“Gents” issue, celebrating all things masculine. Of course, there’s Father’s Day on June 16—but there are so many more reasons why it’s great to be a guy this month. With the summer season underway, the long, sunny days can be filled with backyard cookouts, Braves games, camping trips, fishing excursions and so much more. To gather information for this issue, we looked to the experts: the men of Midtown! You might even recognize a few faces. We also teamed up with local actor David Alexander (House of Cards, NCIS: New Orleans, CSI: Cyber, Outcast, Black Lightning, to name a few.) David is also a licensed barber and set a Guinness World Record for shaving the most heads in one hour: 73. David, a co-owner of American Haircuts, brings Midtown the top trends in men's hair for 2019.

Ray Owens, an optician with Thomas Eye Group, thanks a mid-life crisis in the ‘90s for changing his life for the better. Tired of working at his government job, he wanted a new long-term career and encourages others to find what makes them happy. Originally from Atlanta, he returned after being away for 30 years. “I love the diversity. We have so many ethnic groups, so many religions, so many lifestyles; everybody just goes about their business, gets along and we all mesh well,” Ray says. He and his fiancé, Mike Canfield, live with Nolan, their 14-month-old, 15-pound Basenji/ terrier mix. They love to take him for walks and to Piedmont Park, and Mike says he’s the world’s most photographed dog. The couple volunteers with various organizations doing food drives, working in soup kitchens and with other opportunities through church. They feel strongly about assisting others. For example, Ray says that if a homeless person approaches and asks for help, instead of giving him money, he’ll go to a supermarket and buy him food. Ray is happy with his second career and encourages others to take the leap. He says it’s fun helping customers pick out the right frames and then seeing the huge smile on their faces when they put on their new glasses. “Their faces light up, and it’s nice to be able to help people see,” Ray says. He’s also fortunate to work three blocks from home, so he’s home by 5:15 p.m. and has weekends off. This leaves plenty of time to enjoy his family and friends; his dog; and his crossword puzzles, which he admits to being addicted to.

J o h n R o t h e r m e l John Rothermel is the owner of Highland Diamond, a friendly neighborhood jewelry store in Atlanta. Specializing in all types of diamond and color stone jewelry, they can customize, design and repurpose any piece of jewelry. John became interested in jewelry when he started working for a high-end auction house. Wanting to increase his knowledge, he attended the Gemological Institute of America. His career really took off when in 2012, Jake Owen, a friend of his, became a famous country music star and asked for his help in designing an engagement ring. The singer credited John with the design in People Magazine. John is a true entrepreneur, having started several businesses in the last 10 years. “My advice for those thinking about starting their own business is to not hesitate and take the first step as soon as the thought enters their head," he says. "Who cares if it fails; you'll never know unless you try. And I never wanted to live my life looking back wondering if I could have done it or not.” One of his favorite quotes is from Erin Hanson: "There is freedom waiting for you on the breezes of the sky and you ask, ‘What if I fall?’ Oh, but my darling, what if you fly?" Besides jewelry, John has a strong interest in fine wine and bourbon. The jewelry store always has a selection of the finest whiskeys in the world available complimentary for clients to enjoy. He also has an interest in artwork, and the store has a rotating selection of fine art on the walls. “These businesses and interests all flow together cohesively to create a fun and exciting life,” John says. When not in the store, John volunteers his time as an auctioneer at many charitable events around Atlanta.

For 2019, I’m seeing the undercut take a back seat to a shorter, blended and well-groomed variation of the style. The skin fade is a classic men’s taper, only a bit more aggressive with skin-tight sides and a clean side part. High-shine pomades are appropriate for this type of style. I’m also seeing more loose top curls with a short back and sides—a variation on the classic taper but casually styled so the curl takes center stage. A light cream pomade will add separation and shine to this style.

New You NEW LIFE!

Buzz cuts are also a very popular style and are appropriate for most men (especially in warmer months). For the buzz, the hair is clipper cut all over with the sides and back neatly tapered. Some buzz cuts are left a little longer on top and styled with a matte-finish clay for texture. In contrast, I’m also seeing a lot more guys sporting very long layers, often tucked behind the ear for a casual, “rugged poet” vibe. For African-American men, the twisted afro is very hot right now. It’s a little longer and more natural than the tight fades we have seen in the past. Look to Donald Glover/Childish Gambino for inspiration. Beards are still the rage, and the trend is all over the map. Many men are opting for short stubble, and some are going for the long, full option. Either can be outlined on the cheeks and neck

Rose & Rye Cocktail

ARCHITECT MIKE LANTHAM PURCHASED MIDTOWN’S HISTORIC “CASTLE” IN 2010. It is one of the city's most architecturally unique properties. In 2017 Mike and his partner, James Laura, opened Rose & Rye. “All of our decisions have centered on how to bring the historic Castle building, with its celebrated history in the Atlanta arts community, back into public use,” Mike says. The aura and design of the space along with the feel of its history create an alluring appeal. “Dress everyone a little more formally and, at the two-tops at the far end of the bar, it could be 1959,” Mike says. Ambiance is a given, and when the menu is introduced, the experience is enhanced. Lead bartender Ryan Fitch explains the details behind the libations. "Rose & Rye is our namesake drink. It is a classic rye whiskey Old-Fashioned with a drop of rosewater to add a floral component and bring another subtle dimension to a simple, understated classic,” he says. “I would say the drinks are unique to Rose & Rye in the sense that as a historical landmark in Midtown, our menu is derived from the historically relevant drinks of the golden era of bartending: straightforward cocktails that blend the modern with the classic.” The main bar is located in the original office space of Ferdinand McMillian, the veteran who built the castle. There he kept an infamous skeleton to ward off his wife and children from meddling around.
