Welcome to November, Midlothian! The days are cooler and shorter, and the promise of the holidays and family gatherings are in our minds. We head out of our homes in the morning donning jackets and sweaters, seizing the moments of the season. Fall décor lines our shelves, fireplaces, and end tables, along with cookbooks and recipes opened to favorites for family get-togethers. My favorites of the season include the smell of mulling spices, pumpkin anything, and candles of various types. As the candles glow next to the fire in my living room, we enjoy a glass of wine from one of our local vineyards. It’s definitely the time of year when I count the many ways I am grateful for the blessings we have in home, faith, and family. Please join us in so doing, and welcome to the Thankful Issue! From nonprofits helping others build a business to those mentoring children and giving them tools to live healthy, productive lives, we did our best to share what our community is doing behind the scenes to make a difference. We’ve also got some amazing local businesses expressing their gratitude for their customers, as they go about providing the best service they can while honoring legacies, best practices, and the needs of others before their own. We’ve got so much talent right here, and so much more being developed every day. We are most thankful for this amazing community and how you have allowed us to share the myriad dynamic and heartwarming stories of grit and gain during this time in American history. Construction Begins on New Midlothian Library Chesterfield County and Chesterfield Public Library recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Midlothian Library to be located at 521 Coalfield Road. The new 25,000 square foot facility will be nearly two-thirds larger than the previous building and is expected to open in winter 2023. In addition to the previously offered services, the new library will include collaborative study and meeting spaces, a large community meeting room, and state-of-the-art technology to better facilitate meetings and collaboration.

Chesterfield County Selected for 5 VACo Achievement Awards The Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) recently selected Chesterfield County for five 2022 achievement awards. Most notable was their Best Achievement Award for “Connecting All Community Residents to Public Schools.” Chesterfield has earned at least one VACo award annually since the program’s inception in 1982. These awards highlight innovative programs focused on addressing high-priority issues presently challenging counties.

Magnolia Grange Museum House Reopened for Tours Magnolia Grange Museum’s historic home recently reopened following an extensive restoration and renovation project. Richmond Community ToolBank is a nonprofit unlike any other! They have brilliantly identified one of the biggest barriers to project completion- the lack of affordable access to tools and equipment. ToolBank bridges this gap by supplying nonprofits and local organizations with the tools, equipment, and expertise needed to get the job done. This enables these volunteer-based programs to fulfill their mission and enrich the Greater Richmond community. ToolBank’s 10,000-square-foot warehouse near Scott’s Addition houses a huge range of more than 200 high-quality tools and equipment. Over 200 local nonprofits, schools, churches, and civic groups partner with ToolBank which allows them to rent the supplies they need at an affordable price. ToolBank also offers individual lending programs to those wanting to build and maintain a Victory Garden at home or in a shared garden plot. The ability to borrow instead of buy tools, helps more organizations and families turn their dreams into reality. Over the past four years, ToolBank has provided tools to more than 60,000 volunteers to complete 4,000 projects. To get started, all an organization needs to do is register. Then, they can immediately begin ordering tools and equipment. The online ordering platform makes sourcing equipment easy and fast. A community member may either pick up their rented tools from ToolBank’s warehouse or have them delivered to their project site. Facility rentals are also available to groups that need a space in which to complete their projects. ToolBank’s 2,000-square-foot

open floor format event space is perfect for groups needing an area for their indoor volunteer projects, outreach and fundraising function, or other community events. Building Change is ToolBank’s own volunteer program. It invites local groups to sponsor and build a full outdoor classroom of 10 tables to be used to enhance neighborhood spaces throughout Richmond. Renee’s Auto Care Club is a family-inspired, mobile car care business owned and operated by Jeremy Moore. Since working on cars at the age of twelve with his grandfather, who happens to be the oldest black farmer in Virginia, Jeremy found satisfaction in fixing things and making them better. As a way of expressing his gratitude towards his mom, Renee, who was always busy taking care of the family, he began cleaning her car. “It brought her so much joy to see her car shine like new again and she appreciated having one less thing on her never-ending list of things to do,” Jeremy says. Her happiness is what inspired him to name his business after her. Jeremy started Renee’s Auto Care Club in 2018 by offering interior detailing to former gym clients. When one of those clients posted a recommendation on a “Moms” social media page, Renee’s Auto Care Club started gaining well-deserved attention. Through positive reviews on social media, Jeremy realized just how valuable and convenient his services were to working moms and busy families with demanding schedules. Different than traditional car wash services with inconsistent results and expensive detailing services, Jeremy explains, “From a detailing standpoint, we are the only company that offers full steam detailing in the area. Some competitors offer it as an interior add on, but we use it to do 90% of our cleaning.” Renee’s Auto Care Club aims to make car ownership easier, assisting with inspection and concierge services in addition to cleaning. With a variety of memberships available from seasonal detailing to weekly cleanings, Renee’s goal is to help families maintain a clean, safe car with the ease of mobile detailing and personalized support. Their exclusive detailing process referred to as CSP detailing involves three steps: Clean, Steam, and Protect. In the cleaning phase, heavy stains are pretreated inside and outside of the car. Next, the steaming phase blasts the surfaces with high-pressure steam to naturally deep clean and sanitize. Lastly, the protecting phase adds sealants to form a protective barrier and enhance the car’s appearance. CSP also stands for what Renee’s offers - Complete Surface Protection. Renee’s offers a unique service called pop-up car washes. These portable car washes are perfect for neighborhoods, office buildings, and job sites. Jeremy and his fun, friendly staff come to a set location and care for a group of cars in one day. Depending on the types of cars and conditions, complete cleaning can take anywhere from one to two hours per car. This special service helps reduce the overall cost, time, and CONTINUED >

effort used in detailing cars. On top of that, Jeremy’s knowledgeable, personable team makes the car washing process informative and entertaining to watch! The staff at Renee’s have each made significant contributions to help Jeremy flourish. With a family feel, Jeremy says, “We are learning and growing together with this business and everyone’s ideas and opinions matter.” His fiancé, Crystal Baldwin, has been with Jeremy since the beginning and assists with bookkeeping and customer support. Harvey Baker delivers excellent customer service and takes the time to know each client and their specific needs. Alea Abas is Jeremy’s virtual assistant who helps with a variety of much-needed tasks. Newcomer James Okpoti, thanks to both Jeremy and Harvey, is already a pro at detailing and cleaning! In honor of Fall Car Care Month in October, Midlothian Lifestyle hosted an event with Renee’s Auto Care Club to demonstrate Renee’s services to local car owners. While mingling with other car enthusiasts, Jeremy shared his story and gave some quick auto care tips.

Jeremy recommends that every car owner perform the following checks monthly to keep their car safe and running smoothly:

CHECK TIRES

Low pressure wears out tires and decreases fuel efficiency. Uneven wear means there are suspension issues that need to be addressed.

QUIET DRIVE

For ten minutes a month, take a quiet drive and listen to how your car sounds on the road. Listen for any odd noises during acceleration, braking, and turns.

KEEP IT CLE AN

A clean car is a safe car. Clean glass means you can see during inclement weather, and a clean interior means a water bottle cannot roll under your foot when braking. Ultimately, a clean exterior makes you feel good about owning your car, and everyone like to feel good!

IN THE SPIRIT OF THE SEASON, JEREMY EXPRESSES SINCERE THANKS FOR HIS STAFF: Crystal Baldwin has been working with me since the very beginning. Before we upgraded our equipment and purchased our first vehicle, I was actually working out the trunk of her car with a household steamer and shop vac. She is a project manager at O’Brien and Muse and helps us part-time with bookkeeping and customer support. I'm thankful for Crystal because she helps me turn ideas into actionable plans. More importantly she provides me with emotional support through the many highs and lows of being an entrepreneur. Harvey Baker joined us full-time in late 2020. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University who came to us from Capital One, he brings the wealth of customer service experience and excellence that our clients deserve. He takes the time to really get to know our clients and their unique needs. Pick any client and he can tell you about their kids or favorite sports team. I'll forever be thankful for that. Alea Abas is our virtual assistant who helps us with various tasks. I’m thankful for her because she helps me operate in my strength zone by performing routine admin task and providing back-end support. David Crisafi is the co-founder and executive director of L.A.U.N.C.H for Life, a nonprofit in Midlothian that serves young men ages 10-16 years old who live in the greater Richmond Area. Their free 12-month program enriches the lives of young men in need of a positive male role model. David recently met with Midlothian Lifestyle to discuss the ways in which this all-volunteer organization supports our local communities.

LAUREL: WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO START L.A.U.N.C.H FOR LIFE? DAVID: I grew up in a fatherless home and it had a great impact on me throughout my life, especially during adolescence. Early on, I watched my mom struggle to raise my sister and me by herself, living in a one-bedroom duplex with government assistance and support from our church. As I reflect back, my mom made sure I wanted for nothing, even putting the original Air Jordans shoes on layaway for my 7th birthday, which took her a year to pay off. But the reality is, I was missing something; I was missing that positive male role model. When you are a boy, growing into a man, you need someone you can relate to, who can offer you guidance, and provide empathy for the ups and downs you will experience. My mom did a great job, but she could never understand what it’s like to be a confused and hormonal 12-year-old adolescent young man because she’s never experienced it. That’s where we came up with the saying, “You can’t be, what you can’t see,” because we recognize that as we grow up and search for our own identity, we look to model after people we can relate to, people who have had the same experiences as us.

LAUREL: WHAT VALUES GUIDE THE MISSION AND WORK AT L.A.U.N.C.H FOR LIFE? DAVID: Our values are Leadership, Accountability, Unity, compassioN, Community, and Honor. Compassion is our keystone value, which is why we call it out especially. These values are intrinsic to the growth and development of boys into adolescence and adulthood. When boys grow up in homes with absent fathers or without positive role models, they are more likely to disengage in school and life, engage in offending behavior, and suffer from mental health challenges. Our mentoring program aims to break that cycle and our values are our touchstone to achieving our mission. Each value builds off the other, putting participating young men in the best position to succeed while being a representative of something bigger than themselves. Our values drive empowerment, self-worth, and resilience.

LAUREL: HOW DOES YOUR 12-MONTH PROGRAM WORK? DAVID: We begin each year with our three-day camp in August, and then have two events per month through the end of May. CONTINUED >

Most of the events take place on Sundays and we follow the Chesterfield County Schools schedule. Each one of our events is meant to provide these young men with unique experiences and is paired with a value focus where we execute a lesson plan that highlights that value. The year ends with a graduation, and we treat it very much like a high school graduation, where each graduate is provided a diploma.

LAUREL: WHAT IS REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN YOUR PROGRAM? DAVID: We require that the mentee attend at least 1 event a month for the duration of the 12-month program. There are NO other restrictions or qualifications, as we strive to be inclusive and culturally competent. Any young man, aged 10 to 16-years-old, in need of a positive male role model is welcome at L.A.U.N.C.H for Life.

LAUREL: WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF THE 12-MONTH PROGRAM? DAVID: After graduation, mentees have an opportunity to join our Graduate Program with their mentors. This program is also 12 months and is skill/project based. We have teamed up with

various organizations to teach these young men skills that may interest them as a hobby or career.

LAUREL: HOW DO YOU FIND AND CONNECT WITH THESE YOUNG MEN? DAVID: We take a very grassroots effort to identify and recruit mentees. We have worked with organizations like Communities in Schools, Chesterfield County Detention Center, and youth sports associations. But many of our mentees come from our personal connections and word of mouth, and that has been a big part of our recruitment efforts because everyone involved, including the parents of these young men, has seen the positive impact of this program.

LAUREL: WHAT SUPPORT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER FOR MOTHERS AND GUARDIANS? DAVID: Each month our Family Support Group hosts an event for the caregivers that coincide with their son’s event. This gives these caregivers the opportunity to relax, share experiences, and build a community of support so they don’t feel like they are doing it alone. We also provide the family with a list of community resources, training, and job opportunities.

LAUREL: TELL US ABOUT YOUR TEAM. DAVID: My team is absolutely amazing! From the Board of Directors to the volunteers to the mentors, these are all men and women who have a passion for this mission and have sacrificed their own time, money, and expertise to make L.A.U.N.C.H for Life successful. What I love about my team is that they are very diverse and bring a tremendous amount of life and professional experience to L.A.U.N.C.H for Life. While each group is important, I would like to recognize our mentors, because without them we can’t have a mentoring program. They go through a rigorous vetting process that includes a national background investigation and are required to attend several training sessions per year.

LAUREL: TELL ME ABOUT YOUR RECENT CAMP AND BBQ EVENTS.

We also recently held our second annual BBQ. It was the first time we had both the new mentees and our graduates attend together. In between enjoying some delicious food, we played kickball, basketball, and touch football, and the mentees also had the opportunity to learn about their mentors' professions. We also had a caregiver event nearby where they shared some food, conversation, and were guided through a painting course. The most powerful aspect of this event was the real-time demonstration of community in action.

making an impact While it started as a local nonprofit in Midlothian, the Colorado Fund for Muscular Dystrophy is now making a big impact across the country. Honoring the life of Aileen Colorado, the Colorado Fund has been able to supply funds for 12 grants in the past year totaling over $9,000 to provide equipment and medical services for situations in which insurance does not cover the cost. Provided equipment included seat elevation, power wheelchair, ceiling lift, scooter, wheelchair ramp, shower chair, wheelchair batteries, car hitch for wheelchair transport, leg brace, and even eye gaze technology to control a computer with the eyes. Medical services covered home health, physical therapy, and medication therapy. Local board members - Stephanie Colorado, treasurer, and Steven Casupanan, vice president - launched a seasonal restaurant series throughout the year where the local community could “dine for a cause” while supporting Richmond restaurants Mosaic, Charred at Swift Creek, Cameo Cakery & Café, Wild Ginger, and Latitude Seafood Company at Westchester Commons. Additionally, the Colorado Fund partnered with the Filipino American Association of Central Virginia in their annual golf tournament held at The Club at Viniterra, which donated a significant portion of their proceeds. Thanks to the generosity of our local community, over $4,000 were raised this past year.
