Happy 2022 Minneapolis Lakes community! We hope you enjoyed your holiday season. It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to be moving forward. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish, while other goals may be more community focused. Whatever yours are this year, know that the simple act of making and recognizing a goal or resolution is a great first step. The Minneapolis Lakes Team is jump starting January with a new look & fresh design. Although some sections may appear a bit different, our continued focus is to include more stories, adventures, and ways to connect you with local. This issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is an ongoing aspiration. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love.

A TOTAL TRANSFORMATION HELPING WOMEN HEAL THEMSELVES
After struggling for over 30 years with her weight and the issues that accompany that, Amy Heilman knew that she had to find a way to transform her body and her life. Through much research and training, she believes she found the answers she was seeking. And so, she set out to share this knowledge with others as a women’s health coach. “I became passionate about helping other women,” she says. “I can relate to what they’re going through. I’m walking the talk and I still go through my own challenges. I constantly tell women that to lead a life of transformation, to lead a life of growth and evolution, it means perpetually moving through struggle. It really requires a different approach to adversity and learning how to let adversity give us fuel rather than taking us down.” Three years ago, she developed her own signature program, HEAL (Habit Evolution to Awaken Your Life), to assist women with transforming their own lives. “I feel that over the course of time I discovered a proven process that helped me eliminate many of my health challenges, including losing excess weight and keeping it off,” says Amy. This process includes the 10 daily habits of Ayurveda and yoga. Ayurveda, she explains, is an ancient feminine wisdom of self-care practices that’s over 5000 years old. “What the yogis discovered thousands of years ago is that there are these 10 habits that help people do more with less effort,” she says. “They create adaptability, resilience, and vitality.” When women sign up for the three-month program, explains Amy, they learn about their anatomy and physiology so they can discover how to love and respect their bodies and break unhealthy patterns that are holding them back from creating the life and body
they want. They are able to take conscious control of their time and resources, and over the course of three months, they are also coached into getting deeper rest and gaining more energy and vitality. “The biggest key of all is that they are given a proven process,” says Amy. “It’s not a fad diet. It works.” Ayurveda also says that all disease stems from improper digestion, so there’s a great focus on digestion, she says. “It’s basically a system of balance that says what is outside of us is also within us - so earth, air, water, fire, ether – everything that makes up the planet is also what makes up a human being. We each have our own unique constitution made up of these elements and we can use that information to make healthy choices and thrive.” Throughout the program, participants are surrounded by a community of women who are all experiencing a similar journey and who have a shared goal. “It’s a community in which every woman is actively evolving and invested at a high level,” says Amy. “The women in the cohort back each other up and give each other support.” The next HEAL cohort, which takes place four times per year, begins in February. “The number of women varies, but I usually don’t take more than 10 people in a cohort so that I can give the best type of coaching and support,” she says. “It’s big enough that it feels abundant and small enough that it still feels intimate.” Amy says it’s important for her to continue sharing her knowledge because she spent so many years of her life suffering. “It was a very subtle suffering. I didn’t have a zest for life and was not feeling in control of my time, my resources, and my relationship with food. I was just letting life happen versus powerfully choosing and creating.” CONTINUED >

“My mission is to get this into the hands of more people so they will have the power to transform not only their own lives, but also transform their children’s lives, their partner’s lives and their friend’s lives. It is every person’s birthright to thrive in their body and unlock their deeper purpose.” In addition to the HEAL program, Amy also runs two detoxes each year. “I do a spring detox and a fall detox and that is also based upon the wisdom of Ayurveda.” Ayurveda is really based upon the laws of nature, she says, and she is now focusing on getting back to nature. After living in cities all her life, she and her husband, along with their cat, are moving into a tiny house in the woods in Northern Minnesota. “Earlier I was saying how I walk the talk, and I know for sure that I wasn’t ready to do this before I started implementing the habits of Ayurveda and yoga,” says Amy. “When I started to tune into my own natural biorhythms was when I noticed that city life was not supporting my new values, and over the course of the last year I was ready to make the shift to living more in harmony with nature.” “I want people to know that power moves like this are possible and there are ways to continue evolving to live in harmony with nature. That in itself, whether they’re in the city or the woods, will help create more rhythm in their life instead of stress and chaos. And that’s really the end goal.” To find out more about Amy and her programs, go to https://www.amyheilman.com/.

empower your health Dr. Jordan Shilts and Dr. Jaron Faber are passionate about the future of personalized healthcare. They are the co-founders of Statera Health, a modern health optimization center that launched in May of 2020. “Health is often thought of as the absence of disease. So when you go to the doctor and you don’t have a disease, often times there is confusion about how to address your symptoms. At Statera, our mission is to provide personalized solutions to identify and address the root cause of your dysfunction before it becomes disease.” says Dr. Shilts. Statera Health provides treatments from pain and complex illness to anti-aging and wellness. “Whenever someone walks through the doors with complaints of fatigue, digestive issues, brain fog, weight gain, or physical pain, we’re immediately thinking about how we can address and reduce this individual’s level of inflammation. Excess inflammation is now referred to as inflam-Aging because it is often the root of aging and disease”, says Dr. Faber.

STATERA PROVIDES OPTIMIZATION PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCY HAWTHORNE
“At Statera, our mission is to provide personalized solutions to identify and address the root cause of your dysfunction before it becomes disease.”
What sets Statera apart from traditional clinics, is their personalized approach of assessments and services. “What’s missing in today’s healthcare model is a true patient-doctor relationship. The art of what we do is understanding an individual’s physical, chemical, metabolic and emotional needs, and tailor the treatment plan to their goals and interests. We offer some really unique services that empower our patients to take control of their health like never before.”, says Dr. Shilts. CONTINUED >

This modern clinic features some of the most advanced health optimization technologies available today, such as Hyperbaric Oxygen, LED Light Therapy and Infrared Sauna. Combined with clinical services such as chiropractic, functional medicine, massage therapy and more, Statera has what you need to truly create optimal health. So what does it look like walking through the doors of Statera Health? “Typically we start with an on-boarding discovery appointment to familiarize our prospective patients with our services and discern whether or not we are a good fit for their unique health challenges.”, Dr. Jaron explains. “We then want to understand their health goals, take an in-depth health history, functional exam and finally send them out for comprehensive lab testing, if necessary. Often times the patient has never explored their health to this detail, providing them with answers and better clarity moving forward.”

“The analogy I love to give regarding functional medicine is if you picture a dying tree. The fastest way to make the leaves green is to paint them. It works 100% of the time, but only in the short-term because we are not addressing the root-cause. We have to give it sunlight, the proper soil, the right nutrients and provide it with water and care. Similarly, we guide each patient through our Pillars of Health, which are designed to address and optimize 5 foundational aspects of our health: Sleep, Nutrition, Mindset, Movement and Recovery. Entering the second year of the pandemic, Statera Health has placed an additional emphasis on individuals suffering from Long-Covid. “Data suggests around 15% of those infected with Covid go on to develop “Long Covid”, where symptoms such as sensory changes, brain fog and fatigue linger for months after the initial infection has passed. In these scenarios a heightened inflammatory burden gets placed on the body, which takes an enormous amount of energy to keep it at bay.
• Hyperbaric Oxygen: pressurized oxygen chamber that increases oxygen delivery and reduces inflammation. • LED Light Therapy: whole-body light therapy designed to increase blood flow, increase energy and decrease pain. • Infrared Sauna: heat-stress therapy that improves detoxification, cognitive performance and cardiovascular health. • Cellular Health Scans: quickly learn about your level of inflammation, body composition and hydration status. Whether your goal is anti-aging or chronic disease recovery, Statera Health has tailored memberships and advanced programs to achieve your health goals. Since 2002, Mathnasium has been helping children learn in an effective and fun way. The ability to master math skills can lead to higher levels of confidence, greater overall school satisfaction, and a variety of career opportunities. “I was a math major in college and spent 25 years in engineering,” says Bobby Tarnowski, a Mathnasium franchisee with 10 locations in the Twin Cities. “Over time, I realized I wanted to help kids get a better math education and came across Mathnasium.” He says he was really impressed with the franchise and felt the people involved had a great deal of passion for what they were doing. “They put together an outstanding curriculum. It makes math make sense to kids. We help them understand the math they’re doing and because they don’t just memorize it, their retention is much better and much longer lasting.” The Mathnasium Method™ is very pencil and paper based. “When they leave here, they know they’re smart, and it wasn’t a calculator or computer that solved the problem,” says Bobby. “They’ve worked it out and it’s impactful to their confidence to go through that process. When kids get that kind of confidence, you can see improvement in more than just their math class.” Due to the pandemic, students need these additional learning opportunities now more than ever. Many children weren’t in school during the worst of COVID, and math and other educational skills were sometimes not fully mastered. Parents can enroll their 1st through 12th graders in various packages. “Our standard program is a monthly tuition, and there are up to 10 lessons per month, 15 lessons a month, or a package for every day,” says Maddie Ernst, the center director of Lynnhurst Mathnasium. “Most families purchase a twice-aweek package.” All children are first given an assessment, and each one receives a custom learning plan that fits not only their level, but their learning style. Most students receive individual instruction in a group setting and instructors work with up to four students at a time, although private instruction is also available. They show them strategies, check their understanding, answer questions, and then set small goals so that they can learn to work independently on those specific topics. Mathnasium is also a fun place to learn, and there is a rewards system that inspires and delights. “Students get a stamp on a punch card whenever they complete a page,” says Maddie. “We have different prizes they can buy with their punch cards, such as lava lamps, speakers, and gift cards. They can also donate their cards to a charity.” When students get 100% on their mastery check, they get to ring a bell and have the other students clap for them. “Here, they don’t have to compare themselves to other students because they are with other kids who are in the same boat,” says Bobby. “They’re here figuring it out and having fun together and supporting one another. It’s a safe and secure environment for them.” CONTINUED >

In addition to in-person instruction, Bobby says about 15% of the students in his centers take virtual classes. This makes it easy for parents with busy schedules and for continued instruction while on vacation. In addition to its amazing curriculum and the fact that they only focus on math, Bobby and Maddie explain that another facet that makes Mathnasium stand out from other tutoring centers is their instructors. While potential hires have to be proficient in math and pass a math literacy exam, what they most look for are people who have the ability to be patient, have good energy with the students, and connect with them to make them feel comfortable. “Right now, one of our instructors is a licensed teacher, another is a retired business owner, and another is currently in college studying to be a math teacher,” says Maddie. Adds Bobby, “Our instructors are so invested in student’s doing well. They all have a great heart for kids, and that’s the biggest thing that draws people here. They want to be able to give back and make a difference for kids. And they can actually see the difference they’re making and it’s really fulfilling.”
28
F E AT U R E | ED U CATION
Right now, Bobby says they are actively looking for more instructors, so people who are interested in working part-time flexible hours should apply. Instructor Don Shuler has worked with Mathnasium since September of 2020. “I enjoy building up the kids’ confidence, helping them with the process, and showing them that they can do the work,” he says. “I’m a licensed teacher, but Mathnasium has a curriculum that’s easy to follow. It’s very heavily structured and sort of intuitive about how to deliver the material and use the teaching techniques that really do work.” Everyone in the centers works well together, says Bobby. “We really focus on the quality of what we do, from the instruction we give the kids to the attentiveness we give to the parents and the effort we put into working with their children’s teachers. We really try to deliver a high quality outcome.” For more information, go to https://www.mathnasium.com/ lynnhurst. 5315 Lyndale Ave S., Minneapolis. (763) 269-6969.

RESTORE YOUR SOUL WITH RHYTHM N’ BASS— AND YOGA MINNEAPOLIS’ FIRST BLACK-OWNED HIP HOP YOGA STUDIO CAN BE FOUND IN UPTOWN
32
LOCA L’S CH OICE | FITNE S S
Ten years ago, when Gabrielle Roberts attended her first yoga class, she walked away discouraged—feeling that she couldn’t connect to the instructor and did not feel the emotional revival the class had promised. Years later, after being reinspired to try yoga by finding an Instagram account of the first Black woman she had ever seen practicing yoga—Roberts saw herself in the woman. She has since set out with a drive to change stigmas, and proving that yoga can be a full body revival through hip hop. “I signed up for teacher training from seeing a girl on Instagram. She was the first black woman that I’ve ever seen do yoga,” Roberts said. “And I was like ‘Oh I want to be like her.’”
GABRIELLE ROBERTS
“Throughout training it was amazing, I completely turned a new leaf as a person. I felt so good. I started falling more in love with myself.” Roberts said. “I wanted to see a space like that, where other people like me can have the opportunity to experience what I experienced.” Roberts now owns Minneapolis’ first and only hip-hop yoga studio, 612 Jungle. 612 Jungle is also the only black-owned studio in Minnesota. It was first established in 2018, with a mission of inviting people to let loose and feel their body while grooving to hip hop jams, but the class is still grounded in foundational yoga techniques. The origin of the studio’s name, 612 Jungle, was an easy equation. When planning a getaway retreat, Roberts’ first intuition is to go someplace tropical— thus to Roberts, the jungle is associated with relaxation and adventure— what the studio was destined to be. Seven different formats of classes are offered at 612 Jungle, all of which have the option of either in-person or virtual attendance. Beginner classes focus on yoga’s sun salutation positions and harder class sessions bring on the sweat and dance beats. The studio’s music choices are what make the space unique and upbeat, which is the style Roberts prefers when practicing yoga. “Sometimes calming music gives me more anxiety,” Roberts said. Through conversations between friends, she found that a common theme was that yoga can be more fun when experienced with fast-paced music. Roberts trained under Vinyasa Yoga and has completed a 200-hour Yoga Certification. “I was trained in a free-flow style that is very different, look at it as a radical yogi— breaking all the rules, loud music, bass bumping. The heat is up.” The studio’s instructors encouraged class attendees to let out their individuality and embrace the freedom and vibe of the session. Roberts wanted to bring her version to the community. “The music is there to intentionally drive people,” Roberts said. “One thing that connects people no matter where you are, is music.” Most of the studio’s classes can be heard playing hip hop or rap, meanwhile, slower-paced classes incorporate the genre of rhythm n’ bass. When it comes to the studio’s most popular classes, Roberts suggests that someone more familiar with yoga try a session of “TRAPPINhard” and beginners can start with “TRAPPINlite.” An instructor walks the class through one routine a few times to help the group get the hang of the movements before cranking up the music. “It’s all about the breath. The beats are there to push you, encourage you to keep going, and give you something to connect to. The free flow nature is about letting go of the aesthetic and focusing on how it feels for their body. Everybody’s body is different and we celebrate that here,” Roberts said. A slower-paced class, “SOULIT,” is accompanied by a rhythm n’ bass playlist— featuring artists such as Alicia Keys and Beyoncé. The biggest difference between this class and others at the studio is that the group is told to close their eyes the entire class. “It’s really cool to shift your focus inward and not be worried about what someone looks like next to you,” Roberts said. Roberts also wanted to accommodate those who may not be as inclined toward the free flow style of a yoga class. “Hustle + Flow” is the studio’s class that includes the most instructor guidance. The 612 crew vary in yoga style preferences and personalities— all part of Roberts’ plan to make the studio inclusive and welcoming to all. “I really set out to create a space that was affordable, accessible, and relatable to my community,” Roberts said. Most instructors were hired on through Roberts’ teacher training course held at 612 Jungle. Two training sessions are held each year (spring and fall), where trainees can complete a 200 Hour Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training program incorporating vinyasa and yin to become Yoga Alliance certified. The studio has built a like-minded community of free-flow yogis in Minneapolis’ Uptown area, but that isn’t the end of it. Robert’s goal for the studio is to see it expand in the Twin Cities and eventually franchise—“creating this Jungle-esque vibe in every city and area code that I can,” Roberts said. M EX ICA N LENTIL A ND SQUASH SOU P
A PERFECT DISH TO WARM YOUR FAMILY DURING A COLD MINNESOTA WINTER 38
C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE
RECIPE ingredients:
directions:
• 1C lentils, green, rinsed • 1½ C red onion, chopped • 6 cloves garlic, minced • 1½ C carrots, chopped • 3C delicata squash, ¼ moons • 28oz canned tomatoes • 4C chicken stock • 1 bundle swiss chard or kale, de stemmed and chopped • 1Tsp cumin, ground • 1Tsp smoked paprika • Chipotle peppers in adobo • 2Tbsp olive oil • Salt and pepper
1. Blend together tomatoes with 3 tbsp of just adobo sauce from the chipotle can, plus 1-3 chipotle peppers, depending on how spicy you would like the soup to be. Clean the tomato can out with 1C chicken stock and blend it in.
optional toppings: • Avocado • Greek yogurt • Pumpkin seeds, roasted • Radishes • Cilantro • Lime
2. Heat olive oil in a stock pan over medium heat. Add onions, ½ tsp salt, and saute for 3 minutes. Add carrots and saute for another 5 minutes. Add in garlic, smoked paprika, cumin, black pepper and cook for another 30 seconds. 3. Deglaze the pan with the blended chipotle and tomatoes. I clean the blender out with the remaining 3C of chicken stock before adding it in. I never like to waste anything! 4. Add in squash, lentils and ½ tsp salt. Cover and simmer for 30-45 minutes over medium-low heat, until the lentils and squash are fully cooked. Stir in swiss chard a couple minutes before serving so it keeps its vibrant green color and only wilts slightly. Check for seasoning. 5. Serve with the toppings of your choice! The Cold Plunge
Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 42
S ELF CA R E | FITNESS
Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
