Reflecting This Season NOVEMBER MEANS WE ARE COMING INTO THE HOLIDAYS ONCE AGAIN, AND HOPEFULLY THIS SEASON WILL BRING YOU PEACE AND JOY. This year will very likely be quite different to many due to COVID-19. For me personally, it is a time of reflection and giving thanks for what I am most grateful for. But, this partic-

ular time of year changed radically for me in 2019, and will forever be a bittersweet milestone in my life. It is the anniversary of Minneapolis Lakes, but it is also the anniversary of my Father’s passing. Now, and every year forward will definitely be one of gratitude and remembrance for me; keeping friends and family close while celebrating life and all of its ups and downs. In this issue, our team spoke with Quenton Marty, President of MATTER, a non-profit located in St. Louis Park. Quenton and I had the chance to meet years ago when I took a tour of their organization and was excited to learn about the good they do both locally and globally. It gives me great joy to be able to feature them in this issue. We also spoke with the team at RGW Wealth Management and learned what to look for when assessing future asset allocation and how it pays to partner with investors who can plan with a tax-smart strategy.

“We had thousands of masks in our warehouse when all of this hit, along with gowns, gloves, hand sanitizer, and other personal protective equipment (PPE) that was suddenly needed, “ Marty explained. “Within a couple of weeks, we distributed all those masks and the PPE to local hospitals. It was an unusual time for us. We usually take in excess supplies and repurpose to others who need it. But here we were, helping right here in the Minneapolis community during a crisis. It gave our organization a strong sense of purpose during a difficult time.” Marty, a married father of four, began his journey as a divinity student out of high school, which was followed by six years as an associate pastor at a small suburban church. His path led him to an interest in microfinance and using it to help others. He has lived in places as diverse as Ukraine and Poland to Lancaster County, Pa. The next adventure for his family will be a move to Zimbabwe where Marty will oversee a nation-wide MATTER initiative to renovate key hospitals and establish nutrition gardens in partnership with Zimbabwe’s First Lady and her foundation, Angel of Hope. “When we talk to our partners in Africa, the economic slowdown has created a lot of hand-to-mouth type of situations,” he said. “People are working day-to-day to provide for their families and put food on the table. There is a rise in malnutrition and, in some cases, starvation. At the same time, in many of these countries the health care systems are in such need that even the most basic care is hard to come by. People deserve dignified health care. MATTER is excited to help Zimbabwe restore its health care infrastructure so they can better address the needs of their people.” Marty encourages the public to partner with MATTER in making the world, from home to abroad, a better place. “MATTER’s guiding belief is encapsulated in the simple yet powerful expression, YOU MATTER,“ Marty explained. “When people believe they matter, and believe others matter too, their ideas and actions can change the world. We have numerous opportunities for people to give back, help others and serve. By working together, we can help meet the growing needs here in the Twin Cities and beyond.” To learn more, visit www.matter.ngo 16

“START PLANNING EARLY AND LOOKING AT FINANCIAL GOALS,” SAYS BEN. “IF YOU WAIT, YOU MAY HAVE BEEN MAKING THE WRONG DECISIONS ALL ALONG.”

Lyle says that they have a weekly online meeting with other advisors to discuss different strategies and different products and to find out what’s available and what’s right for clients, so they’re learning from each other. “Understanding what’s out there is huge and not trying to do everything yourself is important,” says Lyle. “There are people out there who have good ideas.” Keeping up with technology is also necessary in the financial business. “The technology has improved tremendously,” says Lyle. “All the accounts get updated automatically, and clients have access to their plans whenever they want to look at them.” Their broker dealer is Avantax Investment Services, which among other things, creates software to assist financial advisors with decision making for their clients. These products, which can actually tap into clients’ accounts, can also give recommendations for tax-smart investing. When drawing up a financial plan, there is one key piece of advice Lyle and Ben would give their clients. “The main thing is to put your plan together so you can make the right decisions as you go,” says Lyle. “Not knowing how those decisions affect your plan is huge. If you don’t have a plan in place, you really don’t have the information to make the right decision.” “Start planning early and looking at financial goals,” says Ben. “If you wait, you may have been making the wrong decisions all along.” To find out more about RGW Wealth Management, go to https://www.rgwwealth.com. “Securities offered through Avantax Investment ServicesSM, Member FINRA, SIPC. Chardonnay, Viognier, Gewürztraminer and Rhône White Blends pair delightfully with many of the dishes found on the Thanksgiving table. For example, pumpkin soup or butternut squash with brown butter and sage is a delicious match for a richly textured Chardonnay. The warmer spices of autumn, like nutmeg, cinnamon and clove, are complementary to this style of wine, as many have similar notes interwoven with toasted oak nuances.

REDS Pinot Noir, Beaujolais and lighter bodied Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley make excellent companions to the savory, herb-inflected dishes at a typical Thanksgiving feast. The elevated acidity, as well as the nuances of mushroom and dried herbs, make these wines stellar accompaniments, keeping your palate refreshed while elevating the complementary notes found in the food.

ROSÉS In years past, most people wouldn’t think to pull out their favorite rosé to

LAMBRUSCO + MOM’S SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE

pair with Thanksgiving dinner, but it’s actually a fantastic wine to have handy this time of year. Fuller-bodied rosé made with Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Franc are excellent matches for the richer foods that make their way to the holiday table, the juicy acidity keeping your palate from becoming tired and overwhelmed from all the sumptuous dishes.
