LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy May, Midlothian!
May 2022 PUBLISHER
Aaron Swart | aaron.swart@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Mary Ellin Arch | maryellin.arch@citylifestyle.com
Now that tax season is over, most of us can breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy the beauty around us as flowers continue to bloom and lawns become fully green and dense. As we look to Mother’s Day, we’re reminded of the maternal influences in our lives. My grandmother, Jane, was one of my greatest influences. She taught me the Lord’s Prayer and how to play cards, always gave me her time and attention, introduced me to the water and how wonderful swimming is for the body and soul, and loved me fiercely. She laughed, cried, and loved life without reservation, and those qualities also showed through her watercolor paintings and support of the arts. I carry her with me in my heart. It’s my hope that you’ve had and continue to have women in your life who show you strength, dignity, intelligence, and love. We’re so excited to bring you the 2022 Ladies’ Issue! From magical destinations where dreaming and fairies are welcomed, to amazing women who’ve made an impact and dare to influence the future, we're packed full of experiences and adventures where women are truly influencing our community and enjoying the journey. To every mother and child this month, we wish you a Happy Mother’s Day! Last, but certainly not least, we bid farewell to our amazing editor of nearly 3 years, Mary Ellin Arch. In her time here as editor, she has reported and written some of Midlothian Lifestyle’s biggest stories: personality profiles of Miss America’s Camille Schrier and NBC12’s Anthony Antoine, feature articles about physical therapy using horses and the work of the Colorado Fund for Muscular Dystrophy, and most recently, this year’s 2022 real estate outlook. Mary Ellin also compiled last summer’s issue-wide feature on the Richmond West Beverage Trail showcasing 11 local wineries, breweries, and distilleries, and she was among our featured local women in last year’s Ladies’ issue, where we learned her weakness is chai tea lattes and chocolate chip cookie dough. In many ways, Mary Ellin is a mom to me, and I dare not ever relinquish the relationship I have with her, for she is a gem of inestimable value, and I am and always will be grateful for her faith, journalistic prowess, kind heart, and overwhelming sense of service to every commitment she makes. Mary Ellin, we look forward to seeing what God has in store for your retirement!

Oceano Opening in Crab Louie's Space Midlothian residents who have wondered what's happening to the old Crab Louie's have their answer: Oceano is moving in. Oceano will be a "seafood-heavy concept," according to reporting by Richmond BizSense, but also will "be leaning toward Italian with pastas and other Italian fare," new owners Maria and Michael Oseguera told BizSense. The restaurant can seat about 110 and offers a full bar. Plans call for only dinner to start but to add lunch eventually.
Friday Cheers Returns This Month Friday Cheers, Hardywood Park
presented by Craft Brewery,
returns May 6 for its 37th season as Richmond’s longest running concert series and the city’s largest event of its kind. Season passes and individual tickets are available now. The only summer concert series held along the James River, on picturesque Brown's Island, Friday Cheers showcases emerging headliners and favorite regional bands. Produced by Venture Richmond Events. Chesterfield County Named a Best Place to Work The Richmond Times-Dispatch and TopWorkplaces.com have chosen Chesterfield among its 87 honorees as one of Central Virginia’s best places to work. In the 9th-annual awards, Chesterfield County ranked among just four “mega” employers (organizations with 900 employees or more). This comes after the county made Top Workplace’s best in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Practices list in the fall, and placed among its Top 100 employers out of over 300 organizations with 2,500+ employees throughout the country earlier this year.
Summer LLI Catalog Available The Summer Session Catalog of The Lifelong Learning Institute in Chesterfield will be released April 29. The summer session of on-site and online courses will run from May 9-Aug. 26. BEST MOTHER’S DAY EV ER!
Midlothian Lifestyle brought some of our favorite women together for brunch at Cameo Cakery & Cafe, where they feasted on sweet and savory creations handmade by Christina Miller and her staff. We asked them about their favorite Mother’s Day and their ideas for the perfect gift or celebration. Here’s what they told us.

Memorable Mother’s Day Gifts
“My firstborn was only 4 months old,” says Ashley Sill, regional director of Gather RVA. “I spent the entire day with her and my husband gifted me with a necklace with her initials.” “When I was a child, I got my mom a packet of flower seeds,” recalls Crystal Yi of Renee’s Auto Care. “Twenty-five years later, she still tends the flowers that grew from those seeds. It means so much to me!” “I took my parents to Denver,” says Rhonda Howlett Carroll, founder and principal broker of Clocktower Realty Group. “My mom had never flown and neither of my parents had seen the Rockies. We went to a Broncos game with tickets on the 50-yard line. We still talk about it!” “My girls usually make me breakfast in bed and go to church with me,” says Courtney Perini, an agent with Greer Jones Properties. “They write the sweetest cards!”
“When I was younger, I got my mom a nameplate necklace that said ‘Mom’,” says Crystal. “She wore it every day. Last year, I got nameplate necklaces for all the women in my family with their names written in Korean. I wanted to recognize them as individuals and let mom know that our Korean culture is important to me.” “When I was little, I made my mom cards,” says Navonna Hart, owner/broker, Century 21 @ Home. “Before she passed, she gave some of them back to me. I knew how much they meant to her because she kept them all.” “My boys made me a raised garden bed,” says Rhonda. “I love gardening and I really love a thoughtful gift, so it was perfect.”

Our women agree it’s a mistake to ignore the day and encouraged some act of kindness toward a friend or family member suffering this sort of loss. Keep in mind that if you’ve never lost a child, you really can’t relate nor should you try. “I reach out by text,” says Laurel Otey of Layered Living. “I can’t make this time easier for them, but it helps to feel acknowledged and know that the support is available.” “I lost a good friend in college,” says Courtney. “I send her mother flowers each year and reach out to her to talk about her daughter.” Rhonda had a similar experience, losing her best friend when they were 19: “I still keep in touch with his Mom (and Dad). I try to keep it simple: a card, flowers, a visit. You just need to let them know you’re there for support.” “My best friend and I each suffered a miscarriage in the months prior to Mother’s Day (a year apart) before our firstborns,” says Ashley. “We spent time holding each other’s hands through it, knowing we were still mothers even with the loss.”
Men and Mother’s Day Our women agree that men should help their children make Mother’s Day special. For their own moms, our women suggested a gift certificate she’d enjoy using, a meal at her favorite restaurant, and time with her. “A fun gift for any mom would be a re-creation of an old photo from when he/she was younger,” says Ashley. “Time given is the best gift,” says Navonna. “My best Mother’s Days are when my boys (grown men now) invite me to go hiking.” “My husband is a super-involved dad and proactive co-parent year-round, and he helps the kids make their cards and handmade gifts for me,” says Laurel. “Crafting is not an activity he enjoys, so him dedicating time to this is definitely a sign of his love and appreciation for me!”

Strong, Stylish, and Successful THESE REMARKABLE ENTREPRENEURS ARE MAKING THEIR MARK IN THE FIELDS OF FINANCIAL, FITNESS AND PHYSICAL WELLNESS
Heidi Jenkins: A Young “Old Soul” You might do a double-take to hear 28-year-old Heidi Jenkins call herself an “old soul.” But listen to her story and you’ll soon agree the description is apt. She landed her current job with OnPoint Financial Management through sheer chance. “We worked out next to each other at the gym,” Heidi says of OnPoint CEO Michael Todd. Michael needed marketing help during COVID, and Heidi came on part time, ultimately leaving her fulltime job as a general manager elsewhere to become OnPoint’s chief marketing officer. OnPoint specializes in wealth building and works with clients in Richmond and Beverly Hills, California. Heidi has always been a leader, inspired by her dad, who was captain of a fire department; her mom, a MedStar flight nurse; and her sister, an ICU nurse in Kentucky. Heidi’s leadership began early: head of the safety patrol in 5th grade, drum major of the high school marching band, president of two college organizations and on the executive board of a third. For Heidi, leadership “has never had anything to do with having power. It has always been about helping people find their passion.” At 18, Heidi was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma. “Luckily, it’s a curable cancer,” she says. What happened after surgery and chemo is a textbook example of Heidi’s resiliency. “The day I got my mediport removed was my first day of college. My parents drove me there straight from the hospital.” Her hair grew back slowly. “All through freshman and sophomore years at James Madison, I was known as “the bald girl,” she smiles. “I refused to wear a wig. In those two years I wore a wig one time; my mom made me, for a wedding.” Cancer at 18 is life-changing, and true to her nature, Heidi has seized opportunities to mentor others with cancer. “It’s isolating,” she shares. “You lose a year or two of your childhood. Facing mortality at that age, you grow up quickly. It’s not even the physical sickness that’s most challenging. It’s the mental challenge of being so far ahead of your peers, and then you’re back in the real world, with kids partying, and you’re so over it. “I’ve always been an old soul,” she adds. “I’m a little old lady stuck in a young woman’s body. My ideal Friday is being home with my animals, a book and a cup of tea.” Her animals are Winnie-the-Pooh, a 3-year-old golden retriever, and Lenny, an 8-year-old rabbit. “My parents refer to me as ‘Snow White’ – animals have always been drawn to me.” People are drawn to Heidi, too. “I’m most proud of my relationship building. I’ve been able to establish a networking system and it’s filled with women,” says Heidi, who specialized in marketing and gender studies at JMU, and who manages OnPoint’s business development and client relationships. “Look at women building their own businesses – they need and want to have autonomy over the money they’re making. Their lives not dependent on someone else’s success.” And Heidi looks forward to what’s next. In a few weeks Heidi and husband Jack, a Realtor, will celebrate their recent marriage. They’ve just bought a home and look forward to starting a family. “I’ve experienced more before 30 than most people have in their lifetimes,” Heidi says. “But I still have so much to learn.” onpointfinancialmanagement.com

Donna Suro: Living Her Passions Donna Suro’s passion found her at Mary Baldwin University, and never let go. “I started teaching aerobics freshman year and ended up running the aerobics department,” she recalls. A few years later, after transferring to and graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University, Donna set aside her nuclear medicine degree to work in marketing and teach aerobics. At 21, she became one of the youngest Jazzercise franchisees. Soon after, she opened her first gym in Richmond’s Midtown. Her goal was to teach Jazzercise while renting space for yoga, personal training, and other disciplines. “I tried to do a boutique fitness model, but big box was still the rage,” says Donna. She ended up teaching yoga and personal training as well until it “just became too much” - by then, Donna was married, mother of one, and pregnant. She closed her gym. The exercise bug just wouldn’t die. “I still taught,” she said. “I became a Les Mills junkie – Body Pump, Body Step, all the Bodies.” Then, 2015. “I was innocently sitting at my computer and got an email about the first-ever indoor cycling franchise,” Donna recalls. “The flame was lit.” The franchise was CycleBar. Donna found a business partner and spent a year finding a location – Short Pump’s Greengate plaza. It wasn’t even developed in 2016, so Donna started planning the opening to fill the wait time. In the “never a dull moment” department, just weeks later Donna was diagnosed with breast cancer. “I thought, I just signed my life away with a lease for 10 years,” she recalls, but “the timing was pretty perfect, actually. I finished my last chemo in March 2017, and opened in May 2017.” CycleBar proved popular. “We were hitting the three-year mark when Covid hit,” she recalls. “We rented out bikes and did virtual classes. I was the first franchisee in CycleBar to do this.” The studio reopened in July 2020 and after a slow start due to distancing requirements, quickly recovered. Covid also inspired Donna to install a hospital-grade air filtration system at both locations – CycleBar opened in Midlothian in October 2021. Now five years cancer free, Donna remains a fitness fanatic. “I tried Orange Theory recently and loved it,” she says. She teaches several cycling classes a week and runs the two locations with a staff of about 50, including her daughter, who works part-time at Greengate. “I might start putting my son to work here,” she laughs. Besides fitness and CycleBar, Donna is passionate about her kids (“my main passion”), travel (a trip to Italy is planned this summer) and just recently, meditation. “One reason I’ve loved exercise is how it helps to manage anxiety – it’s such a release,” says Donna. A retreat helped her reach advanced levels of meditation. “It’s been life changing. I can meditate for an hour and a half, and have an app that tracks my heart rate and helps me stay in ‘coherence,’ which is what you try to achieve in meditation.” Donna’s passions extend to her staff. “My staff is passionate about their causes, and I donate the studios to help,” she says. In addition to supporting official CycleBar charities, Donna’s studios regularly host private fundraisers, recently raising money for the Powhatan Christmas Mother. “We love working with the community,” she says. cyclebar.com/location/midlothian

Dr. Mariana Keener: Physician, Runner, Traveler Dr. Mariana Keener loves travel and running, and found an elegantly simple way to combine the two. She travels with one or more of her three siblings to different cities, runs in marathons there, and then stays on after the event to explore the area. With this approach, she’s visited Toronto, Minneapolis, Ft. Lauderdale, and Orlando (the Disney marathon); she’s also run the Richmond marathon for the past eight years in addition to about a dozen half-marathons. “After a marathon, you don’t feel as bad eating the way you do on vacation,” she laughs. Dr. Keener enjoys a healthy dose of work-life balance often uncommon in the field of medicine due to her selection of the family practice specialty and her partnership with Dr. Kenneth Qiu in EuDoc, a direct primary care practice in Midlothian. EuDoc doesn’t bill health insurance but instead charges a monthly membership fee. In return, patients get 30- to 60-minute appointments and a suite of additional benefits, including after-hours access to doctors who know them all individually. Dr. Keener says she learned in residency, operating under a traditional “bill-the-insurance” system, that she wanted to get to know her patients and families, and provide continuity of care. “You can’t really get to know a person in 15 minutes, let alone diagnose and treat them,” she says. “By cutting out insurance, I can give better care to patients.” Along the way she educates her patients about the health insurance industry. “They can see the value and they can save money this way,” she says. She and Dr. Qiu do recommend high-deductible or catastrophic health coverage, for illnesses and injuries requiring surgery and hospitalization. Dr. Keener is a Doctor of Osteopathy (or D.O.), trained the same way as M.D.s but with added training in Osteopathic Manipulation Therapy (OMT). This mix of massage, physical therapy and a bit of chiropractic medicine looks at the body holistically and involves spinal and muscular manipulation that facilitates healing. OMT begins with a complete patient evaluation and exam, followed by shorter visits for hands-on treatment. “The way a person walks can really tell you a lot about how they’re compensating, where they’re weak,” Dr. Keener says. Follow-up visits taper off to monthly or every other month as patients heal and gain strength. When she’s not doctoring, traveling, or running, she spends time with her parents and siblings, all but one of whom lives in Virginia (one sibling is in Florida). She also loves hanging out with Kona, her 55-pound standard poodle. “I’m a certified dog mom,” she laughs. “He generates a lot of attention as we walk around the Fan and Meadow and Byrd parks.” eudoc.me

Women, Myth, and Magic CREATING A BRAVE NEW WORLD AT LEFAY COTTAGE AT LITTLE WASHINGTON

Welcome to Sally-Anne Andrew’s LeFay Cottage at Little Washington. A world apart, this enchanting, quintessential faerie-tale cottage is secluded, intimate, exquisitely appointed with a disarming elegance. Chic without pretense. Not-so-shabby yet persuasively casual and inviting. Set on five acres of a former Christmas tree farm amid the allure of Blue Ridge hills as old as time, the land itself exudes mystery, magic, and mysticism. LeFay Cottage creates an enchanted world, imploring guests to imagine, to believe, and perchance to dream of a different life. Morganna the Faerie Queen of love, nature, joy, power, resilience, and healing reigns over Sally-Anne‘s LeFay queendom. As Sally-Anne engagingly tells it, Morganna is a shapeshifter, elemental of the natural world. Her role is to guide the next chapter of the LeFay story – fostering personal and global growth via introspection, empowerment, and philanthropy, tapping into myth and magic in order to facilitate inner peace and joy. Sally-Anne grew up in Great Britain with faerie folklore and old English tales of mythical creatures and shapeshifters who could transform themselves. It’s these cherished stories of transformation and healing from within that have further inspired her to expand her unique brand of boutique-cottage wedding experiences, with Viktoria, a talented art photographer from Viktoria Art Photography, to the fantastical realm for Faeriecore and Cottage Core enthusiasts.
“LeFay Cottage is a place born of dreamers, magic makers, caretakers and yes, farmers whose purpose is to uplift the world through creating magic,’’ says SallyAnne. “Our new Morganna collection of home goods and wellness products for the mind, body, and spirit guide you to channel your inner Queen. Experiences at our Love Lavender Farm transport you to elevated heights of transitive magic and empowerment.” Experience Packages from Sally-Anne’s new Morganna Collection are designed to uplift and enlighten while encouraging a reconnection with the inner spirit. Each experience has been thoughtfully curated for one’s unique reign as Queen. Bespoke lavender thrones, diamond crowns, crystal wands to make a wish, and wellness products from the Love Lavender Farm have been imagined in the exclusive new product line.

DEAR YOUNGER ME TWO SUCCESSFUL WOMEN OFFER WORDS OF WISDOM TO BELOVED YOUNG LADIES JUST STARTING OUT IN LIFE
ARTICLE BY POLLY WHITE & BARB LAMB PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACQUI DEPAS
P O L LY W H I T E , TO H E R G R A N D DAU G H T E R My lovely Madi, This is a quote from one of my speeches to female businesspeople: “As an adult, I have learned not to hold much significance in what others think of me. If I am good with my God and with myself, that is enough. We both have high standards.” I am not saying that we don’t care about people. We care deeply, but we do not let other people’s opinions dictate the vision and values we hold for ourselves. In today’s social-media-influenced, fake-and-filtered world, you need to develop your own mantra. What are the guiding principles that will help you navigate your future? Madi, you are a beautiful spirit, and a child of our Lord. Hear His voice. I understand it is difficult to stand apart as a youth, to see beyond what others tell you. I pray you find His truth for you and then own it. I love you, Miss Polly Polly White owns and manages seven Gather coworking locations in Virginia along with her husband, Doug. workatgather.com

The Feminine Touch Joanna Gragnani Objects Arsenal “When I am making pottery, I imagine organic forms, rising up from the earth.” Joanna Gragnani got hooked on clay in her freshman year in high school. She studied art history at the University of Virginia and interned at the clay studio at Richmond’s Visual Arts Studio. Now working out of her space at Blue Dot Studios, she focuses on hand-building organic forms. She teaches hand-building at the Visual Arts Center and Hand/Thrown Studio, and she also leads mobile clay classes around Richmond in customers’ homes and businesses. objectsarsenal.com

Andrea Johnson Karmalita’s Marshmallows “We are a nut-free business and strive to create products that are a bit safer, with hopes to one day allow those with allergies to enjoy our confections without worry.” Who says art has to be painting or sculpture or in some way gallery-worthy? Andrea Johnson makes her art out of food – marshmallows, to be specific. Karmalita’s (named after Andrea’s daughter) is a handcrafted marshmallow and s’more pop-up business in RVA. Voted among the top three of RVA’s Best Pop-Up, Karmalita’s creates artisan s’mores to order and provides marshmallow confections and gourmet hot chocolate. Customers find Karmalita’s marshmallows to be “softer, more flavorful, a little less sweet, and creamy when toasted.” karmalitas.square.site
Meg Morrison Meg Morrison Design Meg Morrison recently moved from woodturning to working with clay. “My pottery pieces are made with a hand building technique called coil building. I work with a gritty sculpture clay that feels a bit like plunging my hands into wet beach sand. After sculpting the piece in my home studio, I finish it at the Visual Arts Center. First, I tint clear or white glaze with bold colors I blend from pigment powders called Mason stains. Then after the work is fired I sandblast and treat my vase or sculpture with mineral oil to give it a buttery soft finish.” megmorrison.com

Women Helping Women Junior League of Richmond supports our community through volunteerism; check out its Book & Author event this month ARTICLE PROVIDED BY JUNIOR LEAGUE OF RICHMOND | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACQUI DEPAS
The Junior League of Richmond is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through effective action and trained volunteer leadership. Founded in 1926 with 59 women, JLR now boasts over 600 members representing women from all walks of life. Our shared passion for serving those in need and supporting the Richmond community has united us these past 96 years, through depressions, wars, cultural revolutions, and pandemics. We're excited for what the next 96 years will bring! JLR serves through our current scope of Women Helping Women, partnering with other organizations where collaboration makes sense. For example, JLR works with Shalom Farms and the YWCA to connect women served by the YWCA with local produce while providing recipes and kitchen equipment to build confidence as they transition from domestic violence shelters to independent housing. Our members provide, on average, over 2,000 hours of volunteering annually, serving more than 13,000 community members. to economically disadvantaged women for professional advancement. Our mobile store often travels directly to communities, recognizing that women often work hours that make regular shopping difficult, and that transportation can be a challenge. Members often cite their interest in making connections with like-minded women as their initial motivation for joining JLR. However, it’s the community engagement and ability to support other women that drives their desire to become leaders and continue to make the community the best it can be. This month, JLR's 77th annual Book & Author Event is raising funds to support its work, and JLR gratefully acknowledges Dominion Energy, the event's presenting sponsor. The event takes place in person and virtually on May 12 at Tuckahoe Women's Club, 4215 Dover Road, Richmond. Festivities begin with a cocktail hour at 6:30 p.m. (including a virtual wine tasting in partnership with Richmond-based RichWine), followed by the event at 7:30.
