Welcome to the Thankful Issue! Can you believe it? November is here, and we’re here for jackets and sweater weather! As a kid around this time, I’d be excited about seeing my cousins and grandparents for Thanksgiving, preparing for Christmas, and traveling to see them! The thought of warm fires, yummy Thanksgiving meals, and being with my favorite people always made way for gratefulness and hope for the future. Gratefulness is a practice, a necessary tool to see the good in the places where it may seem impossible. Being grateful is not necessarily natural; we are all human and have experienced life’s twists and turns! Here’s the thinglook at what is around you and inside of you- you are a gem of inestimable value, and the world needs your gifts! As a parent, this is so obvious to me in the eyes of my now-grown son- I see the greatest of unearned gifts in his being. We are blessed to have friends, loved ones, and chosen families wherever and however we’ve grown. With your 2023 Thankful issue, you’ll read stories of gratitude and experiences shared by our partners, team, and the community. You’ll also see ways life experiences are used to give back in service. From the artist...the exhibit “southern EXPOSURE” captures the essence of living in the South. The works in the exhibition feature sun-drenched afternoons on a beach along the coast of North Carolina to a late day stroll through a neighbor’s garden or local nursery admiring everything in bloom. I refer to my painting style as modern expressionism in which I purposely distort reality to express a particular mood, feeling or thought. Very often, it’s not what I paint, but what I don’t paint that invites the viewer to complete the image in their mind. My aim for each painting is to spark interest and intrigue through color, composition and something unexpected. I work primarily in acrylic and oil paints and often incorporate both graphite and colored pencils. Immerse yourself in the exhibition and EMBRACE SUMMER IN THE SOUTH!

Greater Richmond Transit Company Opens New Downtown Transfer Station In September, The Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) began operations at its new temporary transfer station between East Leigh and East Clay Streets, next to the Richmond courthouse complex. Replacing GRTC’s transfer hub on Ninth Street between Marshall and Leigh Streets, the new station has twelve bus bays, 24-hour lighting, digital information kiosks, and shelter for riders.

This time of the year is when we reflect upon our past and count our blessings. Such blessings come in many forms, and anyone lucky enough to know Midlothian local David Cheatham knew they had a blessing for life. From a beloved husband, father, and grandfather to a brilliant CPA, coworker, and companion, David was and continues to be a fine example to those around him. After suddenly passing from cardiac arrest in May 2022, David’s family arranged a golf tournament, The Dewey Invitational, to celebrate
him while spreading awareness of the subtle and rare signs of cardiac arrest. Together with friends and family, the Cheatham’s raised an incredible $50,000 they graciously donated to the American Heart Association. David's sons, Joe, Michael, and Andrew, along with his work partner, Frank Jenkins, created The Dewey Foundation to raise knowledge about heart disease and other diseases that David cared about. The Dewey Invitational was solely dedicated to
the American Heart Association for its inaugural year. “We want everyone to know the symptoms of a heart attack or stroke and make sure that everyone has a conversation with their doctor about their individual risks,” Joe Cheatham says. “Our goal is to help stop our story from happening to another family.” Among the rolling green hills, streams, ponds, and lakes of Hermitage Golf Club in Goochland County, the local American Heart Association team set up hands-only CPR practice stations on each course, CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . where every golfer saw a demonstration and had a chance to practice compressions. “The Cheatham family incorporated the American Heart Association's mission into their outreach by conveying their personal story and emphasizing the staggering statistic that more than 70% of cardiac arrests outside of hospitals occur in homes," Executive Director at The American Heart Association, Michelle Nostheide, says. “The support from this event, in honor of David, will allow us to continue to expand our reach, with the goal of having one person in every household aware of handsonly CPR.” In honor of its 100-year anniversary, the American Heart Association plans to redouble its efforts in the Richmond area, providing resources to schools, community centers, companies, faith-based groups, and families. “The Cheatham family’s generosity will go a long way in helping us reach that goal,” Michelle says. In remembering his father, Joe shares what a fraternity brother of David recently said: "David seemed to grasp what was happening around him in a unique way. He said a lot without saying anything; he said everything with his eyes. When he spoke, it carried weight. David was simply mature, incredibly intelligent, and led by example. He was someone to watch, learn from, and attempt to emulate how to be a man." He also shares that The Dewey Foundation and Hermitage Country Club plan to hold another tournament in 2024. The Yeatman Group announced in August that they have partnered with the University of Longwood to be the exclusive real estate partner of Longwood Athletics. Kyle Yeatman, owner of The Yeatman Group and alum of Longwood University, opened a second office for his real estate company back in 2022 in the heart of Farmville in an effort to connect more to the community and school. Becoming a partner with the University was the next step in establishing a strong local tie and partnership within Farmville. With this partnership, The Yeatman Group will be the go-to real estate team for the faculty and coaching staff of the University’s Athletic Department, assisting incoming new hires and outgoing move aways with all their real estate needs. COMMUNITY Wishing Well Park, at the corner of Winterfield and Salisbury Roads in Midlothian, is a haven for local families to mingle with community members and for children to play and build friendships. Local volunteers raised funds for and built the original park, which opened in 2006, and continue to maintain the park today. Wishing Well Park has become a central gathering place in Midlothian where locals can enjoy continued events. Friday Fiestas, with food trucks and live music during the fall and spring months, and visits from the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus yearly, are just a few occasions that unite the community. In 2020, Project SWING, the nonprofit that runs the park, began raising funds with the vision of an entirely revitalized park: a beautiful neighborhood destination accessible to children of all ages and abilities. Since then, volunteers have organized events from a Garden Party in a resident's backyard to community bake sales and a Fall Gala held at Salisbury Country Club. Local eateries and bakeries, including Midlothian Chef's Kitchen, Gelati Celesti, Oh and I Bake, Front Porch Cakes and Eatery, and Oatmeal Cream Pie Company, have all made delicious contributions to these events in support of this community cause. Updates to the park since 2020 include a new gated aluminum fence, drainage mitigation, and a new swing set with universal and accessible options. CONTINUED >

At last year's Fall Gala, the inclusive nature of the project was incredibly compelling and brought the community together to raise funds for new play equipment and structures, including accessible elements. "This has truly been a community endeavor," Director of Wishing Well Park Rebecca Adams Hollis says. "Episcopal Church of the Redeemer gave the land for this community park, local parents built the park that we use today, and dozens of generous community members and local businesses have come together to make a new and accessible community park possible." Community partners, including the Redeemer Youth Group, Salisbury Garden Club, and the local Boy Scouts, have worked to help beautify the space. Thanks to the generosity of event and park sponsors including the Salisbury Homeowners Association, West End Facial Plastic Surgery, Salisbury Mother's Club, Craig Via Realty and Relocation, The Bloomfield Foundation, Marco's Pizza, Brittany Heare of Providence Hill Real Estate and Andrew Heare of Thurston and Heare Insurance, Shannon Milligan, RVA Hometeam, Toast New American GastroPub, Becky McNeer, Realtor, and Boone Residential, among many others, Project SWING is poised, contingent on contractor availability, to break ground on Phase I of the project before the end of 2023. Phase I will include a wheelchair-accessible pathway, a universal spinner, and various play equipment for children of all ages.
