LIFESTYLE LETTER

Welcome to Summer

July 2022 PUBLISHER

Alexandra Patty | alexandra.patty@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Kassi Miranowski | kassi.miranowski@citylifestyle.com

Welcome to summer Minneapolis Lakes! I can’t believe we are already half way through 2022. Hopefully, you have been able to enjoy everything our community has had to offer so far. It seems like spring accelerated into the summer season without missing a beat. In this issue, we share a bit about three of our local Farmers' Markets. They are a great way to support local growers and Minnesota produce. And, although there are many to be enjoyed throughout the Twin Cities, we touched upon just a few of our team’s favorites. If you are looking for some adventure in your home and furnishings, we learned a bit more about the local company, Live Oak Ironworks, and how founder Clay Beardshear has fallen in love with metal. Clay and his team use its unique flexibility and beauty as a finished product for both hardware in your home, accents, as well as furniture. We also spoke with Chris and Julie Hansen of Owl Optical in Linden Hills. They are celebrating their 10 year anniversary this month, and could not be more excited to continue to bring the best and most popular eyewear to the local neighborhood. From Audrey Hepburn to Tom Holland, they keep their customers comfortable, on trend, and seeing straight. If you haven’t visited The Tasting Room, this is a spot to try! Boasting a fabulous, curated wine list, small bites, and an intimate outdoor patio – this neighborhood gem is a wonderful place to gather this summer. Looking for a new recipe to try? Bekah Rieke of Sage Spoon Living provides her fresh and healthy Walleye dish to try at home. Last, but not least, we have included information on the Mayhem Athlete workout, which incorporates exercise routines with very little equipment that can be accomplished anywhere. We hope you enjoy!

BUY FRESH AND SUPPORT LOCAL LOCAL FARMERS’ MARKETS TO VISIT THIS SUMMER

16

O UR TOWN | WEL L N ESS

Minneapolis has enjoyed farmers’ markets throughout the city since 1876. For the past 150 years, farmers’ markets have flourished with more than a dozen different locations open for the 2022 season. These markets are a key avenue to connect people with the food they eat. Bringing local produce into the city is more than a way to support local businesses, but it also encourages visitors to include more fresh fruits and vegetables in their diets while reducing the ecological footprint required to get them. Despite Minnesota’s short growing season of only approximately 163 frost-free days, Minneapolis farmers’ markets offer a wide bounty of organic, locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Here, we highlight three to let you know where you can find them, what to expect, and when they are open.

LYNDALE MARKET

BUY FRESH

By far the most iconic of Minneapolis farmers’ markets is its Lyndale Market. Known for its six red sheds, the Lyndale Market is open on weekends starting at 6:00am and running from the months of April to October. It is even open some weekdays, though the specifics often vary and will be confirmed on their social media beforehand. The Lyndale Market actually contains two different farmers’ markets for the price of one. The first three sheds are managed by the Central Minnesota Vegetable Growers Association (CMVGA) a non-profit that sells local fruits, vegetables and farmstead products. The other three sheds are run by the Farmer’s Market Annex which sells clothing, arts, crafts, and jewelry in addition to fresh fruits and vegetables. The Lyndale Market is the largest open-air market in Minnesota hosting up to 200 vendors on a given weekend. Just off of I-94, there is plenty of parking both beneath the highway, as well as on nearby streets. With various events throughout the summer and fall like Beer Gardens and live music, the Lyndale Market is a standby for a little bit of everything of the Minneapolis market scene. Visit mplsfarmersmarket.com/lyndale-market for more details.

EAST ISLES FARMER’S MARKET Located on The Mall starting at Irving, just north of Lagoon Ave, is the East Isles Farmer’s Market. This particular market is the first farmer’s market located in a Minneapolis Park. The East Isles Farmer’s Market was created in a partnership between the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and East Isles Resident Association to “Further the mission of building community, promoting green spaces, and fostering neighbor relations.”

The East Isles Farmer’s Market sells food and food-related products only, with a specific focus on “Heirloom produce, mushrooms, fruit, cheese, as well as vegan, gluten-free, and fermented products.” The market is open Thursdays from 4:00pm to 8:00pm starting June 23 and running until September 29th. Street parking is available along Irving and throughout the nearby neighborhood, and access to the East Isles Farmer’s Market by bus is made easy thanks to its proximity to the Uptown Transit Station. For a full schedule of food trucks at the farmer’s market, as well as a list of vendors you can visit the East Isles Farmer’s Market website at market.eastisles.org

NICOLLET MALL FARMER’S MARKET

18

The Nicollet Mall Farmer’s Market is one of the best ways to get fresh fruit and vegetables in downtown Minneapolis. Created in partnership with the Minneapolis Downtown Improvement District (DID) and the Minneapolis Farmer’s Market Partnership, Nicollet Mall Farmer’s Market has been both an attraction for the mall, and a convenient stop for those downtown since its creation. Nicollet Mall Farmer’s Market is open every Thursday from 10:00am to 2:00pm from the beginning of June through September. The market can be found on the Nicollet Mall between 6th and 9th street. While parking is available throughout downtown with street parking and on various ramps, foot traffic is the most common form of transportation throughout The Mall. More than 60 different local farmers and vendors sell at the Nicollet Mall Farmer’s Market throughout the season for the more than 50,000 people that call downtown Minneapolis home. Yet despite that wide variety, the slogan for the market continues to be, “The best part is you.” Visit mplsfarmersmarket.com for more.

Clay Beardshear

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALYSSA LEE PHOTOGRAPHY

20

M UST SE E | HOM E + D ES I GN

When Clay Beardshear was in college and working as a construction carpenter, he first truly noticed metals and fell in love with the ability to join steel. “It’s so versatile,” he says. “We really are able to manipulate it and there’s something really incredible in that. It also takes on so many characteristics based on the sort of elemental structure of it and the way it works with heat and the way it can work with different acids and finishing. It really is like an enormous canvas that you can play around with.” In 2010, Clay, who lives in Minneapolis, opened Live Oak Ironworks, which provides custom-designed furniture, fixtures, doors and architectural metals in his forge, or studio. “We work predominantly with steel for so many of our projects, especially when it comes to furniture,” he says. “But then there’s the stainless aspect of it, which is a whole different animal, and brass and bronze as well. They all have their own characteristics and their own nuance and are somewhat of a living patina for the whole of the object’s life and for the whole of our lives.” He and his coworker, Syd Meyer, do a lot of the designs in-house for homeowners and work with many great architects and interior designers as well. “By custom-making each piece to a client’s specifications, we’re able to focus on all of the details and make it look perfect,” says Clay. “I love the idea of people’s days beginning and ending with, say, a table that we made. You might pick up your keys every morning from that table and then when you get home at night, you put them back on that table. Every day you interface with this item that we have crafted for you.” Making these one-of-a-kind and unique pieces is also a great challenge. “If we can outdo ourselves every time, then that’s great,” he says. “Then we get to keep learning, keep evolving and getting better. That’s a profound thing in our work. We’re not just doing the same job forever. We’re doing a new job every time.” Clients sometimes bring in pictures of something they like, or describe an image that’s in their heads. “We’re able to work from a napkin drawing all the way up to a blueprint. We recently installed a table from a client-provided design and it was just wonderful, really beautiful. It was nothing that I ever would have thought to do, so sometimes it’s a collaborative relationship, which really benefits everybody and provides us with inspiration.” When someone commissions a piece, Clay and Syd like to visit his or her home if at all possible. “It’s great because we get to see the space we’re building for.” Clients can also come to the studio in Bloomington to talk about what they want and to look at examples. When clients see a finished piece, they often comment on the depth of the material and the textural nature of it, which is something one wouldn’t typically associate with metal.

“There’s a lot of detail to focus on so you can kind of get lost in it, which is really wonderful,” says Clay. “A lot of other people have said that our work ends up very soft, in a good way, meaning that it all just blends together and kind of flows.” Working with a wide range of talented architects and contractors provides him and Syd with some exciting large-scale jobs. “We get to sink our teeth into these big jobs where we’re building something that is then being surrounded by everybody else’s amazing work,” he says. “That is just a wonderful thing.” In addition to homeowners, contractors, architects, and designers, Live Oak Ironworks also does work for commercial clients. “We’ve made some pieces for restaurants, which is really nice because again, we’re thinking of people’s experiences around that big banquet table.”

22

M UST SE E | HOM E + D ES I GN

Since many of the pieces are very heavy, they often deliver the merchandise. “We give everybody the white glove treatment where we bring the item to them and set it exactly where it needs to be.” Clay has traveled to places like Oregon, New York, and California so he can personally deliver and set up pieces for clients. They can also ship merchandise. In addition to furniture, Live Oak Ironworks has done cabinets for kitchens and brass fixtures such as towel bars and vanities for powder rooms. “Once again, these things that people get to interact with on a daily basis become a part of their lives, part of their homes,” he says. “I feel really lucky to be doing what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. And I’m just looking forward to the future of it.” To find out more, or to commission a piece, visit their website at liveoakironworks.com or call (912) 604-6230.

YOURSELF IN STYLE EYEGLASSES THAT MAKE A REAL STATEMENT

Julie and Chris Hansen

30

T R E N D SE T T E R | PR OFES S I ONAL S E RVI CE S

Moscot

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCY HAWTHORNE

When Chris Hansen walked into an eyeglass shop in 1998, he had no idea he was taking the first step into his future. Julie, the part-time sales woman and college student who worked there and who was happy to assist him, would become his wife the following year. And then, in 2012, the two would open their own place, Owl Optical, in the Linden Hills neighborhood of Minneapolis. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, the eyeglass shop is known for its modern, vintage and trendy eyewear. Wearing glasses takes on a whole different connotation when you walk inside and see the endless choices of stylish frames. “Eyewear in general has become so much more about fashion,” says Julie, who majored in fashion at the University of Minnesota. “I’ll be looking through People magazine or on Instagram and quite often see frames that we sell. Our lines are worn by a lot of celebrities, but they don’t have logos on them - it’s more about the construction, the design and the details, which people are starting to appreciate more and more these days. “We carry a line called AHLEM from a French designer based out of Los Angeles. Sandra Oh and Tom Holland have been seen sporting these on the red carpet.” Adds Chris, “We also carry Oprah’s favorite, Götti, that she wears all the time.” Götti is a brand out of Switzerland, designed by Sven Götti. Owl carries legacy brands, as well, like the “Audrey,” for Audrey Hepburn, which was designed

by Oliver Goldsmith. “He even did a pair of aviators for Princess Di back in 1980,” says Julie. “His great-granddaughter now runs the company and reissues all of his original sunglasses, which even have the dates stamped on them. There’s also MOSCOT, which is out of New York and has been around since 1915. It’s still family owned.” One big change over the last 10 years is that everything is now computerized. Customers can fill out all necessary forms online before they come in, so they can go right into the eye exam room without having to spend time doing it in the waiting room. “We ourselves, though, do it the old school way,” says Chris. “We write everything on paper because people think it’s more charming.” Charm is something that this shop has in spades. There’s no counter blocking the area between the staff and customers and there’s nice comfortable furniture to make it feel homey. There’s even a children’s play area to keep kiddos occupied.

In addition to offering amazing optical choices, the couple believes in good old-fashion customer service. “We take the time to talk with our customers, to get to know their wants and their needs and learn who they are as people,” she says. “Our store motto is to treat people the way you want to be treated.” In addition to Chris and Julie, who are opticians, there’s their good friend and part-time optician, Mary Francis Freedman. “She’s great at what she does,” says Julie. “She loves fashion and vintage fashion too.” And from the very beginning, they’ve always had an optometrist available. Dr. Chad Legois is there on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. “We always wanted to be a full service shop and offer eye exams, contacts, glasses - everything that our customers need,” she says. For many people, glasses are a critical need in their everyday lives. Especially with so much time being spent in front of computer screens, blue light filtration and digital technology in lenses is more important than ever. They provide better clarity and less drain on the eyes.

Chris, with his graphic designer background (he handles everything on their website and designs their business cards) and Julie, with her fashion knowledge, make a great team, in and out of the store. When not working, they love spending time with their two kids. Since they rotate days that they work in the shop (except for Saturdays), one parent is always able to be home, which was especially convenient when the children were young. They also love going hiking. “Last summer we went to Sequoia National Park, and on our 20th wedding anniversary, we hiked Acadia in Maine,” says Julie. The couple live just 10 minutes away from their business, so many of their customers are also their neighbors. “There’s definitely a neighborhood feel here in Linden Hills,” says Julie. “We are lucky to have the customers that we have.” Owl Optical is also pet friendly. “We love it when people bring in their dogs,” she says. “I’ve had people leave their dogs outside, and I’m like, ‘Bring your dog in!’” To find out more about Chris and Julie and what Owl Optical has to offer, go to owloptical.com/. 4318 Upton Ave S., Minneapolis. WALLEYE WITH LEMONY GARLIC BASIL ZOODLES AND GRAPE TOMATOES 36

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

WALLEYE WITH LEMONY GARLIC BASIL ZOODLES AND GRAPE TOMATOES ingredients:

directions:

• • • • • • • • • •

You will want around 2 lbs of zoodles for this recipe which is why you can procure a little more when buying your zucchini (given that you will cut off ends and not use it all when cutting zoodles). Using your zucchini noodle maker, prepare zoodles. Alternatively, procure 1.5-2 pounds pre-cut zucchini noodles.

1. Prepare all of your other ingredients. 2. Heat a large skillet to medium heat and add 2 tablespoons oil to the pan. Season the walleye filets generously with salt and pepper. Place the fish in the pan. Cover the pan with a lid. Cook the fish 4 to 5 minutes per side or until the fish reaches a temperature of 145 degrees. Remove from pan and set aside. 3. Turn skillet up to high and sauté 4 tablespoons oil, garlic, and hot red pepper flakes (optional) for about 30-45 seconds until golden but not brown or burnt. Add zoodles to pan and sauté for 5-7 minutes tossing and turning zoodles throughout. Add lemon juice and lemon zest halfway through cooking. 4. Have a colander/strainer ready with a bowl underneath and dump the zoodles into the colander reserving the liquid. Let it drain until no more liquid is dripping and then add this liquid back to the pan. Reduce at high heat for 3 minutes or until liquid starts to bubble and look syrupy. 5. Place zoodles into a large serving dish. Drizzle the lemony syrup over top and top with tomatoes, fish, and basil chiffonade. Sprinkle with grated parmesan. Allow individuals to season with more salt/ pepper and grated parmesan if desired.

Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. These quick but effective workouts incorporate compound movements such as burpees, push ups and lunges. Compound movements use more than one muscle group, requiring more energy from your muscles to recover. This means you can continue to burn calories while enjoying the beach or sitting at work, long after the workout is over. The Mayhem Athlete M30 program offers two options for all fitness levels. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells. Mayhem Athletes’ easy to use app, SugarWOD, provides you with a warm up, workout, accessory cool-down, and coaching video - ensuring you get the most out of your 30 minutes! You can also find video demonstrations for each movement within the app and a community of like-minded individuals who are doing the same workouts around the globe.
