Rather than expressing just one word, gemstones have the ability to convey full ideas about character. For example, August’s birthstone is peridot. One of the unique features of peridot is that their hue is the same in both natural and artificial light. The ability to maintain the same color integrity led to their association with great beauty, especially in Egyptian culture. Today, peridot can serve as a reminder to live true to yourself, no matter what circumstance you are in. Jeweler Chad White finds gemstones to be a great way to celebrate a milestone in a child’s life. In fact, his shop, Union Diamond, at Ponce City Market has been the venue for his own nieces’ birthday. The girls' eyes sparkled as they were treated like stars. They made their own costume jewelry and learned a little more about each of their birthstones’ qualities. “Each gemstone has a different personality, as do each of our young guests. The full master suite upstairs is used as a guest room while the main floor is enough for all living space. Living near Emory’s campus in Druid Hills creates a walkable neighborhood. The family is able to stroll to Highland Bakery at Emory as well as Kaldi Coffee, the old train depot coffee spot on Emory’s campus, and stop by Lullwater Park along the way to feed the ducks. The renovated carriage house has been in high demand for Emory students and professionals looking for a neighborhood feel near campus.

It just melted my heart, and I couldn’t leave without her! When I went to officially adopt Chai, I brought my niece with me. She fell in love with Pan, and so did I! So Pan joined the family at the same time as Chai, and I’ve had them both for a year. DO YOU GO OUTDOORS? IF YES, WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO GO TOGETHER? No, my cats are indoor fur babies. WHAT IS THE FUNNIEST MEMORY INVOLVING YOUR PETS? Both of my cats are full of personality! When I return home, my cats run in a circle around the house for a good five minutes to welcome me back. I tried a list of Spanish and Latin names, yet none of them fit. My roommate called him Benny from the Bronx and that was it! He responded to it on the first day. HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET YOUR PET? He became somewhat of a rescue when my cousin’s girlfriend couldn’t afford to keep him. I was supposed to receive a portion of the sale when they found a new owner, but I’m glad that never happened. DO YOU GO OUTDOORS? IF YES, WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO GO TOGETHER? Favorite place is the dog park next to freedom parkway off of Highland Ave. WHAT IS THE FUNNIEST MEMORY INVOLVING YOUR PET? Benny lived in an apartment for his first few months until we moved into our home. On the first day Benny got to play in the backyard, he found a toy bone I left for him and started running for joy, in circles, around the yard. He must have made six big laps! HAVE YOU EVER TAUGHT YOUR PET ANY TRICKS? IF SO, WHAT? Not only does Benny know “wait”, but he knows “chill”, and “drop it” as well as “gimme”. 24

Primrose School of Midtown PRIMROSE SCHOOL OF MIDTOWN HAS REACHED MIDTOWN’S YOUNGEST NEIGHBORS FOR SEVEN YEARS, GIVING THEM THEIR FIRST TASTE OF SCHOOL IN A SETTING THAT IS URBAN AND WARM AT THE SAME TIME. This August, the school will resume early education and care schooling in a new location inside Colony Square along with a new turf playground that takes playtime to new heights. Since Primrose School is located inside Colony Square, owner Keri Stoltz had to make some adjustments to the school’s typical format, but the delivery of an accredited, quality educational child care experience is consistent with the Primrose standards of excellence. With the eighth anniversary approaching, she’s found changes usually benefit the students even more. "It's a school in the city, but they don't lack anything that you would have in any other locations," Keri says. When Colony Square started renovations, featuring the addition of an iPic Theaters, Primrose School had to relocate. It didn’t have to go far—just one flight downstairs—and it now has a new rooftop playground. Turf playgrounds feel like grass and have trees for an urban oasis feel. The children at Primrose go outside each day and look forward to water play Wednesdays. One of the former playgrounds on an upper level of Colony Square will be retained and turned into a treehouse escape. The STEM-based curriculum at Primrose uses each playground to expose the children to the wonders of nature. Primrose School of Midtown offers these gardening tips so families can grow together. 1. CHOOSE PLANTS TOGETHER. Take your child to your local garden center or co-op to select plants. To increase the probability that your child will have a positive gardening experience, recommend low-maintenance plants with high success rates for your part of the country, but let her choose a few on her own. 2. GIVE OWNERSHIP. Set aside an area specifically for your child to garden. If he wants to drop an entire packet of seeds in one hole, encourage him to experiment and see what happens. 3. USE SMALL TOOLS. Many manufacturers offer smaller, child-sized gardening tools like trowels, gloves, rakes and hoes. Smaller tools are safer and easier for children to handle, and having their own tools will make them feel more responsible for their contributions to the garden. 4. CELEBRATE! After all of your hard work together, celebrate by harvesting the fruits of your labor. Serve the vegetables for dinner (have your child help pick the menu), decorate the table with cut flowers from the garden, and share garden gifts with friends. 26

Ray wants people to know one of the reasons -- dogs’ bodies are not built to withstand heat as well as humans. People sweat from the skin covering their body, and vapor rising from this moisture is what cools us. But dogs don’t sweat like this. Instead, dogs cool by panting, which is not as efficient. “They transfer heat and cool themselves off with their breathing,” Ray said. Just knowing this fact can save dogs’ lives, Ray said.
