaningful improvements. Ultimately, what makes Ascentist special is the genuine care and commitment we show to the people we lead and serve.”

Ask the Expert Biological dentistry is often described as a “new” approach, yet its foundation is remarkably timeless: honoring the human being behind the smile. At its core, biological dentistry recognizes that patients are not passive recipients of care but active participants in decisions that influence their long-term well-being. This perspective invites individuals to understand their oral health as an integral part of their overall health, empowering them to make choices aligned with their values, goals, and biology. This integrative lens allows us to support patients across the entire lifespan. In infancy,

oral function plays a critical role in developing patterns of feeding and breathing—two fundamentals that shape facial growth, sleep quality, and even cognitive development. By identifying and addressing concerns early, such as tonguetie restrictions or airway limitations, we help nurture foundations that will serve a child for decades. As children grow, the development of the jaws becomes a central determinant of future health. Underdeveloped jaws can contribute to crowding, compromised airways, and dysfunctional bite patterns. Biological dentistry emphasizes early, gentle guidance that encourages proper growth rather than waiting to correct problems later with more invasive measures. This proactive mindset supports not only oral structure but also breathing, posture, and sleep. In adulthood, many individuals seek answers to chronic concerns that traditional models may not fully address. Hidden infections, toxic loads from older dental materials, and long-standing structural imbalances can all influence systemic health. Biological dentistry does not dismiss what has come before; instead, it offers a broader lens—one that considers biocompatibility, airway, inflammation, and the interconnected nature of the body. Equally central to biological dentistry is the recognition that oral health does not exist in isolation. Nutrition, movement, sleep quality, and emotional well-being profoundly influence the mouth and the body. We encourage patients to view these elements not as obligations, but as opportunities—ways to cultivate resilience from the inside out. Ultimately, biological dentistry invites people to deepen their understanding of their own health. It encourages thoughtful decision-making rather than blind reliance on any single authority. By staying curious, asking questions, and choosing care aligned with whole-body wellness, patients step into a more informed and empowered partnership with their health. It’s fire cider season! If you’re not on the fire cider train, then you best get a ticket and come aboard. Does it work? Who really knows. Could it help? Well I think so! Look at everything in it. Nothing but aromatics, herbs, cinnamon, vinegar and honey. How could it not be doing something amazing? Also, I know this might sound cuckoo, but I love the flavor. It’s punchy, spicy, has a bite, with a hint of sweet. It’s so good! Do the kids like it? Um. Hmmmm. Never mind.
INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •
1 medium white onion, quartered 1 jalapeño, sliced in half 1 lemon, quartered 1 small orange, quartered 3-5 garlic cloves, out of their skins 2 cinnamon sticks, halved 1 sprig fresh rosemary A nob of Turmeric root (or 1/2 tsp ground) A nob of ginger root if you have it 1 cup apple cider vinegar 1/4-1/2 cup honey
INSTRUCTIONS
It’s very simple. You cut up an onion, a lemon, an orange, grab a few garlic cloves, some rosemary, cinnamon sticks, some turmeric and ginger root if you have it. Violently squeeze it all in a jar, add the apple cider vinegar and honey, and shake the crud out of it. That’s it. A tablespoon every morning is what this crew does (during the winter months) and I feel like it helps. It’s a good gut punch, if anything. Be sure and take it after you’ve had a little food, or else the apple cider vinegar will make your stomach feel weird for about a minute or so. It’s like, WHOA. But I love a good whoa. Acidic and vibrant. Lots of spice. Lots of sass. I dare you to make one and take a little bit everyday and just see how you feel. Lasts all winter in the fridge.

“WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
AND PROVIDED
Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, rootcause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
The New Frontier of Health
SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.
“WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
