EMMY-AWARD-WINNING HOST, PRODUCER, AND CREATOR OF LIVING AND AGING WITH PRIDE SHOWS US WHAT LIVING WITH STYLE REALLY MEANS

Dear Neighbors,
While curating this inspiring issue, I couldn't help to contemplate what makes style so important. It caused me to consider my own style; why I wear what I do, why I’ve styled my house a certain way and continue to color my hair, year after year.

Style is our ethos. It informs our decisions and helps us feel connected to ourselves. Style gives us confidence, joy and a sense of identity with our values. Style shares what’s important to us; It’s how we express ourselves. For some, your style is refreshed on a continual basis: You might reach for colored golf attire, another shade of a blue button up, or stick with the ever flattering all black everything. Or perhaps you're one to wear the same outdoor collection you bought at REI when your oldest started kindergarten. Nothing wrong with any of this as long as you feel alive and empowered with your daily vibe.
We’ve decided to take you on a little road trip through the many faces of style. We start with the Emmy Award winning TV Host and producer of Living and Aging with Pride, James Brown. A conversation with him, will leave you feeling his vibrancy for life and mission. James seeks to inspire seniors to live their best life through his weekly show on AMGTV, available on Roku and Prime Video every Sunday morning. If you’re lucky enough to have parents still alive, have them tune into his show and see the inspiring issues he puts together every week.
Next we move to hair. Style and hair go hand in hand. If you’re feeling something missing or perhaps a little blah, we have a treat for you. Raven Feurer is ready to hold space. Time in her chair will uplift you and possibly help you let go of limiting beliefs and claim that version of you wanting to emerge. It’s more than an appointment, call her and find out.
We also wanted to inspire style in our homes as it’s where everything beautiful starts. When you feel comfortable in your home, you’re inspired. You live more fully. You have more time for all the other things that matter.
From outdoor to indoor, life is what we make of it. Style is a mindset, sometimes a new pair of shoes is all the boost you need to go from 5 to 10.

MERGING STYLE WITH DEEP HEALING, RAVEN FEURER, TRANSFORMING CLIENTS FROM THE INSIDE OUT.

"Transformation is much more than skin deep. It encompasses mind, soul, and body.” These are the reverberating words of Raven Feurer— the life force, owner, and visionary behind the three-time award-winning salon, 5D Salon and Sound Space.
One step inside and you know exactly what she’s talking about. As a stylist who didn’t want to “just do hair,” but "truly help people become their best selves from the inside out,” Raven has done just that.
From crystal-infused hair products to the porcelain washbowls and symbolic hummingbird mural, the air is filled with nurturing vibes enhanced by soothing music and aromatherapy—all to support your deepest healing and elevation.
Why? Because Raven’s mission expands far beyond giving you a fresh look.
"We explore what version of yourself you want to be," she explains, "and then we help you look and FEEL that way.”
Recently invited to New York Fashion Week, she and her team of holistic stylists are onto something.
It all began 25 years ago. After graduating, Raven discovered what her clients needed was much deeper than a cut and color.
“I was a young person and these women would unload on me the challenges of their life and what it's like to be them, and I honestly had no tools to support anything other than, ‘Do you want bangs or not?’”
But these would be the very interactions that would eventually catalyze her own introspection and spiritual journey.
“I went to Peru to Costa Rica. I started learning about sound, meditation, yoga… and that allowed me to have more space.”

When she returned, she brought with her healing modalities and a deep desire to serve the community on a more profound level.
Now clients shed old patterns, embrace their authentic selves, and step into the boundless potential of who they can become.
Some of these processes include chopping off hair with her blessed scissors from Peru to release old chapters. Other times it’s saging with Palo Santo, but always about getting to the bottom of how the client wants to look and feel and WHY.
If any deeper healing is needed, clients are invited to return for an inner-work session in the 5D Sound Space adjacent to the salon—in a safe environment that restores the nervous system. The sessions include breathwork, sound therapy (now backed by science), and restorative yoga.
But the commitment to growth and holistic well-being doesn’t stop there. It’s extended to the stylists, who are not only skilled hair technicians but compassionate listeners trained to hold space for their clients' emotional journeys. And for Raven, it’s non-negotiable that her stylists are fully supported in their own self-development and financial success.
When reflecting on the major client breakthroughs and life changes the salon has witnessed, Raven says "I just feel like it’s a privilege and honor to be part of their journey, and they trust me.”
As far as style is concerned, she’s serving, “sophistication with a rebellious flair”–attracting clients who seek more than just a new look.

EMMY-AWARD-WINNING HOST, PRODUCER, AND CREATOR OF LIVING AND AGING WITH PRIDE SHOWS US WHAT LIVING WITH STYLE REALLY MEANS

Meet James Brown—the undeniably cool native San Franciscan (who’s made Utah home for over 30 years)—he doesn’t just bring the style, he IS the style.
Rising by 7 AM each morning, at 78 years young, James springs out of bed with child-like enthusiasm and anticipation for what he’ll discover that day. But most of all, he wakes up on a mission—to make the world a better place and spread more love.
“THE
Giving that extra touch of finesse, James shaves and trims his mustache before Zoom calls, coordinates his shirt color with his socks, wears pinstriped trousers (even when no one can see them on camera), and presses all of his clothes.
“I do these things because I understand that when you do those things, people recognize and identify with you because they understand that it took some effort… People pay attention to your neatness.”
James now measures his time by the “effects of the effort I put into making a difference,” and does so with style and intentionality. Because to him, “The things you do to take care of yourself, whether it's putting on clean socks or cleaning up your shoes, transfers into your lifestyle and into your brain.”
This is why his morning routine includes dressing to impress and setting himself on the right foot, literally.
“I shine my shoes to this day,” says James. “I had an older gentleman look down, and he said, ‘You shine your shoes. I haven't seen anybody do that in a hundred years.’ But those are the things I learned when I was a young man that people notice.”
It’s the finer details James prides himself on that make him a real showstopper—not to mention his infectious grin and larger-than-life personality.
When asking James how he would categorize his style, he says matterof-factly, “My style has been original, and I don't find another guy dressing like I dress.”
And original he is—a self-described “contemporary man,” James keeps up with everything from politics to the latest technology; he has his own podcast, a television show, and countless creative projects on the horizon. After any tidbit of conversation with him, it’s clear this is only the beginning.
That said, he’s already led the kind of life most only dream about, adding another notch to his coolness. He’s tied to famous musicians of the '60s, having been the coordinator for Sly and the Family Stone, hosting a blues radio station, and being the first black male to report for ABC 4 Utah—and this is only touching the surface.

But even with his unique background, having grown up around artists like Carlos Santana among others in the Bay Area—of which he says, “All of these guys were in the hood, but we paid no attention to it, so it was one wonderful place,”—it paled in comparison to his parents’ legacy.
His mother and father left the biggest impression on him. James calls them “beacons of light.” He fondly remembers his mother cooking mounds of food and inviting people from all walks of life into their home to eat—regardless of where they were from or their orientation.
Continuing his commitment to embracing people of all kinds, James is on a mission to serve the aging population of Utah and beyond. He’s been providing awareness, resources, and support via his television series, Living and Aging with Pride
In fact, he was recently humbled to receive the 2024 Rocky Mountain Southwest Emmy Award for this very program he’s been pouring his heart and soul into.
“I STILL SHINE MY SHOES TO THIS DAY.”
When speaking about his initiatives with the aging population, he says, “I think it's understanding the value of age. Some people don't understand the value of age because their culture or family doesn’t recognize age as a value. It [age] brings wisdom, knowledge, and experience. And what are the key factors in helping you have a better life? Wisdom, knowledge, and experience.”
Offering his own wisdom, James says, “I believe that in order for us to be better and do better, we have to embrace loving ourselves and loving our community. Otherwise, you sit in a corner and do nothing. If you love something, you cultivate it, you stimulate it, and you vibrate with it.”
James shows us that style is about so much more than how we look—it’s about being a better person to everyone. And for him, making Livingwithpride.org one of the most useful resources for older adults in the world— “sharing love, giving love.”

From disillusioned banker to enchanted interior designer—how Ashley Ostrander answered her soul’s calling, turning a childhood dream into reality

A veritable interior design virtuoso, you’d never believe that over a handful of years ago Ashley Ostrander was slugging it out in the finance industry, living each day with a sinking feeling in her gut, a knowing that she was meant for something more, something greater.
“I never felt fully fulfilled. I always felt like there's got to be more to my life. This isn't what I'm passionate about… I'm wasting a lot of the precious time that I have here on earth,” explains Ashley.
While she had a burning desire since she was a little girl to have a career in style and design, (she used to regularly redecorate her room with her mom’s rotated stash of decor under the stairway), she never felt like that was a viable option for her. At least, she had no role models paving the way for a creative career. After all, her hardworking, single mom forewent her own dreams to support the family. For Ashley, practicality just seemed to be par for the course.
By the time Ashley graduated, the economy was still looking grim—if she were to take risks in her life, 2010 was decidedly not the time. Thus, that one wild hair she got about opening a clothing boutique after college was squashed. Like many of us do, she chose the “safe” route, a career in finance.
Unhappy year after year in her safe bet, Ashley desperately sought another option that might be slightly less painful, so she became a radiology tech. But she quickly learned, as Ashley puts it, that working in a hospital isn’t for the faint of heart. Before she could blink, she was back to the old hat—finance.

“When you have a passion and a calling that’s unshakable, there’s nothing that you can do to fill that void.”
And that nagging voice of her true life calling—the one that Mary Oliver talks about when she speaks of “your one wild and precious life”—would keep on calling her. There was no outrunning or hiding from it. In fact, it only intensified.
Until Ashley met her breaking point. One day while toiling in her golden handcuffs, she found herself utterly spent—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. She knew she couldn’t do this anymore. Never in her life had she left a job without a backup plan, but this time was different—there was no other option. She made one phone call to her husband, who happened to surprise her with his overwhelming support, and she never looked back.
That’s the moment she gave herself permission to leap. She’d start from the bottom, saying goodbye to her cushy paycheck and benefits and work at a furniture store as an entrylevel interior designer—which she is so glad they took a chance on her. Only two years later, she’d be working for the number one home builder in Utah.
Once she stepped out and stopped “playing it safe,” her whole world opened up. As it turns out, that dream as a little girl was what she was missing all along.
A few years later, Authentic Design Studio was born—her full-service luxury interior design company.
“You are capable and you can make it happen, you just gotta be willing to put in the work and sacrifice!”
The cornerstone of her style is creating a home that tells each person's authentic story and breaks “cookie-cutter” interiors. “How beautiful would it be to walk into every person's home in your neighborhood, and it feels like a true representation of who they are!” she exclaims.
In essence, she doesn’t care what your neighbors think and says you shouldn’t either.
“When you have a passion, and when you have a calling, that's unshakeable. There's nothing that you can do to fill that void,” Ashley has discovered.
While the first months of business were full of uncertainty, she went “all in” and everything grew organically.
Now Ashley’s passion and talent speak for themselves, as a highly sought-after home designer.
Just as in life, Ashley sets herself apart in the industry as someone unwilling to take no for an answer. Ashley says, “If there's not a clear path, I like to forge my own,” and she takes that same attitude to your interior. If your contractor or electrician says something isn’t possible, Ashley is renowned for finding a solution.
“There's going to be things that you do to your home, in your life, how you dress that maybe not everybody loves. But what's important is that you love it.”
As for her advice on living a fulfilling life and following your passion, speaking from the heart, she says:
“Always shoot for the moon, as cheesy as that sounds. Never let fear stand in your way. Have a good, strong community of family and friends. This life is going to get you down sometimes. And as long as you have your family and friends there to pick you up, you'll make it through anything.”
Living the dream life she never knew was possible, she wants to scream from the rooftops, “You are capable and you can make it happen, you just gotta be willing to put in the work and sacrifice!”

This dish is from Chef Evon Profitt, the director of culinary operations for all of Westside Concepts in Arizona. This flatbread with grilled peaches, house-made rosemary paneer cheese, soppressata, fresh mint, and pistachios with a balsamic drizzle is to die for.
Yield: 4 flatbreads
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 peaches cut into 8 pieces each
• 12 slices soppressata or any salami
• Fresh mint
• 1 tbsp. olive oil
• ¼ cup pistachios, chopped
• Balsamic reduction
• 4 baked naan bread
FOR THE PANEER CHEESE:
• 6 cups whole milk
• 2 tbsp. rice wine vinegar
• ½ tbsp. fresh rosemary, chopped
• 1 tsp. kosher salt
HOW TO MAKE PANEER CHEESE:
Paneer cheese is made by curdling milk using an acidic additive such as lemon juice or vinegar. Paneer cheese does not use any kind of rennet, nor fermentation or aging.
In a pot, bring 6 cups of whole milk to 200 degrees. Once milk has reached temp., stir in the 2 tbsp. of vinegar and turn off heat; milk will begin to separate. Allow milk to curd for 5 minutes, strain whey and curds into a cheesecloth-lined colander. Transfer curds to a mixing bowl and add chopped rosemary and 1 tsp. kosher salt, mix ingredients together, reserve the cheesecloth for the next step. Place the curds back into the cheesecloth, pull the corners of the cloth together, ring out excess whey from the curds, and hang for 30 minutes to continue draining. Once the curds have drained, place cheesecloth-wrapped curds back into the colander and place a heavy item on top, in order to press the curds into shape and press more of the whey from the cheese, for 3-4 hours. Use cheese fresh or keep refrigerated up to 4 days.
FLATBREAD:
Brush olive oil onto both sides of naan flatbread, and place in oven on rack for 10 minutes at 400 degrees, or grill for 2 minutes each side. Grill peach slices for 2 minutes each side, or place in oiled sauté pan till each side begins to caramelize. On a cutting board, lay flatbread down, and place grilled peach slices around flatbread. Take small pieces of Paneer cheese and place throughout over the peaches. Be creative and find place for the soppressata or salami of your choice. Garnish with crushed pistachios and torn fresh mint. Cut flatbread, transfer to serving plates, and drizzle with balsamic reduction.
“I love the use of fresh, locally sourced peaches, and giving people the chance to make an easy, versatile cheese at home with ingredients that many already have in their refrigerators and pantries.”

5 Steps To A Swoon-Worthy Pantry; Check out @reset_your_nest for sources to all these products.
STEP 1. DESIGN AND SHOP Decide what look you want to create. Measure your shelves and purchase products you LOVE that also fit the space. The more packaging you have the more cluttered and less efficient your space. Buy bigger baskets for bulk items, canisters for things you want to decant and turntables. It’s easier to do one return than to run back to the store 5 times, so buy more than you think you need.
STEP 2. TAKE EVERYTHING OUT, AND I MEAN EVERYTHING! Throw out anything expired, make piles of like items (use post-its to identify categories). Once you have a clean slate, clean your shelves and visualize your new space.
STEP 3. EMPTY PACKAGED ITEMS INTO YOUR NEW BINS AND CONTAINERS. Keep groupings of like things together.
STEP 4. PUT EVERYTHING BACK IN, KEEPING YOUR CATEGORIES OR “ZONES” TOGETHER. Do you have a way to keep spreads and bread close to your toaster? Can you keep your protein powders by your blender? What do you use the most? Make sure it gets the prime real estate and put less used items up high or down low.
STEP 5. MOST IMPORTANT STEP, LABEL! This will help everyone keep things where they belong.
Following these steps will set your swoon-worthy, functional pantry transformation up for success! Ultimately, making life easier and beautiful!
& PHOTOGRAPHY
BY JEN MARTIN, CEO & FOUNDER, RESET YOUR NEST

“Pantries can be both beautiful AND functional. Pantries come in all shapes and sizes, but following this simple method used by professional organizers, any pantry can take your food storage from meh to amazing in a few thoughtful hours.”
Using canisters is the easiest way to upgrade your pantry. Not only are canisters with decanted items beautiful, but they also save space, keep food fresh longer, and are easy to see when you are running low. You can find both glass and plastic airtight canisters to match the look of any pantry. Pro-tip: Only decant items you are replenishing once you run out.

Baskets are the easiest way to add texture, corral like items, create order, and hide clutter. Choose one or two styles that are durable and create the look you are going for. Label baskets with a label that is more general for the zone and makes sense for your family. Dinner, breakfast, drinks, baking, snacks, chips, and pasta are common labels used for baskets.

Turntables are great in pantry corners and storing items that come in bottles or jars. We use turntables for spreads, condiments, sauces, oils, etc. Turntables are easy to clean which makes them a great option for messier food items. Often we’ll create a breakfast zone with decanted cereal, a breakfast bin with oatmeal and pancake mixes, a turntable in the corner with spreads and syrup.
Metal baskets are a great addition to any pantry. We like to keep consistent looking items in these baskets to avoid clutter, for example baking mixes, snack size chip bags, macaroni and cheese, and applesauce pouches. Metal baskets are also great for storing bread and any produce so the items can breathe. We always design with 2-3 baskets group together to create consistency.
