LIFESTYLE LETTER

New Season, Same Neighborhood Every September, it feels like the start to something new. The kids are back in school, the days start to get a little shorter, and football is finally back. Theres a new sense of energy that comes with this. The routines are back and holiday planning is in full swing. It’s honestly my favorite time of year. That same energy carries into this issue, our Style issue, though we’re using that term loosely. Yes, we’re covering fashion trends and more, but there’s also the reset that comes with fall: a haircut, a redesign in your house that actually makes sense, a space that feels intentional. That kind of thing. We spent time this month with Zev O’Brien of ZOB Design, the architect behind a personal speakeasy that’s become one of the best hidden secrets in the city. The level of detail in that space, down to how you even find your way in, makes for a genuinely interesting conversation about design. We also caught up with Heather Hope of House of Colour for a seasonal style feature on what’s actually working for fall this year. Thorin Decatur of Queen City Barber shares his take on fall grooming. And Clarine Warren of The Clarine Edit breaks down her approach to your closet and the transformation she wants to solve for, instead of just adding more to it. What I like about this lineup is that these are local names doing sharp, specific work, the kind of businesses that make Denver feel like Denver instead of anywhere else. Whether you’re after a new barber, a color consult, or just curious what’s behind that speakeasy door, this issue has you covered. As always, thanks for reading, and for supporting the local businesses that make this magazine possible. 1-7: Mile High City Lifestyle celebrated one year of connecting Denver neighbors with a gathering at Leopold Bros. Distillery, and the turnout said it all. Local business owners, readers, and community partners filled the tasting room, trading stories over pours of the distillery’s small batch spirits while string lights and exposed timber beams set the backdrop. Guests wandered through the working distillery for an inside look at the copper stills and towering barrel stacks, learning how Leopold Bros. crafts its spirits right here in Denver. Conversations spilled from the bar into the barrel room, where new faces became new friends and longtime supporters reflected on a first year full of growth. It was a fitting way to mark the milestone, surrounded by the same local spirit that Mile High City Lifestyle set out to celebrate from day one.

THE ART OF LIVING WELL ARTICLE BY VALERIE BIANCULLI PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAKE HOLSCHUH PHOTOGRAPHY

How ZOB Design Studio is creating homes that elevate everyday living

For Zev O’Brien, principal of ZOB Design Studio, great architecture isn’t just about creating beautiful homes, it’s about creating spaces that transform the way people live. “I’ve always been interested in creating spaces for people and how they experience them,” O’Brien says. “People want spaces that are highly functional, but they also want moments of joy. Whether it’s a kitchen where everything just works perfectly or a staircase that frames the tip of a mountain through a window, those experiences matter.” That philosophy is showcased in one of the firm’s most distinctive projects: a custom accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in Denver’s Wash Park neighborhood. “This project was special right from the beginning in that it was the first legally permitted ADU in Wash Park after going through a rezoning process,” O’Brien explains. “At the time, the neighborhood’s zoning didn’t allow ADUs, so we had to rezone the property before we could even begin designing.” Designed to blend seamlessly with the original home and surrounding neighborhood, the project is anything but ordinary. Beneath a two-car garage sits a hidden speakeasy, while the ADU above serves as a welcoming retreat for family and guests complete with a steam room and entertainment space. CONTINUED >

13

“It’s not your typical one- or two-bedroom ADU,” O’Brien says. “It’s really a place for entertaining and gathering. Somehow we were able to fit everything the client wanted—a garage, gym, speakeasy, guest quarters—and still make it feel cohesive.” For homeowner Jake Schneiders, the design delivers exactly the experience he envisioned. “The upstairs is our family room. It’s very open, airy and spacious with beautiful natural light,” Schneiders says. “But when you go down to the bar, you kind of get transported away from Denver. That was the ultimate experience I was going for.” As ADUs continue to grow in popularity across Denver, O’Brien believes the demand is fueled by homeowners looking for greater flexibility. “People love where they live,” he says. “They’re reinvesting in their homes because they need more flexibility. It might be that they work from home now, need space for family, or want the potential for rental income. An ADU gives them options.” When designing a custom home or ADU, O’Brien encourages clients to think beyond finishes and floor plans. “The biggest question isn’t what style you like, it’s how you want to live,” he says. “What does your perfect day look like? Those little details shape your daily experience.” That client-centered philosophy defines every ZOB Design Studio project. Rather than imposing a signature style, O’Brien works collaboratively with homeowners, using questionnaires, inspiration boards and multiple design concepts to uncover their vision. “Our projects don’t all look the same because our clients don’t all look the same,” he says. “Our job is to draw out our clients’ vision and celebrate it architecturally.” Schneiders says that collaborative approach was evident from start to finish. “ZOB Design Studio was very professional, very responsive, and they’re going to go to bat for you every step of the way,” he says. “They’re there for the entire process.” Ultimately, O’Brien believes thoughtful design has the power to improve everyday life. “A well-designed space can transform how you live,” he says. “When your home truly works for you, it changes your energy. It helps you thrive instead of simply living in the space.” For O’Brien, that’s the true measure of success: creating homes that not only look beautiful, but enrich the lives of the people who call them home.

INGREDIENTS: • • • • • •

1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 Honeycrisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped

DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.

NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.

END THE SUMMER RIGHT WITH HOT CHERRY GLAZED BABY BACK RIBS

HOT CHERRY GLAZED BABY BACK RIBS ARTICLE BY JANEY HAWLEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JULEE HO MEDIA Handcrafted in Colorado, Profanity Jam is a family owned, small batch gourmet jam company making habanero based jams that are anything but boring. We believe great food should have a little attitude, which is why every jar is packed with premium ingredients, bold flavor combinations, and just the right amount of sass. Whether you're building a charcuterie board, glazing grilled meats, mixing cocktails, or looking to make people say, "What the hell is in this?" Profanity Jam is here to help you raise a little culinary hell, one delicious bite at a time.

HOT CHERRY GLAZED BABY BACK RIBS Serves: 2 Time - Prep: 10 | Cook: 4 hours

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • •

Half rack baby back ribs ½ + ¾ tsp smoked paprika 1 tsp garlic powder ¼ cup Profanity Jam Cherry Habanero Jam 2 tbsp butter 2 cups coleslaw mix 1/3 cup mayonnaise 1 tbsp lemon juice Salt pepper TOOLS Sheet pan Aluminum foil

Directions

Step 1 - Rub the ribs In a small bowl, mix ⅛ tsp salt, ¼ tsp black pepper, ½ tsp smoked paprika, and garlic powder. Sprinkle the dry rub all over the meat side of the ribs, spreading and pressing into the meat with your hands. Step 2 - Bake low & slow Place the ribs meat side down onto a sheet of aluminum foil, and wrap tightly. Place wrapped ribs on a sheet pan meat side down and bake for 3½ hours at 225°F.

Profanity Jam Profanity Jam began with Mary's love of cooking and a self taught passion for canning. One recipe, her signature Habanero Jam, changed everything. With an FDA approved facility, a trusted distributor, and her daughter in law Kay by her side, Mary grew a kitchen hobby into a Colorado based, family owned business creating bold, handcrafted flavors with a little fun.

Step 3 - Glaze the ribs Carefully remove the ribs from the foil, and flip them so they are meat side up. Place two tbsp of butter on top of the ribs and then cover with some of the Profanity Jam Cherry Habanero Jam. Put them back in the oven uncovered for another ½ hour, occasionally taking them out and glazing with more jam. Step 4 - Make the coleslaw In a medium bowl, mix the coleslaw mix, mayonnaise, lemon juice, smoked paprika, and a pinch of salt & pepper. Serve alongside the ribs and enjoy!

ARTICLE BY HEATHER HOPE PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF HOUSE OF COLOUR

DRESSED WITH INTENTION LOCAL STYLIST HEATHER HOPE BREAKS DOWN THE SEASON'S COLORS AND TRENDS, AND HOW TO MAKE THEM WORK FOR YOUR OWN PERSONAL STYLE. There's a particular kind of overwhelm that shows up at the start of a new season. The trends shift, the weather turns, and suddenly getting dressed in the morning takes more thought than it used to. Heather Hope has spent more than seven years helping people cut through that overwhelm. She owns the local franchise of House of Colour, a global personal styling company, and she works with clients across Denver as a personal stylist, helping them understand their seasonal color palette and build a style that actually feels like them, no matter what’s on the fashion runways.

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | STYLE + BE AU T Y

“The key to looking and feeling good is understanding how to wear the trends so that they flatter your personal coloring and body shape.”

Twice a year, House of Colour evaluates the key fashion trends from Paris, Milan, New York and London: the colors defining the months ahead, and the style directions worth paying attention to. Identifying the trends is one thing. Understanding how to wear them is another, and that's the part Heather specializes in. "Think of this guide and my expert insight as resources to make sense of the season, so getting dressed feels simpler, more intentional, and more like you," Heather says. "The key to looking and feeling good is understanding how to wear the trends so that they flatter your personal coloring and body shape, and -- most importantly -- help you express your personal style. With these filters, trends can feel wearable, modern, and completely your own." According to Heather, this season leans into a balance: rich, earthy tones paired against energizing brights, creating color stories that feel confident and easy to wear. On the style side, she points to something for everyone, from romantic, gilded looks reimagined for now, to heritage dressing pulled from equestrian tradition. CONTINUED >

This Season’s Colors, According to Heather Grounded Earth: Rich browns, layered tonally for warmth and depth, or paired with neutrals for a look that feels modern and quietly confident. Red Heat: Red holds its place as a core color of the season, showing up everywhere from footwear to accessories to full looks. Polished Purple: Once reserved for royalty, purple is back as this season's signature dark, worn as a small accent or a full statement. Nocturnal Nights: Black-on-black gets elevated through texture, matte against shine, smooth leather next to something plush and furry. Fresh Greens: Green shifts toward acidic moss and golden citrine, bringing freshness to clothing, accessories and shoes alike. Blue Currents: Brighter, more vivid blues bring energy into the mix. Golden Acacia: A golden yellow that feels natural and rich rather than flashy.

Style Directions Heather is Watching Coven Coded: Minimal shapes meet dramatic flair in pieces that sculpt the body and play with volume, grounded in moody black-on-black and modern purples. Gilded Age: Built on contrast, matte against shine, heritage fabrics, elevated finishes that still feel functional. Modern Heirloom: Victorian silhouettes reimagined so they read playful and wearable, not costume-like. Country Codes: Equestrian and utility influences bring heritage dressing back, with rich layers, tactile textures and a neutral palette. Sculpted Power: Minimalism taken to a maximalist place, with clean, sculpted shapes that feel smooth and engineered, soft and strong at once, balancing authority with wearability. For Heather, the goal is always the same, no matter what's trending: turning confusion into clarity, and insecurity into confidence, one client at a time. LOCAL boutique dental PRACTICE welcomes new PATIENTS Providing dental care that focuses on complete health and wellness. ARTICLE BY ANNE HEBERT PHOTOGRAPHY BY MORGAN TISDALE

Oneida Park Dental Studio is the brainchild of Terry L. Brewick, DDS, a longtime resident of Denver’s Park Hill neighborhood. “I previously had a practice in the Capitol Hill area for over 30-years,” he explains. “After that practice was sold, I have been fortunate to be welcomed with open arms at my new location.” Dr. Terry believes in taking a personal approach with his patients. “I don’t want to run people through the office like cattle,” he says. “I firmly believe in taking time to diagnose a patient’s issues and help them to understand their options.” Dr. Terry earned his degree at the University of Nebraska College of Dental Medicine. He is a fellow at the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy where he was the longest serving president. He is a past president of the Colorado Dental Association Foundation, and he was presented with an Honorary Alumni award in 2013 from the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Terry has been a member of the Wellness Dentistry Network since 2016. He is also a member of the American Dental Association, the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, the Colorado Dental Association (CDA), and the Metro Denver Dental Society. He serves as a mentor in continuing education at the Kois Center in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Terry was awarded a Top Dentist recognition through a vote of his peers by 5280 magazine. In addition to his practice and many affiliations, Dr. Terry is proud to provide altruistic services to those in need. With a grant from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, Dr. Terry was instrumental in starting the Howard Dental Center, dedicated to a private practice approach to providing care to HIV-positive patients and those who could not otherwise afford

dental care. The Howard Dental Center became a resource for practitioner education about universal precautions, ensuring a safe environment for patients and health care providers. “I am proud of who I am, and I enjoy participating in social activism efforts promoting good causes,” says Dr. Terry. “He is pleased to have served as a chair at Project Angel Heart, a Denver-based non-profit that provides medically tailored meals to patients with severe illnesses like cancer, HIV/AIDS, and kidney disease with an aim to improving patient health and reducing medical costs. Two of Dr. Terry’s interests are vital to his practice and his participation in the non-profit world. “I love to entertain, and design is a favorite pastime,” he notes. He created the interior of his Park Hill home and loves to host charitable and work-related events there. Dr. Terry also designed his current office featuring a welcoming, Palm Springs vibe that calms and soothes. A beautifully neutral color palette is enhanced by nature in the form of a tree pattern on the office’s wallcoverings, and an abundance of vibrant green and blooming plants. The exam rooms feature relaxing artwork, and a lab is located in-house. Even the practice logo was designed to reflect Dr. Terry’s passion for dentistry and the place he calls home. “Inspired by a human’s eight molars, the pattern comes together and resembles the Columbine, Colorado’s state flower,” he explains. Rick Morales-Brewick is Dr. Terry’s dental assistant, office coordinator, and manages the practice’s social media. Mandy Spanyers, a Colorado native, is the office’s manager and assists patients with all aspects of their treatment. When Dr. Terry is away from the office, you might find him in his garden cultivating an assortment of plants—or scrounging through local antique stores for a special find. He and his husband are also the proud owners of two Samoyeds, Taylor and Oakley. “We have an RV that we christened The Little Acorn, and we enjoy using it to travel to shows where our dogs compete.” “I have always had the loveliest patients,” Dr. Terry says. “I have taken care of some of them for over 40-years, but my new patients are also just delightful.”

A C H A IR WOR T H F OL L OW ING HOW THORIN DECATUR BUILT LOYALTY ONE CUT AT A TIME. Q&A WITH THORIN DECATUR

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNA SIMPSON

28

H AIR CA R E | STYL E + BEAU T Y

You've got clients who've followed you through multiple shops for 8, 9, even 10+ years. What do you think it is about the experience you create that keeps people coming back no matter where you set up shop? - I think it comes down to trust. A haircut is personal — guys are trusting me with how they show up in the world. Once you build that trust, my location doesn’t matter. They’re coming back because of the relationship we have. I know their kids, their job changes, what they like and don’t like about their hair without them having to explain it every time. That’s not something you find by walking into a random shop."

Queen City Barber is finally your own place. What was it like building a shop that's truly yours, and what do you want people to feel the moment they walk in? - "Honestly, it’s comforting. After years of cutting in other shops — I made every decision, from the chair, lighting, art on the walls, music and how it feels when you walk in. I want people to feel relaxed and comfortable when they’re here. Not rushed, not just a number in a chair — like they’re in a place that was built with them in mind." A lot of guys just want a quick cut, but your regulars talk about the conversation and the vibe just as much as the haircut itself. How do you think about the barber chair as more than just a haircut? - "A lot of guys don’t have a place where they can just talk — no agenda, no judgment. My chair is that place. I’ve heard about promotions, breakups, new babies, vacations, hard days at work etc My job is to give a great cut, but it’s also to be present and listen for whatever that time turns into. That’s the real service." Consistency comes up in almost every review you get. What's your process for making sure a client gets the exact same great cut every single time, even years apart? - "I remember a lot of what they would never even think about, but it’s also muscle memory and paying attention. I study a guy’s head shape and hair pattern every time they’re in the chair and after that it’s

about replicating what worked, not reinventing it every visit unless they ask for a change." Beard trims get a special shoutout from your clients. What's one tip you'd give guys at home for keeping their beard looking sharp between visits? - "Less is more! Most guys try to reshape it completely if they see a couple hairs out of place. They go crazy on it and all of a sudden they have to shave their beard off, instantly regretting the last 10/15 mins in the bathroom!" After all these years and all these shops, how has being part of the Denver community shaped who you are as a barber, and what does it mean to finally plant your flag here? - Denver’s given me everything — my home, my clients, my reputation, my craft. This city grew and changed with me through every shop I’ve worked out of, other barbers and hairstylists I’ve learned from and now I get to give something back that is uniquely me. Queen City Barber is a thank-you to the city that is home.

The Art of the Edit Local stylist Clarine Warren on ditching trends, editing your closet down to what works, and dressing like yourself in a city with no rules

There's a moment most of us know well: standing in front of a closet stuffed with clothes, and somehow having nothing to wear. For Clarine, founder of The Clarine Edit, that feeling is exactly what she built her business to solve — not by adding more, but by editing what's already there. "I chose the word 'edit' because my clients come to me ready for a transformation, not just to add more to what they already have," she says. It's not about clearing out the whole closet. It's about something deeper — helping people rediscover a more confident version of themselves, one outfit at a time. Clarine's path to personal styling wasn't a straight line. She's always loved getting dressed as a form of self-expression, staying plugged into trends and brands in her free time. But the real shift came after raising three kids and helping each one find their own sense of style — whether that meant a superhero cape or a first-day-of-school outfit. That experience convinced her it was time to build something bigger. So what's actually holding people back from getting dressed with confidence? According to Clarine, it usually comes down to a closet that isn't cohesive — full of pieces bought because they were trendy or beautiful, without a clear place in the bigger picture. Her fix: aim for roughly 80% of your closet to work together and tell your story, and leave room for the rest — special-occasion pieces, statement heels you rarely wear but never want to part with. When the foundation is solid, getting dressed stops being a daily negotiation. For clients navigating a big life shift — a new job, a new season of life, a new body — the process starts with trust. Clarine begins with a one-on-one call, no topic off the table, so clients feel comfortable enough to be honest about what they're ready to let go of. It can be a hard conversation. Then comes the reward: shopping for the pieces that complete the transformation, so every morning becomes a moment of actually recognizing who's looking back in the mirror.

If there's one formula readers can borrow tomorrow morning, Clarine doesn't overthink it: a crisp white t-shirt, perfectly fitting jeans, gold hoops, and loafers. Simple, 90s-inspired, and — in her experience — the outfit that gets the most compliments. As an East Coast transplant and self-described New York City girl, Clarine has found something unexpectedly freeing about Denver's style scene. "Denver style has no rules," she says — cowboy boots with anything, a great heel for dinner in RiNo or Cherry Creek, Tevas with athleisure after a brewery run. What Denver and New York share, in her view, is permission: there's no wrong way to do it, only your way. That philosophy is the heart of her work. It doesn't matter what's trending or what anyone else thinks is "right." Her job is to help clients figure out what actually feels like them, based on their personality, body type, and lifestyle — a guide, not a gatekeeper. As Clarine puts it, with her, anything goes. For neighbors looking to start their own closet edit, that mindset might be the most useful takeaway: confidence isn't about owning more, it's about owning pieces that actually reflect who you are. In a city as unpretentious as Denver, that kind of ease feels right at home.
