I can’t believe it’s August! As we’re enjoying the last few weeks without a school schedule and maybe that last family vacation, we’re preparing for the new season ahead with kids, grandkids, and yes, even our pets. August means a lot to me because, well, I was born in August and I always got excited about having friends and family members near for celebrations. On those weekends, it was my dad’s grilled hamburgers with cheese, lettuce and tomatoes on top, and my mom’s fried okra and blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream that made me a happy camper. Moreover, those were the days where we would all unwind and relax together, complete with our family dog who was waiting with intense delight for any morsel of food to drop to the floor. Welcome to your Kids and Pets Issue, Midlothian! This issue was a lot of fun putting together for you. Check out amazing dog trainers, nonprofits with a heart for helping others through service animals, healthy food for kids on the go, and exciting destinations to share with your friends and families. We hope you’ll still do lots of swimming, hiking, and biking as well as seeing the latest thriller movie, going to museum exhibits, and enjoying the fireflies in the backyard as you grill YOUR family’s favorite foods. Meanwhile, stay cool and hydrated! We hope you’ll sit back and enjoy this issue, and know that we’re excited for the changes headed our way in Midlothian as we continue to grow and be one of the best places to call home!

Upper Magnolia Green Rezoning Approved by Chesterfield County Leaders
The Upper Magnolia Green rezoning cases have been approved by the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors setting the stage for numerous future development projects. Upper Magnolia West comprises of over 1,700 acres and will be used for a technology village. The county plans to focus on employment-generating uses, such as advanced manufacturing, research and development, and offices. Chesterfield Communications and Media Receives Six Hermes Creative Awards The Chesterfield County Department of Communications and Media was recently awarded six honors in the 16th Annual Hermes Creative Awards. This international competition, sponsored by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, is for creative professionals that honors the messengers and creators of the information revolution. There were 6,500 entries submitted from 28 different counties in this year’s competition. Chesterfield was proud to place in every category they entered.

WHY IS THE CLASSICAL CONDITIONING METHODOLOGY USED BY YOUR TRAINERS SUPERIOR TO OTHER STYLES? “Classical Conditioning differs to most other training methodologies in that it does not rely on the dog’s desire to comply with a command. This can be most beneficial in recalling a dog in a moment where things get chaotic or in a situation where the dog may get injured. We condition the dog to respond to commands without thinking about it. This could potentially save a dog’s life in certain situations.” AT WHAT AGE SHOULD A DOG BEGIN TRAINING? “You can start teaching a puppy to be obedient as early as 8 weeks, which is around the time most puppies get a new home. However, just like a human child when they reach adolescence, when a puppy reaches the age of 6 to 8 months and starts to make its own decisions, the training methods change.”

WHERE DO YOUR TRAININGS TAKE PLACE? “Our programs start with in-home training to develop a strong foundation in obedience. We then move the dog and owner to group classes in a park-like setting to further challenge the dog with distractions. This is usually where a dog’s capabilities improve almost exponentially.” WHAT DO DOGS ENJOY ABOUT YOUR PROGRAMS? “Structure is the main thing missing from most homes with dogs. In most cases the dog is looking for a true pack leader but there isn’t one. This creates anxiety in the dog’s mind. We implement structure and a pack hierarchy which calms the dog. Once this happens, training becomes a job to the dog, and as they progress their confidence builds. A confident dog is a happy dog.” DO YOU CONSIDER THE DOG OR DOG OWNER YOUR PRIMARY CLIENT? “Both. In most homes dogs are considered a family member, and we treat them as such. When we train in the home, we are training the dog and the owner. The owner learns how to train their dog and their dog learns the pack hierarchy. The human just pays the bill!!!” HOW DO YOU MEASURE SUCCESS? “When you see that the dog really understands what you are asking and complies without delay, that is success. When the client realizes they can communicate with their dog and have control when needed, and you see the look of pride on their face, that is the ultimate measure of success.” DO YOU WORK WITH DOGS THAT HAVE ANXIETY OR PROBLEMS WITH AGGRESSION? “Absolutely. Those dogs can be the most challenging to work with, but also the most rewarding. There are multiple issues that cause anxiety in dogs. Most anxiety is relieved with structure

and a pack hierarchy. Another is the human’s unconscious confirmation of a dog’s negative behaviors. We create structure in the home and let all of our dogs know where they stand in the family pack. This will generally relieve most anxiety that manifests in a dog.” “A highly aggressive dog is another matter. Many dogs are euthanized due to severe aggression. We want to do our best to avoid that and will evaluate the dog to see if we think we can help it. You can never train aggression out of a dog, but you can certainly manage it through a strong pack hierarchy and strong obedience training.” WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT YOUR WORK? “I’ve been a dog lover all my life… There are fewer things better than hanging out with dogs on a daily basis. There are so many dogs that need help and to be able to see a dog improve week to week is an amazing feeling. One of the first things most kids say when they come home from a long day at school is, “Can I have a snack?” All that learning and play works up an appetite! Finding healthy options that nourish kids’ growing bodies without turning Mom or Dad into a short-order cook can be a challenge, though. Laurel Otey of Layered Living, a holistic wellness practice serving parents and their children, believes it is important to teach children healthy mealtime and snack habits from as young an age as possible. She
encourages her own three kids to practice helping themselves with a list of parent-approved snacks that even most elementary schoolers can make with little to no assistance. Giving kids the opportunity to practice making their own snacks gives them a sense of autonomy and builds lifelong skills. Yogurt with Berries INGREDIENTS • Individual serving cup of Silk Vanilla Almondmilk Dairy-Free Yogurt Alternative (or your favorite dairy free or Greek yogurt) • Fresh blueberries • Kind Healthy Grains Granola (optional) DIRECTIONS Yogurt and berries make a delicious and nutritious snack for any age. If you’re using an individual serving cup, then simply open the container, throw in a handful of washed berries and dig in! You may also sprinkle a little granola on top for some added crunch. Skip the “kids’ yogurts” as these tend to have even more added sugars than the adult versions.
Veggies and Hummus INGREDIENTS • Sabra Roasted Pine Nut Hummus (or your favorite flavor) • Bell peppers, carrots, and cucumber DIRECTIONS Slice vegetables into sticks. Kids should use a silicone knife or a parent-helper. Spoon hummus into a small bowl (or eat it out of the container). Use your veggies to scoop hummus and enjoy! Alternately, pre-slice assorted veggies and store them in your fridge to make easy grab-and-go options. Mix it up with other vegetables, such as raw broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, and cherry tomatoes.
Avocado Toast INGREDIENTS • 1 slice Canyon Bakehouse Gluten Free 7-Grain Bread (or your favorite whole grain bread), toasted • 1/2 ripe avocado, sliced • Sea salt, to taste (optional) DIRECTIONS Toast bread. Be careful when removing- it’s hot! Slice avocado using a silicone kids’ knife or parent-helper. Top toast with avocado slices. Alternately, scoop avocado with a spoon and “smash” on top. Younger kids, especially, love this technique! Enjoy on its own or with a little sea salt sprinkled on top.

Turkey Roll-Up INGREDIENTS • Applegate Naturals Oven Roasted Turkey Breast • Sir Kensington’s Classic Mayonnaise • Sliced bell pepper, any colors DIRECTIONS Spread mayonnaise on your favorite sliced sandwich meat. Slice bell peppers and line 2-3 strips across the middle of the meat. Then, roll it all up to make a breadless sandwich-style wrap. Healthy alternates to mayonnaise include hummus, guacamole, or mustard. Pre-slice bell peppers, cucumbers, or other veggies and store them in your fridge to make easy grab-and-go additions to these roll-ups. Kids that want to practice their knife skills should use a silicone knife to prevent injuries. Some parental assistance may be needed for younger children.
Trail Mix INGREDIENTS • Raw or roasted nuts: cashews, pistachios, almond, pecans, cashews, Brazil nuts, walnuts • Raw or roasted seeds: pumpkin, sunflower • Dried fruit: plantain chips, apricots, black and/or gold raisins, shredded coconut DIRECTIONS Combine any assortment of nuts, seeds, and dried fruit in a small bowl or snack sized Ziplock bag. Nuts and seeds, especially, are very filling so a reasonable serving size is about a handful.
Sliced Apples with Peanut Butter INGREDIENTS • 1-2 Tablespoons peanut, almond, or sunflower butter • 1 apple, sliced DIRECTIONS Slice 1 apple, removing the core and seeds. Scoop peanut, almond, or sunflower butter into a small bowl. Arrange apple slices around the edges of the bowl or on a separate plate. Use apple slices to scoop and enjoy! Most dogs know how to sit, lie down, and even fetch a ball in the park. But what if your dog could fetch your phone during an emergency? Or pick up your keys from under a chair? Canine Companions is a nonprofit organization that provides highly trained service dogs for adults, children, and veterans with disabilities. Canine Companions puppies start their journey by being raised by volunteer puppy raisers for about 18 months before they head off to professional training where they are taught over 40 commands, including how to open doors and pick up dropped items. Although Canine Companions provides service dogs to their recipients free of charge, it can cost over $50,000 to raise and train one service dog. Help “give a dog a job” this October by participating in the 4th annual Give a Dog a Job 5k on October 1st hosted by the Canine Companions Old Dominion Chapter, and presented by McGeorge Toyota. All of the money raised will go directly to Canine Companions to help train and place life-changing service dogs with their recipients. “Dogs are at the heart of so many here at McGeorge. Loving owners from both our staff and customers regularly bring in their loved ones for a visit. It always puts a smile on each and every one of our faces. So when the opportunity presented itself to work with Canine Companions there was no hesitation. They are doing amazing work of helping those in need of a service dog, and we want to do our part to help them continue to serve,” said Courtney Taylor, Digital Marketing Manager at McGeorge Toyota. This family and pet-friendly 5k run, walk, and roll begins at 9 a.m., and is once again hosted by the incredible staff at the Main Line Brewery located in Scott's Addition in Richmond, Virginia.
