New Growth this Spring
April 2022 PUBLISHER
Alexandra Patty | alexandra.patty@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Spring symbolizes new beginnings and growth. Here, in the Minneapolis Lakes community – spring is even more appreciated due to our short season. As nature reveals it’s beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors, our community is coming alive again. As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world and the desire to explore it. For Minneapolis Lakes as a publication, that means expanding and exploring into more people and businesses that help shape who we are, because there is always plenty to cover in our fabulous community. Our team encourages you to explore the multitude of diverse spots around town to discover, including new and existing restaurants with great patios to enjoy, hiking trails and parks to take in nature and the ever present and beautiful surrounding scenery of our city lakes! These will soon be bustling with people of all ages and backgrounds - biking, walking, rollerblading, skateboarding, swimming, volleyball and portable hammocks swinging in the breeze. For our April issue, we wanted to share with you some more local stories, so our team spoke with Greenway Dental’s Dr. Sam LaChance, on what makes their practice a bit unique. If you are close to them and need a new dental home, they are worth checking out! We also caught up with Sohil Goorha about his restaurant and labor of love, Raag (which has beautiful ambiance, amazing food and a team who is working to give back). Minneapolis Lakes also learned more about The Family Partnership and how this organization is making a difference for many across the city. And last, but not least, we included a fun overview of the hugely popular out of town destination - Nashville. Just in case our April temps are still on the cool side and you need a quick getaway. As always, we would love to hear from you about your favorite hidden gems in town and your go-to travel destinations, so drop us line at Citylifestyle. com/Minneapolislakes or share it with us on Facebook or Instagram. Wishing you all a happy spring full of adventure, peace, and sunshine.

Dr. Sam LaChance, now in his 15th year of dentistry, knew he wanted to be a dentist by the age of 17. “I wanted to do something in healthcare and I liked the art of dentistry,” he says. “I also felt it was conducive to my personality.” In 2019, he left a large group practice to open Greenway Dental. “I like the smaller team size, and it’s just a more intimate atmosphere,” says Dr. LaChance. “I have two dental hygienists and I’m the dentist, so it’s predictable, which I think people find reassuring. Our patients know who they’re seeing every single time and I think that makes a huge difference.” When patients walk into Greenway Dental, instead of a cold, clinical space, they’ll find a cozy, modern office with lots of greenery and local artwork hanging on the walls. “I like to support the community and the local artists in this area, and it helps it not feel like a stereotypical dental office.” Patients will also be greeted by his friendly front desk staff. “Unfortunately, because of COVID, we’ve had to get away from some amenities such as offering a cup of coffee, but we are starting to bring back some of the nice calming extras such as essential oils.” He says he sees a lot of anxious patients and has developed a reputation over the years of being a kind and calming presence. His approach to patient care is one of clarity and transparency and before he performs any procedures, he holds a no-cost meeting with patients. “I think it’s important for patients to know that they’re listened to and not just talked to and told what they need. I sit down and spend time with them. “There’s nothing worse than a patient having a procedure and then going to the front desk and not realizing exactly what they had done or how much it costs. So, I try to be very upfront with them about any work they may need to get them healthy, how much it will cost, and if they have insurance, how that may play into it. It’s a trust thing. Patients know they can come in and feel well taken care of.” After a patient has a procedure, Dr. LaChance follows up with a phone call to make sure they’re feeling okay, so the care doesn’t end once the patient pays the bill and walks out the door. “I like to check up on my patients a lot,” he says. “The idea of a dental practice to me is that you give patients a good experience and then they’ll want to come back.”

Since Greenway Dental is a family practice, people of all ages are welcome. And almost all dental procedures, such as implants, root canals, crowns or bridges can be done right in the office. Dr. LaChance also performs oral surgery. “I have a lot of patients who are surprised by that, and they’re glad they don’t have to go to another clinic.” Since oral health is so important, he focuses on comprehensive care with his patients. “Oral health is kind of the beginning of all of our health,” he says. “So, before we talk about whitening or veneers or anything cosmetic, we have to look at the health of the bone and the gum tissue and look for things like decay and cracked teeth. It starts with the foundation, so we have to take care of health first before doing the fun aesthetic stuff.” After performing aesthetic procedures, it always makes him happy when patients come in and tell him they smile with their teeth again. “Many actively hide their smiles because they’re not proud of them and

haven’t been for years,” says Dr. LaChance. “We can do something about that. We can make you smile again so you can show your teeth.” With his dental philosophy, it’s no wonder Dr. LaChance has been named one of Minneapolis’s Top Dentists. “I’m rated by my peers, which I think is awesome,” he says. “I know a lot of dentists and it feels pretty great to know that they believe I’m a trusted clinician in the community.” He also volunteers his time to worthy causes such as Give Kids a Smile, Mission of Mercy, and the Hope Dental Clinic. Dr. LaChance really loves the location in which he has chosen to practice his craft. “I like the idea of being a part of a community, being a part of the Whittier neighborhood. It’s a very lively, energetic area and it’s been fun to get to know my neighbors and local businesses. There’s a lot of camaraderie here.” To find out more about Dr. LaChance and Greenway Dental, go to https://greenwaydentalmpls.com/. 2309 Lyndale Avenue S., Minneapolis. (612) 424-6850.

The Family Partnership opens new advanced center to aid local families

The Family Partnership’s new Building for Better Futures resource center is open with a preschool, childcare, therapy services and more. This new facility moved into the heart of a neighborhood where its programs were already helping families, providing easier access. The facility has three times more space so The Family Partnership can better serve families. A $22.7 million capital campaign that started in 2014 included funding from the State of Minnesota, The Peter J. King Family Foundation and many more generous donors. The new center was able to open in 2021 despite the many societal factors working against it—including COVID-19 and the murder of George Floyd protests. “We broke ground in February 2020, and a couple minutes later, COVID started,” said Molly Greenman, President & CEO of The Family Partnership. Mortenson Construction finished the building in one year, faster than expected, Greenman shared. Plans of opening up the center were then able to come together in a relaxed timeline. The Four Directions preschool opened on June 4 and the full building on July 6. Throughout planning for and after opening the center, The Family Partnership worked closely with the community to hear out concerns and ideas on how to best implement positive change into the community. “We are right in the middle of a challenged community which is exactly where we wanted to be,” said Greenman. “One of the things we’ve been able to do is have meetings with the police and city officials and bring in our neighbors, both business owners and residents, to talk about ‘how do we protect the people who live and work and want to do business in the neighborhood.’” The Family Partnership’s focus is working with families that have experienced generational trauma, racism and
poverty. Mental health plays a vital role in beginning to help and to enact positive change for these families’ lives. The Family Partnership’s services from mental health, to bettering early education and supporting parents/ caregivers with children, all combine to support whole families to build health and well-being. “We take a two-generation approach, actually a multi-generation approach. If we work with a child—if we’re not working with the parents, then whatever impact we have is going to be short-lived, so we want to work with both kids and parents,” Greenman said. Access to The Family Partnership services is by self-referrals, referrals from county workers or other organizations. According to Greenman, families tend to stick with The Family Partnership. “In our preschools, we have some of kids whose parents have been in our preschools,” she said. The Family Partnership works with several public schools and PICA Head Start locations in the Twin Cities. They provide School Linked Mental Health from elementary to senior high schools while developmental therapy services are provided for preschoolers in Head Start locations. The Family Partnership has two preschools – in North Minneapolis and at the Bloomington & Lake street resource center. The preschools offer children developmental screenings within the first 30 days and access to on-site developmental therapy (occupational, physical or speech services) if needed to help overcome any barriers to learning. “In Minneapolis in general, for children living in poverty, approximately fifty percent test ready for kindergarten. Ninety percent of the children in our preschools test ready for kindergarten,” Greenman said. The Four CONTINUED >

If we work with a child—if we’re not working with the parents, then whatever impact we have is going to be short-lived, so we want to work with both kids and parents.” Directions preschool at Bloomington & Lake also includes language emersion classrooms in Dakota and Ojibwe by partner Wicoie Nandigenkan. The center’s expanded space includes the Mental Health Therapy program available for individuals and families of all ages and cultures. The center also provides better access to people impacted by human trafficking. The Family Partnership’s PRIDE (Promoting Recovery, Independence, Dignity and Equality) program supports survivors with a private and safe space. In 2021, The Minnesota Council on Nonprofits recognized The Family Partnership as the winner of its Nonprofit Mission Award for Innovation for the Executive Functioning Across Generations™ model. consequences of actions, inhibit impulsive behaviour and succeed in school and life. The curriculum approach counteracts the negative impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma faced by many young children and families, especially those living in poverty. The Family Partnership’s original curriculum for preschool classrooms, piloted in 2017-2019, led to national pilots in four states. In addition, the curriculum was adapted for home visiting and parenting group pilots supported by The Harvard Center on the Developing Child Frontiers of Innovation. For a non-profit founded in 1878, the new resource center offers flexibility to adapt to future service needs. Greenman said the move to Bloomington & Lake Street provides a central location. “We want to be where people who need our services the most have them available, so when they need them they are available.” For more information on The Family Partnership, visit www.thefamilypartnership.org

INDIAN FUSION CUISINE MEETS MINNEAPOLIS 32

HOMECOMING FOR PROGRESSIVE INDIAN BAR AND RESTAURANT
Tradition is changing course at a revamped Indian restaurant on 50th & France, mixing Indian spices with international cuisine. Bringing this fusion of flavors is Raag, the venue looking to take strides forward in the city’s Indian restaurant game. “Our city has many Indian restaurants with traditional dishes, Raag appeals to people seeking refined cuisine with Indian flavors ” said Sohil Goorha, the new Raag owner. As a hospitality professional, Culinary School graduate, and self-proclaimed globe trotter, Goorha has traveled to and dined in 20+ countries. He wanted to bring the tastes of modern-day India to Minneapolis. Since December 2020 under his new management, he has curated a progressive menu designed by Food Network Master Chef Ajay Kapoor, and hired new chefs who trained in Michelin rated restaurants. Goorha has also introduced new programs making a family-owned Raag into a class-act, fine dining destination. He enjoys meeting his guests and learning their experiences during their visits. At times you may run into his daughter Cira Goorha (4) who brightens the room with her personality.

C HE F ’S SE LE CT ION | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
The word “Raag,” meaning symphony, is a sentiment to the venue’s grandeur of both palace and palette. AwardWinning Interior Designer Kara Bigos of Kamarron Design created the interior of Raag. The design incorporates subtle inspired accents of India, and the star of Raag’s decor—which Goorha calls “The Lady on the Wall”- is a mural painted by a local artist of a woman embellished in traditional jewelry and a flowy robe. “We have a venue and food that is as good as what is offered at high-end Michelin rated French, Italian or Japanese cuisines, or for that matter a refined American steak-house, but we keep the food traditional so that it appeals to all palettes with a progressive twist” Goorha said. “When I say progressive and traditional, we offer dishes like ribs, sliders, sea bass, salmon, lamb chops and Canadian poutine. These are all dishes you would not expect at a traditional Indian restaurant”. Raag Glazed ribs takes the classic ribs and infuses them with a tamarind sauce glaze. “People who don’t know anything about Indian food can start off by trying these ribs, samosas and Seabass,” Goorha said. The restaurant’s best-selling starter is a Coconut Soup which is vegan, gluten-free and infused with Indian sage and curry. “Every sip will give you a
traditional coconut flavor but at the same time teases your palette with very mild seasoning of spices,” Goorha said. Beyond the main dish spectaculars, the menu notably hosts extensive vegan and vegetarian options, which Goorha says is again uncommon for a high-end Indian restaurant. Goorha credits the excellence of the menu from its “gastronomy” kitchen. “We experiment a lot with foods, fruits, flowers along with spices,” Goorha said. One of Raag’s dishes, Blackened Chicken, is a boneless chicken cooked in clay oven marinated with edible charcoal. By taking these new-age cooking risks, the restaurant garners foodie attention. Crusted Seabass is the restaurant’s newest concoction. The dish is a fillet of prime Chilean sea bass seasoned with chef special rub, coated with walnut crumbs, and cooked using a “secret” tandoor oven technique, served with baby carrots, asparagus, and house salad. Experimenting with traditional Indian dishes opened a door for Raag to consider each dish’s health benefits and how they could make each plate its own superfood. The menu also keeps the traditional staples of Delhi Butter chicken curry, Paneer tikka masala, Biryani, samosas and naan bread. CONTINUED >

Aside from the glamour of the main menu, Raag’s bar mixes its cocktails with the same approach its chefs take to experimenting in the kitchen. The drinks are sprinkled with traditional spices, infused with fruits, and entertain guests with flavors they rarely encounter. Raag’s signature drink, Kerala Spice Trail, is a bourbon mixed with their homemade bitter. The drink is served on the rocks with smoked cinnamon and orange peel. Raag has positioned itself to be a family-oriented foodie spot for all taste buds and also a place to sit with friends around the bar. The bar serves bottomless mimosas and bloody marys for brunch on weekends and hosts live music every Wednesday. As a full-blown venue, this new era of Raag has turned its focus to community development and community event hosting. Raag Event Management team has been created to host gatherings such as fundraisers, rehearsal dinners, support dining needs for events around Minneapolis and private in-home dining (if someone is looking to be the dinner party host of the year). “Raag is not just a restaurant, it is a concept and a destination. We are creating a new identity of Raag to support everything that makes our community special and Raag will be at

center of this culinary experience, “ said Goorha. “We are not thinking small. We are actually one of the bars carrying the biggest selection of alcohol with the most beautiful display.” In February 2022, Raag hosted its first Charity event in support of the mental health of front-line workers in partnership with MN Mental Health Advocate and plans to continue its work with other such initiatives. The venue is suited for up to 125-person events, extending to Raag’s outdoor patio in the warmer months and offers easy access and free onsite parkingon either side of the complex. “My vision is an evolving Raag with the city of Minneapolis. I have spent decades in corporate and experienced the best of dining across the world. Locals and visitors from near and far remember the cuisine and the experience in places they live in or visit. We want Raag to be the local hangout spot and a destination,” Goorha. “We have locals that come here every evening, just to sit and talk and have a drink. We have seen guests from all over the country coming in to enjoy this unique experience. We are proud to be local Minnesotan with national and growing international appeal.” For more on Raag, visit www.raagindiancuisine.com. 3812 W 50th St., Minneapolis. (952) 405-8367. Visit Music City
Getaway to Nashville
and ‘Write Your Own Music City Story’
Write your own music story. That’s exactly what the chefs, artists, historians, musicians and impassioned locals of Nashville want visitors to do as they dive into this culturally diverse and oh-so-friendly city. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Music City to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this city rich in experiences that only Nashville can give. It’s a destination drenched in distinction with elevated tastes, down-home charm and a range of discoveries both well-known and emerging—Nashville is ready to rock your world. With recent headlines such as “Top destinations for food and city lovers” (Tripadvisor), “Most anticipated hotel openings of 2022” (Forbes), and “Top global venues for live music” (Tennessean), Nashville has so much more than you’ve ever imagined, and we’re here to round up our recommendations for you. Whether you’re a Nashville enthusiast or a novice soon to cross this off your domestic bucket list, you will love the medley of past meets present and Southern roots paired with modern amenities. As the largest city in Tennessee, Nashville boasts an impressive array of destinations, including luxurious hotels such as the Sheraton Grand in the heart of downtown, Urban Cowboy, Noelle and The Hermitage Hotel, which houses the upscale restaurant Drusie and Darr, led by world-renowned chef Jean-Gorges. Come and enjoy a truly elevated dining experience that reflects the new era of Nashville. When ready to absorb the historic side of the city, the centuries-old landmark and winery, Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery, offers guests “historic tours, family tours, wine and food pairings, bourbon tastings and chef-inspired food and wine pairings” that are unparalleled in their local experience. Likewise, Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery carries an incredible story of origination and bottles a remarkable 1860 family recipe that made Tennessee Whiskey world famous.
38
T R AV E L J OU R N A L | TR AVE L
Let’s talk about one of the most anticipated— the food scene! Three things Nashville is known for are hot chicken, barbecue, and meat & three restaurants. Meat & three is a traditional Southern, cafeteria-style eatery with three meats changing daily, such as roast beef, meatloaf, fried chicken or catfish, plus your choice of three vegetable sides. Nashville has amassed a lot of attention over the last 10 years for its exquisite food scene, with several James Beard award-winning chefs and an incredible independent restaurant scene. People know how good the food scene is, but if they really want to find those independent chef-driven restaurants like Rolf and Daughters, FOLK, Bastion, Locust, or Henrietta Red, these are the chefs that garner a lot of attention that you won’t want to miss. Along with these notable culinary establishments, don’t overlook mainstays such as Arnold’s Country Kitchen, a traditional meat & three that has been in the same family for decades and where chefs love to eat because everything is sourced locally and delicious. Whether it’s traditional Southern food or higher end chef-driven cuisine, the quality is expected and delivered. You can also find dozens of amazing rooftop bars and cocktail lounges, as well as many hidden bars you can dig around for, such as the one in the Noelle hotel. For the art lovers at heart, Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, streets art, public art, art galleries and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings. Music history venues such as the new National Museum of African American Music will complement your old favorite Frist Art Museum, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, and Grand Ole Opry experiences. According to @visitmusiccity, “Everyone should do the Grand Ole Opry one night; it’s not just about the music, it’s a piece of history and the world’s longest running radio show.”

As for the lay of the land, Nashville is definitely a city of neighborhoods. Each neighborhood is known for its own distinct feel and personality. East Nashville is funky, artsy, trendy and quirky. Germantown is a little more upscale with its chefdriven restaurants and walkable nature, known as Nashville’s first neighborhood founded by German settlers. 12South has eateries, boutique shopping and a lot of local favorites. Wedgewood-Houston is in transition mode right now with great breweries, distilleries, bakeries and art galleries. In the end, they all have their own scene. Plus, you can shop your heart out at a wealth of boutiques, galleries and local maker shops, as well as Nashville’s upscale The Mall at Green Hills brimming with luxury stores such as Golden Goose and Gucci. Last but not least is the music scene. Whether you’re into blues, jazz, honky tonk, rock, symphony or quite literally any genre of music imaginable, Nashville has it all. Spend one night on Broadway hopping bar to bar, sit orchestra-side at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, tour and take in a show at the 130-year-old Ryman Auditorium, then experience a songwriter’s night at The Bluebird or The Listening Room Cafe. The music is different every night everywhere, so one is best served by referring to visitmusiccity.com for their Upcoming Concerts Calendar to soak up all the magnificent sounds. There’s often a general misconception that if you don’t like country music that you won’t enjoy this musically rooted city. This could not be farther from the truth, according to the team of lifestyle experts at Visit Music City. “There’s a lot more than just country music happening here. Country music laid the foundation that put all of these song writers, studios, musicians and infrastructure into place for all of this music to happen. But whether you like country music or not, what you don’t realize is that there’s a lot of music you might like that you never thought of as country.” This is a revelation that will pleasantly surprise many. And, what better way to bestow a no-questions-asked travel itinerary than with the locals’ knowledge. “Once people experience the genuine hospitality of Nashville to the level they do, many are surprised by how incredibly friendly people are.” Visit Music City Visit Music City offers a complimentary service called Trip Planner where you can contact their “Nashville Experts” who work on the visitor experience team, and they will help as much or as little as you want, including an entire agenda or a few suggestions (See “Plan a Trip” on the site).
