LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Toast to the Ladies!

May 2022 PUBLISHER

Alexandra Patty | alexandra.patty@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Kassi Miranowski | kassi.miranowski@citylifestyle.com

Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating the women in our lives. As I reflect on the many women in my life, including the ones who are no longer with us, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. I don’t know where I would be today without their love and influence. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence with oneself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed is so rewarding for everyone. Supporting and empowering the people in our own life can be something that might come naturally, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is so powerful. In this month’s issue we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark in our community in one way or another. We are also recognizing a few local women who are finding ways to give back to our community. Our team was excited to connect with Megan and Mikaela, the sister duo behind Les Sól fashion boutique in Linden Hills. They share their own story about the female influences in their lives and how community remains at their core. We caught up with Dr. Rosemary Lelich of Family Orthodontics, and share how she is helping to empower children and adults with her orthodontics practice. Minneapolis Lakes also interviewed a few of the women at MATTER and what inspired them to give back through this local and global organization. And if you’re looking for something special for Mother’s Day, wedding gifts, or just an “I appreciate you in my life” token of affection, New Gild has a rare and beautiful selection to celebrate special women in all occasions of life. Enjoy your May, your Mother’s Day, and of course – this issue!

The Power of Sisterhood

Comes to Life in a Truly Unique

Twin Cities Boutique Les Sól—women empowerment, with a passion for fashion and sustainable living

The sister-owned boutique Les Sól can be found in the Linden Hills neighborhood of Minneapolis, just a short walk from Lake Harriet. Founded by two women with a dream of creating an empire they could share in, Megan Harrod and Mikaela Harrod took on opening a sustainability-focused multi-cultural babe boutique. The women consider their shop “eccentric, but also high-end.” Looks span from llama decaled socks to Georgia O’Keeffe printstyle shirts, skincare lines, candles, and feminist birthday cards. The women are a strong team and even with a 12 year age difference, Mikaela Harrod wears the title Creative Director of Les Sól,

and Megan considers herself its Marketing Wizard. Finding a name that fit the shop’s collision of multi-cultural style and the sisters’ three favorite elements—earth, water, and fire—Les Sól was chosen. Sól is Polish for salt and sol is Spanish for sun, as is sol in French for ground, floor, earth and soil. In reflecting on how the shop came to be, they credit strong female influences that have brought them to where they are today. “My sister, growing up, I was like her second mom,” Megan said. “Our mom was working so much and has been one of those people for us who has been a huge influence on how we are and how we tackle changes.” Their mom, worked as a nurse-midwife, and watching her drive and purpose in her work drove the women to search for that purpose of their own. “She’s a strong woman and has always instilled in us that nothing is impossible, and that you can always blaze your own path,” Megan said. From a young age, Mikaela would sketch dresses and outfits in her notebook and later completed a degree in Fashion Design from the University of Minnesota. “We always loved fashion,” said Megan. Both Megan and Mikaela each worked and had experience at clothing boutiques and following college graduation, Mikaela brought up starting a boutique to Megan. Mikaela had found herself at a crossroads, not looking to jump into the corporate world and also wanting to be her own boss, blazing her own path. Fashion, travel and sustainability are not only core values of Les Sól, but also of the sisters’ lives. “We wanted to create this space that allowed women in all forms from all walks of life to come and feel like they could be beautiful no matter what their space, size, or anything was,” Megan said. “My sister is so passionate about helping women.” Their grandmother, another influence whom both had been close to, passed away in late 2019. “She was a feisty, kind of powerful woman,” Megan said. She also left the sisters an amount of money after her passing that was able to be invested in their passion project of Les Sól. The sum was instrumental for the business and helped to open the doors. But, right as the two started the boutique, COVID-19 unexpectedly joined the picture and complicated plans.

They launched the shop online, both harnessing their experience in content management and working with a fellow brand designer friend—the women worked to stay afloat until Les Sól could physically open shop. They used Mikeala’s apartment as the shop’s first warehouse. Starting the shop online the women were able to build their brand and its following with social media, which helped them create a community that was ready to step in-store. Once opening shop in September 2020, the women banded together with other Twin Cities boutique owners, even competitor shops, to collaborate and help each other bring in business while the world was slowing down. The sisters soon drove their shop into the category of Twin Cities local gems, upholding the city’s slow fashion scene of sustainably focused independent makers and creators. “Probably about 95% of the businesses

we carry—sustainability is a value at their core,” Megan said. “We have a large percent of BIPOC and female-owned businesses and we would like to maintain that.” To keep the spirit of Les Sol alive outside their global-style boutique, the shop hosts Instagram Live chats @shoplessol every Thursday at 7 p.m. called Communi Tea. Viewers can expect to see some local guests hop on and lots of weekly updates on the happenings at Les Sol—plugging the community with events and new shop pieces. The sisters have also discussed beginning a speaker series and possibly starting a coffee cart in the shop. “When we first started, we wanted to do events and create a space where people could come, not just to shop but to connect with the community, and we weren’t able to do that because of the pandemic,” Megan said. “We’ve been creative in hosting markets that feature local designers that were not able to carry but were able to feature them for these specific events. We want to do more of that in the future…Our focal point for this is year is really getting into the swing of things and bringing the community together so that we can learn and grow from each other,” Megan said. “It’s been missing for the last year and a half, two years now.”

Why We all MAT TER HOW ONE ORGANIZATION IS PROVIDING RESOURCES HERE AND AROUND THE WORLD

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATTER

28

G IV IN G BAC K | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

WHEN DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED WITH MATTER? WHY? Vicki Bachmann, VP of Business Partnerships: I joined MATTER a year and a half ago. Having observed throughout my career that most business professionals want to be part of something bigger, I was eager to utilize my skills and experience to help the corporate world make a difference through MATTER’s local and global initiatives. Katie Johnson, Director of Global Health Initiatives: Though MATTER is engaged in a variety of project areas around the world, there are two specific areas that were instrumental in my decision to join MATTER a year ago. The repurposing of medical supplies to hospitals around the world and the utilizing of nutrient dense food to nourish people in under-resourced areas were an integral part of my background and experience, and areas that I’m just really passionate about. Amanda Escen, Board President: My initial introduction to MATTER was when it was still called Hope for the City. At my former company, I had been nominated to attend a leadership course in which one module was focused on getting leaders to understand corporate giving policies. I went back to my business and realized we were not giving in accordance with the corporate guidelines. Eventually, I was able to change that and to get charitable dollars allocated to each of our regional offices. One of the stipulations was that funding needed to go to an organization in the local community. I found Hope for the City and organized a food packing event; I thought it would be really fun to create a company-wide competition to see what office could pack the most food. This idea eventually morphed into what we call “MATTERbox Madness” today.

HOW DO YOU ASSIST MATTER IN REACHING ITS GOALS? Vicki: MATTER’s mission is to help people launch projects that improve communities. We do this through a variety of initiatives and projects. Most of my time is spent working with community-minded real estate professionals through a unique initiative we call MATTERhouse. The concept is simple. Builders engage their suppliers and venders to participate in building a “House that Matters”. When the house is sold, the proceeds or a percentage of the proceeds are donated to MATTER. Not only does this help us advance projects that improve communities, but it provides these professionals with a way to use their businesses as a force for good. It’s a winwin for all involved!

“WE PARTNER WITH COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO PROVIDE 200,000 HEALTHY MEALS ANNUALLY TO CHILDREN AND FAMILIES” Katie: MATTER is committed to reducing medical waste by repurposing medical equipment and supplies to aid people and improve environmental sustainability. Through our MATTER 360 initiative, we have established relationships with hospitals, clinics and medical supply companies throughout the United States that donate their used and surplus medical equipment to MATTER. My role is to oversee the medical projects we launch overseas using these donated equipment and supplies. I work with our hospital partners on the ground to assess what is needed most in their communities so they can provide the dignified healthcare people deserve. Amanda: I joined the Board around 2013 and one year ago accepted the role of Board President. It’s been a joy to be part of MATTER and to see its growth. I implemented a weekly call with Quenton Marty [President of MATTER] and Jeremy Newhouse [Chief of Financial Strategy and Africa Projects] and the topics run the gamut; the call has helped me have a deeper understanding and appreciation of what goes on day to day. I share those conversations with the Board, who then work to solve issues or help in other ways, such as through our connections. I’m also on the Finance Committee, so I dig into and really make sure I understand the numbers in very good detail.

HOW DOES MATTER IMPACT PEOPLE BOTH LOCALLY AND GLOBALLY?

Amanda Escen

30

G IV IN G BAC K | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

Vicki: In many ways. First, we partner with community organizations to provide 200,000 healthy meals annually to children and families. This work is supported by corporations through employee engagement activities. The companies purchase volunteer kits for their employees that include everything needed to assemble the healthy snack packs that are then donated to our community partners. Second, our MATTER Innovation Hubs provide underserved youth in Minnesota and around the world with creative, student-centered learning environments to develop critical thinking skills while they learn coding and computer skills. Third, we repurpose donated medical equipment and supplies to improve healthcare in hospitals around the world. Fourth, we establish nutrition gardens to provide nutrient-rich

foods to communities in under-resourced parts of the world. We’ve also planted 75,000 Chaya trees in Africa to combat malnutrition. This is all done through extensive partnerships and collaboration. Katie: Over the last three years, we repurposed over 5.6 million pounds of medical supplies and equipment to equip hospitals and clinics around the globe. These healthcare systems serve communities that would otherwise not have access to the care they so desperately need. Locally, we outfitted a classroom at Saint Louis Park High School for a new nursing program for their students. They had a very low budget, but we were able to help them transform their entire classroom area into a hospital room, complete with all the equipment and supplies they need to offer an educational experience that will hopefully inspire hundreds of students to explore a career in nursing. Amanda: MATTER has just gone through a new strategic planning process - laying out what the future looks like and aligning responsibilities more flatly, where anybody and everybody can step up and take a leadership role. We have a wide range of experiences and different backgrounds on the Board and we’re able to pair our knowledge closely with what MATTER’s core competencies are to help them excel.

WHAT DOES BEING A PART OF MATTER MEAN TO YOU?

Katie Johnson

Vicki: I am so proud to be part of this collaborative group of women and men that make up the MATTER team. It’s energizing to know the impact we’re making here and around the world. I love working alongside businesses, helping them discover how they can give back to their communities and to see the sense of satisfaction they get from making such a meaningful impact in the lives of others. I don’t feel as though I’m working; it just brings me joy. Katie: I never before believed it when people said their jobs don’t feel like work. Now I understand what that means. This is one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. To be able to see the impact MATTER is having both locally and globally, and to be able to work with such amazing partners to accomplish this impact, is truly life changing. Amanda: I’m just super energized and excited for what the future holds for MATTER. I’ve seen it go through some hard times and what I see right now is just this incredible growth and a highly engaged team. When many nonprofits have sadly had to close their doors, MATTER is thriving. For more information and to support its mission, go to www.matter.ngo.

INDIVIDUALIZED ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT PROVIDED IN A CARING AND FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT

As a young teenager Dr. Rosemary Lelich wore braces, and from then on, she aspired to be an orthodontist. “The experience was transformative for my confidence and my evolution as a young person,” she says. “I wanted to be able to do that for other people.” In 2020, she took over ownership of Family Orthodontics in St. Louis Park from Dr. Angela Ross, who started the renowned practice in 1987. “I learned a lot from Dr. Ross during the five years we worked together,” says Dr. Lelich. “It’s been a powerful thing to continue to grow the practice; owning my practice and my business has been more fulfilling than I could have ever imagined.” She is the sole orthodontist in the office, so patients know who they’re going to see each and every time, and her staff is extremely friendly and professional. “I have the absolute best team,” she says. “They are a phenomenal group of talented, hard-working women, and together we create an atmosphere of positive energy, kindness and compassion. Our focus is our patients. As a Board-Certified Orthodontist, I create tailored treatment plans centered around my patients’ concerns and goals.” Dr. Lelich is immensely proud of the relationships she forms with her patients and enjoys seeing them grow through the process, whether it is a child or an adult in treatment. “It can take courage to come in as an adult. It’s exciting for me to help them accomplish goals that they might have had for a long time.” She explains that you’re never too old for orthodontic treatment, as long as your teeth and gums are healthy. “Almost half of my practice is adult patients. I am passionate about helping adults achieve the confident, beautiful smile they want while improving the health of their bite.” She and her practice receive amazing feedback online from patients such as: “I just got my braces off today! My experience at Family Orthodontist has been the best. The staff and dentist there were all kind and helpful. I personally felt that they took their time with my procedures and treated me well. I love how my teeth look now and I feel very confident.” Another patient commented, “Dr. Lelich is amazing! She is so experienced in her field and explains her treatment plans in the most simple, easy-to-understand way. The office is clean, modern, and welcoming. Absolutely love her assistants, too!” “We are an inclusive, welcoming community and love our diverse area and patient population,” she says. “It is very important to me that everyone feels welcome here.” Dr. Lelich is fluent in Spanish, having studied it for many years in school, abroad and then spending time in Spanish-speaking countries on dental exchange programs. She loves being able to communicate with her Spanish-speaking patients. In general, she explains, orthodontics does not have to be painful or take years to see results. “There are so many options available now. We have clear braces that are less noticeable and we have clear aligner treatments. I am a certified and experienced Invisalign provider. I also offer other options for more limited treatments or small adjustments, such as retainers to move teeth.”

DR. ROSEMARY LELICH CONTINUED >

35

Another important service she offers is early interceptive orthodontics. “The recommendation by the American Association of Orthodontics is to have every child screened by an orthodontist at age seven, because that is when we can assess if there are any growth needs or orthodontic needs that will get worse if we don’t intervene,” says Dr. Lelich. “If we catch them early, a simple, early phase of orthodontics can really help improve the overall structure and function for these kids. We now know there are many benefits to doing expanders at a younger age.” The technology has improved greatly with the use of 3D printed dental appliances. These create a better fit and are more comfortable to wear. “I feel incredibly fortunate to be an orthodontist,” Dr. Lelich says. “Another thing that is rewarding for me is when my young patients tell me they want to be an orthodontist when they

36

grow up. I just think that’s so, so cool, and the best compliment I can receive.” A native Minnesotan, Dr. Lelich spent many years away from Minnesota during her training. She was thrilled to return for her Orthodontic specialty residency at the University of Minnesota, and now to live and work in the community she grew up in. Dr. Lelich also has an active life outside of the office. “I actually got engaged last weekend!” she says. “I love to spend time with family and be outside, enjoy all that the lakes have to offer, play golf, practice yoga and travel.” To schedule an appointment with Dr. Lelich, find out more about the practice, and to learn how she can give you your most beautiful smile, go to www.familyorthomn.com. 5804 Excelsior Boulevard, St. Louis Park. HOW HAS NEW GILD EVOLVED SINCE YOU OPENED? New Gild started as two people with high standards and a big idea in a small storefront off the beaten path in Linden Hills. We wanted to embrace quality, honesty, luxury, and beauty in a comfortable and accessible environment. This April marks our fifth anniversary and we have grown so much in that time. Since our start, we moved our studio to a larger, more central retail space where more people can find us. Our team has grown from two to seven! We opened the New Gild Gem Lab, a location devoted to our gemology and appraisal services. Over time, we’ve created a unique aesthetic in our work that defines

our brand. We’ve evolved into making more luxurious pieces than ever before, and we just love making people sparkle--which was the big idea in the first place. TELL US ABOUT NEW GILD’S READY-TO-WEAR PIECES AND WHAT MAKES THEM UNIQUE? Unlike other stores that order manufactured pieces from big jewelry companies, we make the pieces in our cases, one at a time, the old-fashioned way. Everything starts with our deep appreciation for gemstones, which we handpick one at a time from our friends and partners in mining and cutting. This approach allows us to specialize in gems like spinel that big-box jewelers just don’t carry. We love everything from sapphire to beryl and unusual diamonds, too. The pieces we’ve crafted for our cases are designed by us and made from gems right here in our studio, using precious metals and expert craftsmanship, and of course love. The resulting treasures are each so unique and imaginative, and they carry with them the legacy of our work and passion. WHAT TYPES OF UNIQUE PIECES WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR GIFTING? A gift of jewelry in and of itself says something, and that something is, “you’re truly special.” Rings tend to be uniquely romantic, although they can also be given to anyone towards whom we feel tender. Bracelets, earrings, and necklaces make lovely gifts for anyone on your list. We love opals in pendants and earrings because that’s a tender stone that can break more easily in a ring. We love “misfit” diamonds that have unique clarity characteristics and unusual cuts, as chances are the recipient is also unique and unusual. We carry Montana sapphire jewelry, and this domestic gemstone is so beautiful and a perfect choice for anyone with a connection to the northwest or just someone who appreciates a gem mined here in the states. Aquamarine is a gem with special meaning for some; gemstone lore says that sailors took them out to sea to ensure they could find their way back, making it a wonderful gift to someone for whom our heart is their home. Because we have hundreds of one-of-a-kind items in inventory, we can help our clients find something that is both beautiful and symbolic.

DO YOU CARRY JEWELRY FOR BRIDAL, VOW RENEWAL, AND COMMITMENT CEREMONIES? The way we go about making jewelry is down-toearth, local, and thoughtful. We love crafting one-of-a-kind commitment jewelry for oneof-a-kind couples. Our craft-focused process attracts couples looking for pieces that represent their unique love stories. Whether we start from scratch or choose something from our cases depends entirely on our clients. Our custom process allows couples to be involved in the creation of their piece from start to finish. Our couples are so gracious to include us in their love stories and we are honored to be included. Our couples find the process of designing commitment jewelry to be fun, informative, and completely special. CAN YOU SHARE SOME OF YOUR CUSTOMER’S FREQUENT QUESTIONS WHEN THEY VISIT NEW GILD FOR THE FIRST TIME? Clients often ask right away, “why does it feel so different here?” Most people are accustomed to more traditional store displays and offerings, and they respond positively to an environment where the pieces have “story” and the staff love their work. They sometimes ask why they haven’t heard of some of the gemstones we carry, and the answer is, because we buy them one at a time. A large jewelry chain needs to make a significant number of any one item to ensure it’s available across all their stores--not us. We are also asked often about the ethical and environmental aspects of our materials. All of our metals are recycled, and we offer diamonds from Canada and gemstones from small, artisanal mines. All of our diamonds are purchased under the Kimberley process, which unites administrations, civil societies, and industry in reducing the flow of conflict diamonds. We love using our clients’ own inherited diamonds and gemstones, too, to incorporate the past into a beautiful new story.

IN CELEBRATION OF WOMEN AND MOTHER’S DAY - ARE THERE ANY INFLUENTIAL WOMEN THAT HAVE HELPED NEW GILD’S JOURNEY? Our start-up capital was loaned by Women Venture, a Twin Cities non-profit that exists to provide training, loans, coaching, and a community of support addressing the unique obstacles to business ownership that women face. We’ve met and been inspired and helped by so many of Women Venture’s staff members and volunteers that it’s hard to name names! Suffice it to say that this

organization has helped so many, and we’re lucky to count ourselves on that list. We also have to acknowledge our mothers, who have supported us from the beginning with their generosity with everything from their opinions to homemade snacks! They’ve encouraged us to create and grow New Gild, and their faith in us--even though we’re adults--means everything. For more information on New Gild, visit www.newgild.com. 4300 Upton Ave S., Minneapolis. (612) 402-0561.

FR ESH FOOD FOR SPR ING

Spring is such an enjoyable time to be a cook. It feels like everything is coming up for fresh air. The ingredients are picked with such a vibrancy we have been longing for, the sun is shining, and the produce is too. I love to keep it simple, green, and bright this time of year, and this pasta does just that. Let’s give broccoli the spotlight, it so rightfully deserves.

BROCCOLI SAUCE PASTA WITH TOASTED WALNUTS AND FRESH MOZZARELLA ingredients:

directions:

• • • • • •

1.

8C broccoli florets 1/2C parmesan cheese, grated 1/3C heavy cream, room temperature 1lb orecchiette pasta 2 lemons, zest of 2, juice of ½ a lemon 3/4Tsp salt + more for boiling water

2.

3. Garnishes: • Black pepper • Walnuts, toasted and chopped • Fresh mozzarella • Olive oil

4.

Boil broccoli florets in salted water until fork tender, strain, and transfer to a bowl. Begin to boil the pasta in salted water after the broccoli comes out. In a blender combine boiled broccoli, lemon zest and juice, heavy cream, grated parmesan cheese, and 3/4Tsp salt. Blend until smooth. Strain the pasta directly from the pot to a bowl, do not rinse the pasta. Add a splash of pasta water if the pasta is sticking to itself. Pour the broccoli sauce directly over the hot cooked pasta, in a bowl and toss together. Taste for salt. Plate the tossed pasta and garnish with fresh mozzarella, drizzle of olive oil, freshly grated black pepper, and toasted walnuts. Enjoy!
