Love Local! One thing I love about our community is the desire to make sure businesses and people are successful. I was talking to a local business owner the other day about how a national chain wiped out all the local competition in St. Louis, and they are trying to do the same here in Kansas City. He then responded to his statement with, “That won’t happen in Kansas City. Too many people love to support and buy from local businesses.” We are unique in Kansas City, especially in our corner of it, because we care about the people in our community. The Kansas City community showed their support alongside Gomer's Fine Wine and Spirits on 103rd Street to raise $14,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society during their annual bourbon raffle in December. The fundraiser was in response to a popular Kansas City DJ's battle with leukemia and resulted in one of Gomer's most successful raffles to date with an impressive list of bottles up for grabs.

What do flowers, chocolates and dogs have in common? Other than their sweetness, not much. However, a local animal rescue in Kansas City hopes to be synonymous with those Valentine’s Day bestsellers by providing love in its furriest form to homes across the metro area. Since its opening in October 2021, Valentine’s Second Chance Animal Rescue has given a new lease on life to over 300 dogs who were abandoned by their owners or at risk for euthanasia, but it all started with just one. Brieanna Willis rescued “Valentine” on February 14, 2021, and it did not take long for this passionate advocate to dream up a way to help other dogs like Valentine. “She was absolutely terrified, pregnant and only days away from being euthanized,” she said. “She was originally a foster, but quickly she knew that she had already found her forever home.” Through social media and other fundraising methods, Willis created this foster network solely with the help of her Kansas City community. They work to place dogs in loving homes to alleviate the crowding in local animal shelters, and ultimately, be adopted. Knowing how difficult it is for animal rescues across the nation to stay afloat, she values how much growth Valentine’s has seen in the past two years. “Our animal welfare industry is currently experiencing a nationwide crisis. Every day, thousands of dogs are losing their lives for no fault of their own,” she informed. “At Valentine’s Second Chance Animal Rescue, we see firsthand the amazing result of taking a dog from an overcrowded shelter and showing them the love they deserve.” Love in the form of flowers might smell nice. Love in the form of chocolate might taste great. But according to Willis, there is truly nothing better than feeling the love from a shelter pet. “Honestly, I do not think there is a better feeling in the world,” she said. “Pets can be your biggest supporter and most loving companion. We spend our days filled with the love of so many amazing pets, and we know you won’t regret opening your home and heart to a pet in need.” Especially during the winter months, community support is so important. Whether in the form of volunteers,

donations or fostering, Valentine’s is focused on creating more opportunities for the community to be involved. “There are so many ways you can help support local animal rescues and no act is too small,” she said. “Since we do not have a brick and mortar shelter, our community opening their homes to shelter is quite literally life-saving,” And of course, a Valentine’s Day does not go by without an added push for foster and adoption, in honor of the original Valentine. A yearly fundraiser event for Valentine’s Day featuring a puppy kissing booth and silent auction are in the works.

MEET THE MOBILE DENTISTS Kurlbaum Dentistr y loves on locals with at-home dental care

For many of us, passing a dentist’s office is an everyday occurrence. In fact, they can be such a common sight, you may not even realize their existence until your annual appointment rolls around. But for others, a trip to the dentist can be a life-altering experience, especially if your dentist comes to you. Sky and Nicole Kurlbaum opened their dental practices in the Kansas City metro hoping to make a difference in the lives of their patients. Meeting the needs of their patients is top priority, even if their patients live miles away. Their approach is different but simple.

“We try to reach the people who don’t have another option because if we don’t go help them, no one will,” Dr. Sky Kurlbaum said. This looks like packing up the car with their mobile dentistry kits, driving out into very rural areas and giving those patients the care they need. Many are elderly and cannot physically make it into the office, which as the Kurlbaums have discovered, makes those patients feel easily forgotten. “We find the missing people that are hidden in plain sight that aren’t getting taken care of,” Dr. Nicole Kurlbaum said. Recently, Dr. Sky Kurlbaum and a team member drove hundreds of miles to visit a lady who had suffered significant damage to the bridge of her mouth. As she reclined in her chair, Kurlbaum was able to reconstruct her top teeth just in time for her 99th birthday and Christmas. “When you can walk into someone’s kitchen, you can say, ‘Hey, we’re here. We’re gonna take an x-ray of that tooth that’s bothering you. We’re gonna get you out of pain. We’re gonna put you back together so that you have your teeth for maybe your last Christmas with your family’,” Dr. Sky said. As locals from the Kansas City area, the Kurlbaums have a heart for the community that raised them. Sky grew up in a family of dentists, and Nicole was always fascinated by teeth. Going to school to become dentists helped them realize how much they could give back in this realm. “We’ve also done a ton of community work in Kansas City – world cancer screenings, free dental screenings, free fluoride – which grew into providing just free dental work because you see folks who don’t have any money and their teeth are hurting them. They can’t get a job because they don’t have front teeth or because they’re in pain,” Dr. Nicole said. A healthy mouth has a dramatic effect on overall health. The Kurlbaums are passionate about restoring what they can so their patients can live a full life, no matter their age or mental capacity. Seeing a family recognize their loved ones again after a dental procedure is just one of the motivations behind why the Kurlbaums do what they do. “I want families to know that if they or their loved ones can’t leave their home that we can come to them and that we’ve seen everything so there’s no judgment. We are here to help people find a path back to health in a way that they maybe haven’t heard of before,” Dr. Nicole said.

Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!

Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. From-Scratch Pasta

Yield: 1 pound

what you need

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs

what you do 1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. To cut by hand, lightly fold sheets one at a time into thirds and cut to desired thickness. Recipe from MarthaStewart.com.

BECAUSE. CHOCOLATE. C h o c o late Fond ue • 2 cups heavy cream • 1 pound premium semisweet chocolate (recommended: Lindt or Callebaut) • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract • 1 tablespoon brandy • Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, brownies, waffles, marshmallows, Oreos, pound cake, pretzels or any other dipping item of your choice! Put approximately four inches of water in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Place a mixing bowl on top and pour in the heavy cream. Let heat. Or, use a double boiler. Meanwhile, break up or chop the chocolate into small pieces. When the cream feels hot to the touch, add chocolate and whisk until smooth. Whisk in vanilla and brandy (optional). Pour into the fondue pot and light the handy fuel underneath. Keep the flame low as not to burn the fondue. Arrange dippers on a platter and enjoy. 1/2 cup milk 1 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup whole coffee beans 2 ounces semisweet chocolate (61% Valrhona), chopped • 2 tablespoons Kahlua • 1 teaspoon confectioner's sugar • 1 tablespoon dark chocolatecovered coffee beans, chopped In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream, and whole coffee beans. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover, and steep beans for 1 hour. Strain liquid and return to saucepan; discard beans. Bring the milk-and-cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate, and whisk until incorporated. Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua. Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners' sugar until soft peaks form. Divide the hot chocolate between 2 cups and garnish each portion with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of chopped chocolate-covered coffee beans.

When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served "dinner" early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! Happy Valentine's Day!
