Illuminating Minds and Bodies through Pilates

Feel stronger, move better and make connections

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCY HAWTHORNE
Heidi Folkerds - Owner

When Heidi Folkerds first started attending Pilates classes, she didn’t feel like she fit in. “I’m a little eccentric and I didn't dress the part, I didn't look the part,” she says. “So, I thought I'd create a space that was a little different, a little unique.”

In November of 2018, she founded Lumos7 Pilates in Minneapolis, which emphasizes inclusivity, fun, and strength. “As someone who has a background in exercise science, I really wanted to create a fitness space that was both fun and functional, but I was also looking at what the local community could use and need.”

Heidi’s vision has been working out well, and it’s constantly evolving. “We've found more ways to be inclusive, whether it's how we cue things, how we talk to people, or how we bring them into the space and make it more fun.”

She and her team of certified instructors attend many continuing education courses. “I'm really picky about who I hire, and I look for people who got into the industry because they want to help people feel better, feel stronger, move better, and become more confident in their bodies.”

With their extensive experience and deep knowledge, they can literally work with anybody, from extremely athletic clients who want to be constantly challenged to those who have to take it slower due to age or medical conditions. Right now, Lumos7 has clients from ages 16 to 87, and is able to meet all of their needs and capabilities.

Heidi actually named her business after her goal of illuminating people’s minds and bodies with the seven Pilates principles that it teaches. These principles include Breath, Control, Centering, Alignment, Relaxation, Precision, and Flow.

“Our trainers come with different experiences and different backgrounds,” she says. “They are all really talented, and while they each have a slightly different approach, each one of their approaches can be tied into some or all of these principles in one way or another.”

Some clients may prefer trainers that focus on the breath, while others prefer those who focus on being precise and finding flow in movements. “Some of our clients come every day, and they're getting a high quality yet very different experience each time.”

Lumos7 Pilates offers multiple types of classes – all the way from beginner to athletic, but Heidi recommends that all new clients start out with private sessions in order to find out exactly what they need and can do.

“PEOPLE OFTEN REALIZE THEY’RE A LOT STRONGER THAN THEY THOUGHT, SO WE BUILD THAT CONFIDENCE AND TRY TO HELP THEM FEEL THINGS THEY’VE NEVER FELT BEFORE.”

“People often realize they're a lot stronger than they thought, so we build that confidence and try to help them feel things they've never felt before.” The ultimate goal is for clients to leave feeling refreshed and more focused.

Trainers also often incorporate specialized Pilates equipment, such as reformers, towers, and chairs. All utilize spring tension, which is quickly and easily customizable. Adjusting this tension is a simple way to either increase or decrease the challenge or intensity level of any workout.

The majority of her trainers, who have been with Heidi since the beginning, have developed strong relationships with clients, many of whom have also been there for years. “Everyone loves coming here. They feel comfortable. Clients  trust us, so they're willing to try new things or push their bodies a little bit more because they already feel safe.”

There’s also a strong sense of community. “We're living in a time where private equity is buying out a lot of boutique Pilates studios,” she says. “They have tried to purchase my studio

from me and I've turned them down. I was born and raised in Minneapolis. I live here now. I've put down roots. I plan to own this studio for the long term and keep it run by local trainers.”

Adds Heidi, “Minneapolis and St. Paul in the Twin Cities have had to endure many hardships over the past seven to eight years. Lumos7 Pilates provides a space where people are amongst likeminded individuals. Here, people feel cared for, they feel seen, they make friends. We all feel connected to each other.”

She’s looking forward to growing her clientele and expanding her offerings while maintaining a sense of stability. “My husband and I bought the building that our studio's located in, so we have a permanent home. People trust that we're going to be here next year and the year after. There's just so much good that’s happened and I'm just so grateful for the community and the amazing people that we've attracted.”

Find connection, support, and renewed hope at The Grief Club of Minnesota

A SPACE FOR HEALING

Loss touches more children than we often realize. And while grief is never easy, experiencing it at a young age can be especially overwhelming. When the loss of a loved one comes far too early, having the right support can make all the difference. And that's why The Grief Club of Minnesota, which provides a space for grieving children, teens, young adults, and their caregivers to share, connect, and heal, isn’t just meaningful but essential. It’s a reminder that no one has to navigate grief alone.

For co-founders Sarah Kroenke and Cara Mearns-Thompson, this work is deeply personal. As a teen, Sarah experienced the death of her mother, which changed the course of her life and influenced her professional career. Cara’s own experiences with the death of her sister and father by the age of 20 left an equally lasting mark on her journey and led her to this work with the same depth of commitment. Throughout their careers as licensed mental health counselors—nearly 55 years combined working in hospice care, schools, private practices, and crisis teams—they’ve witnessed the same heartbreaking reality: families navigating death were often left without consistent, specialized support.

By leading national speaking engagements and trainings on childhood bereavement, Sarah and Cara traveled across the country, giving them the opportunity to visit many grief centers along

the way. Through these experiences, they saw what was possible and knew Minnesota needed something similar. From this vision, The Grief Club of Minnesota was born, grounded in a mission to create a space where grief isn’t carried alone, but navigated with support, compassion, and community.

In its first year—just five years ago—The Grief Club provided 397 visits through a whole-family approach to care. By 2025, that number had grown to 4,000 visits in a single year—reflecting both the increasing need and the deep trust families place in this space for healing.

The organization supports children, teens, and young adults up to age 25 following the death of a parent or sibling. It also serves adults who are grieving the death of a child, or a spouse or partner, while raising children within that same age range. The Grief Club offers a full continuum of grief support, including individual and family counseling, peer groups, family grief series, therapeutic camps, special events, crisis and trauma support, and community education.

Sarah goes on to explain that every service is delivered by licensed mental health practitioners with specialized expertise in grief and trauma. What truly sets them apart, however, is their commitment to making care accessible. All services are provided at no cost to families, and insurance is not billed—ensuring that support is available without financial burden.

Co-founder Cara Mearns-Thompson
Co-founder Sarah Kroenke

“Grief has a way of making people feel deeply alone,” but not at The Grief Club. Here, there’s calm, compassion, and hope for families who have experienced an out-of-order death. Stories are shared, lives are honored, and individuals feel seen and understood. Those who have experienced the death of a loved one can process their feelings with a licensed counselor, through different modalities, alongside others who understand. Here, families can work through their grief, develop coping skills, and find a path forward. When grief is carried without support, it can take a lasting toll—both immediately and over time—on emotional well-being. Having a place to turn to, like The Grief Club, can make all the difference.

Building this healing space has become one of the most meaningful chapters in Cara and Sarah’s lives. They share a deep commitment to supporting families after the death of a loved one, bringing together complementary strengths, decades of experience, and a unified vision for the work. What began as an idea has grown into a trusted resource serving countless families across Minnesota.

“Witnessing the impact of this work on families across the state is both a gift and a profound privilege—grounded in the trust families place in us during their most tender moments.”

"Starting a nonprofit is a journey of deep commitment, reflected in the remarkable growth The Grief Club has experienced. Witnessing the impact of this work on families across the state is both a gift and a profound privilege—grounded in the trust families place in us during their most tender moments." As The Grief Club continues to expand its reach, it remains guided by a simple belief: every child and family in Minnesota navigating grief deserves a place to turn—where they are met with compassion, understanding, and ultimately, feel less alone.

DESIGNING outdoor SPACES WITH PURPOSE

As homeowners increasingly look to extend their living spaces beyond four walls, the demand for thoughtful, elevated landscape design continues to grow. At NRD Landscape + Design Build, that demand is met with a refined, client-centered approach that blends functionality, beauty, and long-term value. Led by owner Eric Robertson, the company has built a reputation for creating outdoor environments that feel both timeless and deeply personal.

“What we are seeing in today’s designs are features that are timeless, clean and not too busy,” Robertson explains. Rather than chasing fleeting trends, NRD focuses on materials and layouts that endure. “Patio surfaces such as natural stone in simple patterns can provide a sophisticated, durable and timeless look,” he says. “Another great thing about stone is that it can look even better as it ages.”

This emphasis on longevity is paired with intentional design. Today’s outdoor spaces are no longer afterthoughts—they are extensions of the home, often serving multiple purposes. “Also popular in design are outdoor rooms or spaces that are multi-purpose and designed with purpose and clear intent,” Robertson notes. Whether it’s a place for entertaining, relaxing, or gathering with family, each space is crafted with the homeowner’s lifestyle in mind.

What truly sets NRD apart, however, is its commitment to individuality. “I feel one of the strong suits at NRD Landscape Design Build is how our designers approach each project as an opportunity to express the individual personality of the client, rather than a similar, repetitive look from project to project,” Robertson says. By carefully considering site conditions and the architectural style of the home, the team ensures every

“WHAT WE ARE SEEING IN TODAY’S designs ARE FEATURES THAT ARE timeless, CLEAN AND NOT TOO BUSY.”

design feels cohesive and unique. “Taking the site conditions and architectural style of the home into consideration when developing a plan and making it unique to the client’s needs” is central to their philosophy.

Even smaller spaces are treated with the same level of care and creativity. According to Robertson, scale and perspective are key. “There are many great choices of smaller ornamental trees that grow in a narrow upright form providing a strong vertical interest without a large footprint,” he explains. Compact plant varieties also help maintain balance without overwhelming the space. Thoughtful accents can elevate even the most modest footprint. “A unique boulder or stone that is drilled and made into a simple water feature over an in-grade basin can be a beautiful way to bring sound, movement and calm into a small intimate space as well.”

Creating a sense of privacy—especially in urban or suburban settings—is another common priority for homeowners. Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all solution, NRD approaches each project with a tailored strategy. “If you envision a backyard sanctuary, strong garden design comes into play with intentional layering and mixed use of foliage shapes, color and evergreen elements,” Robertson says. The goal is to strike a balance: “Designing so that it reads intentional and calm, rather than clutter and chaos.”

Privacy itself can take many forms, depending on the property and the homeowner’s needs. “One thing to consider when looking for privacy, does your space need privacy year-round or just during a portion of the season?” Robertson advises. Evaluating sight lines, viewing angles, and overall space allows the team to create solutions that feel natural and effective.

Beyond aesthetics, landscape design must also navigate practical considerations—particularly local regulations. “There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer here because it can vary from city to city,” Robertson explains. Many municipalities limit the amount of impervious surface allowed on a property, which includes features like patios, driveways, and the home itself. “Impervious areas, simply put, are those that rainwater cannot naturally pass through and re-enter the ground,” he says.

“WE FEEL THE MOST important PART OF THIS PROCESS IS LISTENING TO THE client— WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING TO achieve, WHAT VISION THEY MAY HAVE, AND WHAT EXISTING PROBLEMS WE CAN HELP SOLVE.”

To ensure compliance, NRD takes a proactive approach. “After consulting with clients about their project goals, we start by contacting the municipality in question and learn what requirements are for that specific site.” Solutions like permeable paving can help mitigate restrictions, though even those vary in acceptance depending on the city. From the first conversation to the final installation, NRD’s process is designed to be clear, collaborative, and client-focused. “When a client reaches out, we have a conversation about what it is they are looking for to ensure we’re the right fit,” Robertson explains. This is followed by an in-person consultation, where a designer evaluates the property and discusses goals in detail. The team then develops a comprehensive plan, complete with design concepts and budgeting guidance.

At the heart of it all is a simple but powerful principle: listening. “We feel the most important part of this process is listening to the client—what they are looking to achieve, what vision they may have, and what existing problems we can help solve,” Robertson says.

As the landscaping season approaches, NRD Landscape + Design Build stands ready to help homeowners reimagine their outdoor spaces—not just as yards, but as meaningful, lasting extensions of home.

Ask Susan

Susan:

It’s not always overspending—it’s stepping out of the conversation altogether. This can include not having the discipline to consistently save and invest for the future. I often see women avoid working with a financial advisor because they’re worried about losing control, or they avoid investment risk simply because they don’t fully understand what risk actually is. In reality, the right advisor helps you gain more control—and avoiding that support can be short-sighted over time.

BECKY HILLYARD

From Side Hustle to Style Empire

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”

She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s, she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?

A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Becky in Splendid x @CellaJaneBlog Spring 2026 Collection

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?

A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.

Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?

A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.

Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?

A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.

This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle Podcast.
