LIFESTYLE LETTER

April is for Exploring!

April 2022 PUBLISHER

Aaron Swart | aaron.swart@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Mary Ellin Arch | maryellin.arch@citylifestyle.com

Spring is here for sure, and with it the budding flowers and the smells of blooming trees and freshly-cut lawns. While there’s spring cleaning and things to be done, there’s always an itch to get away. As a kid, I loved traveling to see my grandparents. I lived in the Midwest, so it truly was a hike to the Carolinas to see them. During my visits in the warmer months, we would spend a week in the mountains of Virginia at their cabin they named “Windsong.” This was indeed a place of magic, one that always allowed me to explore. Between the hills, wildflowers, rocks, bugs and animal life, and the mountain air filling my lungs with sweet-smelling flowers, this was a sacred spot for me. Of course, each visit included dining at Shatley Springs, a wonderful family-style restaurant that served fried chicken with biscuits and gravy that were simply heaven on earth. To this day, I prefer the mountains, hiking, and generally enjoying temperatures below 73 degrees. April is a great month to explore for ourselves and with our families. In this year’s Explore issue, we’ve got much in store for you - from family activities to local wineries and getaway cottages to some helpful food choices and an excursion to Nashville, we’ve got ideas galore! There’s so much to do and see, and the weather is perfect for your next adventure! As cover artist Geraldo Netto entitled his acrylic “Uncharted,” we, too, have the opportunity to navigate a new path or tradition with ourselves and our families this season in exploring the world around us. I challenge you to be bold and to find things both near and far, and to always remember that there’s a lot right here in our back yards.

Chesterfield’s Triple-AAA Bond Rating Reaffirmed The nation’s top three ratings agencies recently reaffirmed Chesterfield County’s triple-AAA bond rating, solidifying Chesterfield’s position among a small group able to demonstrate exceptional fiscal management. Only about 1% of counties nationwide hold the AAA credit rating from the three agencies: Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s, and Fitch Ratings. The county has earned a triple-AAA rating every year since 1997. The rating ensures Chesterfield can borrow funds for capital needs at the lowest interest rates available. chesterfield. gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=2578

LO G A N A N D BECKY PICKELS Logan and Becky own and operate Wellness Warriors, a holistic health business. Children: Makenzie, 10, and Lexie, 8. We love walks, biking, soccer - anything with movement. Because our family deals with autoimmune disorders, movement is part of our holistic family health plan. We go out and play together as a family, and we work out together in the garage gym. We play soccer and tennis together – we make our own foursome! We love the beach, and we do the same things there – walk, throw a Frisbee around. We do a lot of bike riding and swimming at the beach, too. It’s an easy way to get exercise without feeling like you’re exercising. And with kids, any time you can get energy out and keep them engaged in an activity, it’s a win!

Jeremy and Crystal own Renee’s Auto Care Club. They are engaged to be married. We’re casual hikers and enjoy exploring local trails. Last time we were at Pocahontas State Park, we hiked 14 miles! We also enjoy car-related spectator activities: motorsports, drag racing, auto shows. We’re regulars at Cars & Coffee, RVA’s largest informal car show – it’s held biweekly outside Regency Square Mall. Road trips are another car-related thing we like – we enjoy visiting Washington, D.C., to tour the monument district, sample restaurants, and ust explore. We hope to make it there this year during cherry blossom season. We also love festivals. One of our favorites is the One Music Festival in Atlanta – it didn’t happen in 2020 due to Covid and we’re looking forward to returning!

GREER AND HUGH JONES Greer is principal broker at Greer Jones Properties. Hugh is a mortgage loan officer with Geneva Financial. They have a daughter, Kaitlyn, 10. We like to spend time outdoors. We hike, and Hugh and Kaitlyn like to camp. Top of the list is the beach: We go as often as we can. While we’re there, we hang out, play games on the beach, boogie board, and visit friends. At home, we like Robious Landing Park – it’s right on the river, and the dogs love the trails. We have a 1½-year-old golden retriever, Max, and a 3-year-old German shepherd, Emma. We put in a pool a year ago, and that’s now our new favorite thing. Anything that has water, we’re drawn to. Max loves the water – he jumps right in like he’s going off the diving board, and I swear he’s smiling! Emma won’t even put her paw in.

Three Lakes Park and Nature Center has a great playground, picnic spot, and easy walking trails. Our girls enjoy kicking a soccer ball on the fields at Rockwood Park and going to the playground. At Maymont, we can picnic and visit the animals. And Belle Isle is perfect for family hikes, bike rides, picnics, and splashing in the water. We moved to Virginia from Utah 3 years ago and love extreme sports. Our favorites are dirt biking, snowboarding, mountain biking, wakeboarding and surfing behind our boat. Dirt biking is a springtime fave. Our daughter rides a little pink motorcycle and our boys started riding when they were little also. They’re so good, and it’s fun to watch them fly through the air whether on a mountain bike, wake board, snowboard or dirt bike. Does Gluten Disagree with You?

Photo by Victoria Shes on Unsplash

If you’re not feeling well or bothered by nagging symptoms, it could be due to gluten in your diet ARTICLE BY LAUREL OTEY

38

EAT R IGH T | HEA LTH + WE LLNE S S

The gluten free diet has become one of the most popular diet trends around the world. Most people may eat gluten-containing foods as part of a healthy diet. For others, gluten causes numerous health problems and worsens their quality of life. So how do we know if we might be reacting to gluten? Here are 9 signs that gluten isn’t working for your body. These symptoms most commonly occur in patients with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). 1 - Brain Fog or Fatigue Neurological symptoms may be triggered by gluten. Common signs include brain fog, chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and mood swings. There are numerous other neurological symptoms, as well. 2 - Pain or Numbness Joint pain, tenderness, or swelling may be caused by a reaction to gluten. Often this pain is attributed to arthritis and so the true trigger remains unidentified. Nerve pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness (neuropathy) are also symptoms. Likewise, headaches and migraines are significantly more common among undiagnosed and untreated patients with celiac disease or NCGS. This is seen in both adults and children. 3 - GI Complaints Bloating, indigestion, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, or constipation are not normal or healthy. Plus, they make life miserable! IBS is frequently diagnosed prior to identifying gluten as a trigger for one’s symptoms. 4 - Skin Rashes Eczema, psoriasis, acne, hives, and alopecia areata (autoimmune-triggered hair loss) may indicate that gluten isn’t working for you. These conditions have been most studied in relation to celiac disease. However, eliminating gluten may improve symptoms in people without this autoimmune disease as well. 5 - Vitamin or Mineral Deficiencies Recurrent vitamin or mineral deficiencies are a frequently missed sign of celiac disease. Left untreated, they cause serious short- and long-term health problems such as sleep disorders, osteopenia, or osteoporosis.

Patients are most likely to be chronically low in iron, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, zinc, folate (vitamin B-9), vitamin B-12, and/or fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6). Prior to diagnosis and treatment with a gluten free diet, supplementation may not help due to malabsorption. 6 - Oral or Dental Health Problems Dental enamel defects (stains, pits, lines, and grooves), partial or complete loss of enamel, delayed tooth eruption, frequent cavities, and recurrent mouth ulcers (canker sores) are often caused by nutrient deficiencies. These deficiencies may be the result of a reaction to gluten. 7 - Infertility and Miscarriage When the body isn’t getting the nutrients it needs, it reacts havoc on our hormones. This can lead to reproductive problems. Amenorrhea (no period), highly irregular menstrual cycle, endometriosis, unexplained infertility, recurrent miscarriage, and stillbirth are all possible signs of celiac disease or NCGS. 8 - Slowed Growth Failure to thrive or delayed onset of puberty are most commonly seen when celiac disease begins in early childhood. These growth problems are signs of malnutrition. Again, when our body isn’t getting enough of all the nutrients it needs to live and grow, numerous health problems will occur. 9 - Autoimmune Diseases Gluten is an inflammatory food and may worsen inflammatory conditions, such as autoimmune disease. Many people living with autoimmune diseases have noticed improvements in their symptoms by going gluten free. If you think you may be reacting to gluten or wheat, talk to your doctor about comprehensive celiac disease and allergy testing. Visit Music City

Getaway to Nashville

and ‘Write Your Own Music City Story’

Write your own music story. That’s exactly what the chefs, artists, historians, musicians and impassioned locals of Nashville want visitors to do as they dive into this culturally diverse and oh-so-friendly city. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Music City to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this city rich in experiences that only Nashville can give. It’s a destination drenched in distinction with elevated tastes, down-home charm and a range of discoveries both well-known and emerging—Nashville is ready to rock your world. With recent headlines such as “Top destinations for food and city lovers” (Tripadvisor), “Most anticipated hotel openings of 2022” (Forbes), and “Top global venues for live music” (Tennessean), Nashville has so much more than you’ve ever imagined, and we’re here to round up our recommendations for you. Whether you’re a Nashville enthusiast or a novice soon to cross this off your domestic bucket list, you will love the medley of past meets present and Southern roots paired with modern amenities. As the largest city in Tennessee, Nashville boasts an impressive array of destinations, including luxurious hotels such as the Sheraton Grand in the heart of downtown, Urban Cowboy, Noelle and The Hermitage Hotel, which houses the upscale restaurant Drusie and Darr, led by world-renowned chef Jean-Gorges. Come and enjoy a truly elevated dining experience that reflects the new era of Nashville. When ready to absorb the historic side of the city, the centuries-old landmark and winery, Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery, offers guests “historic tours, family tours, wine and food pairings, bourbon tastings and chef-inspired food and wine pairings” that are unparalleled in their local experience. Likewise, Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery carries an incredible story of origination and bottles a remarkable 1860 family recipe that made Tennessee Whiskey world famous.

Let’s talk about one of the most anticipated— the food scene! Three things Nashville is known for are hot chicken, barbecue, and meat & three restaurants. Meat & three is a traditional Southern, cafeteria-style eatery with three meats changing daily, such as roast beef, meatloaf, fried chicken or catfish, plus your choice of three vegetable sides. Nashville has amassed a lot of attention over the last 10 years for its exquisite food scene, with several James Beard award-winning chefs and an incredible independent restaurant scene. People know how good the food scene is, but if they really want to find those independent chef-driven restaurants like Rolf and Daughters, FOLK, Bastion, Locust, or Henrietta Red, these are the chefs that garner a lot of attention that you won’t want to miss. Along with these notable culinary establishments, don’t overlook mainstays such as Arnold’s Country Kitchen, a traditional meat & three that has been in the same family for decades and where chefs love to eat because everything is sourced locally and delicious. Whether it’s traditional Southern food or higher end chef-driven cuisine, the quality is expected and delivered. You can also find dozens of amazing rooftop bars and cocktail lounges, as well as many hidden bars you can dig around for, such as the one in the Noelle hotel. For the art lovers at heart, Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, streets art, public art, art galleries and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings. Music history venues such as the new National Museum of African American Music will complement your old favorite Frist Art Museum, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, and Grand Ole Opry experiences. According to @visitmusiccity, “Everyone should do the Grand Ole Opry one night; it’s not just about the music, it’s a piece of history and the world’s longest running radio show.”

“Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, streets art, public art, art galleries, and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings.”

As for the lay of the land, Nashville is definitely a city of neighborhoods. Each neighborhood is known for its own distinct feel and personality. East Nashville is funky, artsy, trendy and quirky. Germantown is a little more upscale with its chefdriven restaurants and walkable nature, known as Nashville’s first neighborhood founded by German settlers. 12South has eateries, boutique shopping and a lot of local favorites. Wedgewood-Houston is in transition mode right now with great breweries, distilleries, bakeries and art galleries. In the end, they all have their own scene. Plus, you can shop your heart out at a wealth of boutiques, galleries and local maker shops, as well as Nashville’s upscale The Mall at Green Hills brimming with luxury stores such as Golden Goose and Gucci. Last but not least is the music scene. Whether you’re into blues, jazz, honky tonk, rock, symphony or quite literally any genre of music imaginable, Nashville has it all. Spend one night on Broadway hopping bar to bar, sit orchestra-side at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, tour and take in a show at the 130-year-old Ryman Auditorium, then experience a songwriter’s night at The Bluebird or The Listening Room Cafe. The music is different every night everywhere, so one is best served by referring to visitmusiccity.com for their Upcoming Concerts Calendar to soak up all the magnificent sounds. There’s often a general misconception that if you don’t like country music that you won’t enjoy this musically rooted city. This could not be farther from the truth, according to the team of lifestyle experts at Visit Music City. “There’s a lot more than just country music happening here. Country music laid the foundation that put all of these song writers, studios, musicians and infrastructure into place for all of this music to happen. But whether you like country music or not, what you don’t realize is that there’s a lot of music you might like that you never thought of as country.” This is a revelation that will pleasantly surprise many. And, what better way to bestow a no-questions-asked travel itinerary than with the locals’ knowledge. “Once people experience the genuine hospitality of Nashville to the level they do, many are surprised by how incredibly friendly people are.” Visit Music City Visit Music City offers a complimentary service called Trip Planner where you can contact their “Nashville Experts” who work on the visitor experience team, and they will help as much or as little as you want, including an entire agenda or a few suggestions (See “Plan a Trip” on the site).
