has so much to offer. It seems that with every approaching new year, there is an element of change in the air. We sat down with Tami Willett, the new General Manager at Luther Westside VW to talk about her goals, female leadership in automotive, and a bit about the new Volkswagen electric ID4. We also touched base with Minneapolis Health Clinic on some of their unique programs and how you can expect one on one care with minimal time contraints. And, if you are looking for some new educational options in the Twin Cities, The International School of Minnesota has a great curriculum and openings for children in several grade levels. Finally, Kowalski's sheds light on their company focus and the importance of quality food when bringing people together.

You’ll also find tasty maple syrups, wild berry syrups, and wild berry jellies, plus a variety of teas and even multicolored organic popcorn. The kernels are all different colors but it still pops white. Another unique offering is Greg’s family recipe for fry bread that has been turned into a complete dry bread mix. So, what exactly is fry bread? “The history of fry bread comes out of the treaties that the tribes made with the U.S. government. In the agreement to move from a nomadic society to an agrarian society the government would provide food staples during the transition. One of the

staples were the ingredients for making bread. The only problem was none of the northern tribes used baking as a method of cooking. Being creative, we took the ingredients along with the lard and fried it. You can put powdered sugar, honey, or my favorite – butter. But, you’ll find different variations of this fried bread between the tribes in the U.S.” Some new food items this year include a whole line of smoked seasonings and smoked salts, and interesting dips and jams. Greg searches out small local food suppliers that have very special and unique products that shoppers are not going to find in big box stores. “Also, we buy from local artists and local businesses, which helps the local economy,” he says. “When you buy local art from us, you’re buying from Native artists who are from this area and surrounding areas. You’re not buying something that is made in Taiwan or made in China. You’re buying from an Ojibwe artist in Northern Minnesota or a Crow artist out west, or a Cree artist right across the border in Canada. So, you’re supporting local artists who are actually making things to support themselves and their families.” Another positive aspect of shopping local is being able to hear the stories behind the products. This makes a purchase so much more meaningful and Greg loves to share these tales. The design of the store also lends itself to an extremely pleasant shopping experience. Its walls are made of beautiful river stone, the ceilings are crisscrossed with rough-hewn timbers, and the floors are wood plank. The whole design embodies nature and serenity. Lately, there’s been a lot of talk and concern about the availability of merchandise coming from overseas and it not being available in time for the holidays. Since Greg gathers all his merchandise from local producers, he’s not worried. “There’s plenty in stock and our store is big enough so that there is plenty of room for people to walk around,” says Greg. However, if customers cannot visit Northland Visions in person, he has quite a bit of merchandise displayed online and every item is able to be shipped across the country. To view its wonderful offerings, go to https://northlandvisions.com/. 861 E. Hennepin, Minneapolis located in the Miller Textile building. (612) 872-0390.

And if your family prefers roast beef, they will love our exclusive Akaushi beef, a premium brand of Kobe-style beef typically only available at high-end steakhouses. “But no food is so crucial to family get-togethers as dessert. I laugh when I tell people how much time we spend just fine-tuning our pumpkin pie crust. Each and every cookie, from spritz to chocolate chip, is made from scratch in our bakery. Our baked goods haven’t got quite the same shelf life as other retailers’, but we don’t use preservatives at home, so we don’t use them at Kowalski’s either. “We’re happy to admit when another local vendor is able to make something even more exceptional than we can. It’s also exciting to partner with nearby small businesses like Salsa Lisa, Velvet Bees Honey Butter, Bistro Meringues, and Patti’s Roasted Nuts to help them grow. It wasn’t very long ago that Mary Anne and Kris were first starting out, and they’re eager to give the same kind of community support that they owe their success to.”

“Patients should have an appointment that doesn’t feel rushed,” Dr.Totoe said. “Patients can sometimes feel rushed during their appointment when they have a short amount of time with the physician.” Community care is at the center of the clinic’s practice—making sure to take care of its neighbors even beyond usual health needs. Part of this belief has come to fruition through being able to perform Green Card Medical exams and Immigration Immunizations for USCIS. The clinic also performs pre-employment physicals to new job seekers for the city of Plymouth, evaluate disability patients applying for social security disability and has been active with community COVID-19 vaccination and testing. Authorization to administer COVID-19 vaccines, has as well enabled the clinic more power to help the community. “We are in partnership with MN department of health and able to administer all three vaccine types,” Dr. Totoe said. “Patients have access to Pfizer-BioNtech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccination options. We will be also be able to vaccinate the 5 to 11 year olds when the vaccine is approved by CDC. Lastly we go to the community to do vaccines, and we have a vaccine clinic coming up with the Hennepin Middle School.” The clinic’s resources and trusted reputation has also led the practice to countless growth opportunities.

She has been in the automotive industry for 22 years, and will start her 12th year with Luther Westside in January. “Steve has worked for Luther Automotive Group for 38 years and has been at Westside since 2002, and he has created what Westside is today,” she says. “We are the number one Volkswagen dealer in the Midwest.” Since Tami says there’s nothing to fix, her plans for the future include putting her own personal spin and energy into the dealership, and to keep up with the changing times. “I want to make it fun,” she says. Tami feels fortunate to be overseeing a great team of people. “We have 20 sales people – eight of them have been here for 10 plus years. My senior female new car sales person has been here over 20 years. So, when people come in, they see a lot of familiar faces all the way from the front of the house to the back of the house.

“We also have lot of repeat customers and a lot of referrals,” she adds. “Our retention in the service department is over 77%. So, 77% of customers who buy a car here service their car here. We always say that sales sells the first car and service sells every car after.” So, it’s extremely important to treat the customer right beyond just the first-time sale. What she would really like to see is more women on her team and in the industry. “I’m definitely in a male-dominated industry,” she says. “I think most females believe that in order to do this job, you have to know how cars work and be mechanical, but at the end of the day, it’s really a service business. I would love to welcome more women and inspire more women to be curious and ask about it. If they are people-people, this could be the industry for them.” Out of the 20 sales people on her team, only three are females. And of the 14 managers, there are no women at all. “From the minute I come to work, I’m engaged with people, whether it’s my employees, my managers, my sales people, or my customers,” says Tami. “I love to serve people, and from the minute I’m here I’m either serving my team or I’m serving the customer.” She also loves representing the German-built Volkswagen. “If you were to ask the average consumer what the number one brand of vehicle sold worldwide is, 9 out of 10 are going to say Toyota or Honda. But, worldwide, Volkswagen sells more cars than each of them.” The Tiguan is the number one selling vehicle at Luther Westside. The Atlas, which is a fullsized SUV with a third seat, has really taken off as well, she says. The dealership is also accepting reservations for its first fully-electric crossover SUV, and has become a special “Lighthouse” dealership for Volkswagen. It’s the first Mid-West facility to have this designation.

“We went through a big remodel for the ID.4 and we have 126 all-wheel drives reserved right now,” she says. “And we have also already sold rear-wheel drives.” The dealership has plenty of charging stations, and many retail establishments in the area, such as Target and Home Depot, have charging stations available as well, she adds. “When you look at what you get for the money with the ID.4, we are going to give Tesla a run for its money,” says Tami. “Right now in Chattanooga, Tennessee, they are adding a production line for the ID.4 and stating that in 2023, Volkswagen will start producing the ID.4 right there in the U.S. whereas normally, the ID.4 comes from Germany.” Like most dealerships around the county, inventory is somewhat lean. “But, we are still the number one volume Volkswagen dealer in the Mid-West,” she says. “We have a better inventory situation than most, and we have good incoming stock.” Working for the family-owned-and-operated Luther Automotive Group is something in which Tami’s also grateful. “David Luther has 37 dealerships and what I love about working for David is he lets us all work independently. We’re not cookie cutter and we don’t have that sterile corporate feel. We each get to manage our business like it’s our own and create our own story, but yet we still have his core values of how to do business.” For more on what Luther Westside Volkswagen offers, or if you’re interested in finding your career at its dealership, go to https:// www.westsidevw.com/. 2370 MN-100, St Louis Park, MN 55416. GIVING BACK
Gratefully
ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy

a grateful one
When you put as much food on as many holiday tables as we do, you learn a thing or two about giving thanks. So we’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you – for shopping here, for working here, for growing and making great products and selling them here. Thank you.
Thank you for your time and dedication to quality and service. Thank you for your passion, knowledge and

expertise. Thank you for your friendship and loyalty. Thank you for every email and call, for every like and share. For each and every way you’ve been a part of Kowalski’s this year, we thank you most sincerely. It is an honor to be your grocers at this time of year and all year long.
May your holiday season be full of happiness, kindness and, most of all, the joy of good food.
