LIFESTYLE LETTER
Fresh Starts and New Pages There are so many metaphors for a new year, some of my favorites being literary or writer themed. Please indulge me in one—if our lives were written in a book, each new year would be a new chapter. That would make the new year, the beginning of January—these moments right now—a fresh new page. For me, a blank page has always been inspiring and intimidating. Intimidating because blank pages need to be filled. Inspiring because the possibilities are endless. A blank page can be hopeful and the start of something new. Welcome to the start of 2025, how will you fill your pages? I’m brand new to Mesa, my family moved here only a few months ago. While most people wait for a new year to restart or try something new, I’ve been living a world of new for months now, every day filled with a chance to explore, discover, and fill the pages of life with learning what this fantastic city has to offer. I’m learning that while a new year brings the perfect opportunity for a fresh start, we don’t have to wait around for a big holiday to try something new. That’s what moving to Mesa has been for me and my family. Every day we explore new places, meet new people, and are trying things we never would have thought to try back in our home state. Fresh starts don’t have to be given through a holiday, they can be picked up whenever we need. Perhaps I’m putting too much thought into this, I’m also the girl who thinks Mondays are the best day of the week. As we look to a new year and days filled with possibilities, I hope you try to fill the pages with exploring everything Mesa has to offer. Sometimes, when we are so used to our routines and our schedules, we forget to take the time to appreciate the things around us. As you flip through the pages of this magazine, I hope you find something to try, some place to explore, or something new to do. Mesa is a pretty great place to live and we strive to showcase its amazingness in these pages.

SCOTT STALLINGS’
WORKOUT Like many impressionable kids with giddy enthusiasm for their favorite sport, Scott Stallings discovered his interest for golf at the young age of 3. But it was the “aha moment” for his LOVE of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors. Upon realizing “that Woods wasn’t that much older than him,’’ Scott set himself into overdrive to “get it together” and tapped into his natural drive to be one of the best. He trained his way through achieving allstate golfer and Dean’s List status in high school. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer. In 2016 he learned he had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and acute adrenal fatigue. It was a result of some unhealthy nutritional habits, both of which affected his ability to continue effectively as a professional athlete.

With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night. “I came to the realization that it was no one’s fault but my own. The excuses and finger pointing led back to me, and once you take ownership, you take power in that,” Scott says. “The voice within gave me some scary realizations that I always hated the doctor, and that they would tell me something was wrong. I learned a little information goes a long way, and that saved my health. Make one change today, and make another one tomorrow, and you’ll never look back.” Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed. “You only get one body,” he says. Luckily for Scott, he didn’t have an overwhelming, crazy life overhaul. Instead, he was able to find one small thing, delivering simple systematic changes in his workout that led to his improvement in fitness and quality of life. He still was driven to be one the best PGA Tour players and the best family guy he could be, and he would do all of the discovery, the surgeries, and the daily changes all over again to continue living his best life. “I legitimately have some great people push me and stay around me,” Scott says. Scott has traveled the world over, playing on some of the best courses around, from Augusta National twice, to courses across Asia, Europe, Australia, and the hope to cross the Middle East and more stunning destinations in New Zealand off his global travel list. His next “bucket list” trip? Today, Scott happily shares healthy time with his wife and kids and is leading up The Scott Stallings Kids Play Free Junior Golf Initiative, a partnership with the Tennessee Golf Foundation to bring free junior golf to the Knoxville area.
STALLINGS’ PRIMARY EQUIPMENT: KETTLEBELLS Cast iron or cast steel ball with a handle attached to the top; ideal for exercises that combine cardio, strength and flexibility training.
THE WORKOUT BASICS:
BARS AND WEIGHTS A long iron bar on which weight plates are placed. Weights come in a variety of styles, including weight plates, barbells and dumbbells. DUMBBELLS Short barbells, usually held in each hand MEDICINE BALLS Weighted balls roughly the diameter of the shoulders that are used for strength training and rehabilitation
HIS TOP EXERCISES: KETTLEBELL POWER SNATCH: Uses ground force to leverage the kettlebell upward, then the shoulder, arm and back support the weight as it gets pushed overhead. Also a great cardio exercise and trains the body for a good golf swing. KETTLEBELL HALO: Start by holding the kettlebell upside down at chest height, then lift the weight to head height and rotate it around the head like a halo in both directions. This exercise focuses on shoulder mobility— which is important for a good golf swing— and warms up the muscles and soft tissue around the shoulder girdle. CLEAN TO LUNGE: First, the kettlebell is lifted from the ground to shoulder height. Then, the foward lunge loads weight into the legs one at a time, which happens from the backswing to the downswing. The exercise increases strength in calves and forearms, which is essential for a powerful swing.

“A fresh new year can bring fresh ideas, fresh plans, and maybe even some fresh new goals.”
16
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS
Looking at a Healt hier 2025! The start of a new year always brings the feeling of a fresh start. A fresh new year can bring fresh ideas, fresh plans, and maybe even some fresh new goals. A very popular resolution in the new year is to get healthier. If that is your goal, you’ll want to hear what Gina Van Luven—owner of Prime IV Hydration & Wellness and a board-certified health coach—has to say. Gina believes that stress can play a huge part in overall health, so she shared her tried and true remedies to help manage stress.
QUESTION: WHAT WOULD BE THE FIRST STEP IN TRYING TO MANAGE STRESS?
Get more sleep! Most people need 7-9 hours of quality sleep, which means going past REM and into deep sleep. There are wearable products that can track sleep quality, if you’re wondering where you are with your sleep.
QUESTION: WHAT ARE SOME ASPECTS THAT ARE PROBABLY OVERLOOKED BUT CAN REALLY HELP MANAGE STRESS?
Movement—Stagnation is the opposite of health. Get moving any way you can, whether it’s chair exercises, a walk, or something more vigorous. You can try “grounding”— walking barefoot in some grass (as long as it is pesticide-free), dirt, or sand— to help to calm the sympathetic nervous system. If you can’t go barefoot, just walking in nature with trees can elicit a similar response. Try some deep breathing–taking several very deep breaths— throughout the day, it can help calm the nervous system.
QUESTION: HOW CAN PRIME IV HELP?
Better stress management leads to a healthier immune system, better mood and concentration, fewer symptoms, and feeling more balanced overall. At Prime IV Hydration & Wellness we offer IV and injection therapies to deliver nutrients directly to your blood stream and hydrate the body. Ask about our 1-hour Vacation Experience in our zen room in a zero-gravity massage chair to help relax your mind and body.

When you drive down Rio Salado Pkwy, it is hard to miss the signs that say “Cubs Stadium” with arrows directing you to Sloan Park. In fact, it was one of the first things I noticed when I moved here last May. Sloan Park celebrated their 10 year anniversary last spring training, but Mesa natives will be quick to point out that the Cubs have been in Mesa since 1952. history to be explored with the Cubs and Mesa. It is a history still in the making if the success of Sloan Park is anything to go by. “The fans are the best,” says Justin Piper, general manager of Sloan Park. The fans are the key part to the success of Sloan Park. In fact, the fan experience (and the fans) is the number one focus for the Cubs Organization. The experience at Sloan Park has been designed to replicate the experience at Wrigley Field. You can see similarities between the spring training field and the home field of the Cubs before you enter the stadium, starting with the giant red marquee sign. Did you know you can have a custom message put on the marquee? This free feature is just one of the many ways the organization puts fans and their experience first at Sloan Park. Over recent years, the event spaces have been renovated and updated. There are suites at Sloan Park, but they are limited in number which was done intentionally. The suites offered are the traditional suite experience that you might be familiar with at sporting events. However, if you are looking for group outings at Sloan Park, skip the suite and opt for the party decks or the Budweiser Rooftop. The party decks are outdoors and allow for everybody to enjoy baseball games the way they were meant to be enjoyed— outside. The party decks are at first and third base and— along with the Budweiser Rooftop (over left field)— offer intimate environments, great views, and a great way to bring everybody together for a baseball game. The rooftop at Sloan Park is reminiscent of the rooftops at Wrigley Field, too. While spring training at Sloan park is designed to honor the Cubs organization and brand, catching a baseball game there during spring training is something that anybody can enjoy. There are fifteen teams that call Arizona home during spring training, including the Athletics, the Guardians, the Diamondbacks, and the Giants to name a few. These fifteen teams make up the Cactus League, which is what they call the CONTINUED >

spring training league. These games feature minor and pro players, all getting ready for the upcoming season. It isn’t just baseball games you can catch at Sloan Park. The entire Cubs system is there getting ready for the upcoming season, from the players, to writers, to networks,—spring training is something to experience. Not only can you catch baseball games but you can catch some practice sessions too! Even the pros need practice and to prove it, the Cubs post the workout schedules of the players on the Sloan Park website so fans can come and see these players get ready for not only the spring training games but the upcoming baseball season.
When talking with Piper about Sloan Park, it was easy to see his love for his job, this park, and the Mesa community shine through everything he said. Piper has been in Arizona with the Cubs since 2013. He has quickly become a fan of Mesa, citing downtown Mesa as a favorite spot. He loves our diverse community and all the food options. Some of his favorite things to do at work are: taking a walk around the ballpark , observing guest experience, seeing people enjoy the game, kids on the berm, and the dedicated fans keeping score old-school style. Piper believes that you don’t have to be a die-hard baseball fan to enjoy the experience of Cactus League.

Everyone dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get our time and attention. Follow our nine tips for transforming and elevating your closet. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying these guidelines will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.
01
FACE CLOTHES THE SA ME DIRECTION
It may seem silly, but when dealing with a small space, little things count. Hanging all clothes the same direction is a no-brainer for continuity in your closet.
03 02
USE REAL ESTATE WISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. A large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.
04
HIDDEN STOR AGE Hidden storage is a game changer in keeping a closet visually clean. Tuck folded clothes behind closed cabinet doors if the space is multipurpose. The floor-toceiling built-ins in Keri’s closet contain folded clothes, athleisure and other items she needs as she gets ready each day. Tuck away the least-used items: Use hidden storage and the very top of the closet for out-of-season items and stuff only worn a few times a year.
NEGATIVE SPACE
Using space efficiently is important, but keep in mind every good design includes some negative space. For instance, consider adding built-ins on the long wall of your closet but keep the short wall open with a mirror.
05
ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR
Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.
CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / M E SA A Z
25
06
UPGR ADED HANGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner!
07
BAG & SHOE STOR AGE Alternate the way shoes are facing. This ultimately helps fit more on each row and provide a visually appealing way to display those prized possessions. Everyone understands the frustration of searching for that one clutch when rushing out for the evening. Bags benefit from a space all their own. Get clear container storage for small bags and purses so you can locate and access them easily.
08
M AKE A STATEMENT Why use an armchair when you have room for a sofa? Slide up a stool and colorful area rug to complete the look. If you have excessive wall space, consider a mini gallery wall or a statement wall with wallpaper to polish things off.

BUILDING HEALTHIER HEAR FROM NASM-CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER ABOUT ESTABLISHING THE BEST HABITS ARTICLE BY KRISTIN BURNELL
The new year is a classic kickoff to start fresh and build many resolutions that we all hope stick around. How many times do your resolutions fall through each year? It can be challenging to build new habits and switch up routines if you’re looking for a change. That’s why we rounded up the best advice to establishing habits and making them stay for good. We spoke with Danielle Johnston, National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)-certified personal trainer and aspiring kinesiologist, who broke down her top tips to maintaining healthy habits this new year.
28
S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
START WITH A SMALL HABIT AND MAKE IT SOMETHING YOU ENJOY
HABITS
Think 1-3 things maximum and then give yourself at least a month or two to apply the change. If you like to eat and cook, maybe try a new recipe or browse a cookbook in the library or bookstore for inspiration. If you like fashion, maybe try cleaning out a section of your closet (i.e. tops, bottoms, shoes, etc) to make way for 1 new piece. If you like being outdoors, maybe you try adding in just a 5 minute walk down the road.
IF YOU MISS A DAY, TRY AGAIN
If you miss a day or make a mistake with whatever resolution you’re working on, take that next opportunity to try again. Danielle uses the goal to eat healthier as an example. Health can be interpreted in many different ways but if you can take the small first step of looking at ingredients, that alone can make a world’s difference in the recipe you use so maybe you don’t even have to alter or substitute it. Or if your goal is to snack less but one day you snack more, don’t wave the flag and sabotage your efforts. Take a minute to breathe through the moment and then move on, enjoying the ebb and flow of health instead of going all in or nothing. Starting small allows you to adjust everyday habits that will, with time, transition to lifestyle changes.
CREATE 3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESOLUTIONS
Danielle says to create 1 health resolution, 1 personal resolution, and 1 professional resolution as it is the best format to better yourself in multiple realms instead of just physical health. Too often, we get caught up in this “New Year New Me” mindset and create a list of things you want to change or start doing. But as they get lost in the busy to-do list of life and we forget,
“The new year is a classic kickoff to start fresh and build many resolutions that we all hope stick around.” we can also feel like a failure and revert to “I’ll try again tomorrow or next year.” But what if you don’t have to start over, just keep going.
TRACK YOUR PROGRESS AND VISUALIZE YOUR FUTURE
Whether you keep a notebook of your habit building, or keep track on your phone, it is important to acknowledge the personal progress made. This will also help you see the future that you want to build as you make more desirable changes in your life. If you want to track how you feel after working out, it will serve as a reflection on the progress made through what has been written down. This will encourage you to continue pushing for your goals!
