The Dog Days of Summer I’VE ALWAYS WONDERED ABOUT THIS REFERENCE, SO FINALLY LOOKED IT UP! The Dog Days of Summer refers to the Sun occupying the same region of the sky as Sirius, the brightest star visible from any part of Earth and part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater “dog”. These days run from the beginning of July through mid-August.

Here at Minneapolis Lakes, these hot summer days belong to our Kids and Pets issue. This month our team spoke with Her Next Play, a non-profit organization helping develop the next generation of women leaders through sports. Her Next Play offers programs designed to help meet goals and dreams while using the determination, structure and discipline that comes with participating in athletics. Along the same lines, we spoke with Brad McLemore, owner of House of Music. Brad and his dedicated staff help children and adults learn instruments while developing a deeper love of music. We met with Ralph and Abbe Bernstein, owners of Downtown Dogs and Dogs Day Out about their new philanthropic endeavor called “Change Unleashed,” an ongoing round up program that will be matched and given to a new non-profit every quarter.

DEVELOPING THE NEXT GENERATION OF WOMEN LEADERS THROUGH SPORTS

Minneapolis Lakes | August 2021

WHAT ARE THE CORE VALUES OR MISSION OF HER NEXT PLAY? At Her Next Play, our mission is to develop the next generation of women leaders through sports. Our Play Bold programs provide girls the opportunity to play sports, stay active, and develop as leaders through our innovative Play Bold leadership curriculum. We work with teams through our Bold Together program, partner with schools and parks programs on Summer Sports and Leadership Camps, and host day long Sports Summits to inspire girls to stay in sports. We’re pushing to give girls and young women equal opportunities in sports and leadership so they can become the next generation of women leaders in our communities. We also work with college athletes and former athletes as part of our Career Accelerator Network, where we’re building a community of women athletes focused on leadership and career success. launching the Rookie Career Accelerator, a new program designed to spark early career acceleration for women athletes. Through innovative retreats, monthly learning labs, access to mentors, and interactive development experiences, the Rookie Career Accelerator provides a one of a kind career building experience that supports women athletes in the early years of their career. In just two years, Her Next Play has served more than 1,500 girls and women through 20 newly developed programs, and we’ve been recognized as an Aspen Institute Project Play Champion.

HOW DO YOU THINK SPORTS SUPPORT FUNDAMENTALS IN A YOUNG PERSON’S DEVELOPMENT? Playing sports provides so many opportunities to learn powerful leadership and career readiness skills. Playing helps girls learn skills like coachability, performance under pressure, resilience, teamwork, grit, and confidence. We know these skills translate into career success, as 94% of women executives played sports, and 52% of women in c-suite positions played sports at the college level. Girls don’t need to be on the top team, or in a travel league to develop these skills - it’s the process of competing at any level that provides the opportunity to develop as a leader.

Playing sports provides so many opportunities

HOW CAN READERSHIP GET INVOLVED OR HELP? Visit us at www.hernextplay.org for upcoming events and programs. Her Next Play relies heavily on community support and volunteers. Community members can join our Booster Club as a donor or volunteer, and we’re always looking for volunteers to help with events, projects, and new programs.

CHANGE FOR ANIMALS

BERNSTEIN,

OWNER

OF

DOWNTOWN DOGS AND DOG’S DAY OUT, AND WIFE ABBE, ARE ARDENT SUPPORTERS OF MANY RESCUE, FOSTER AND OTHER ANIMAL-RELATED ORGANIZATIONS IN THE TWIN CITIES. One of the things they’ve done for many years is offer free or heavily discounted boarding for dogs who are without foster homes. Now, they are hoping to do much more. “We wanted to find a way to also support these organizations financially and to raise our customers’ awareness of them at the same time,” says Ralph. So, they came up with Change Unleashed, an ongoing round-up program. “When people pick up their dog from daycare, boarding or grooming, we’ll ask if they want to round up their bill to the nearest dollar,” he says. “Each quarter, we will match that money (up to $1,500 to start) and donate it to one of the organizations we want to support.” The first one chosen is Mission Animal Hospital in Eden Prairie, a large full-service 501(c)(3) nonprofit veterinary practice. Dr. Susan Miller, the veterinarian who founded it, has a goal to serve as broad a community as possible. It has a sliding-scale fee structure based on the ability to pay, says Ralph, but people without financial hardships also take their pets there due to its outstanding services.

“They have a full surgical suite and dental service, plus a super-cool full mobile veterinary clinic that is completely fitted out.”

Every quarter, another animal welfare organization will be chosen to receive the funds from Change Unleashed. “This program was really Abbe’s idea,” says Ralph. “She

Since then, Ralph jokingly says his wardrobe budget has gone way down. Instead of suits and ties, he wears jeans and a polo shirt every day, and so enjoys what he does. Downtown Dogs has an incredible 18,000 square feet of space and four playrooms, and there is at least one dog handler in each room to make sure all the dogs are getting along and playing safely.

“Dogs are separated not by size like many other facilities, but by temperament and play style. For instance, Abbe and I have three dogs, and two of them are essentially the same size. But Frannie, the 10-year-old Pug, just wants to sleep all day, and Lyle, the 2-year-old Wire Fox Terrier, wants to play all day. Putting them in the same playroom just wouldn’t make sense.” And for dogs who aren’t comfortable being around other dogs, they can stay in their suites or oversized kennels and can be taken out to the exercise and potty yards on their own. “We have a blind hound mix, Helen, who is very skittish around strange dogs. So when she comes here she has her own room.” One of the things he and his staff, who are naturally all dog lovers, pride themselves on is knowing all of the dogs’ names. “At the end of the day, what most dog parents want is their dog to be happy and very tired. These are people’s children, and they expect us to make sure they are well cared for and loved.”

His staff of 25 not only makes sure the dogs are engaged and having fun, but they also keep the place extremely clean and sanitary. SIMPLE, THREE INGREDIENT CAT TREATS. Homemade cat treats are a fun way to show your cats how much you love them! This easy salmon cat treat recipe will be a hit with your cat babies. Get a fun shaped cookie cutter like a small fish shape to make them even more fun for your feline friend!

INGREDIENTS + 10 ounces canned salmon undrained + 1 egg beaten + 2 cups whole wheat flour

DIRECTIONS 01 Preheat oven to 350°. 02 Pulse 10 ounces of undrained, canned salmon in a food processor to chop as finely as possible. 03 In a stand mixer, combine salmon, 1 egg (beaten), and 2 cups whole wheat flour until dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add up to 1/3 cup water. If it’s is too wet or sticky, add a bit more flour. The dough should be tacky but not sticky. 04 Roll dough on a floured surface until about 1/4-inch thick. Use a 3/4inch cookie cutter in the shape of your choice to create your treats. 05 Place treats on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 350° for about 20 minutes. When they’re slightly browned and crunchy, they’re done. 06 Allow to cool before serving. 07 Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.
