MELISSA OEFELEIN At Burn Boot Camp

Group fitness classes have been an important part of my life since 2009. That's when I quit running full time and began taking spin, strength training and HIIT classes. In 2012, I became certified in cycle, Insanity by Beachbody, general group exercise, Les Mills Body Pump, Grit and RPM, leading as many as 14 classes per week at local clubs. Motherhood and my growing real estate business shifted dynamics; I’m a member of some of these highlighted businesses in our Midlothian back yard while teaching one class per week. Burn Boot Camp offers 45-minute camps that blend strength training and cardio. Each day has a different theme and workout led by a certified trainer, with options for all fitness levels. Depending on the theme, one might work with dumbbells, medicine balls, kettle bells, battle ropes or just body weight. Burn is like family. Trainers hold members accountable with fitness goals and assist with nutrition evaluations. Burn also gives back through toy drives, support for veterans, and fun runs. Free 7-day trial available.

Hot House Yoga is locally owned and operated following the intelligent teaching principles set by the Yax family, who founded the studio in 2005 in Virginia Beach. Choose from three styles. Hot Flow is fast-pace; Hot Yin is the slowest, targeting bones, tendons, disks, fascia and ligaments. Hot Stability is great for both beginners and advanced students. Practicing yoga in the heat is protects muscles as they move through the range of motion. Endorphins are released to relieve stress, and sweating exfoliates and rejuvenates the skin, the largest organ of your body. Twoweek unlimited class trial, $59. CycleBar is now open in Midlothian! This premium indoor cycling experience offers different 45-minute rides to inspire members of any fitness level. Classes incorporate speed, strength and upper body work using a 4- or 6-pound bar. Twelve songs per class each offer a different challenge. Complimentary cycle shoes are provided; when your ride is completed a performance summary is emailed showing your power, calories burned, class rank and more. First class is free. The Row House is a rowing-based program backed by science and producing maximum results engaging over 86% of your body's muscles (legs, core, arms, back). Classes deliver a balance of aerobic endurance and muscular strength. Choose from six formats, each with a different theme. Restore focuses on rowing and a series of dynamic stretches between rowing intervals, a perfect way to end the week. Express Signature is a 30-minute version of the popular Signature, a mix of rowing intervals and low-impact, full-body exercises. Foundation lets you to focus on your rowing stroke. Power is high-intensity mixed with low-impact strength work. Full Row focuses on endurance. Most classes are 45 minutes, and your first class is free. I highly recommend all these studios, regardless of your fitness level. They are unique, welcoming places to find community as a monthly member, or, if you prefer, purchase punch cards for classes. This Year, I Resolve to ...

Tired of resolutions to lose weight and exercise more? Try these four suggestions to bring better health in 2022 Every new year provides an opportunity to focus on your health. And after two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s never been more important. At PartnerMD, a concierge primary care practice with an office in Midlothian just off Woolridge Road, Dr. Lindsay Sherrard and health coach Jaime Monsen work together to help patients improve their health, especially in the new year. You already know about eating right and exercising regularly. But what else should be on your list of New Year’s resolutions? Here are a few ideas:

20

H OU SE CA LL | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

1.

See your primary care physician. During COVID, many people stopped seeing their physician regularly. According to Dr. Sherrard, that could create some problems. “The preventive screening tests your PCP recommends can be life savers,” she said. “During the pandemic, I’ve seen complications from medications because patients haven’t gotten the frequent monitoring they need. I’ve seen cancer diagnoses delayed because of a lack of screening. Staying current on your preventive care is so important.” The first step to improving your health in 2022 is to find a PCP you trust and to visit them consistently. Dr. Sherrard also recommends seeing a health coach for a customized nutrition and exercise plan, and establishing a relationship with a counselor to check in on your emotional health and sleep patterns.

2.

3.

4.

Set your goals for 2022.

Find an accountability partner.

Don’t quit if you lapse.

Taking care of yourself is one of the best gifts you can give your loved ones. Achieving your health goals in 2022 starts with having them in the first place. “You can make tremendous progress in 12 months if you set goals and develop a plan with your PCP,” Dr. Sherrard says. “Working together, we can improve lab results, control your blood pressure, help manage weight, and optimize medications.” Setting and achieving simple goals can pay huge dividends in a relatively short amount of time, Dr. Sherrard added. “Busy moms and other caregivers must remember that they will not be good caregivers if they’re not healthy themselves,” she said.

As a health coach at PartnerMD, one of Jaime’s main roles is as an accountability partner for patients pursuing better health. “Your partner could be a health coach, but it could also be a family member, a friend, a neighbor, etc.,” said Jaime. “Having a partner can have a huge impact on your success, and my patients who check in with me more often see more success managing their health.”

Getting off track should be expected, Jaime says. “It’s not realistic to think you won’t ever fall off track. It’s OK. The most important thing is to recognize it and get back to work.” What’s the best advice for getting back on your program? “Start immediately. Don’t let time go by,” said Jaime. “Today is your day to get back on track, even if it’s just getting back to small changes in your lifestyle or routine. Also, call your accountability partner. That’s what they are there for. I always suggest my patients call me as soon as they notice they’re lapsing. I’m here to get you back on track and make it easier for you!” partnermd.com JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/M I D LOT HI A N

Steve Perkins

Heading into the start of the year there's always a lot of hype around goals, resolutions and kicking-off the new year "right." But it can actually take several weeks, if not months, to really get into the swing of things. And, if you're like many people right now, you're in some kind of transition (in career or life) and experiencing the impact of our current world circumstances, which can make setting priorities for the new year even harder. In fact, multiple sources quoted this fall noted that 95% of American workers are thinking about or planning to leave their jobs. Some are calling it, “The Great Resignation,” but I like to think of it as, “The Great Reset.” An opportunity to step into something more meaningful - a purpose, a legacy. An opportunity to pursue that idea you’ve wanted to for a while. An opportunity to explore and rethink what’s next. But the question is, how? What if you’re not even sure what you want to do next? Wondering, too, where your skills and abilities fit in the ever-changing world? Feeling like you’re not quite an outsider, but more like an “in-betweener.” Interested in many things, yet clearly fitting nowhere. This is my story and the story of so many others feeling stuck in the fog of modern career navigation: longing for clarity, and maybe even confidence in purpose and calling.

You might be wondering what’s realistic in this new age – where we are privileged to ask these questions, and yet still struggling to find our way and do our best work. Part of why this is happening is because our current societal system elevates a few professions and career paths that are most beneficial to the system as a whole. Meanwhile, there are thousands of other credible paths that provide tremendous value to the world and are critical to the economy and to human flourishing. Creative roles. Generalist roles. People-helping jobs. In-betweeners. Not to mention, people who have been successful, but are looking for more than just a job now and want to help others from their experiences. In fact, 85% of the American workforce is made up of ‘unconventional’ jobs and roles, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor. Over the last 10 years, I’ve been studying this phenomenon and working with individuals, and I’m learning that a growing number of people of all ages are feeling stuck or thinking about what’s next. And not just because of what some say is a selfish desire to be “passionate about their work,” but because most people are realizing that the majority of their waking hours could have meaning and purpose. They could get outside their current/past roles and how people have defined them in the past, so they can see themselves clearly and define who they are and what they really want moving forward.

“If you’re finding yourself at a crossroads to make a change, know that your past isn’t wasted. It gives you experiences to reference from and to help others.”

So, if you’re finding yourself at a crossroads to make a change, know that your past isn’t wasted. It gives you experiences to reference from and to help others. Second, here’s some encouragement: It’s possible to find clarity and confidence for what’s next. STOP SUGAR CRAVINGS! AFTER A SEASON OF SUGARPLUMS, YOU NEED THESE TIPS TO HELP YOU SWEAR OFF THE SWEETS ARTICLE BY LAUREL OTEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY ALWOOD & UNSPLASH

EAT R IGH T | PR OFESSIONAL S E RVI CE S

Are you struggling with the post-holiday sugar crash? You’re not alone! Follow these 7 steps to stop sugar cravings and start feeling better.

#1: CLARIFY YOUR “WHY.” Making dietary or lifestyle changes based on guilt, shame, or other people’s opinions never works. In fact, it makes us feel even worse. So before you jump straight into a sugar cleanse, ask yourself: “How will my life be better by reducing how much sugar I eat?” Knowing this answer helps keep you motivated and on track.

#4: START YOUR DAY WITH PROTEIN, NOT SUGAR. Eating sugary foods first thing in the morning fuels sugar cravings all day. Instead, start your day off with healthy protein and satiating fats. If you enjoy something sweet in the morning, try eating berries with yogurt or a high-protein fruit smoothie. Adding in more naturally sweet vegetables, such as sweet potato, is another great way to curb sugar cravings.

#5: PRIORITIZE SLEEP.

Mild dehydration (which most American live with) causes you to feel like you need to eat when what you really need is water. Before you reach for a sweet treat or another snack, try drinking a glass of water first. If you still feel hungry 15 minutes later, then enjoy a healthy high-protein snack. Aim for at least eight, 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Drink more on hot days or when you're exercising. Carry a reusable water bottle as a reminder to stay hydrated.

Fatigue triggers cravings for sugar and simple carbohydrates, which metabolize into sugar. Why? Your body needs calories (aka energy) to keep working. Sugar is the fastest and easiest source of energy for your body. This is why you crave sweets, fast food, and processed foods when you're tired or stay up late. To reduce sugar cravings throughout the day, prioritize getting enough sleep at night. Adults should aim for 8 hours of sleep each night. Children and teenagers need more. If you’re consistently struggling with poor quality sleep, talk to your doctor about getting a sleep study and lab work done to find out why.

#3: DON’T SKIP MEALS.

#6: REDUCE YOUR STRESS.

When our blood sugar drops, sugar cravings naturally follow. Eating regular, balanced meals is the best way to stay off the blood sugar roller coaster. A well-balanced diet is made up of primarily whole, unprocessed foods found in nature. This includes plant and animal-based proteins, fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grains, and heart-healthy fats.

When we live in a state of chronic stress, our body seeks relief. This is a basic biological need. The easiest and fastest way to get that feel-good boost is by eating sugar. Fortunately, there are healthier ways to help us better manage our stress level. A 5-minute meditation or 30-second deep breathing exercise is beneficial, physically and mentally. For additional support, consider scheduling a session with a counselor or therapist.

#2: DRINK MORE WATER.

#7: MOVE YOUR BODY. Laurel Otey

Exercise is another great way to lower your stress level and reduce your sugar cravings. A few minutes of daily stretching, gentle yoga, or walking are all great places to start. If you’re new to exercise, talk to your doctor first. Sugar doesn’t have to control your life. Simple changes can provide you with the health and happiness you deserve! Laurel Otey is an infant and family wellness educator and owner of Layered Living, a holistic wellness practice. She specializes in autoimmune disease, food allergies, and stress reduction. Get Financially Fit!

Fitness is more than physical; making your money work for you can set yourself up for your whole life ARTICLE BY HEIDI JENKINS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACQUI DEPAS

M ON E Y M AT T E R S | L EGAL S E RVI CE S

The new year brings a new wave of goals and disciplines, as we reevaluate the previous year and brainstorm ways to make the next even better. Gyms see an influx of new members, all hoping to achieve physical fitness goals that they might not have otherwise placed as a priority. But did you know that while losing weight and joining a gym are the most popular New Year's resolutions, shortly behind them is saving money? The first step in any transformation is wanting to make the change. Taking that first step into a fitness facility or making the call to ask for financial help can be the hardest step. Once getting the ball rolling, though, you’re on your way to achieving those goals. “When a new client approaches OnPoint Financial Retirement to learn more about their path to financial freedom, we first get to know them, understand their goals, and their personal views on money,” says Michael Todd, OnPoint’s CEO and owner. “Usually, this is over a cup of coffee at one of our favorite locally owned shops.” The next step when mapping out your goals is to understand exactly what you’re working toward. “Personal trainers often encourage clients to determine their body mass index and weight as a starting point,” Michael says. “In the same vein, I work with my clients to establish a baseline of where they are financially and where they are going. There is no set amount of money – you just need something left over at the end of the month after your bills are paid. At

OnPoint we love what we do because it affords us the opportunity to work with people of all walks of life: We believe that financial freedom and wealth management tools should be afforded to everyone.” OnPoint guides clients through financial decision-making in the same way that personal trainers coach their clients through regimented workouts and programs. “We don’t use a ‘one size fits all’ approach to working with clients,” Michael says. “Just as anybody going into a gym will tackle very specific fitness goals, every individual client at OnPoint receives their own personal strategy. That’s because every person is unique. We don’t use a broad brush when it comes to our clients – we dedicate time and energy to clients individually to make sure they have exactly what they need to be successful.” And like any physical fitness journey, financial goals and plans are bound to change. OnPoint clients benefit from informative quarterly meetings focused on how their investments are doing, along with a conversation about short- and long-term goals. “Of course things will change, and we will pivot accordingly,” Michael says. Already have an advisor? “We would still love to meet you,” Michael says. “Let’s grab coffee. Those thirty minutes together could mean the difference between you just working for your money and having your money work for you.” Give OnPoint a call at 804-836-3167 or visit the website, onpointfinancialmanagement.com.

THE ANSWER GUY

ARTICLE BY MARY ELLIN ARCH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACQUI DEPAS

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

You can’t describe Rick Fleming in just one way. There’s his height: 6-foot-3, with a frame of a sportsman (he’s a surf fisherman). In his office, a portrait of six girls in tutus at the seashore attests to his status as doting grandfather and beach lover. The back-and-forth ribbing within his 9-person workplace off Moorefield Drive offers evidence he’s loved and respected. He’s mentor, trainer, and educator – a connector for whom referrals come as naturally as breathing. “I consider myself the answer guy,” said Rick, a Virginia Tech grad. “I have a very large quiver. I have folks at my fingertips.” For customers, that means Rick will refer them to a competitor if he can’t find the right USHealth plan for them. And, his referrals reach far beyond his field. He’s hooked folks up with a furniture refinisher, real estate agents, and parenting resources. He’s eager to help small businesses and 1099 contract workers. But health insurance is where he works most of his magic. For Rick, who has another granddaughter with Type 1 diabetes and who himself has a disorder that disqualifies him from standard insurance, it’s personal. “Our product is unique. We’re not cookie-cutter,” he said, noting his own USHealth Advisors high-risk plan saved him over $500 a month. “But I hope my reputation is better than the product.” He takes pride in making a difference for his clients and putting their needs first. “We’ve had clients who’ve had a halfa-million-dollar heart attack, and we paid it all,” said Rick, who’s licensed in 23 Eastern and Midwestern states. “I may tell clients to keep their plan. Right now we’re working on saving a great deal of money for a contracting company. I’m 100% about the client.” Rick got into health insurance after a varied career that included time in Human Resources and at his father’s Chesterfield office supply company (now sold). USHealth Advisors impressed him immediately. “Four execs took me out to a 5-star restaurant and they were praying before dinner,” said Rick, a cross around his neck. “This is part of my ministry. It’s an absolute passion for me. This field … it picked me.” When he’s not at the office, he’s with family – wife Patty and two daughters (the parents of those 6 granddaughters). “I love what I do, but I’m not going to work 80 hours anymore,” he said. ushagent.com/rickfleming richard.fleming@ushadvisors.com

Cold? Flu? COVID? TELEMEDICINE CAN HELP YOU DIAGNOSE SYMPTOMS, GET PROPER CARE - AND KEEP YOU OUT OF GERMY WAITING ROOMS ARTICLE BY MARY ELLIN ARCH | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY EUDOC ‘Tis the season – for colds and flu. And with COVID still a concern, you might be in a quandary over what illness you have and how to treat it. Telemedicine might be just the ticket. “Cold, flu, and now COVID season can be challenging and confusing. A doctor you know, trust, and can access helps navigate this season and provides timely treatment,” says Dr. Kenneth D. Qiu, in partnership with Dr. Mariana L. Keener at EuDoc. “When you’re sick, you shouldn’t have to wait a week or two to see your doctor. Our patients access us easily any time by message, phone or video visit.” Using telemedicine also keeps you out of a waiting room full of sick people. EuDoc’s appointment system staggers appointments to virtually eliminate waiting. Most colds resolve with basic home treatment. But flus and COVID can lead to serious illness. “Older individuals and those with chronic conditions have a higher risk of severe complications from viral disease,” says Dr. Qiu. “They should have a lower threshold for early testing and physician evaluation.” EuDoc offers subscription-based primary care, charging a monthly fee that includes all in-person office and telemedicine visits. Services include well care, chronic and acute care, some procedures, and more. “We treat children and adults, making us a health-care option for the whole family,” Dr. Qiu says. becoming ... wellness warriors Wellness Warriors is a unique player in the fitness industry, taking a personal approach to wellness for those living with autoimmune disorders. The business grew out of Logan and Becky Pickels’ own health struggles. "We’re a family affected by autoimmune disease," Becky says. "Hashimoto hypothyroidism, celiac's disease, and ulcerative colitis were the beginning. Not wanting the disease to become who we were, we started exploring natural, diet-controlled ways to make a positive change. As we thought things couldn’t get worse, our youngest daughter was diagnosed with an autoimmune encephalitis. We knew we needed a new lifestyle." The family investigated environmental factors, physical requirements, and emotional needs, and trialed dietary changes. "We developed a new mindset, as a family," Becky says. "We’re thankful to say that after a year of dedicated, challenging work, everyone is now in remission." That year also birthed Wellness Warriors 18 months ago (yes, in the middle of the pandemic). The couple went back to school – Logan for a certification as a personal trainer, Becky to be trained as a nutritionist and health coach (she was already an elite trainer, credentialed in a number of specialties). “Our daughters suggested it,” Logan says of the couple’s 8- and 10-year-olds. “They’re just as much a part of this as we are. They cheer, and encourage, and work out alongside us.” One daughter even made a book of workouts and recipes, and the parents enlist both girls to assist with client families with children. A key component is Rise Up! Fitness. The program combines exercise, mindset and nutrition coaching with a wellness program, over 8-12 weeks. Other services include: 1-on-1 coaching and group coaching in fitness, nutrition, and mindset; and Teen Warrior. "Everybody is unique, with their own strengths and limitations," Logan says. "My method is to build a custom plan based on your health, schedule, and more importantly, fitness goals. I aim to transform your body and influence you to make more mindful health decisions." Much of the work is done virtually with clients as far away as Florida and Canada. Some local clients work out in the couple’s garage gym. Becky does the marketing and training via social media. Clients can be individuals, families, or groups of like-minded friends.

“It’s really about the journey they’re on,” Logan says. “Everything we do, we’ve been through. We’ve been through autoimmune, we’ve thrown out pots and pans, I’ve lost more than 40 pounds. We’ve gone from one lifestyle to another.” Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Wellness Warriors may hold the key to helping you to feel better.
