Dear Neighbors, It is with great pride and excitement that I welcome you to the very first issue of Mile High City Lifestyle —a lifestyle magazine created by and for the vibrant community of Denver, Colorado. What makes a place truly special isn't just its landmarks or skyline, but the people, stories, and everyday details that weave our lives together. Whether you're a lifelong resident or a newcomer settling in, this magazine is your invitation to slow down and celebrate the local charm that surrounds us. Each month, we'll bring you curated content that reflects the spirit of our community—profiles on inspiring local business owners, the hidden gems on our streets, upcoming events you won’t want to miss, and thoughtful features on food, home, wellness, and more. We’re passionate about supporting small businesses, spotlighting local talent, and sharing the kind of stories that remind us why we chose to call this place home. Launching this magazine has been a dream driven by a simple belief: that a stronger, more connected community starts with understanding and appreciating one another. My hope is that you’ll find these pages as comforting and inspiring as a good cup of coffee with an old friend. This is just the beginning—and we’d love to grow with your input, ideas, and stories. After all, Mile High City Lifestyle is more than a publication. It’s a conversation. Thank you for joining us on this exciting journey! Best Regards,

*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.
While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).

The Charm and Communit y o f Yo r k S t re e t Ya rd s ARTICLE BY NATE THOMAS PHOTOGRAPHY BY SAMUEL VICKREY
Tucked away in Denver’s Clayton neighborhood, a once-overlooked industrial campus has undergone a remarkable transformation. York Street Yards (located at 3821-3893 Steele St, Denver, CO 80205), a 37-acre site filled with history, has quietly reinvented itself as one of the city’s CONTINUED >

most vibrant and unique urban spaces. With its weathered brick buildings and revitalized layout, it offers a compelling blend of historic charm and modern energy—a true hidden gem that bridges Denver’s past with its future. Originally constructed in 1942, the site served as a U.S. Army medical supply depot during World War II. It played a critical role in distributing essential equipment during the war and continued to serve the government for decades, including a period as a Peace Corps training ground. By the early 2000s, however, the area had fallen into disuse. In 2014, redevelopment efforts began with a clear vision: to preserve the historical integrity of the property while reimagining it for contemporary needs. That vision has come to life in remarkable ways. York Street Yards today is a dynamic, mixed-use destination that houses small businesses, artisans, creatives, and entrepreneurs. Its original brick buildings remain intact—strong, worn, and full of character—now repurposed into locally owned cafés, design studios, breweries, and fitness spaces. This thoughtful reuse not only reduces environmental waste but also keeps the soul of the neighborhood alive. Walking through the campus feels a little like discovering a well-kept secret. The pace is unhurried, but creativity pulses beneath the surface. Around each corner, something new awaits— perhaps a fresh roast from a local coffee shop, a boutique offering handcrafted goods, or a studio preparing for a gallery night. Unlike cookie-cutter developments, the businesses here are run by passionate individuals deeply invested in their craft and community. This sense of authenticity is central to what makes York Street Yards stand out. It’s not just a place to shop or grab a drink—it’s a space to connect. The neighborhood supports a culture rooted in sustainability, collaboration, and local pride. Denver has long been known for its entrepreneurial spirit, and this campus reflects that ethos in every detail. Here, supporting local isn’t a slogan— it’s a way of life.

The project’s design emphasizes adaptive reuse—a growing trend in urban redevelopment. Rather than demolish the historic buildings, developers chose to preserve and repurpose them, showcasing a commitment to both sustainability and architectural heritage. The result is a place that feels grounded and genuine, not overly polished or sterile. It’s this balance between grit and intention that gives York Street Yards its distinctive character. More than just a collection of businesses, the campus operates like a small ecosystem. The sense of community is tangible, whether you’re sharing conversation with a barista who knows your name or exploring creative studios that open their doors to visitors. In a city that’s constantly evolving, York Street Yards serves as a reminder of the value in slowing down and engaging with spaces that prioritize human connection.
The offerings continue to grow. Today, you’ll find boutique retailers, craft breweries, fitness studios, and even a dog park—all thoughtfully integrated into the campus. Each addition builds on the original vision of creating a space that’s inclusive, forward-thinking, and grounded in local culture. It’s a model of how adaptive, community-first development can benefit both residents and businesses. If you're looking for a place in Denver that’s fresh yet full of character, York Street Yards is well worth a visit. It’s more than just another urban redevelopment—it’s a place with soul. Whether you’re sipping coffee, meeting a local maker, or simply soaking in the creative energy, it’s a space that invites you to experience the city a little differently. And in a world that often moves too fast, that kind of authenticity is something truly worth discovering.

Hosting the Perfect Dinner Party PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES
Your next event, served alfresco Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings. For this alfresco dinner party, Chef Kyle draws on his favorite recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast.
Insider Tips for Hosting: • Build a menu around the season. Start with what produce is available locally based on the season for the most authentic meal experience. For instance, Chef Kyle says “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” but that meal served in the heat of summer wouldn’t hit the same. In-season fruits and vegetables will always be of highest quality and best taste. • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says.
20
H OST IN G T IP S | FO O D + BE VE RAGE
• Draw inspiration from the season’s colors and temperatures. For spring and summer, think flowers, fresh herbs and linens. For Fall, think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer. For winter, head indoors to create a cozy environment for guests to connect. • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” •
As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.” Insider Tips for Hosting: “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.”

Fresh Roasted Brussels Sprouts & Hardwood Smoked Bacon
Heirloom Root Vegetable Hash Yield: 6-10 servings
Yield: 6 servings • 4 cups Brussels sprouts, raw, halved • 1-2 tablespoons olive oil • ¼ cup yellow onion, sliced • 1 tablespoon garlic, sliced thin • 1-2 cups bacon, smoked, thick cut, large dice • Salt, pepper to taste • 2 tablespoons real butter, unsalted • Optional garnish: 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
METHOD OF PREPARATION: 1. Preheat oven to 400 °F for convection setting, (425 °F conventional). 2. In mixing bowl, add oil and cut raw Brussels sprouts. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Place seasoned sprouts on baking sheet and bake in oven until done, about 20-40 minutes (soft yet still with good texture and crispy edges with some dark brown color). Remove from oven. 4. Place large sauté pan on medium heat and render bacon. Add a splash of olive oil to get it going, if needed. Cook until bacon is crispy and golden brown, 5-10 minutes. 5. Add onions to pan and cook until soft, 5-8 minutes. 6. Turn heat to high and add garlic and butter and cook for 1 minute. 7. Add roasted Brussels sprouts to pan and toss all together. Season to taste with salt and pepper. 8. For optional garnishes, add fresh chopped parsley. 9. Serve and enjoy!
CHEF NOTES: • If Brussels sprouts are large, cut in quarters. • Rendering bacon means extracting the bacon fat which adds a lot of flavor to the dish.

Decorate your space with handmade textures such as the modern, maker revival of 1970s macramé and year-round tropical feel of wicker. MACRAMÉ Made through knotting instead of weaving, macramé can add a unique touch in many various ways. Houzz contributor Laura Gaskill suggests incorporating it as nursery decor, plant hangers, wall hangings and modern fiber arts. WICKER According to Houzz contributor Yanic Simard, “the best way to really embrace the luxury-cottage appeal of wicker and rattan is to combine different forms of the two in one space... TIPS FOR DECORATING WITH NATURAL MATERIALS
Houzz contributor Katie Treggiden offers many ways to incorporate natural materials and natural-state timber into your home, including using wood to cover one wall in a home for a pleasing accent wall; featuring your firewood as a striking, stacked display; and mixing different types of wood and different finishes in the same space. “A simple way to incorporate the wood trend is to expose structural wooden beams already present in your home,” Katie says. “Instead of painting them or boxing them in, leave them raw or give them a coat of wax to enrich the tones.”

Do you feel like your all-white room is missing something? Houzz contributor Kelly Porter bets what’s missing is energy. “The best way to add a spark to any space,” she says, “is with bright color.” Kelly says green is one of the easiest colors to live with, looking organic even in its more vivid tones. “When searching for the perfect bright green, think springtime—fresh green grass and newly sprouted leaves,” she says. “These greens have lively undertones that will look comfortable and warm in your white space. Other colors Kelly recommends adding as accents are yellow, royal blue, orange, bluepurple, red-purple and sky blue.
