LIFESTYLE LETTER
Health & Wellness The world of health and wellness feels like a fast-moving stream of information. Everywhere you look, you can find headlines sharing the latest innovations, from GLP-1 drugs to cold plunges and new supplements. Speaking from experience, it’s easy to get swept up in the noise and feel overwhelmed by the trends. With endless information at our fingertips, we often forget that the simplest advice still matters most: move your body, eat well, and prioritize sleep. Those remain the foundation of a healthy life. Middleton physician Dr. Allan Mottram is flipping traditional healthcare on its head with Perennial Wellness & Longevity, a practice built around longevity and proactive prevention. Using precision testing and personalized protocols, Dr. Mottram helps patients feel stronger, younger, and more energized. Our article highlights his science-forward, prevention-first approach and why he believes decline doesn’t have to be inevitable. For decades, Harbor Athletic Club has stood on a simple, powerful idea: Train for Life. It drives everything they do, from class programming and facilities to personalized coaching. How do you want to feel in 10, 20, or 40 years? Harbor will help you get there. We cover some of their programming, including a “Training for Longevity” workshop launching in January. If you’re ready to start the new year recharged, our “Wellness Weekends” roundup features six rejuvenating getaways within easy reach of Middleton. From world-class destination spas to restorative B&B retreats, each one offers a refreshing reset for both mind and body. Relief Mental Health was founded by Susan Mueller to bridge the long-standing gap between those seeking support and the challenges of accessing timely care. Their Middleton team blends traditional medication management with innovative treatments and individualized support, ensuring compassionate and immediate care for our community. After years of showing people what’s really in their tap water, Bottleless Nation is on a mission to make hydration cleaner and easier. Our interview with Jacob Thorwolf examines what is in Middleton’s water and Bottleless Nation’s straightforward path to better water, whether in a workplace or in your own kitchen. As we look toward a new year filled with fresh health and wellness goals, we’re grateful for these local leaders who bring expertise, innovation, and personalized care to our community. We wish everyone a healthy year ahead. Cheers to 2026! COLE SPITLER, PUBLISHER @MIDDLETONCITYLIFESTYLE

Perennial Wellness & Longevity: An Accessible Partnership for Optimizing Long-Term Health Dr. Allan Mottram isn’t waiting for disease to strike. As founder of Perennial Wellness & Longevity, a new addition to the Middleton health scene, he’s built a medical practice around a simple but radical premise: the best time to address health problems is years before they appear. His approach? Longevity medicine, a discipline focused on precise, personalized prevention that utilizes evidence-based tools to formulate a plan around you. Dr. Mottram spent nearly two decades practicing traditional medicine, specializing in emergency medicine and medical toxicology. His experience includes extensive clinical work, teaching medical students and physicians in training, and research. During his emergency medicine career, he performed countless diagnostic workups and treatment plans, during which he kept seeing the same critical pattern repeat. “I was practicing reactive medicine, patching problems after they’d appeared,” Dr. Mottram recalls, “I wanted to move further upstream, using detailed testing and monitoring to detect changes earlier and help people preserve their health before problems take hold.” These frustrations ultimately drove him to leave traditional medicine for a practice model focused entirely on proactive care. It may be hard to fathom why someone would leave a secure career with such hard-earned esteem, but for Dr. Mottram, the decision wasn’t a rejection of his training; it was an extension of it. “Everything I learned in emergency medicine taught me how to save lives in crisis,” he says, “now I’m trying to prevent the crisis altogether.” Dr. Mottram designed Perennial Wellness & Longevity to eliminate the barriers inherent in traditional care and streamline

the path to wellness. As the sole physician, he emphasizes an accessible partnership built around patient convenience, offering virtual appointments, mobile at-home visits, and care at his new downtown Middleton clinic space, opening in February. The experience is centered on active dialogue, with appointments structured to allow for true depth, often lasting 60 to 90 minutes, rather than the rushed 15-minute standard. Perennial Wellness & Longevity operates with the philosophy that if you don’t measure health, you can’t reliably change it. The detailed, scientific approach tracks core biomarkers of metabolic health, cardiovascular risk, and inflammation. Alongside measures of biological age, body composition, genetics, and epigenetics, these advanced diagnostics measure health trajectory and identify risks to enable strategic intervention. Biomarker & Genetic testing provide a scope of health insights to direct specific longevity plan recommendations. Biomarker panels measure 100+ markers, including fasting insulin, ApoB, lipoprotein(a), high-sensitivity CRP, hormone status, and nutrient deficiencies. Genetic testing examines your DNA to identify inherited risk. Lifestyle genetics analyzes your genes to predict how your body will respond to varying inputs like nutrition, exercise, and sleep. Epigenetic testing evaluates how your lifestyle and environmental factors influence your gene expression over time, determining your biological age. VO₂max testing measures cardiorespiratory fitness, which is recognized as one of the strongest predictors of longevity, often

“Your health is the foundation of everything you care about. surpassing traditional metrics like cholesterol, blood pressure, and BMI. This short, intensive test establishes a ‘fitness age’ to provide a clear, actionable training guideline. “The good news,” Dr. Mottram emphasizes, “is that VO₂max is highly trainable at any age with targeted exercise.” DEXA scans provide a precise body composition analysis, measuring essential factors such as muscle mass, bone density, and visceral fat, a significant predictor of metabolic diseases. With the intention of making longevity medicine accessible, Dr. Mottram shares, “there’s an entry point for everyone serious about their health,” offering several tiered membership programs and à la carte options. At the entry level is Perennial Assurance, providing foundational longevity care through bi-annual advanced labs with physician-interpretation consults, ongoing health tracking and access to all clinic resources. For a more intensive focus, Perennial Elevate and Perennial Performance each offer a higher-touch program. Perennial Elevate focuses on comprehensive optimization with four physician visits per year, twice-yearly advanced labs, DEXA body-composition scans, VO₂max testing, and continuous monitoring through the patient portal. Perennial Performance is built for serious athletes, layering in exercise genetics, DEXA, an INSCYD metabolic performance profile, and structured training data tracking through platforms like TrainingPeaks. At the top end, Perennial Concierge is for patients who want a fully managed medical relationship, offering year-round physician collaboration, urgent care, plus an increased frequency of labs, scans, and testing. True peace of mind through concierge-style medicine. For those seeking baseline insight before committing to a membership, many tools are available à la carte, paired with physician result interpretation. From lab panels to VO₂max testing, DEXA scans, INSCYD metabolic profiling, urgent care visits, and more. Underpinning every test is a promise for clear explanation, context, and next steps, turning data into tangible plans.

You can’t buy back lost health, but you can invest now and reap decades of benefit. Decline isn’t inevitable.”
Ultimately, all advanced testing and protocols are built on the principles of lifestyle medicine, focusing on exercise, nutrition, sleep, social connectedness, stress management, and avoiding risky behaviors. “Without that foundation, the supplements and medical advice are going to be minimally impactful,” Dr. Mottram states. For fitness guidance beyond the results, Dr. Mottram’s collaboration with local performance experts ensures the medical data translates directly into a training prescription. “It’s the best of both worlds - data-driven optimization plus expert coaching,” shares Dr. Mottram. Now, less than a year and a half after opening, Dr. Mottram is already finding his stride, and the payoff of this dedication is clear: “I get to watch patients reverse aging markers and reclaim their energy,” proving informed direction can yield fast-acting results. With a patient ear and an observant eye, Dr. Mottram represents a new kind of physician, here to empower our community to redefine aging. He serves as a trusted beacon, guiding us through the complexity of health data. Whether training for a race or looking to increase daily energy, Perennial Wellness & Longevity offers a way to measure where you are and deliberately shape where you’re going. Taking the first step to personal wellness is easy, knowing Dr. Mottram has our best interests in mind.

the water standard Inside Middleton’s Water Quality With Bottleless Nation For readers who haven’t heard of Bottleless Nation, what is your mission? “Our mission is to deliver purified water and ice through advanced, sustainable filtration systems. We remove the contaminants commonly found in municipal water, substituting outdated hydration habits with cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally responsible solutions that support both people and the planet.” When you tested tap water for us in Middleton, the findings were surprising. What do you typically find in local tap water? “Middleton’s water meets federal guidelines but carries a higher mix of dissolved content than many residents expect. The aquifers here naturally contain elevated calcium and magnesium. As the water travels through local infrastructure, it can also pick up iron, manganese, copper, and small amounts of pipe sediment. The city adds chlorine for disinfection, which influences taste and aroma. Like most communities in the country today, trace levels of PFAS and microplastics are also present. The contamination of water is not visible to the naked eye; however, when people notice a strong taste, a film on faucets, or residue in appliances, it means water contains a mix of minerals, disinfectants, and dissolved particles. During our demonstration we ran a mild electric current between metal rods to show the difference between untreated tap water

and purified water. When the electricity reacts with dissolved solids, it causes them to re-solidify and become visible. Nothing is added in this process. The color and material which appear are simply the dissolved contaminants that were already present in tap water.” What are the most significant health-related issues with unfiltered tap water? “Chlorine prevents harmful bacteria and viruses, but it has a major effect on taste and smell and offers no health benefit upon consumption. Research continues to evolve regarding PFAS, microplastics, pharmaceuticals, and trace metals present in water supplies nationwide. While naturally occurring minerals are present, many come through at levels higher than what our bodies actually need, and they often arrive alongside metals that can be harmful with long-term exposure.”
What types of improvements do people generally first notice when switching to purified water? “The taste improves immediately… water is smoother, cleaner, and totally free from chlorine aftertaste or mineral heaviness. Coffee and tea taste better. Ice is crystal clear. People drink more water because it’s more enjoyable. Workplaces also see fewer equipment problems because purified water doesn’t leave any scale or sediment behind. The overall hydration experience becomes something people look forward to.” What kind of filtration systems do you commonly recommend for workplaces, and how easy is it to implement? “We use multi-stage that include a combination of sediment filtration, carbon filtration, reverse osmosis, mineral enhancement, and final polishing. They reduce over 99% of the chemicals, metals, PFAS, microplastics, chlorine, and the minerals that create scale buildup. Installation is easy. Our units connect directly to an existing water line, and all maintenance and service are performed by our technicians. We offer systems that provide hot and cold water, ice, sparkling water, and even naturally flavored water without artificial ingredients, sugar, or calories.” For Middleton families reading this at home, what’s one easy way to improve the quality of the water they drink every day? “The best first step is to understand what’s in your water. A quick look at Middleton’s water reports or a simple at-home test can clarify the levels of minerals, disinfectants, and trace contaminants. From there, even a basic filter pitcher can noticeably improve taste by reducing chlorine and odor. Families who want deeper purification can explore multi-stage systems through qualified residential providers.”

How Harbor Athletic Club’s Longevity-focused Programming is Helping Members Stay Strong , Capable, and Thriving at Ever y Age. 20
G E T ACT IV E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
TRAIN FOR LIFE For decades, Harbor Athletic Club has stood on a simple, powerful idea: train for life. Not for aesthetics or trends, but for the strength, mobility, and resilience that allow you to live your life now and into the future. As a daughter of the founder, Sara Johnson, now owner, had the unique perspective of growing up as a witness to this philosophy. “There’s a big difference between the parents who stayed active and the ones who didn’t,” she says. “At some point you realize, ‘I want to pick up my grandkids.’ That kind of strength has to be built.” Today, Harbor still doubles down on that mission with programming designed for longevity. The message is universal: it’s never too late to get stronger, and the choices you make now directly shape your future. Sara shared a selection of programs Harbor offers, designed to help members build strength, protect joints, and improve balance throughout all stages of life.
TRAIN FOR LONGEVITY- WORKSHOP & SERIES
Harbor’s new eight-week flagship longevity program focuses on improving measurable indicators linked to healthy aging, such as
grip strength and VO₂max. “We can’t control everything about aging,” Sara says, “but we can control many aspects of our fitness.” Studies show that grip strength is one of the strongest predictors of healthspan. To build this strength over time, heavier weights, farmer’s carries, and hanging exercises are practiced. By understanding how cardiovascular conditioning directly impacts longterm brain and heart health, participants of all ages find this workshop to provide a useful foundation of knowledge to guide the structure of their improved routine.
STRENGTH FOR BONES
Designed for members with low bone density or osteoporosis, Strength for Bones focuses on progressive strength training to stimulate bone growth. “Twenty years ago, we didn’t think you could build bone later in life,” Sara
says. “But recent research suggests it’s possible with strength training.” Guest speakers share insights into health and nutrition, and DexaFit provides education on bone scans. Participants follow a safe protocol as they work to improve coordination and, under careful coaching, lift heavier weights than they are accustomed to. With increased muscular balance and fall-prevention training, they’re actively reducing their risk of injury.
PILATES FOR POSTURE
If modern life is hard on anything, it’s the spine; phones, driving, sitting, leaning, and daily habits negatively wear on it over time. Harbor’s Pilates for Posture class works to restore alignment, core stability, and mobility that people aren’t even aware they’ve lost. “We see posture issues in everyone,” Sara says. “This class helps people understand how CONTINUED >

21
the spine should be aligned and how to move in a way that protects it.” Participants work through safe spine movements, strengthen deep stabilizing muscles, and improve mobility through the upper back and hips, all of which are essential for moving comfortably as we age.
“TODAY,
HARBOR
STILL
DOUBLES DOWN ON THAT MISSION WITH PROGRAMMING DESIGNED FOR LONGEVITY. THE MESSAGE IS UNIVERSAL: IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO GET STRONGER, AND THE CHOICES YOU MAKE NOW DIRECTLY SHAPE YOUR FUTURE.”

PARKINSON’S TRAINING PROGRAM
Led by certified instructors trained in Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery (PWR), the program helps participants safely build strength, balance, flexibility, and stamina to manage symptoms and maintain independence. PWR Classes meet in person and focus on functional movement, large-amplitude exercises, and coordination drills. PD Fit is offered in both live and virtual formats, so participants can join even if they’re physically restricted. What makes Harbor’s approach unique is its comprehensive perspective. Strength and cardio are at the core, but Sara and their staff also consider sleep, emotional health, stress, and other factors that directly affect a person’s ability to stay active. “If someone isn’t sleeping or is struggling emotionally, that has to be addressed,” Sara says. “Longevity is about your quality of life.” For those interested in learning how to increase not only the number but the quality of their years, Sara (sara@harborathletic. com) is hosting “Training for Longevity” on Tuesday, January 13th at 10:00 AM.

Sundara Inn & Spa Named one of the top “destination spas” in the United States by Condé Nast Traveler, Sundara Inn & Spa, tucked away in Wisconsin Dells, is less than an hour from Middleton. The property is punctuated by suites and villas nestled amid towering pine trees, and you’re guaranteed to unwind during such decadent spa treatments as the River Stone Facial and the Hydrotherapy Scalp Renewal. There’s also the Purifying Bath Ritual, which alternates between a hot and cool plunge pool, and the infinity edge pool that’s particularly idyllic during the winter with a forest view.
The Buckingham Inn Bed & Breakfast Mere minutes away, you’ll discover The Buckingham Inn Bed & Breakfast in downtown Madison. Decked out in beautiful craftsman-style visuals, the B&B’s three suites are known for their spacious spa-like bathrooms, where you can engage in as much self-care as your heart desires, especially as you sink down into the bubble tub. You’ll delight in silk sheets, along with the red and white wine and local chocolates provided with the room. Guests treat themselves to a delicious daily breakfast that’s good for the body and soul. Think: stuffed French toast, locally-grown strawberries, and homemade blueberry scones.
Kohler Waters Spa Just under two hours from Middleton, you’ll find the 5-star rated Kohler Waters Spa. Located next to the historic and luxurious American Club, the surroundings are decidedly chic, with a restorative hydrotherapy circuit (complete with whirlpool and cool plunge pool) and a steam room and sauna, all looking like something straight out of a magazine. There are also world-class spa services, including a Deep Sleep Massage and a Lavender Rain hydrotherapy treatment. It doesn’t hurt that Kohler is a charming destination in itself, with shops and restaurants to add to your itinerary. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/ M I D D L E TO N

Grand Geneva Resort & Spa Even though Lake Geneva, found about an hour and a half from Middleton, is a beloved travel destination, you may find yourself not venturing far from Grand Geneva Resort & Spa. It has everything you’ll need to wind down, including a beautiful spa that’s packed with wellness offerings. Enjoy spa services, like the Nature’s Embrace Body Wrap and the Illuminating Facial Ritual, and don’t miss the other amenities that will make you feel good top to bottom, including the pickleball courts, fitness classes, sound healing, and, of course, you can always hit the slopes at The Mountain Top.
Hidden Serenity Bed & Breakfast Nestled in West Bend is the Hidden Serenity Bed & Breakfast, residing less than two hours from Middleton. The green-shuttered B&B, looking more like a home of yore, sits in a placid forest. The suites, decked out in romantic, rustic touches, offer the perfect place to rest after the complimentary 90-minute spa experience. There’s the warming steam room, the refreshing cold deluge shower, and a sauna as well. You also can’t beat the jetted hot tub and fireplace, all while sizeable picture windows set the scene with forest-side views. For an additional fee, you can take advantage of the massage offerings.
Blue October Spa Perhaps you’re leaning toward a staycation for your spa experience. In this case, look no further than Middleton’s own Blue October Spa. It’s a one-stop shop for a myriad of spa services, such as specialty facials, microdermabrasion, hydrafacials, chemical peels, and body wraps, and the hot stone massage will fix you right up, too. There’s also an infrared sauna to detox the body, and you can even schedule a same-day appointment if you have a hankering to be pampered. You can feel your best in an atmosphere that’s dotted with calming blue details.

We often associate health with physical ability, but true wellness comes from understanding the connection between our mental and physical well-being. The path to physical health
“We watch people’s lives evolve and change overnight. It’s been so rewarding from a human element... The goal is to get everybody better.” is more straightforward compared to the complex journey surrounding mental health, which often leads to a lack of focus in this vital area. For years, Susan Mueller worked in the mental health field, watching a frustrating gap widen: patients in need faced agonizing delays in finding care. Driven by a desire to be an advocate for streamlining the path to wellness, she founded Relief Mental Health in 2020 to deliver immediate and accessible services, ensuring no one had to make that difficult first phone call only to be turned away or left waiting weeks. What sets Relief Mental Health apart is its diverse team of psychiatrists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, who can provide a combination of
traditional medication management therapy with highly effective, innovative treatments. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive method that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate and regulate neural pathways in the brain, offering a non-medication option for treatment-resistant depression and OCD. SPRAVATO® is an FDA-approved intranasal esketamine treatment offering a fast-acting solution for severe depression. New patients undergo a comprehensive evaluation with a provider to examine the full scope of their medical history in conjunction with lifestyle factors. Relief’s holistic approach to evaluating new patients ensures that each person is matched with the most appropriate level of care. They understand that CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/ M I D D L E TO N

patient input and active collaboration in their care plans are vital in guiding their approach to providing services that genuinely reflect each patient’s needs By ensuring they accept most major insurance plans, Medicare, and Tricare, Relief removes significant logistical barriers, making advanced, individualized care accessible to more people in our community. Susan reminds us that mental health is health; something that requires ongoing care just like our physical well-being. With a belief that healing is a community effort, a call to Relief is always met with meaningful support and real solutions.
