Closing out Summer

Why did summer seem to last so long when we were kids? Nowadays, it seems to be over in the blink of an eye. Maybe it’s because every moment seems so much more precious after the past two years. In these current times, it’s all about making the most of time with family and friends. Hopefully, you have been able to make time for self-care, connections, and doing what you deem most valuable this summer. August is our annual Kids & Pets issue, and this year it leans more towards the kids. The Minneapolis Lakes team connected with one of our favorite Timberwolves players, Tauren Prince, to learn more about how he gives back to the Twin Cities community and beyond. We also spoke with Paul Babcock, President/COO, and teacher at MacPhail Center for Music to understand their mission to bring musical education to people of all backgrounds and economic levels In addition to great hair and beauty services in a comfortable and inclusive space, we found that Melissa Taylor, owner of Beauty Lounge Minneapolis, has gone the distance to educate. Melissa has been teaching Kids’ Hair Fundamentals since 2016. This class helps foster parents, parents of transracial adoptees and, multiracial families learn different hair types and how to style them successfully. And we cannot forget about Joy Collaborative, the non-profit founded in 2019 by Mark Ostrom. Mark’s team creates “Joy Rooms” or uniquely designed spaces that support youth with limiting diagnoses which grant them more autonomy while allowing families to have greater control of daily living. Last, but never least, our pets can bring such joy into our lives. Oftentimes, they become one of the most important family members. We have included some pet friendly recipes to make at home in order to treat your furry friends! With the closing out of summer, we wish you fabulous weather, lots of laughs, long days, and a slower pace.

MUSIC IS

CULTIVATING TALENT IN PEOPLE FROM EVERY BACKGROUND, AGE AND ABILITY

As the largest community school in the nation with over 15,000 students, MacPhail Center for Music is constantly striving to expand and engage its students and the communities it serves. Throughout its 115-year existence, one of the keys to its success has been evolving with the times. Diversity and inclusivity are critical to its mission. “Every culture has music and MacPhail will continue to aspire to be welcoming and inclusive to students and musical cultures from around the world,” says its president/coo and long-time music teacher, Paul Babcock. “Barriers to learning music can be geographic, they can be financial, and they can also be the type of music being taught. We want to break down those barriers so that everyone feels welcome and able to participate at MacPhail.” Music, he says, is really powerful. “I think a lot of people have the impression that MacPhail is a place of giving lessons, but what we do is so much more than that. It impacts us as individuals as we listen to, perform and learn music, and it helps us to find ways to express ourselves. It becomes a way to know ourselves better as well as the world around us. When we are playing music with others, we connect and build communities.” Approximately half of its students attend classes at one of its five sites in and around Minneapolis, while the other half does so through MacPhail’s Community Partnership programs. “Our teachers work with our partnering organizations in order to provide regular instruction at their locations, so we now have well over a hundred different locations where students are engaging with MacPhail,” says Paul. Students range in age from infants to over 100 years old. “As young children start to experience music, it shapes neurons in the brain to develop and be receptive to musical items, but it also transfers into the ability to be able to read and speak,” he says.” For older people, it keeps their brains active and engaged. Paul explains, “When you’re performing music, when you’re learning and playing music, it requires more activity in your brain level than any other documented activity. It uses both sides of our brains, including the logical as well as emotional side. “We enjoy listening to music, because of all those underlying pieces. It makes us feel good, it helps us when we’re sad, it helps us when we’re happy, and then underneath that, it’s actually really helping us to learn and to develop.” The potential for musical talent, he says, is in everybody. “With an organization such as MacPhail, we have the opportunity and responsibility to help everyone - no matter their background, no matter their age or

their abilities - to be able to uncover that innate musical ability that we’re all born with.” He adds, “When we have a teacher working with a student and they’re connecting, there’s a dynamism between the two of them. We’re always looking for teachers who are enthusiastic and excellent as performers and musicians, but most importantly, who can really connect and motivate students. When you combine that desire to play and enjoy music as a teacher with the desire to play and learn music with the student, you’ve got some real magic happening.” Since MacPhail Center for Music is a nonprofit, funding is critical for it to continue its mission. “To be able to provide the accessibility and the breadth and quality of programming,

it requires a partnership with our community in terms of donations,” says Paul. During his 35 years of teaching percussion, Paul has instilled the love of music in a wealth of students. About 26 years ago, he developed a percussion ensemble called Rimshots! - a group of highly motivated high-school aged percussionists who perform all over the United States and who have even traveled to France together to give concerts. “We have a great deal of fun putting together enjoyable music and performing it,” he says. The school puts on many other wonderful shows during the year. A list of them can be found on its website. K I D’S COR N E R | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

Executive Director and Founder of Joy Collaborative, Mark Ostrom, has a long history of working with those affected by life-limiting conditions. While in college studying design, Mark began working with an organization that helped kids with clef palates. It was during that time that he connected with the families and individuals affected by this condition and learned where they needed the most support. It wasn’t until years later, on Mark’s first major design project, the Rainforest Café at the Mall of America, that he realized his idea of starting a non-profit. The restaurant was designed in sound and feel, like a genuine rainforest with animatronic animals, fake plants, and even weather affects. According to Mark, “At some point, I thought, “They’re serving food here, but this is a unique experience. How can I bring that great design experience to families I knew?” Seeing how the Rainforest Cafe become a destination for happiness, and then watching families enjoy their time in that space inspired Mark to bring that same experience to the youth he had worked with back in college. Mark’s combined experiences finally led him to start the Minneapolis non-profit, Joy Collaborative in 2019, which was created to bring a better quality of life to youth affected with life-limiting conditions. The Joy Collaborative does this through “Joy rooms.” Joy Rooms are uniquely designed spaces that allow families to have greater control of daily living, as well as granting more autonomy to the youth themselves. Referrals for Joy Rooms come from parents, medical practitioners, health care workers and close friends to recipients. And once selected, these spaces are funded through generous donors, trade partners and sponsors, never at any cost to the family. The non-profit now has a board of directors and over 100 volunteer staff. It has completed 4 “Joy Rooms” for youth with wide-ranging concepts from a physical therapy jungle gym basement to an ADHD-complementary treehouse bedroom to a soccer stadium playroom. Its designers are set to complete five more projects in 2022 and have already begun booking for next year. Joy Collaborative has a goal of 6 to 8 builds a year at its current staff and volunteer numbers. The non-profit recently completed a Joy Room called “The Bennett Project.” The non-profit’s youth client, Bennett, is diagnosed with spina CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . bifida, and his doctor required that he prioritize physical therapy to stay healthy. Bennett’s family was having difficulty providing their son with the space needed to support his physical needs. “The Bennet Project” started as a family basement that was used as half storage, half hangout room—but could not suit Bennett’s physical needs. In renovating the space, Joy Collaborative goal became: “How many opportunities can we create for him to get physical in this space?” Says Mark. Joy Collaborative stepped in and renovated the family basement into a Minnesota Twins baseball-theme physical therapy jungle gym. Now, the room better complies with Bennett’s spina bifida and allows him to be an active kid. “His personality and his character really come through in the room design. It’s very purposeful and very spirited. It supports his need for physical therapy in many covert and nuanced ways,” Said Mark. Beyond building Joy Rooms, Joy Collaborative creates spaces for organizations that help youth. This year the nonprofit completed a “Serenity Space” inside a Minnesota Ronald McDonald House and is currently working to build a room for an adult living shelter in Uptown, Minneapolis. In the next few years, Mark plans to create more accessible mental and physical health products for youth in need. “If someone wants to create a spectacular Joy Room in their house and isn’t in our financial parameters—talk to us and let’s create something fantastic for your kid,” Said Mark.

The work of Joy Collaborative has been so successful, people have reached out to Mark from other states to ask if the non-profit could take its work nationally. “It would be really easy for me to say that I would love us to be a national relief organization, but the need is so great right here,” says Mark: “The facet will never turn off.” So until then, Joy Collaborative will be continuing the work Mark started back in college helping those in need, right here in Minnesota. MAKING A MARK IN MINNESOTA HOW TIMBERWOLVES PLAYER TAUREAN PRINCE IS SHARING MORE THAN JUST BASKETBALL

36

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

Taurean Prince fell in love with basketball at a very young age. “I love the art of it…being able to compete and let loose a little bit, and really just play ball. It was one thing that allowed me to escape when I was younger from life situations…you have your hobbies and your getaways, and that was mine.” Taking life day by day since he was young, he continually focused on family, being a brother, and playing basketball. He began playing competitively at age 8, and never looked back. Today, a lot has remained the same, and his family, his children, and playing basketball still continue to ground and motivate him.

TAURE AN PRINCE

Basketball has truly shaped his life, teaching him to be nimble and strong, both mentally and physically. He feels blessed to be able to play in the NBA and comments that, “Playing competitively is like you’re running a race. You never know when it’s going to end, or when it will end, or if it will even start for you. It’s a constant grind. You have to stay in your own mind and be conscious of the work you consistently have to put in to get to this level, and stay at this level.” Tuarean wants to pass his life lessons along, and believes sports is an outlet that teaches young people leadership, socialization, and how to connect with different people from different cities, different countries, and different worlds. He says that, “Not everyone fights the same battles, so to be able to get that experience and be able to reveal the respect you should have for everyone” is truly important. “You never know who your teammate will be. It forces you to get outside of the box. Life is a competition in itself…I think that’s the beauty of the work ethic behind it, and the results you can get if you put in the work.” Taurean pays what he has learned forward through multiple organizations. He recently partnered with Mayor Jacob Frey and the Boys & Girls Club for a Read Across America book drive in order to get kids their much-needed books for school. He also has his own non-profit and nationwide organization, Kids Hoops, which was founded in 2016. He runs this organization with his father and says, “We not only tutor kids outside of school, but we give them outlets to be able to play on local basketball teams. Whatever team they choose, we fund it. We also connect with the parents to ensure they have the same type of environment at home. A lot of kids are missing that. They go to school and get what they need, but when they come home it fades.” The program’s focus is to get the parents on track and in tune with what is going on. Taurean comments, “This approach will change the perspective of parenting and the kids seeing how involved their parent is.”

TAURE AN PRINCE

In the future, Taurean sees himself getting involved in many different nonprofit channels, one for example, being breast cancer awareness. He consistently donates to the Salvation Army as well as gives through what he refers to as random acts of kindness, which are completely unpredictable surprises for those not expecting anything. When Taurean talks about life in Minnesota, he softens, “I like how quiet it is and how nice people are. Minneapolis as a city has been through a lot in the past few years and it’s a strong city, very vibrant, and people definitely come out for their sports teams. It’s good to support and be a part of a city that loves to do that.” This

year he enjoyed making the playoffs, and the amazing crowds throughout the season, and he looks forward to more with the Timberwolves. When asked if he could go back in time and tell his younger self something he says, “To be patient.” To the younger generations, he would like to pass along that “you should always stay focused. Never let negative situations turn you to make negative decisions. Always turn a negative into a positive, stay true to yourself, and always be good to the people who love you.” But in reality, that is just good advice for everyone. Beauty for All A WELCOMING PLACE FOR EVERY HAIR TYPE AND STYLE PREFERENCE ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCY HAWTHORNE

When you walk into The Beauty Lounge in Minneapolis, the first thing you’ll notice is its high energy atmosphere. The second thing that will really stand out is the diversity of the clientele. People with textured, curly hair will be having their hair cut and styled next to someone with very fine, straight hair. “While being in the space next to somebody who’s from a different background, you’re overhearing conversations and can gain a different level of understanding of who that person is; it’s not just about the hair,” says owner, Melissa Taylor, who opened The Beauty Lounge in 2011. Her salon is all about diversity and ensuring that every client feels welcome. “We’re not pretentious,” she says. “There are some salons where people feel they have to be dressed up, but we want people to feel comfortable coming in as they are. Regardless of their ethnic background, their gender, or anything else, this is a space that feels affirming and inclusive and where people are not being judged for who they are.” There are nine stylists and two nail technicians, and everyone is vetted by Melissa herself. “Our stylists and technicians also have diverse backgrounds, and they just love what they do,” she says. “People have really sought out working at the salon because they align with our mission and are seeking a space that is inclusive

and where they feel that they can grow a diverse clientele.” She also loves welcoming entire families into her salon. “Over the years, I’ve noticed, especially with multicultural families, their kids were going to one place to get their hair done, the mom was going somewhere else, and the dad was going somewhere completely different. Families should be able to go to the same place to get their hair done regardless of their hair texture.” For Melissa, providing education for these families is also important. “I’ve been teaching a class called Kids’ Hair Fundamentals since 2016,” she says. “Parents can come into the salon with their kids and they can really learn how to style their children’s hair. It’s specifically targeted towards foster parents, parents of transracial adoptees and, of course, multiracial families.” In order to be able to help parents who are from out of the area, she recently recorded an online course. “I know it’s just not a Minnesota problem or a United States problem,” says Melissa. “It’s definitely a global problem.” She has recently been contacted by a parent in Canada seeking her help. Weddings have also been a part of her business model since the beginning due to her background and expertise in bridal hair and makeup. In addition to offering CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/MI N N E A P O L I S L A KE S

these services in the salon itself, she has freelance hair and makeup artists that go on location. “We have nail services too and are growing that team,” says Melissa. “Long term, we would like to accommodate a full bridal party getting their hair, makeup and nails done at the same time.” To provide an even more incredible experience for all her clientele, The Beauty Lounge offers products for every kind of hair type and style. “We sell Mizani®, ColorProof®, Keratin Complex® and some Redken products,” she says. “We also sell maintenance items like satin pillow cases, continuous spray water bottles, detangling brushes and things of that nature that will help preserve people’s styles for a longer period of time.” For further convenience, Melissa plans to add an even more curated selection of items that their clients can use at home. “The demographics of our cities and of the United States are changing and people can’t run from texture anymore,” she says. “There are going to be more people with texture than without texture in the future. I think that we need to be ahead of the curve and really need spaces that can showcase what a salon could be as opposed to just following what salons have always been.” The Beauty Lounge offers a wide range of services from basic haircuts, styling and color to extensions, braids and texturizing. When you’re ready to make your appointment, call 612-227-9363 or go to its website mplsbeautylounge.com/ and choose the day, time and service you prefer. 3501 Hennepin Ave S., Minneapolis.

“We’re not pretentious. There are some salons where people feel they have to be dressed up, but we want people to feel comfortable coming in as they are. Regardless of their ethnic background, their gender, or anything else, this is a space that feels affirming and inclusive and where people are not being judged for who they are.”
