Hello Readers,

My name is Alexis Venter and I am the Publication Director of this magazine. Welcome to what I consider our cutest issue of Middleton City Lifestyle, where we shine a spotlight on the little ones in our lives: our kids and pets! Although Cole and I have not yet experienced the blessings and joys of parenthood, we deeply cherish our roles as an aunt and uncle. The little ones in our lives bring us more fulfillment, laughter, and fun than we could have ever imagined! Thinking of them as we put together this issue sparked even more excitement for the day we get to plan our own imaginative birthday parties and bake our own homemade pet treats.
Middleton & Waunakee do a wonderful job of fostering beautiful, family-oriented communities, and we are thrilled to highlight a few of the events and partners that make this possible. In the coming pages, you’ll read about our very own Jordan Gale, the owner of Kairos Chiropractic, whose mission is to provide hope and healing and create opportunities for families to flourish. You’ll also hear from Julie Bowker who helps create beautiful living spaces for our families, and we’ll celebrate Middleton’s annual Good Neighbor Festival that brings so much joy to the community.
The kiddos in our community are truly the brightest part of our lives. It is our most sincere hope that this issue inspires us all to see life through their eyes and enjoy all the sweetness and wonder it brings.

PEDIATRIC AND PRENATAL CARE AT KAIROS CHIROPRACTIC

““Instead of fixing sick adults, why can’t we raise them as healthy as we can and give them the best start in life?”

Located in the heart of downtown Middleton, Kairos Chiropractic aims to serve the littlest members of our community and those who care for them. While completing her chiropractic school, Dr. Jordan Gale became passionate about pediatric, prenatal, and nervous system adjustments.
“The first kid I worked on was such a joy. And then something clicked in my brain that if we’re really focused on root causes, why not go up the stream further to take care of pregnancy and then infants and raise them healthy? Instead of fixing sick adults, why can’t we raise them as healthy as we can and give them the best start in life?”

Dr. Jordan Gale is a Wisconsin with a passion for Chiropractic work. She is Webster Certified and continues her education with extensive training from the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) as well as through The Pediatric Experience (PX) & mentorship from one of the largest pediatric chiropractic offices in the country.
Jordan’s space is designed for kids. Including a custom mural, play area, and plenty of room to “get the wiggles out” before treatments.
“The little ones, their adjustments look nothing like an adult adjustment. A baby is getting these little sustained contact moments, it’s like checking the ripeness of an avocado, very gentle and very specific.”
And these little movements can have a big impact.
“I have quite a few patients in the twoyear-old range that have chronic ear infections. They know the routine of getting adjusted and it’s such a joy to have them come in. And the reports back from mom are, ‘They had a fever, but it didn’t turn into an infection.’ They’re getting better.”

My goal is to just make everything functional, affordable, and low maintenance.
In the dog days of summer, Middleton and Waunakee residents are looking to spend more time outside. And what space is more convenient than our outdoor patios and porches? A good porch welcomes people to the home. And yet, designing the spaces just outside our doors can be easily overlooked by the larger interior design community. This is where Julie Bowker, “The Porch Girl” comes in. Her interest in porches started early. As a child, her grandfather built a playhouse for her and her three sisters.
“We had a porch and I was always the one out there decorating it, putting chairs out, flowers, a wreath, and honestly, it just kind of took off from there.”
Now, Julie takes her childhood passion and helps people all over the Midwest make the best use of their outdoor spaces. When someone with a less-than-beautiful porch first reaches out, they’ll send a picture of their space and Julie provides a quote and design custom to their needs. Using Canva, she’s able to help clients see what their space can look like before even setting foot on their porch.
“My goal is to make the whole process the least amount of work for them, and I take that into consideration when choosing products. A lot of people who reach out to me don’t want real flowers and don’t
want real greens because they don’t want to take care of them. I’ll do real flowers if they want, but if not, I have some really great companies that I found that make faux flowers. My goal is to just make everything functional, affordable, and low maintenance.”
Julie works hard to find materials that can handle Wisconsin weather, along with repurposing items her clients might already have on hand. You may have a chair that’s sturdy but needs a new cushion. Or a sign that makes you smile. All sorts of things help a porch come together once there’s an expert to guide the process. Beyond function, a porch upgrade can have an immediate impact on the relationship people have with their homes, especially this time of year.
“People want to spend time out there. They want to come home from work in the summer and go spend time outside, not inside. The weather’s beautiful. At the house I worked on yesterday, my client was sitting on her newly decorated patio before I left!”
Changing the decor of an outdoor space is about more than aesthetics. A front porch is the first “welcome” to a home. Giving some design attention to that space can soften the whole experience of a home. When people are out on their porches,

My client was sitting on her newly decorated patio before I left! “ ”
neighborhoods feel friendlier, and that cycle of more usable space can have a huge impact on people’s everyday lives.
“I have a girlfriend who lives two houses down, and last year, they completely redid the front of their house. It was a year project, and the whole time she was like I can’t wait for you to do my porch. I ended up doing it on Mother’s Day, late morning when I knew she wouldn’t be home. When she texted me, she was crying. She was like, I just pulled up, and it’s so beautiful.”
Looking to be moved to tears by the beauty of your outdoor spaces? The first step might be in your cleaning cabinet. “The first thing I do when I go to a client’s house is I clean. I clean the windows, I sweep the porch.”

Beyond the powers of a good sweep, Julie stresses the impact of simple changes
“A wreath, a doormat, maybe layered over an outdoor rug, maybe a pot with flowers. Those little things will change the space automatically.”
Porches and patios big and small are really about making the most of the space you have. Simple things like seasonal refreshes (another service The Porch Girl offers) can go a long way towards loving all of your home, all year long. And who doesn’t need a little more leisure in their life?
“When these homes have beautiful spaces, you want to fill them. When I see a house with a plain porch, I just think ‘It has so much potential.”

A list of exciting new tricks to teach your puppy
ARTICLE BAILEY MORRIS
We created a list of some fun tricks to teach your puppy! Whether you just welcomed a new furry friend into your home or you’re teaching an old dog new tricks, you and your pet are sure to have a fun time! Spending time playing and training with your pet makes for a great bonding experience! Don’t forget to reward them with some delicious dog treats when they successfully do a trick. My pup’s personal favorite treats are chicken, peanut butter, and carrots. We hope you and your pup have a great time learning the tricks on this list!
Get your dog to bark naturally (try ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door). Once they bark, say ‘speak’ and reward them.
Have your dog sit and then tell them to stay. Hold your hand out with your palm toward their nose in the stop position. If they hold the position for a second or two, praise them and reward them with a treat. Keep repeating this and gradually having them stay longer.
Hold your hand out in front of your dog. Your dog may do some experimenting trying to figure out what you want. Once they put their paw in your hand, immediately praise and reward them.

TAKE A PAGE FROM CHILDREN’S LITERATURE FOR CLASSIC BIRTHDAY PARTY THEMES

Whether seeking philosophical guidance or deciding what’s for dinner, recipes for life can be found in literature. We learn from great minds that came before us, and that’s true when planning a birthday party. Take a page from classical children’s books to find themes that combine playfulness, colorful illustration and words to inspire food, décor and games that will tickle the fancy of youthful guests, with a central activity of reading aloud. Published in 1963, “Where the Wild Things Are” is one of the most recognizable children’s picture books of all time. Writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak created a universal story about mastering fears. Dressed in his wolf costume, and sent to his room for creating havoc at home, young Max travels to an island of Wild Things where he becomes king. It’s a story about childhood resilience and mastery of fears, but simply observed, the fantastical book provides a colorful segue to an afternoon birthday romp in the park. When it comes to wild things, enjoy inspiration from our own party, plus we’ve compiled some ideas for ways to help the rumpus begin based on other beloved titles:

“Regardless of the theme, be sure to leave time to read a favorite passage from the central book of choice.”

“WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE” BY MAURICE SENDAK
As a costume party, have guests dress as their favorite wild thing. A crown-making activity allows everyone to be King (or Queen) for a day.
GAME: Wild Rumpus Dance Party. A twist on the Freeze Dance, guests dance and prance freely until the music stops. An extra step means that player is out. A winner is the last “beast” to stand still after multiple rounds of play.
“CURIOUS GEORGE” BY MARGRET AND H. A. REY
Gather a barrel of monkeys, plus your favorite Man in the Yellow Hat, for a party where guests can go bananas. George always seems to wander, so try a scavenger hunt that meanders from clue to clue. Banana cupcakes, banana bread, and a tower of bananas add a healthy touch to the dessert table.
GAME: Monkey in the Middle. Create a circle with one guest in the middle. Toss a ball, or soft monkey toy, across the circle without the monkey in the middle catching it.
“DON’T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS!” BY MO WILLEMS
Though an unlikely party host, pigeon—with his wide-eyed enthusiasm—sets a party tone. Eat “bird seed” trail mix and hot dogs (inspired by another Willems title, “The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!”). Printable images of Pigeon lend themselves to thematic and whimsical decorations.
GAME: Red Light, Green Light. With guests as “bus drivers,” they make their way to the station/finish line with a twist on this classic party game.
Regardless of the theme, be sure to leave time to read a favorite passage from the central book of choice. Give books as party favors or add a layer of philanthropy by having guests bring their favorite book to donate to a local nonprofit.

As temperatures rise, children race to the freezer for this frosty treat or wait anxiously for the approach of the musical ice cream truck. Making homemade popsicles is a fun, kidfriendly activity.
