Once you’ve bowled a 300 or screamed “Yahtzee!” from the rooftops, help your guests cool off—both from the heat and some intense competition. Lemonade, the resident summer drink cooler, is even better in frozen form. Try this tart, creamy concoction combined with Jell-O—the food that makes anything a little bit more fun—and hit it out of the park with these after-party treats. PRO TIP: Punch the popsicle stick through a cupcake liner to catch those messy drips!
FROZEN LEMONADE ICE POPS WITH JELL-O WHAT YOU NEED Popsicle molds Popsicle sticks Jell-O (we recommend berry blue and watermelon) 4 cups cold water 1 cup Country Time lemonade drink mix 1 tub (12 ounces) Cool Whip, thawed 1 tablespoon lemon zest
WHAT YOU DO 1. Prepare the Jell-O as directed on the box. Pour into dishes so about 1 inch thick and refrigerate until set. 2. Blend water, lemonade mix, Cool Whip and lemon zest until smooth. 3. When Jell-O is set, remove from dishes and slice into small cubes (they’ll need to fit in the popsicle molds). 4. Fill the popsicle molds about halfway with Jell-O cubes, then fill the remaining space with the blended lemonade mixture. 5. Add popsicle sticks if needed and freeze overnight.

Summertime Skin Care A LOCAL EXPERT OFFERS TIPS TO KEEP SKIN HEALTHY
ARTICLE GRACE HUSETH IT’S HARD TO DETERMINE THE FINE LINE BETWEEN SUN EXPOSURE THAT WILL PROVIDE A GOLDEN GLOW AND EXPOSURE THAT WILL RESULT IN, WELL, MORE FINE LINES AND PREMATURE AGING. Dr. Sumayah Taliaferro of Atlanta Dermatology & Aesthetics provides a few tips for keeping your skin healthy and protected, as well as a crash course in reading the labels of summer skin care products. A+ SUNSCREEN Dr. Taliaferro recommends excellent-grade sunscreen that is broad spectrum, covering both UVA and UVB rays. “Many light sunscreens and day moisturizers contain SPF 15, but the current recommendation by dermatologists is SPF 30 or higher. Sun protection factor refers to how long it takes for the skin to tan, burn or redden when compared to no sunscreen,” she says. Sunscreen report card: Many sunscreens containing zinc may leave a white film, but there are many more elegant sunscreens on the market that leave very little residue. SKIN FOR THE WIN In order to be fully summer-ready, Dr. Taliaferro recommends exfoliating mindfully. Facials and microdermabrasion should replace chemical peels in the warmer months. “Exfoliating lifts more of the superficial skin layers, so it’s important to recognize that they make you more sensitive to the sun,” she says. Major exfoliation and chemical peels, such as those with glycolic acid, should take place a month before prolonged sun exposure. After exfoliation, look for skin moisturizers containing ceramide, a type of lipid that forms a protective layer, and hyalDr. Sumayah Taliaferro

Queen of Cream started off in 2014 with just one ice cream cart, a 100-square-foot kitchen and flavors made 100 percent from scratch. Reigning ice cream queen Cora Cotrim sources local dairy, pasteurizes her own base and uses real ingredients for every flavor. Queen of Cream’s first brick-and-mortar shop in Virginia Highlands opened in 2015 and offers an assortment of treats, coffees and pastries. Flavors rotate each month, but Lavender Honeycomb is a mainstay. The popular flavor is made from organic lavender blooms and accented with honey swirls packed with a crunch of baked honeycomb.

JENI’S SPLENDID ICE CREAMS 1198 Howell Mill Road, Atlanta, Georgia, 404.355.6050, Jenis.com
Founder Jeni Britton Bauer followed her nose into the world of confections. After all, it steered her right in the past, from artist to pastry chef to part-time perfumier. She knew quality and applied it to Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams in 2002, using only whole ingredients and dairy from grass-pastured cows. There’s no room for synthetic flavorings and stabilizers when Jeni’s ice cream is packed with so many ingredients. This summer’s Nectar Honeycomb has an exotic aroma from an Indonesian flavor. The ice cream has notes of vanilla, coriander, clove and honey and is made with ylang-ylang, an essential oil that smells like nectar and spice.

Jake’s former fixer-upper storefront in the Old Fourth Ward is now a popular pit stop along the eastside Atlanta BeltLine. Founder and owner Jake Rothschild saw potential in the turn-of-the-century shack and in his love of ice cream, which he calls “borderline insanity.” Today, Jake’s is famous for Chocolate Slap Yo Mama and Brown Shugah Vanilla, along with more than 200 other ice creams, sorbets, gelatos, sherbets, frozen yogurt and Joyscreams — the shop’s original frozen treat made with Jake’s own natural sweetener. Pay homage to the peach state with a scoop ofFried Peach Piescream made from whole fried hand pies stirred into a sweet cream base. The southern sweet will also be served at B’s Cracklin’ BBQ during the summer months.

PAO LO ’S G E L ATO I TA L I A N O
1025 Virginia Ave. NE, Georgia, 404.607.0055, PaolosGelato.com
Officially, Paolo’s is a gelateria. Unofficially, it’s the best gelato in Atlanta. Italian-born Paolo Dalla Zorza opened Paolo’s in 2000 to bring the taste of his homeland to Virginia Highlands. Not only does the shop serve the creamier, smoother and silkier cousin to ice cream, it also has Italian coffees, candies, cookies and customizable cannolis. Health nut? Take note: Gelato is the ultimate paradox in dairy treats. Milk-based gelato typically contains less than 7 percent fat, and fruit-based gelato has less than 2 percent, making it a more health-conscious choice than traditional ice cream. A go-to gelato is Stracciatella (strotch-E-uhTEL-uh), the Italian version of chocolate chip ice cream. The fior di latte base, or “flower of milk” base, has plenty of chocolate bits. 24

Stephanie and Kyle MacDonald, a husband-and-wife team at Keller Knapp Realty, say good curb appeal is one of the three most important components when selling a home, and it contributes to achieving a higher selling price and a faster sale. “When a buyer arrives at your home, typically 80 percent of their criteria has already been met – location, budget, size, school district — which means you’re only trying to win over the last 20 percent, and the home’s exterior is the first thing the buyer sees,” Stephanie says. “A lasting first impression can go a long way!” Floating fact: Eighty-nine percent of buyers shop online before ever going to see a home in person, and the first picture they usually see is the home’s front exterior, so it’s essential that a home’s curb appeal and landscaping look its best for pictures and showings. Here are their tips for making a home feel rooted in Piedmont abundance. CONTINUED >
