LIFESTYLE LETTER
Welcome to March Minneapolis Lakes! Hopefully this month we will have bright sunny skies, pockets of warmer weather, and the biggest snow storms will be behind us. March is our annual Home issue, and whether you want to move, build, or make simple updates, we’re excited to bring you some new and refreshing ideas. We realize that creating a home you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy, especially with today’s challenges. In this issue, we spoke with Michael Anschel of Otogawa-Anschel Design + Build on the importance of looking ahead and building for the future. OA’s foundation, culture, and passion lies in building, renovating, and remodeling sustainably while keeping the needs of your family top of mind. Melinda Nelson writes about White Oaks Savanna, a development just outside of Stillwater which blends beautiful architecture, design, and careful consideration of the land. If you’re looking for smaller updates, maybe a new rug can refresh your space. Keljik’s provides pro tips for purchasing and caring for an Oriental rug. If paint is on your list for 2022, Hirshfield’s sheds light on the newest and most popular trends of the season. Moving outside the home, we covered Organic Lawns by LUNSETH, and their program to leave your yard healthy and happy. Last, but not least, we have a few ideas from nationally known Daphne Oz. Daphne has a refreshingly realistic approach to balanced living, which has made her an in-demand speaker on all things food, wellness, motherhood and lifestyle. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share and the memories that are made within the walls of our homes remains what is most important – even if you don’t have the latest trends or updates. So, in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, “May your troubles be less and your blessings be more, and nothing but happiness come through your door.” Happy Spring, A L E X A N D R A P A T T Y, P U B L I S H E R @MINNEAPOLISLAKES

When the team at Otogawa-Anschel (OA) designs a new house or remodels an existing one, they don’t just envision what it can be today, but how it can work for many years to come. Their goal is to build a structure that is timeless and will serve multiple functions over its lifetime. “We, of course, take into account the immediate needs of the current family, but we know that those needs are going to change and their styles are going to change,” says OA’s owner, Michael Anschel. Living abroad for a number of years has clearly influenced the way he thinks about space. “Especially in cultures like China and Japan that have unique perspectives on time and of our place in the world and our relationship to the world and to each other, it really impacts the way we approach our entire process,” he says. While others may look at a structure and decide they’re going to do something radical, that’s definitely not their philosophy; they also steer away from fleeting trends. “Those might look good in magazines, but living in them doesn’t nurture the soul,” says Michael. Plus, he explains, they may only serve to be useful for a short period of time and that’s a problem. “We want to make sure we’re looking at it not just now but in the future, so whatever we’re doing either has to be a long-term improvement for the structure overall or it has to be something that can be easily undone for future owners with different needs.” To do this, he and his team choose materials that have resilience and longevity such as solid woods that can be refinished and modified. And, the award-winning design firm strongly adheres to the guidelines of green building with a focus on sustainability. “At the end of the day, green building is a responsible way to approach the design and construction of buildings,” says Michael. “There’s no good reason for us to knowingly use materials that would create an unhealthy indoor environment for our clients or to expose our employees and subcontractors to materials that are unhealthy for them. We also want to build a structure that is resilient and will be able to withstand the elements for many years to come.” He adds, “Everything in green building is good basic common sense. Build like you care about the occupants, your workers and the structure. For example, you should seal and insulate properly so the home doesn’t use a ton of energy to cool and heat itself. It’s not magic, but it’s not the norm. A home that’s built cheaply is going to cost more later on when the homeowners need someone to come in and do it right.” OA recently completed a remodel on a very old home in Minneapolis. “The house is over 100 years old and the original build of the house and the foundation were excellent, but it was in disrepair and had some badly done remodeling that had to be undone,” says Michael. “We got to tear a lot of that apart and put it back together the right way, so we fundamentally changed the layout of the house and opened up some spaces.

“We also used a lot of reclaimed materials and salvaged as much as possible, and we did a lot of matching of existing millwork, which is something we do often.” All of the materials used were free of formaldehyde and the finishes were ultra-low or zero VOC (volatile organic compounds). Energy efficient windows were also installed to ensure the home was super tight and efficient. This beautifully restored home will be open to the public this summer as part of the Artisan Home Tour, so people will be able to see the amazing craftsmanship and design that went into it. Along with these high-quality building practices, Michael also credits OA’s success to his team. “I have an awesome team,” he says. “We take care of our people, and it’s a place where they get to explore their craft and do what they love, and we support them in that. To make sure things are done right, you have to have a team of like-minded and ethical, responsible and caring individuals. This is a group that wants to work together, that is willing to ask for help when needed, and to make sure things are done right for the client.” In addition to supporting his team, he also believes in helping the communities in which they do business. “I’ve been a Rotarian for a very long time, and part of that ethos is that a strong

community supports business and in order to have a strong business, you need to have a strong community,” says Michael. “The underlying idea is to be out there either using funds to support the causes that are important for our community to be healthy or putting in the time to support those people or groups who are marginalized or at risk.” He is not only a business owner, but a native of Minneapolis who received his degree in Art with a Chinese minor at the University of Minnesota. He and his staff engage in community service throughout the year. “Having it built into their life and into their contract that this is something we have to do is usually met with a smile.” After 27 years in the business, Michael still finds plenty of inspiration to keep it fresh and exciting. “The client who walks into their new space and is just bubbling up with excitement and joy - that is the fuel that keeps me going. Or, when I visit a job site and everyone’s happy, and I get this camaraderie and bonding moments with a group of amazing individuals who love what they’re doing– these things are really daily inspirations.” To find out more about Michael and his team, go to otogawa-anschel.com. 3212 Hennepin Ave S | (612) 789-7070.

Organic Lawns by LUNSETH provides a healthier yard

“It probably started when I had children,” says Shay Lunseth, owner of LUNSETH Lawn Care Professionals with her husband Eric. Shay continues, “I started making baby food for my first born from organic fruits and vegetables.” Sustainability has always been important to Shay and she cites becoming a mother as the moment that opened her eyes even more to the chemicals that exist around us. “It just dawned on me. I just don’t like any of this, and don’t want it in my world” said Shay. That realization pushed LUNSETH Lawn Care Professionals into the world of organic treatments and they haven’t looked back since. Eric Lunseth started LUNSETH Lawn Care Professionals in 2007 after a decade of experience in the lawn care industry. Originally, it was a commercial mowing and landscaping operation but then quickly expanded. Shay and Eric began experimenting and “created an organic program on our own lawn that was doing well.” And from that first successful program the organic lawn care side of LUNSETH sprouted. Upon the birth of their second child in 2010, Shay left her full time job to work on creating an entirely new division at LUNSETH, focusing solely on organic lawn care. “I feel like I convinced Eric that it would be a good idea,” said Shay, laughing about that transition, “It was a very scary prospect.” Shay decided to educate herself about organic lawn care so that she could, “speak about it intelligently.” In 2013 Shay began a Masters of Professional Studies at the University of Minnesota focusing on horticulture and more specifically organic turf management. This deeper knowledge of their process and available products was a focus because “it’s common to see products marketed as organic when they aren’t,” says Shay, “so when creating an organic
lawn care program, that understanding is key. Not only to maintain the promise of a fully organic lawn care program, but to ensure that it works.” Organic Lawns by LUNSETH serves over 1600 customers. Their standard seasonal program consists of four trips to each home completing seven services within those trips. “Working this program for 3-years can get you a 90-95% reduction in weeds and a healthy lawn that can better work on its own to be resilient to drought, disease and weed pressure,” says Shay. “We often think of fertilizer as feeding the grass plant but it really comes down to the microorganisms in the soil. Organic turf management is really soil management. Healthy soil makes grass much more resistant to stressful conditions as well as being better for local pollinators.” When it comes to organic lawn care, much of what Shay and Eric do is educating and managing expectations. Organic Lawns by LUNSETH has made a point of sharing information: “I don’t want to keep things a secret. We try to be an open book. Anybody is welcome to call and ask questions. They don’t have to be a customer for us to spend time with them and share information with them.” says Shay. LUNSETH strives to educate and work with homeowners on when and how to water as well as the best mowing practices. Shay says the process is always collaborative: “The homeowner does need to do their part. It’s a partnership.” That level of communication is especially important when it comes to weeds and what a lawn is and should be. “Our customers understand that having 5-10% of weeds in their lawn is good diversity and often can be good for our pollinators. Dandelions, clover and creeping charlie all provide food for our pollinators. There are customers

Not only to maintain the promise of a fully organic lawn care program, but to ensure that it works.” that will never switch over from chemicals and synthetic products for that reason,” says Shay. “It’s important that everyone is on the same page so that the program can work best. I don’t want to hard sell anybody. We want someone who has been looking for this service and they already know their why.” Though organic lawn care is still a niche market, it is becoming more mainstream from both a local and statewide level. Programs like the 2019 ‘Lawns to Legumes’ provide grants and payments to pollinator-friendly residential lawns across Minnesota. Shay also mentions the growing

movement across neighborhoods and homeowners’ associations to ban chemical fertilizers to create healthier environments for the community. All these efforts strive to change preconceived notions about what a lawn is, should be, and look like. Organic programs, no matter where they originate, “are the future of lawn care,” says Shay, “and it just makes sense to have a business that mirrors helping instead of harming.” Organic Lawns by LUNSETH works on both residential and commercial properties providing organic lawn care services. Most true Oriental rugs are one of a kind and made of wool, and tend to outlast other types of floor coverings used in the home. Since wool is a natural fiber, it is a much healthier choice than carpet which oftentimes contains synthetic materials and chemicals. Cleaning is recommended every 2-4 years depending on colors and traffic. This maintenance can extend the longevity of your rug for generations.
BEFORE YOU SHOP, CONSIDER THESE HELPFUL TIPS: • Get the rug first! Paint and wallpaper are then easier to match. • Measure for the largest and smallest size that will fit in your room. • Take note of any obstacles in the way, such as floor vents, radiators, and steps. • Think about the desired effect - formal or casual. • Have a basic color scheme that you like. • Understand the type of lighting and whether it’s natural or artificial. • Accommodate for the colors of your floors – light wood vs. dark wood • If the rug will be used in a dining room, it should be large enough so that the chairs can be pulled away from the table while still on the rug.
Keljik’s welcomes emails and phone calls for any questions. 4255 Bryant Ave S. Minneapolis. Call 612-823-6338 or visit keljiks.com for more information.

AT HOME ON THE SAVANNA WHITE OAKS SAVANNA, A UNIQUE, ARCHITECTURALLY-DRIVEN COMMUNITY, OFFERS A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO LIVE IN HARMONY WITH NATURE, YET CLOSE TO STILLWATER Even though spring has barely sprung, design aficionados are already marking their calendars for the third weekend in September, when the AIA MN Homes by Architects Tour makes its annual debut. For anyone who loves great architecture, the Tour is the design equivalent of the Tour de France, the Indy 500, and Superbowl Sunday. Lured by the invitation to see inside more than a dozen homes designed by local architects, these design-savvy superfans welcome the opportunity to meet local architects, chat with custom home builders and talk design with like-minded fellow guests. (For guests who can’t participate in person, a number of the homes can be viewed online with dynamic 360-degree virtual tours.) While much of the Tour usually wends around Linden Hills, Lake Harriet, Lake of the Isles and Bde Maka Ska, White Oaks Savanna has quickly become a favorite stop on the Tour. Situated about four miles west of downtown Stillwater, this unique, architecturally-driven community consists of 30 home sites
on 200 acres of lush prairie. With expansive lots ranging in size from five to seven acres and 120 acres reserved for organic farming, plus easy access to Stillwater and the St. Croix River Valley, White Oaks Savanna is a low-key Midwestern cousin of Napa Valley and the Hamptons. Unlike many suburban communities that are controlled by large national developers, White Oaks Savanna is a labor of love for local owners David Washburn, a former organic farmer, and Bob Appert, a top custom home builder and owner of Redstone Architectural Homes. David and his wife Meg ran Red Cardinal Farm for more than 20 years on the 120-acre Masterman Farm adjacent to the historic, 200-acre Robert Carlson farm. The Carlson farm was a commercial enterprise, so the soil was heavily depleted due to years of heavy fertilizing. But, the landscape was breathtaking, with a hundred-year old barn, undulating hills, natural ponds, stands of forest and open expanses of prairie. CONTINUED >

Before Mr. Carlson passed away, he introduced David and Bob to his daughter and her husband. They explained their vision of a small, architecturally-driven community and their desire to restore and protect the land. With the couple’s blessing, they acquired the property. Their first order of business was to christen the land. For David, this was both an honor and a responsibility. “I grew up on the south shore of White Bear Lake and while I was still a kid, my grandfather’s Juneway Farm became Dellwood Country Club (originally Dellwood Hills), so I’m passionate about local history and nature,” says David. “I researched the provenance of the land and learned that before it was a farm, it was likely an oak savanna, a prairie grassland where oaks are the dominant tree species. When Bob and I counted 18 original open-growth white oaks trees on our land, we decided to name it White Oaks Savanna.” “Long ago, oak savannas were common across Minnesota and the Midwest,” adds Bob. “They were cherished by the Native Americans since they were prime habitat for bison and other wildlife. Left unattended, the savannas would naturally fill in with trees and shrubs, so the Native Americans would set controlled fires to maintain the open land. But, because oaks are naturally fire-resistant and lightning-resistant, they continued to grow and thrive until European settlers arrived and began clearing the land for farming. “As the Twin Cities metro area continues to grow, oak savannas are increasingly endangered in Minnesota,” says David. “As stewards of White Oaks Savanna, we’re honored to preserve this vital ecosystem for families and individuals who care deeply about living in harmony with nature.” White Oaks Savanna’s first house was featured on the 2020 Homes by Architects Tour. Designed for a young family by Christopher

Strom of Christopher Strom Architects and built by Redstone Architectural Homes, the clean-lined modern home is nestled into the land overlooking a pond. Echoing David’s belief that christening a property is an honor, the couple’s young daughter named the home “Eye-Land” for the spectacular views of nature in every direction. This year’s Tour guests will be able to hop in a golf cart, tour the savanna and view several homes in various stages of construction. Sandhill Residence, designed by Kristine Anderson and Tammy Angaran of PKA Architecture with landscape architect Travis Van Liere, is a striking modern home with a palette of natural colors and organic textures, solar panels and a swimming pool. Built by Redstone Architectural Homes, Sandhill Residence will be open to visitors on the 2023 Homes by Architects Tour. “Four years ago, there were no Sandhill cranes on the savanna,” notes David. “But, as a delightful result of our prairie restoration efforts, Bob and I have counted nearly six-dozen Sandhill cranes that return in the spring and take up residence in the ponds and marshes.” And, like the Sandhill cranes, a number of people with Minnesota roots have flocked to White Oaks Savanna after living out of state for many years. For one former Alaskan with fond memories of a Minnesota childhood and a love of Norway, Christopher Strom designed “Valdres,” a modern, Nordic-inspired home that takes its name from a Norwegian portmanteau word for “the valley of pastures in the forest.” While more than half of White Oaks Savanna’s 30 home sites have been sold or reserved, David and Bob have a selection of beautiful lots that are still available, ready and waiting for people who share their appreciation for nature and a passion for great design. HEALING COLORS 2022 COLOR TRENDS FROM BENJAMIN MOORE & HIRSHFIELD’S

We are immersed in color! It’s so much a part of us that we may not even notice its (omni) presence, but the impact color has on us and our interaction with it is a significant part of our lives. Color trends bubble up as an awareness or statement of our mood, current needs and our ever-changing environments. We surround ourselves with colors that help us navigate the latest shifts. Currently we’re turning to greens, terra-cottas, muted color-washed tones, hopeful hues and statement tones that reflect our personality; they’re colors we’re making priorities in our homes for a variety of reasons relating in large part to what’s happening in our world.

HE ALING COLORS
All things green is a strong trend currently and various shades of it have been chosen as the 2022 Color of the Year by several paint companies, including Benjamin Moore. Green reflects our desire for calming nature, renewal and growth, and the healing that comes from the way green can act as nature’s pain relief. Its effect can be restful and refreshing. Green shades can expand and cool a room, giving us space to breathe. In a time when our routines have been changed, green brings a feeling of restoration and freedom. The three greens in Benjamin Moore’s 2022 Trends palette — “Fernwood Green”, “High Park” and the Color of the Year “October Mist” — are soft, muted and easy to incorporate into our homes. Terra-cotta shades are bringing us warmth and security and help to make us feel grounded, which is a big benefit when unprecedented changes occur in our lives. Benjamin Moore’s “Wild Flower” and “Venetian Portico” are shades in this year’s trends that add a little punch and interest to the palette without being overwhelming. Being grounded is helpful when the world feels chaotic, but we’re also simultaneously craving travel. Muted, color-washed tones that remind us of exotic and anxiety-free destinations are being painted on our walls. Soft blues, lilacs, lemon and sage greens remind us of easy sun-soaked days and renewing our spirits. They are the primary focus of both the Benjamin Moore and Hirshfield’s 2022 Trend palette, including the hope-filled soft lilac of Hirshfield’s Color of the Year, “Desiree”. Along with the serenity represented in “Desiree” and Benjamin Moore’s “Hint of Violet” is a spiritual strength that symbolizes our ability to create our own happiness and joy. This personal agency is also appearing in our homes as part of the Maximalist trend: bold feature walls, large patterns and inspiring accent colors that are visual representations of our individual personalities. Yellow is one of those strong colors and has been trending for a few years. And yellow continues to influence several of Hirshfield’s and Benjamin Moore’s 2022 palette tones. “Collector’s Item” from Benjamin Moore is a yellowed-white with a unique hint of pink that reflects a larger trend to warm up the bright whites we’ve been seeing. Whites in general are softening up and after years of being crisp to complement the huge wave of gray, they are heading back in the direction of warmth and creaminess.

The neutrals have shifted away from the grays of the past few years and are warmer, cleaner shades of beige. Hirshfield’s “Sheepskin” and Benjamin Moore’s “Natural Linen” are easy colors that work with the color-washed tones of the 2022 palettes. The additional neutrals have, not surprisingly, a hint of green to them: Benjamin Moore’s “Morning Dew” and “Quiet Moments” and Hirshfield’s “Lady Nicole” are background colors with a hint of interest to help our spaces feel fresh. Fresh shades need anchors to act a backdrop to their dramatic impact. Established classics such black, bronze and navy blue show up in Benjamin Moore’s “Mysterious”, a rich deep blue black that belongs in the stable of trusted anchor colors in design, and in Hirshfield’s “Terra Pin”, a deep gray green. The inspiring and harmonious colors in both Hirshfield’s and Benjamin Moore’s 2022 Trend palettes reflect another major trend: a change in how we spend our time. We’re reconsidering how and where we work and focusing on our friends and families in new ways. Authenticity is at the forefront of our interactions online and in person. Colors that allow us to stay true to who we are and how we want to function in the world will continue to trend strongly. And colors that help us feel good, happy, strong and inspired will keep emerging as trends we will embrace.
