LIFESTYLE LETTER
Wellness Begins Here There’s something about January that invites us to pause, reset, and take a deep breath. Maybe it’s the quiet after the holiday rush, or maybe it’s the promise that a new year brings: a blank calendar, a clean slate, an invitation to take better care of ourselves and each other. Here in Milford, the new year always feels a little brighter. Maybe that’s because so many in our community have made health and wellness their mission, creating spaces and routines that help us slow down, stretch out, and start again. In this month’s issue, we’re celebrating those local champions of well-being who remind us that health extends beyond gym memberships or resolutions to include balance, community, and care. We begin with Re:mind Wellness Boutique, a tranquil haven tucked into the heart of town, where self-care becomes something deeper than a buzzword. Whether through guided meditation, holistic therapies, or mindful retail, Re:mind invites us to reconnect with ourselves – to listen, reset, and remember that wellness starts from within. For those who find their peace in motion, we lace up with the Milford Road Runners, a group that proves running is as much about camaraderie as it is about cardio. Their members span all ages and paces, united by a shared love of the road and the joy that comes from simply showing up rain, shine, or in the case of their Winter Wonderland run this month – even snow. And when life’s twists and turns leave us a little off-kilter, Clukey Family Chiropractic is there to set things right again. With a focus on both body alignment and lifestyle balance, their approach reminds us that health is holistic, tied together by how we move, how we rest, and how we care for the systems that carry us through our days. As we step into 2025, I hope this issue inspires you to find your own version of wellness, whatever that looks like. Maybe it’s a morning run by the harbor, a quiet moment of reflection, or simply remembering to breathe a little deeper. Here’s to a healthy, mindful, and joy-filled new year. Beyond Back Pain Dr. Clukey adjusts patient
When it comes to wellness, few practitioners radiate the warmth, gratitude, and purpose that Dr. Caroline Clukey brings to her work. A Milford native and second-generation chiropractor, she’s built a practice that blends family legacy, faith, and a deep respect for the body’s natural ability to heal. We sat down with Dr. Clukey to talk about her journey, her philosophy of care, and what she loves most about serving the Milford community.
Q: You’re a second-generation chiropractor—and one of four in your family. How did growing up in that environment shape your understanding of health? A: I definitely grew up surrounded by it! When you’re raised in a chiropractic family, you develop this deep understanding of what health truly is— where it comes from, and how to protect and promote it. That perspective shaped everything for me. With that as my constant foundation, my approach has really developed through my own training and clinical experience over the years. My goal in the office is to help people walk away with a better understanding of their own health, because most people have never actually been taught what health is or how to support it long-term. Once you get that awareness, it’s life-changing.

Q: Did you always know you wanted to follow in your family’s footsteps? A: I explored other directions, more or less for process of elimination, however nothing matched the clarity and purpose I found in chiropractic. It’s completely in alignment with who
I am. It’s not just something I do—it’s part of me. It’s given me fulfillment beyond what I could have imagined, and I feel very blessed to wake up every day and love what I do.
Q: Tell us a bit about your education and what led you to eventually open your own practice here in Milford. A: I did my undergraduate studies in pre-chiropractic at Fairfield University and then went on to the University of Bridgeport for chiropractic school—it’s actually the only chiropractic school in New England. Even while I was in school, I pictured having a practice here in Milford. I could visualize the space, the energy, even the checkerboard floors in my adjusting area. But after graduating, I wanted to experience life somewhere new before putting down roots. That’s how I ended up in Hawaii! I worked at what was then the largest chiropractic office in the state— and at one point, the largest in the world. It was an invaluable learning experience. I was part of an office that served hundreds of people a day, and it taught me so much about service, community, and impact.
“
“We’re sitting more, moving less, and
spending so much time in front of screens. That takes a toll. But... the body is designed to heal. My job is to help people reconnect with that truth and give their nervous system the chance to do what it was built to do.”
Q: So what brought you back home to Milford? A: My family, for one—and I’ve always loved Milford. The opportunity to give back to community you were raised in is special. When I opened my practice here in 2017, the community responded right away. We hit the ground running, and we’ve continued to grow every year.
Q: Is your practice connected to your father’s, or did you start completely fresh? A: My father retired long before I opened, so Clukey Family Chiropractic is its own practice – rooted in our family legacy but fully shaped by my CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . vision and the way I serve today. Our patients become like family and I love how personal it is. Chiropractic is deeply individualized, and the way we’ve structured the office allows every person to feel seen, cared for, and supported.
Q: For people who might be new to chiropractic care, how do you explain your philosophy? A: Chiropractic is a science, an art, and a philosophy. At its core, it’s built on the idea that the body is designed to heal and regulate itself. Your brain controls every organ and tissue through your nervous system. When something interferes with that communication, your body can’t function the way it’s supposed to. Chiropractic care identifies and corrects those interferences, restoring that connection so your body can function as it’s designed to. It’s not magic – it’s just how the body works! And when you restore that connection, healing happens naturally.
Q: Many people think of chiropractors as “back pain doctors.” What’s the biggest misconception you want to clear up? A: That’s probably the biggest one – that chiropractic is only for back or neck pain. Of course it helps with those things, but that’s such a small part of what we do. In my office, I’ll see patients from newborns to people in their nineties. Chiropractic care is really about restoring communication within the body, and when that improves, people often notice changes they never expected. I’ve seen great improvements with things like vertigo, migraines, digestion, sleep, immunity, focus, menstrual cycles, breathing, anxiety – you name it. Chiropractic doesn’t treat any of those issues, but it increases nervous system function, and when your nervous system works better, you work better. One of the more incredible stories from chiropractic history was of the first patient ever, who had lost their hearing. An adjustment restored it. The profession was founded thereafter.

Q: Have you noticed any changes in what people are coming in for since the pandemic and the rise of remote work? A: Absolutely – stress is through the roof. So many people are holding stress in their bodies, and their nervous systems are overwhelmed. We’re sitting more, moving less, and spending so much time in front of screens. That takes a toll. But again, the body is designed to heal. My job is to help people reconnect with that truth and give their nervous system the chance to do what it was built to do.
Q: You grew up here in Milford. What do you lovemost about practicing in your hometown? A: Everything! Milford has such a great mix of energy – it’s humble, friendly, and so supportive of small business. To serve the community I grew up in feels really special. People always ask me, “How could you leave Hawaii and come back?” But Milford is home. There’s nothing like being able to care for your neighbors and the families you grew up around.
Q: Outside the office, how do you like to spend your time? A: My husband and I love being outdoors. In the winter, we’re skiing in Vermont whenever we can. In the summer, we’re biking or boating along the Milford coast – anything that gets us outside and near the beach. I also love to cook. My mom passed that down to me. My dad’s legacy is chiropractic, but my mom’s is definitely cooking! To me, both are about connection and care – showing love through what you do.
Q: What’s one thing you want readers to take away from your approach to chiropractic care? A: That health isn’t something you chase – it’s something you nurture. My job is just to help remove whatever’s getting in the way. When you understand that your body is capable, resilient, and powerful, it changes everything. That’s the message I want to share – not just in my office, but in our community. Clukey Family Chiropractic 95 Golden Hill Street, Milford, CT www.clukeychiropractic.com

When Danielle Marconi and Meredith Munk first toured the empty space on Naugatuck Avenue in 2022, it was hard to see past the concrete floors, drop ceilings, and mallard duck wallpaper. The former garage didn’t exactly scream “wellness sanctuary.” But what the two friends saw was possibility – a vision they had manifested one evening over tacos, and one that would finally make mental health care and holistic wellness feel less like intimidating medical appointments and more like meeting up with friends who genuinely care. Today, Re:mind Wellness Boutique is exactly what they envisioned: a 4,000-square-foot space where getting counseling feels as normal as getting a massage, and where self-care isn’t shrouded in mystique or judgment. Accessibility is a staple of the business model: the welcoming, non-pretentious vibe encourages people to show up just as they are. For Marconi, the dream had been percolating for over two decades. A school counselor with 24 years of experience, Reiki Master, and licensed massage therapist, she kept a journal back in 2002 that outlined her vision right down to the details: a sauna, books to borrow, a retail store, and counseling services all under one roof. Munk, meanwhile, has recently received her yoga instruction certification from Marconi’s yoga studio, Bend, just up the road. Her background in art, interior design, and fashion had given way to a passion for wellness about twelve years ago. When Marconi shared her vision for a counseling center with spa services, Munk had her own ideas about adding a salt room and retail boutique. Within two to three weeks, they were touring spaces. The buildout was a labor of love. “It wasn’t easy,” Munk remembers, “but this place was built by many – by moms, dads, friends, and community members who loved this space as much as we did.” By fall 2022, they opened their doors to a business model that was intentionally different.
At its heart, Re:mind operates on a simple but revolutionary premise: mental health counseling should feel as accessible and normalized as any other wellness service. The boutique functions as two businesses under one roof: traditional counseling services that accept insurance alongside membership-based or a la carte spa and wellness offerings. Currently employing nearly 20 people, including clinicians who see clients from tweens to adults for everything from generalized anxiety to life transitions, Re:mind is rewriting the rules on what mental health care can look like. “We have truly gifted and talented workers, estheticians, and energetic therapists,” Marconi notes. “We are so grateful to the people who make this place feel like home.” After hearing from therapy clients that their selfcare and mental health practices were often addressed separately, Marconi realized that “there’s no program or container for all things.” Re:mind was born with the vision to eliminate that sense of overwhelm by offering everything in one accessible location. “We want people to create a habit of self-care and self-awareness,” she says. “To help everyone lead more balanced and emotionally regulated lifestyles.” The membership model reinforces their mission to make self-care a non-negotiable. For $145 monthly, members get a 60-minute service of their choice – massage, facial, Reiki, or body treatment – plus a salt therapy session, infrared sauna session, and meditation class. “We’re forcing you to take care of yourself,” Munk says. It’s an elevator pitch that works; the actual value of those services would be over $300. Beyond the memberships, Re:mind offers an impressive array of services spanning mind, body, and spirit. The “mind” offerings include professional counseling, holistic life coaching, and group therapy. Under “body,” guests can choose from therapeutic massage, prenatal massage, Thai massage, acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, facials, body wraps and scrubs, assisted stretching, craniosacral therapy, and

compression therapy for athletic recovery. The “spirit” menu features Reiki sessions, sound therapy experiences with tuning forks and singing bowls, guided meditation classes, and spiritual readings. Their “curious hours” – typically 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, with weekend availability – accommodate people’s work schedules while leaving daytime hours open for private parties, workshops, and special events. But what truly sets Re:mind apart is the atmosphere. The space is thoughtfully designed with unique décor that feels more like a stylish friend’s home than a clinical setting. Regular workshops and events, from manifestation seminars to their self-care book
club that pairs literature with salt sessions and sound baths, create genuine community. “We have such a family,” Munk reflects. “We were so focused on what we’re giving our clients, but now being reflective, we’re getting a lot back from them too.” The city’s big heart and support for small businesses made Re:mind possible. Now they’re paying it forward, creating a space where everyone – from the wellness-curious to the self-care devoted – can find exactly what they need. “Come in. Wander around. Ask questions,” Munk says. “We’ll show you the salt room, introduce you to the sauna, and probably make you laugh.”

On a crisp January morning, the shoreline streets of Milford buzz with sneakers striking pavement and the steady rhythm of breath meeting cold air. The Winter Wonderland 5-Miler, held each year on the last Sunday of January, draws runners from across Connecticut. Some chase personal records, others enjoy the feeling of community amidst the often-isolating winter months. At the heart of it all is a club that has quietly defined Milford’s running spirit for nearly half a century. Founded by a small group of enthusiasts who simply loved to run, the Milford Road Runners has grown to a club of around 180 members. “Some of them are old-time runners who don’t even run anymore,” the club’s Vice President, Chuck Winchell, explains. “But they still come out to cheer us on.” That camaraderie – between those still racing and those now clapping from the sidelines – is what keeps generations of members coming back for more.

occasional spectator in mittens clutching coffee. “We’ve had years where people wear shorts,” Jerry says, “and others where it’s fifteen degrees. But the spirit never changes.”
MORE THAN MEDALS
The Road Runners’ purpose extends beyond the finish line. Each year, the group awards three scholarships to graduating Milford high-school students who embody dedication and sportsmanship. “We had 17 applications this year,” Jerry shares. “They don’t have to run in college – it’s about what running taught them: perseverance, balance, commitment.” Each scholarship is funded primarily by the club’s races and community partnerships. The club also sponsors an annual cross-country meet between Milford’s four high schools, complete with trophies, medals, and a healthy dose of hometown rivalry. It’s one of several ways the group invests in the next generation. “We want kids to see running not just as a sport, but as something they can do for life,” Jerry says. “Some of our adult members first ran with us as kids, and now they’re bringing their own children.” That spirit shines brightest each summer during the club’s Kids’ Track Series, hosted at Foran High School. The series draws nearly 200 children. Jerry notes, “some are two years old, running with their parents. Others are teenagers competing seriously. But everyone’s smiling.” It’s become a family tradition in Milford, and a reminder that health, fitness, and community start with small steps.
MILES AND MEMORIES A COMMUNITY THAT RUNS DEEP
The Milford Road Runners are more than a club; they’re a multigenerational community bound by a shared passion for movement. Their events range from competitive races to social runs, family track nights, and quirky in-house challenges. There’s even an internal Grand Prix series where runners of similar paces compete in friendly rivalries throughout the year. “You’re not going up against the best in the world,” Club President Jerry Meshell laughs, “But it’s about seeing improvement – and sometimes a little good-natured trash talk.” For the competitive few, the club is also part of the USA Track & Field Grand Prix series, where Connecticut running clubs vie for top honors across a calendar of races. But as Chuck put it, “Most of us are recreational types now. We’re here because we love running, and we love Milford.” The club’s Winter Wonderland 5-Miler and its July 4th race, hosted at Tribus Beer Co., are local institutions. The Winter Wonderland course loops from Platt Tech High School through city streets lined with volunteers, families, and even the
The Milford Road Runners’ calendar is full of rituals that define its culture: weekly group runs, destination marathons, and the much-anticipated December holiday party, where awards are handed out for the Grand Prix standings. “Anyone who runs six races gets a long-sleeve shirt,” Jerry notes. “It’s a small way to celebrate that commitment.” CONTINUED >

Members travel together for destination races like the Marine Corps Marathon, Philadelphia Half, or Cincinnati’s Flying Pig. “We make it a trip,” Jerry explains. “It’s camaraderie, a chance to celebrate what we’ve built here.” Even injuries become part of the shared story. Tales of resilience pass between friends over post-run coffee, and those recovering from a setback are welcomed, celebrated, and supported. As Chuck reflected after a recent window of recovery, “running beats you up, but it gives you back even more. The community keeps you going.” Within the club, generations overlap naturally. Seniors in their seventies share advice with beginners training for their first 5K. One standout runner, Janet Voelpert, holds American records in the 15K and 10-mile races for women aged 75–79. “She’s amazing,” Chuck says. “She just keeps getting better and is constantly improving.” That sense of lifelong vitality captures the Road Runners’ essence: movement as medicine, age as just another number.

HAM, EGGS, AND DONUTS
Not every event is serious. Over the years, the Road Runners have found humor and joy in the offbeat. There’s the “prediction run,” where participants must remove their watches and guess their finish time. The winner is whoever finishes closest to their prediction, not fastest. And then there was the infamous “donut run,” which required eating donuts mid-race. “Six donuts,” Jerry recalls, laughing. “If you threw up, you were disqualified.” Other challenges include team mileage goals (“Run 2,025 miles in 2025”) and themed fun runs. Chuck, modestly describing himself as a “ham and egg” runner, nods to the group’s easygoing spirit. Even their social media reflects this warmth: one public Facebook page for announcements and one private page for members to plan runs, swap training tips, and sometimes just check in on each other.
“IT’S CAMARADERIE, A CHANCE TO CELEBRATE WHAT WE’VE BUILT HERE.” LOCAL ROOTS, LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS
The Road Runners’ success is powered by community support. Local businesses like Patriot Bank, Patel Podiatry, and Tribus Beer Co. sponsor races and provide water, prizes, and volunteers. “It’s truly a town effort,” Jerry says. “Everyone pitches in – businesses, schools, even the health department.” (Although, as they joked, navigating food-safety rules for post-race watermelon slices can be a marathon of its own.) For race directors, that teamwork is essential. Each event requires coordination with the city, police, and volunteers, who brave winter winds to staff intersections or hand out water. “We couldn’t do it without them,” Jerry affirms. “They’re the real heroes of race day.”
A CLUB FOR EVERY PACE
Perhaps what makes the Milford Road Runners most special is their inclusivity. Membership costs just $10 a year, and all are welcome – whether you’re training for marathons or walking your first mile. Weekly runs cater to every schedule and stamina level: Monday “recovery” runs at Platt Tech, Wednesday evening meetups, Saturday group jogs, and spontaneous Sunday outings along
the boardwalk. “There’s always someone to run with,” Jerry notes, having run 18 miles with a small group just the day before. “And if you’re not feeling it that day, there’s always someone to talk to.” The club’s newsletter, sent out weekly, chronicles it all: race results, photos, upcoming events, and personal milestones. Their Instagram page, managed by a younger volunteer, keeps the community connected visually. Photos of smiling finishers and medal ceremonies remind followers that the club’s energy is contagious.
BEYOND THE FINISH LINE
As the Road Runners approach another Winter Wonderland, their story feels deeply intertwined with Milford itself. They embody what small towns do best: creating spaces where people of all ages can show up, share miles, and find meaning in motion. The club has weathered storms, both literal and figurative – from frigid race days to pandemic disruptions – and each time, it’s found its stride again. Chuck sums it up: “Running keeps us healthy, sure. But the real wellness comes from showing up for each other.” The Winter Wonderland 5-miler will take place on Sunday, January 25. Moda Hair Studio Brings Upscale Style to Downtown Milford
A CUT ABOVE
ARTICLE BY CHELSEA SPATA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK ARNOLD We sat down with Renée Castiglione, owner of Moda Hair Studio, to talk about her journey in the hair industry and what makes her Milford business special.
to create a space where people felt welcome and celebrated for their skills.
Q: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE HAIR INDUSTRY?
A: We work as a team. We don’t do chair rentals, and I personally train every stylist before they go on the floor, giving them all the education I received when I was younger. There’s no competition here. Clients can move between stylists if they want to try someone different, and we’d rather keep them in the salon family than lose them elsewhere. My longest employee has been with me 28 years! I think it works because I’m behind the chair the whole time, working alongside everyone.
A: I went to hairdressing school two days after graduating high school! I completed an accelerated program and was working as a hairdresser at 17, though I couldn’t get licensed until I turned 18. I started in Guilford but moved to Milford when an educator I worked with asked me to join his salon. That was back in the ‘80s when perms were really big, and I was doing all the color and chemical work.
Q: WHAT LED YOU TO OPEN MODA HAIR STUDIO?
A: I opened my first salon in 1994 with a business partner, then opened Moda on my own in 1998. At 24, I had no business experience whatsoever, but I was determined to create a really positive environment for people who wanted to do hair. I knew I wanted

Q: WHAT MAKES MODA HAIR STUDIO STAND OUT?
Q: WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING IN MILFORD?
A: Everything! I loved Milford so much. The community is real – people rally together, especially in times of need. We have the best beaches, great shops, and wonderful events on the green. The people here are genuinely supportive of small businesses, and that makes all the difference.

U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED
The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.
1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.
34
EDU CAT ION C OR N E R | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS
2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”
Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows. CONTINUED >

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”
Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.
4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”
Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.
6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”
Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1, DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.
7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”
Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.

“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive self-criticism to continuously raise the standard of care.”
