Roots

April 2023 PUBLISHER

Alexandra Patty | alexandra.patty@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Sarah Knieff | sarah.knieff@citylifestyle.com

Spring got me thinking about some things – roots in particular. Winter can be long and hard, gray and cold. But underneath all that ice and snow lies strong roots. Roots that we cannot see right away, but we know are there. Roots that are growing and will soon start blooming, eventually bringing beauty to everything we see. Roots are strength. Minneapolis Lakes magazine is about roots in our community, and roots that connect us to neighbors, family and friends. Lots of care goes into planning the “roots” or content we bring to you each month, which lead to stories that will bloom for readership and small business. This month is our explore issue and that includes checking out some community roots. Or, perhaps for some, that means uprooting a bit, and planting new seeds in order to explore outside a comfort zone and try something new. We dug into the upcoming MSP Home Tour to learn more about the remodeled homes you’ll be able to see this year. Put on by NARI, it is absolutely free to the public with no tickets needed. If you want to explore these neighborhoods and homes for new ideas, this is the tour for you. The team also visited Planty Queens, the beloved store of Lillie Rosen and Maya Harris. Here, customers can shop for their favorite greenery, get help at the potting station and take steps to growing more green. And, if you want to explore more outside the Twin Cities, Lutsen Resort is always a great spot. With loads of activities all year round and beautiful views of Lake Superior, it’s a hop, skip and a jump away to a convenient vacation. Last, but not least, we’ve included a wonderful dessert recipe by Genna Marks. So, if exploring in your own kitchen is on the list - this decadence will help to put a smile on your face. If you’ve still got some lingering winter blues, just remember the roots are growing and summer is just around the corner!

“This is Minnesota’s oldest resort,” manager Edward Vanegas says. “We were originally established in 1885 by Charles Axel Nelson who was a young Swedish immigrant. He was inspired by Lake Superior’s natural beauty and created his homestead near the water. The resort we know now started from more simple means – right out of a cabin.” Charles and his family support themselves through trapping, fishing and the more lucrative option, lodging. The first guests stayed at the Nelson home in 1886. In the early years, travelers found the resort a stop of convenience as they made their way up the lake. “There wasn’t even a road built during this time,” Edward says. “The Nelson children would give up their beds for the guests.” As the resort’s reputation grew, people began to visit just to vacation, fish and hunt. Eventually, a larger house/lodge and school was built on the property, allowing for more visitors and much to the children’s excitement, more beds. “In 1918, a road was opened to Duluth and electricity was introduced to the resort,” Edward explains. “It’s so cool, because the resort has gone through a ton of renovations and changes since this time. It’s amazing to know of its humble beginnings.” Throughout the years, by sheer determination, the property has been expanded upon to encompass all that it is today. It currently offers a lakeside historic lodge, Cliff House Townhomes and Log Cabins. “The Nelsons had to rebuild twice due to fires, but they did it,” Edward says. “This was their home and income. It was important to them to have a lasting legacy.” In 1988, the resort was sold to Scott Harrison and Nancy Burns, who would go on to build the cabins and townhomes on site. The duo wanted to honor the Nelsons and stayed with Swedish architecture. “Our two-bedroom cabins with wood fireplaces provide a true Northwoods experience with wonderful views of Lake Superior,” Edward says. “They have a full kitchen, dining area, living room, king guestroom and double guestroom with two full beds. They sleep two to six people.” He continues, “The two-story, three bedroom, three bath townhomes are our most spacious accommodations. Perched on a cliff above the lake, each unit sleeps up to nine people and includes a dining room, kitchen, living room, private whirlpool, patio, gas fireplace, TV and free wireless internet.” The resort and all of its properties are open year-round. In recent years, the historic lodge rooms have been updated with modern amenities, decor and furnishings. “Our Historic Lodge is a North Shore icon with classic Scandinavian ambiance and style with hand-hewn beams and stone fireplaces in the lobby and dining room,”

22

R OA D T R IP | TR AVEL

“We really have created a destination within a destination at the Lutsen Resort.” Edward explains. “Guests staying in the lodge are conveniently located close to all of the resort’s activities.” In 2018, the resort was sold once more to mother and son duo, Bryce and Sheila Campbell. Sheila has since passed, and Bryce is the current sole owner. “I started in 2019 and it has been wonderful working with the Campbells,” Edward says. “I run all the day-to-day operations of the resort, such as making sure the on-site Strand Waterfront Dining & Wine Bar is stocked, overseeing activities and maintaining high levels of guest service. The wine bar’s menu consists of contemporary and traditional North Shore cuisine items. The temperature-controlled wine cellar holds 1200 bottles of international and local fine wines. “We carry many wines from the Wine Spectator Top 100 list,” Edward explains. “As for resort activities, we offer a wide selection of exciting things to do in all months of the year.”

Activities include: ice skating, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, a complimentary shuttle, live music, beach bonfires, guided hikes, guided waterfall tours, Red Jammer Fall Color Tours, a swimming pool, bike rentals, tandem sea kayaking, casting lessons, fly fishing, naturalist programs, putt golf and a sauna. “We really have created a destination within a destination at the Lutsen Resort,” Edward says. “The North Shore has always been a destination and we are too. Even our shuttle bus is something neat because it’s a restored National Park bus. People love riding in it.” Over the next 24 months, Bryce plans to add a chalet building with rooms similar to the lodge. “We are always expanding and thinking of ways to improve our guest’s experiences,” Edward says. “It’s all about making our guests feel welcomed and happy.” To plan a Lutsen Resort trip, visit lutsenresort.com or call (800) 218-8589. It is located at 5700 W. Highway 61.

A Dessert to Impress ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY GENNA MARKS

Coffee Panna Cotta with Salted Caramel, Whipped Cream and Hazelnuts ingredients • • • • • • • • • •

1¼ C coffee 1 Tbsp gelatin ¾ C brown sugar 4 C heavy cream (you’ll have a little extra) 2½ Tsp vanilla 1 C sugar 5 Tbsp butter, unsalted, cubed ¼ C powdered sugar ¼ C hazelnuts, toasted and chopped Salt

directions To prepare the coffee panna cotta base: 1. In a saucepan over medium high heat, combine 1C coffee and gelatin, whisking continuously for a couple of minutes. Once the gelatin appears to be dissolved, add in brown sugar, 2 ½ C heavy cream, 1Tsp vanilla and a pinch of salt, and cook for another 5-7 minutes over medium heat, whisking regularly. The mixture will come to a boil, whisking ensures no burning on the bottom. Panna cotta is a classic Italian dessert from the northern region of Piedmont. It varies in flavor but the joy it brings does not. It is a dish that has a built-in elegance that deceivingly looks difficult in preparation; however, like many Italian delicacies, it shines in its simplicity and is incredibly easy to make. The luscious, silky texture of a panna cotta is sure to impress any dinner guest.

2. Transfer panna cotta base to ramekins and chill for a minimum of 4 hours. I like to do mine overnight. Once cooled, enjoy by itself or with additional toppings.

To prepare the salted coffee caramel: In a tall saucepan combine sugar with 2Tbsp of water, mix so the sugar is coated. Turn the heat onto medium high and do not whisk. Let the sugar cook until a caramel color starts to form around the edges, then gently swirl the pan until the entire mixture is a caramel color. Whisk in butter a cube at a time, then 1/3C heavy cream and whisk, then ½Tsp vanilla, ¼ C coffee, and a pinch of salt, continuously whisking. It is normal for the heavy cream to make the mixture bubble up; this is why you use a tall saucepan. Whisk and cook for another minute. Let cool, ready to use once room temperature. It will melt the cold panna cotta if served when it’s too warm. To prepare the whipped cream: In a stand mixer, combine 1C cream, ¼ C powdered sugar and 1Tsp vanilla. Whisk until fluffy with stiff peaks. To assemble your panna cotta: You can serve directly in the ramekin you baked the panna cotta in, simply by topping it with the caramel sauce, whipped cream and chopped hazelnuts. You can also plate them by running a warm butter knife around the edge of the ramekin. Gently tap and shake it out onto a plate, top with caramel, whipped cream, and hazelnuts. Enjoy!

WHO SAID PLANTS AREN’T ROYALTY? Bestfriends Open PlantyQueens to Share Their Passion for all Things Leafy

Best friends Lillie Rosen and Maya Harris opened PlantyQueens in April of 2022 to share their passion with the Minneapolis community. PlantyQueens offers plant rentals, wholesale, consultations and in-store shopping. “We have been best friends for over 10 years,” Lillie said. “Maya grew up with houseplants and has always been into horticulture.” Maya adds, “Before the store was an idea, I did a lot of planting and gardening in my free time. I tried to get Lillie into it and eventually in 2018, she did.” Lillie caught the “plant bug” as the duo say, and the pair were excited to bond over it. During the pandemic, Lillie became even more obsessed with all things plants when she was furloughed. “Everyone was inside, and it was cool to explore new plants,” Lillie says. “Collecting plants became a huge activity for a ton of people during this time, and Maya and I started to think about how we could turn our passion into a business.” The local need and interest were there, so the pair discussed their options. About a year

later in 2020, they opened PlantyQueens originally as an ecommerce shop only. “We purely did ecommerce for a while and never really thought about opening a physical store,” Lillie says. “As time went on and we did events, we noticed people really wanted a place to go and buy plants at any time - not just via the internet.” PlantyQueens, the store, opened in 2022, offering in-house shopping and other leafy related services. “At our place, you can find a wide variety of merch, crystals, products to help with growth and pests, and of course, plants,” Maya says. Some of those plants include Amydrium, Aglaonema, Begonias, Philodendron, Hoyas and Monsteras. “We have a ton of houseplants - from foundational to rare,” Maya says. Lillie adds, “We have a repotting station that we use in the shop for purchases of a plant and a pot. If you bring in your own plant, we can repot it for you for a small fee as well.” Now for those who aren’t familiar with all the different types of houseplants – including the

above – Maya and Lillie love answering any questions customers have when they are in the store. “We explain how to take care of it and all that general information,” Lillie says. For a more in-depth question session, the queens offer a 30-minute Zoom consultation. “If a person needs plant identification, wants to add more plants to their home but not sure which are best, or could use some help figuring out how to take care of their existing plants, this service is for them,” Maya says. “We are here to coach them through their planty obsession and make sure that they have someone to be their guide.” The consultation includes space assessment, coaching and/or specific houseplant Q&A, and a follow up email with recommendations. The fee is $40. “This is such a great service for those new or old to the world of plants,” Lillie says. “Sometimes people and plants just need a little help.” The queens also offer a wholesale interior design service for companies. “A lot of companies around the Twin Cities want to spruce up their office space and using plants is the perfect way to do that,” Lillie says. Maya adds, “Plants really freshen up any space that is lacking decor and if companies don’t need the plants for long term, they can rent from us too.” PlantyQueens’ rental service is not only for companies but for all types of events and customers. “We have been doing a ton of weddings lately and photo shoots,” Lillie says. “Our rental service is easy, and we come fully prepared to place the plants where our customer wants them. I have found this such a fun thing to do.” As PlantyQueens celebrates its one-year anniversary this month, Maya and Lillie are grateful for the strong planty family they have built. “We just love helping people find the perfect plant for them or someone they love,” Maya says. “It’s such a fun career and we are continuing to learn more about plants every day.” 2807 Johnson Street NE plantyqueens.com hello@plantyqueens.com

Tour Amazing Remodels LEARN ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES YOUR HOME MAY OFFER

The MSP Home Tour is now in its 34th year and is one of the most anticipated events in the area. On April 29 and 30, between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., participants will be able to tour local homes, and see some of the wonderful revisions homeowners and/or contractors have made to create beautiful spaces. It’s a great way to get ideas for remodeling one’s own home. “Last year, we had a total attendance of almost 1800 people, and that was right after the Omicron variant hit,” says Beatrice Owen, executive director of Minnesota’s National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). “The total number of visits to homes was 9,400. Participants typically visit just over six homes.” NARI is the only association in Minnesota dedicated solely to remodeling. “We were excited to be given the opportunity to purchase the tour a couple years ago and to continue its long tradition,” she says. “Since it’s also celebrating what we can do in our homes, it was a nice fit for our association.”

Some of the homes may reflect a luxury renovation done by a high-end contractor, while others can be a more classic but lovely remodel completed by a talented homeowner. “Our home is our castle, it’s a reflection of us, and it’s typically our largest investment. If COVID taught us anything, it was to set up our homes so that they work for us and meet our needs.” Visitors will be able to view houses that are using the latest SMART home technologies and/or are extremely energy efficient. “For our homeowners, it’s a source of pride to show people their homes and let them get ideas about what they can do,” says Beatrice. For example, many people stick with neutral colors for their walls, but what if they can see how they would look in a bolder color? It may give them the confidence to try something different. “Let’s say you have one of these classic bungalows in Minneapolis,” she says. “Typically, the kitchens are smaller, so what does a remodel on a kitchen look like? People can learn how the space may be enlarged or made more user-friendly.” They can also obtain recommendations for contractors. “This year, one of the homes is a duplex in the new Linden Green community, and it’s pretty funky in a fun way.” The home boasts a rooftop deck, a floating staircase and many other unique amenities. Another home near Minnehaha Falls combines modern features and open spaces that flow seamlessly into existing living areas, and also demonstrates how to increase function and storage in a small space. Tours are free; no tickets are needed. To see available homes, go to the MSP Home Tour website, which is all new this year. Feel free to choose which homes to see beforehand and receive a personalized map to visit them. There will also be printed guides available in all of the libraries in Hennepin County. msphometour.com
