OUR COMMUNITY GIVING THANKS

November naturally invites us to pause and reflect on gratitude. This issue celebrates thankfulness in its many forms, highlighting the stories, businesses, and community connections that make our community a special place. You’ll also find a few tips and recipes for hosting Thanksgiving.
A Thankful Community

We asked our neighbors what they’re most thankful for in Middleton. From Harbor Athletic Club and Clasen’s European Bakery, to nonprofits like WayForward Resources and community spaces like the library and parks, their answers reveal that Middleton gives us a lot to be grateful for.
Thankful for Movement
After finding strength, balance, and belonging through barre3, Amy Fickell brought the practice to Middleton. Her studio has quickly become a hub for wellness, mindfulness, and community connection, always reminding us to be grateful for the health of our bodies and the support of those around us.
Covered, Thankfully
For Rural Mutual Insurance agent Jonathan Asker, insurance is more than policies and paperwork; it’s people. By focusing on relationships and personalized guidance, Jon turns a complex process into a source of peace of mind. His story is a reminder of the trust, care, and reassurance we can be thankful for when life feels uncertain.
As we reflect on gratitude this season, I want to take a moment to thank you, our readers, for your support of Middleton City Lifestyle. And to the local businesses who partner with us, thank you for investing in this community and raising the bar with the high-quality services and products you provide. I encourage everyone to continue supporting these businesses that make our city stronger.
On a personal note, Alexis and I are incredibly grateful to be heading into our first holiday season as parents, and for the love and support we’ve received this season. Wishing you a warm and joyful Thanksgiving filled with good food, meaningful connections, and plenty of reasons to be thankful.
With gratitude,

November 2025

This month, we asked our neighbors, business owners, and community leaders one simple question: What in Middleton are you thankful for? Their answers, heartfelt and varied, paint a picture of what makes this such a special place to call home.
One name rose to the top: Harbor Athletic Club. Community members praised both its welcoming atmosphere and wide range of fitness offerings. Local lifestyle physician Dr. Roopa Shah, MD, shared,
“Having been a member ever since we moved here 23 years ago, I see how the entire community comes to Harbor to stay fit and healthy. They have a myriad of fitness classes and wellness offerings, all in a space that is comfortable, inviting, and warm. They always greet you with a smile and say good-bye every time you leave. I love the youth classes they offer and how they encourage entire families to stay healthy together.”
Longtime member Carla Anderson agreed:
“Our family has been members since we moved to Middleton 18 years ago – Harbor is like our community’s own YMCA; there’s something for everyone. My favorites are the yoga, pilates, and sculpt classes, all with amazing instructors.”
Other local businesses also received shoutouts. Andrew Charles , partner of Middleton City Lifestyle and Merrill Lynch financial advisor, brought up a business he recently found:
“I’m thankful for ChiroWay of Madison – owned & operated by Dr. Aaron Zimmerman. Aaron takes a holistic approach to chiropractic care by determining what your body needs and adjusting accordingly. It’s not just about the “crack”, but the “why” behind the adjustment, to ensure your body and mind are properly in sync by addressing your brain’s highway - the spine. His knowledge of spinal vertebrae alone is impressive, and his method leaves you feeling cared for as an individual.”
Leo Edelstein , member of the Rotary Club of Madison West Middleton, mentioned a Middleton staple:
“Michelle and her artisan bakers at Clasen’s European Bakery. I enjoy their superb breads and their giving nature, helping Middleton Rotary Club raise funds every year.”
Community members expressed gratitude for nonprofits and community resources that make Middleton thrive. The team at Carrington Lawn & Landscape told us,
“We are grateful for WayForward Resources and all the fantastic work they do to support our community. They make it easy for local businesses to connect and give back to the community that supports them.”
Another reader lifted up the Middleton Public Library, sharing,
“It is an amazing resource that provides so many services beyond book lending. It is truly a community gathering place. I also love the helpful and efficient staff.”
Appreciation was shown for the ways the city creates opportunities for kids to stay active and engaged. Rusty Raatz from Proficient Lighting reflected,
“As young parents, one of our yearly challenges was finding activities for our kids during some of their free time. I can’t tell you what a find the Middleton Parks and Recreation Department was for our family. Their Rec Guide comes out early and is chock-full of activities for our kids for all seasons. We enjoyed sports in every season, art, martial arts, fishing, and cooking, to name a few. The staff and volunteers were always so helpful and friendly. Do yourself a favor and connect with them, your family won’t be disappointed!”

“They always greet you with a smile and say good-bye every time you leave. I love the youth classes they offer and how they encourage families to stay healthy together.”
“For more than 40 years, I’ve called Middleton home and I’m grateful for the ways this community has shaped my life. It’s been a great place to educate my children, and it’s given me the opportunity to develop friendships with amazing people.”

Middleton’s green spaces also received recognition. Rotary Club member Barry Pace pointed to Lakeview Park as a source of gratitude.
As November invites us to reflect and give thanks, one thing rings clear: Middleton is a place where people, organizations, and spaces bring joy and connection. This quote from Rotary member Mary Van Hout encapsulates it perfectly:
“For more than 40 years, I’ve called Middleton home and I’m grateful for the many ways this community has shaped my life. It’s been a great place to educate my children, a place I feel safe, and it’s given me the opportunity to develop friendships with amazing people.”
We’re thankful to share in a community that serves its residents and each other so well.

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?
The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.
Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.
“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”
Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:
SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”
Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:
“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”
Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.
This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.
“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”
Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.
This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.
To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.

Let’s face it: hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful. To make this year’s Thanksgiving meal easier and more enjoyable, consider the following timeline of tips.
• Print out the recipes you plan to use – this will easier than constantly tapping your phone to prevent the screen from going dark.
• Using your menu and printed out recipes as a guide, compose a complete shopping list.
• Double check your supply of herbs and spices to see what you have on hand.
• Shop for all non-perishable and frozen food items. Basically, if it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge, or if it doesn’t have a short shelf life, it’s going in the cart.
• Plan three easy and tasty dinners for the days leading up to Thanksgiving and purchase those ingredients during your shopping trip. Or plan at least one night of takeout.

Clean & Organize, Buy Fresh
• Clean your home completely. Then, as the big day approaches, you can touch up as needed.
• Finish your grocery shopping for fresh vegetables like potatoes, onions and carrots and other items not purchased earlier.
• Go through your fridge and toss any old, expired condiments, leftovers and mysterious food items that no one is eating.
Prep Meals & Set the Table
• Wash and chop all veggies and place the prepped produce into plastic baggies or airtight food storage containers. If some recipes call for “minced onion” and others require “chopped onion,” label the bags accordingly.
• Set the table, and include the empty serving dishes. This will help you figure out ahead of time where the larger dishes can go. Add Post-It notes to the empty dishes to remind you what will go in what. Use a clean sheet to cover everything and keep it all dust-free.
• Gather all needed serving spoons and other serving pieces.
• Pre-measure herbs and spices for your recipes and store them in labeled small plastic bags with the name of the dish they are for and what’s in the baggies. You can also do the same for any flour, sugar or other non-perishable ingredients you’ll use in your dishes.
• Do a quick clean and tidy around the home; for instance, run the vacuum.
• If you haven’t already done so, bake your pies, or, at the very least, prepare your pie dough.
• Make the mashed potatoes. Bonus tip: on Thanksgiving, put the potatoes into a slow cooker and heat them up using the “warm” setting.
• Prepare the gravy. If you have a second slow cooker, it too can be warmed up this way on Thanksgiving. This will also help free up pots, pans and burners on the stove!
• Set up a separate drink station where guests can help themselves or someone can serve them away from the kitchen. Stock it with glasses of different sizes, napkins, bottle and can openers and straws.

ARTICLE BY BAILEY MORRIS
It’s campfire season! You know what that means? S’MORES! These sweet treats are staples during the fall and winter! I have many childhood memories of sitting by the campfire with my family telling stories, gazing at the stars, and roasting marshmallows.
This year, take your s’mores to a whole new level with this S’mores Dessert Board! They are so easy and fun to make! Similar to a Charcuterie Board, a S’mores Dessert Board is beautifully decorated and full of everything you need to make the perfect s’mores! Some of my favorite things to include in a s’mores are either peanut butter or a mint chocolate candy!
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Board: A beautiful wood board or metal tray will look great!
Marshmallows: Choose between regular, jumbo, or flavored marshmallows.
Chocolate: There are so many options for chocolate when it comes to s’mores! There’s milk chocolate, peanut butter chocolates, white chocolate, caramel chocolates, and much more!
Graham Crackers: Use graham crackers or a variety of cookies for your s’mores.
Fresh Fruit: Include fresh fruits as toppings for your s’mores.
Skewers: Don’t forget to bring skewers to roast your marshmallows on!

For most people, insurance isn’t a hot topic at the dinner table, except for Jonathan, who grew up in the industry under his father’s wing and heard firsthand how the right coverage could provide peace of mind. Drawn to the level of trust his dad provided clients, Jon saw an opportunity to demystify the process and turn a complex transaction into a compassionate act of care.
Insurance is no less dry to him than it is to us, yet Jonathan Asker sees what many of us don’t: the human side of insurance. Jon chooses to digest a convoluted topic with the pure-hearted purpose of providing clarity and guidance to those in his circle. He sees value in getting to know someone, understanding how small nuances can point towards the most effective plan. By pairing his insider knowledge with clients’ specific needs, he can provide a personalized plan aligned to their lifestyle, ensuring they’re covered for what they truly need, and not paying for what they don’t.
Establishing a genuine connection with the people he serves and being the person they can turn to for help is the most rewarding part of Jon’s job. His goal is to collectively determine a plan that makes you feel secure, knowing it’ll translate to gratitude during some of life’s hardest moments. Whether it’s joy from reducing your monthly rate, panic after a car crash, excitement when you purchase a new home, fear when your teen gets their license, or the confusion of not knowing where to start, Jon will be right there with you to experience those emotions and guide you along the path that puts you first.
He finds importance in playing an active role in the community, establishing himself as a connector ready to problem-solve and refer clients to a trusted network. Jon’s focus on his surrounding community was a natural fit for Rural

Mutual Insurance, as the company is built on the principle that “premiums paid here stay here to keep Wisconsin strong.” More than a slogan, this localized approach means premiums directly impact fellow Wisconsinites. Predictable or unexpected, change is constant, and knowing exactly who to call to understand and interpret those changes provides reassurance we never knew we needed. With Jon in our corner, we can be thankful for the peace of mind that comes with being truly protected.

After having her second set of twins, Amy Fickell, mother of six, found herself in a body that felt unfamiliar and unable to function without pain. As a trained physical therapist, she had always prioritized health and valued the body’s intricate mechanics, but now she struggled to find a workout that didn’t cause her discomfort. Her search led her to barre3, where she discovered a practice that mirrored her professional principles. What began as a need to reclaim her body’s strength quickly transformed into a value-aligning purpose.
It was here that Amy found a consistent community and a path to reconnect with her own health. Despite moving from city to city, she felt at ease knowing she had barre3 to begin anew. This sense of belonging, love of barre3’s challenging yet safe workout, and the profound impact the practice had on her life compelled her to get certified as a barre3 instructor and begin instructing classes, guiding others to find their own path to wellness.
As her children grew older and more independent, she felt it was time to take the next step. She saw a need in her new community of Middleton for a space that offered an integrated approach to functional movement, body awareness, and inner balance, along with a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere complete with on-site childcare. The decision to open her own studio was a direct response to a need she experienced firsthand, and her personal mission to “share the gift of barre3” and its core values with others.
Less than one year in and already an epicenter for community connection, it seems we have Amy to thank for cultivating a space where we can feel confident prioritizing our health, together.
At the heart of barre3’s philosophy are three powerful pillars: strength, cardio, mindfulness. With classes built to embody each, they are the foundational principles of a practice that guide individuals to build a more grateful mind as they develop a functional relationship with their bodies. This holistic approach empowers everyone, from triathletes to near-centenarians, to seek a deeper connection with their own physicality.
The STRENGTH pillar focuses on functional fitness, the kind that supports everyday life. Unlike workouts that push onerep maxes, barre3’s approach utilizes lighter weights and high repetitions to achieve what Amy calls “time under tension.” This method builds muscle endurance and prevents injury by creating balance. From a physical therapist’s standpoint, Amy explains that many injuries are not from a traumatic event, but from an imbalance in the body’s musculature. The strength work strategically targets opposing muscle groups to ensure a balanced, resilient body. It’s a purposeful practice that prepares you to intentionally carry groceries, lift your children, or simply stand taller, all without pain.
The CARDIO pillar redefines what it means to increase your heart rate. Barre3 cardio classes are designed to leave you feeling energized. They incorporate fluid, full-range movements in a series of circuits, with options to dial up or down your intensity level, empowering you to listen to your body’s needs. The goal is to reach your 60-80% heart rate max, a zone where your body receives optimal cardiovascular benefit without feeling depleted. As Amy explains, a stronger heartbeat has a profound effect on our overall health, strengthening the heart muscle, improving stamina, and even helping clear plaques in the brain associated with dementia. Cardio isn’t just about weight loss or endurance; it’s a vital tool for mental and physical well-being, releasing endorphins that act as natural anti-anxiety and antidepressant agents.
The MINDFULNESS pillar encourages you to focus internally, connecting the brain and muscles in a powerful way. Amy explains how this practice creates new neuromuscular pathways and strengthens existing ones through consistent, focused practice and repetition, making it easier to recruit more muscles for daily tasks, such as activating your core to prevent back pain. The mindful flow classes, with their soft music and breath-driven movements, offer space to slow down and listen to your body, making us more in tune with its needs and grateful for its capabilities. As you focus inward on yourself and your breath, you become centered in the present moment. This deliberate act of gratitude for yourself can shift your autonomic nervous system from fight-or-flight to a state of rest and digest, allowing your body to restore and rejuvenate your muscles. Amy encourages people to incorporate this practice into their daily lives, with countless stories from clients who have implemented these techniques to manage stress and anxiety, demonstrating the lasting impact it has.
In a world that often pushes us to be harder, faster, and more, Amy’s studio is a powerful reminder that our greatest strength lies in our ability to be present, grateful, and to honor the bodies we’ve been given.

The holiday season is officially on, and gifting is top of mind. We’re all used to scrolling online, browsing the malls or hitting the local boutiques, but sometimes it’s fun and unexpected to switch it up.
