DIRECTIONS Fill a rocks glass (or any unconventional container you have laying around) with desired amount of ice. Add vodka and pumpkin spice liqueur, then top with cereal milk. Cheers!

Thanksgiving—you’d think we would throw down on a big meal and stuff like that, but we have a lot of generous businesses in the community that provide all these giant, elaborate meals for Christmas and Thanksgiving for us. They are a great group of people. HAVE YOU HAD TO GO OUT ON EMERGENCIES OFTEN ON HOLIDAYS? Yes, one of the busier nights is New Year’s Eve. Christmas is usually very mild; Thanksgiving is so-so. HOW DOES YOUR FAMILY FEEL ABOUT YOU BEING AWAY SOME HOLIDAYS? When you’ve been at it so long, the wife and kids get used to it. Our shift starts at 0700. When you get a good rapport with some of the captains and firefighters, if it’s your turn to work Christmas day and your relief man knows you have kids, they may hold over a couple extra hours. DO YOU DECORATE THE STATION? Yeah, we do. We put the big tree up, decorate the station with lights, put the deer up. DO THE NEIGHBORS STOP BY? We get that on a daily basis. A lot of kids want to see the trucks. It feels good to be a part of the community.

Since moving to Midtown in 2017, Union Diamond has become a premier shopping destination. Although the business runs in her family, Nina actually worked in finance before she got the inspiration to make jewelry, while backpacking through India. The colorful stones she saw on her trip motivated Nina to try designing and creating her own jewelry. With success came her search for a manufacturer. Upon being disappointed with the factories she encountered, Nina returned to her native Vietnam to work with her family on putting together a socially conscious design studio. “I think all products should be made in a manner that benefits everyone involved. I would love for my jewelry to bring this message, that people should always be concerned with where the things they purchase come from, who made them, where the materials came from, how long they last, and what will become of it when its life is over,” Nina says via her website. Carrying sustainable jewelry is very important to Union Diamond. “All of her gold is 100 percent recycled; the stonework is ethically sourced. All of that is super important to her. It’s not something she shows in her branding all the time. It’s kind of a secret quality, which is kind of neat," Katie says. Dressed in a myriad of layers and textures, Matthew’s unique sense of style often translates over to his landscape design. “My gardens are all layers and textures. There’s not much in bloom in the garden,” he says. “It’s contemporary yet organic."

Modern is a term that is thrown around a lot in the design ethos. Matthew subscribes to the word when articulating his designs, but not in the way that most would expect. “It’s modern, but not in the cold, stone way that most designers create. For me, modern is a strange beast; you can go 10 yards past it or fall 6 inches short,” he says. “It’s a really fine line.” When asked how he is able to implement such beautiful atmospheres with such limited space, Matthew shared the method to his magic. “Every single detail matters in that thing. If it’s an acre of land, I can cut corners and still make it look immaculate. But when you’re talking 600 to 700 square feet, if that, you have to see everything. There is zero room for error.” Apart from his style and meticulous attention to detail, another reason Matthew is so good at landscape design is that it is literally in his blood. His grandfather was a nurseryman, and he says he was born and raised a nurseryman as well. Matthew recalls many childhood memories growing up around his family farm’s potting sheds and greenhouses, so his knack for outdoor design comes naturally. When you’re so great at something for so long, it is natural to take on new and exciting challenges. After cultivating outdoor enviroments in Atlanta for 20 years, Matthew decided that building and designing spaces wasn’t enough, so a few years back, he began working in real estate to find additional fulfillment. Now, Matthew not only buys and sells the proper home, thanks to his expert-level design background, he also makes the home unique to the owner’s personality and specifications. “Many times you come into a property and the agent says the place has so much potential, but 98 percent of the population has no clue what that potential means,” he says. “What’s so unique about Matthew Klyn Design, Garden ATL and Matthew Klyn and company is that we are a one-stop shop for all of that.” Matthew isn’t alone on this mission; his wife, Bandit, is an architect and real estate agent as well. She works on the logistics of his plans while he conceptualizes, making them a powerhouse couple across the board. “I’m better in the front of the house, she’s better working behind the scenes so we complement each other pretty well when working on all aspects of real estate, home and garden.” CONTINUED >
