Wrapped in Gratitude: Celebrating One Year Together!

As I sit down to write this month’s letter, it’s hard to believe that we’re celebrating one full year since the launch of  Mesa City Lifestyle! Our very first issue hit mailboxes last December, and what an incredible year it’s been.

From the beginning, I shared how excited I was for the chance to tell the stories of the people, businesses, and events that make our community so special. In our digital world, there’s something magical about holding a publication in your hands, a sense of nostalgia and connection that feels increasingly rare today. Print has a lasting power, and it’s been my mission to create something meaningful for our community, something you look forward to opening each month, enjoy reading, and feel inspired by.

As we mark this milestone, I want to share a heartfelt thank you. To our readers, thank you for welcoming us into your homes and for your continued support. To our incredible partners, thank you for trusting us to tell your stories and share your businesses with this community. You are the heartbeat of every issue.

A very special thank you to our amazing editor, Ashleigh Underwood, whose brilliance, creativity, and care bring these pages to life each month. This publication wouldn’t exist without her. She’s not only talented beyond words but has become a true blessing in my life.

To Sonja Stafford, whose artistic eye and photography have graced so many of our covers, thank you for capturing the beauty of Mesa and the people who make it shine. And to my husband, Adam, thank you for your endless support and the connections you’ve helped foster with local businesses that have made Mesa City Lifestyle what it is today.

As we head into the holidays, I’m filled with gratitude and excitement for what’s ahead. Thank you, Mesa, for making this dream such a joy. Here’s to another year of stories, connection, and community.

Cheers to the season and to another wonderful year ahead!

Chef

Hua—bringing taste and luxury to the holiday season

This holiday season eliminate stress by going out! The Global Ambassador— a Michlin Key holding boutique hotel in Phoenix—features six different restaurants to explore, enjoy, and elevate your meals. We got a chance to chat with the executive chef, Jason Hua, to learn more about this nearby gem.

Photography by Katie Levine

Those closest to him would describe Chef Hua as determined, fun, and someone who is good with numbers. He sees himself as focused and motivated. We would like to add humble and kind to the list. He is incredibly friendly and approachable; you would never know that he was part of seven Michlin Stars throughout his culinary career.

Chef Hua grew up in L.A. with parents in high powered careers. He knew he wanted to be a chef as a teenager, but his parents wanted him to go to college instead. He did both—going to Boston University to study finance and working in kitchens while out there. He shares that he thought he was a good cook, despite a cooking fail involving hot oil while trying to make ice cream tempera once. He got into that first restaurant and discovered that he didn’t know 90% of the ingredients around him. He focused on learning, not one to let pride get in the way, and learned everything he could.

That learning and humbleness paid off, he would move on to New York (inspired by seeing most great restaurants on popular lists being in NY) and work at Jean Georges. He was there when they received three Michlin Stars. He made his way through Europe, working in kitchens in London, Spain, and France. The accomplishments don’t end there; he was even invited to cook for the Mexican government.

At Global Ambassador, you’ll find the most delicious options like—théa, the Mediterranean Rooftop restaurant—Le Âme, the Parisian Steakhouse—Pink Dolphin, the poolside Mexican grill—and The Lobby Bar, where you can find live music on weekends. If you’re looking for more of a coffee shop, check out Le Market. The Global Ambassador is the perfect place for celebrating, a date night out, or to grab a quick bite.

THE POWER OF LIGHT

Magic

A dazzling look at the woman redefining fine jewelry with heart, hustle, and holiday sparkle.

of Myranda

I had the chance to visit with Myranda, who is somehow even more beautiful inside than she is out, to talk about her incredible passion and growing brand. Though we’d met a few times before, her cover photoshoot was our first real chance to visit — and it couldn’t have been more memorable. When the blouse she’d brought for the shoot wasn’t quite working, she looked at me with that big smile and said, “Yours is great—can I wear it?!” Minutes later, we were swapping tops like lifelong friends. It was a literal shirt-off-my-back moment for someone I was just getting to know, but I knew right then she’d do the same in a heartbeat. That’s who Myranda is — fun, fierce, kind, and the kind of woman who brings out the best in everyone she meets.

Here’s what she shared about her journey, her holiday favorites, and the magic behind Myranda Fine Jewelry.

LET’S START WITH THE SPARKLE. WHAT FIRST DREW YOU TO THE WORLD OF FINE JEWELRY?

My world was very hard growing up, so jewelry became a beautiful escape. I was fortunate to grow up surrounded by diversity; it gave me drive and hunger to succeed. I fell deeply in love with the beauty of jewelry design and making, and it became my passion and purpose.

FROM ESTATE JEWELRY TO CUSTOM DESIGN TO DIAMOND BROKERING, YOUR EXPERTISE SPANS SO MUCH. HOW DID YOUR CAREER EVOLVE, AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR OWN BRAND?

I actually started my own brand over 15 years ago, but for a long time I was scared to take the full leap and go all in. It all began from my home, where I’d have 30 to 45 cars a day pulling up for appointments. My sister Monica, and my right-hand girl Hayden gave me the extra push to go all in. In January 2024, we moved into a small 200-square-foot office, and

that’s where we built the new Myranda Fine Jewelry Studio—one dollar and tons of hard work at a time. When we opened, we expected around 80 to 100 people and instead had lines wrapped around the building. Since then, we’ve exploded. It has been the true American dream!

YOUR CLIENTS COME FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, BUT YOU’RE PROUDLY BASED HERE IN ARIZONA. WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT THAT?

Arizona is our mothership. As a native, I’m so proud to have our headquarters here. Arizona is booming with growth, low taxes, and a community full of transplants. It’s one of the top five relocation states, and we love celebrating life’s moments here, from birthdays to engagements to heirloom redesigns.

“WE’VE HELPED PEOPLE CELEBRATE LOVE, SURVIVE HEARTBREAK, AND FIND NEW BEGINNINGS THROUGH A SINGLE, MEANINGFUL PIECE OF JEWELRY. EVERY GEM TELLS A STORY — A LITTLE PIECE OF SOMEONE’S HEART THEY GET TO WEAR FOREVER.”

EVERY JEWELRY DESIGNER HAS THAT ONE UNFORGETTABLE PIECE. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE?

I adore our Candy Gemstone Collection. It’s full of bright and pastel sapphires hand-selected from Sri Lanka, and they’re absolutely breathtaking. I’m also proud of our Chunky Monkey Collection, where we take old diamonds and create stunning collage-style pieces. It’s one of our most sought-after collections.

TELL US ABOUT A CLIENT STORY THAT’S STUCK WITH YOU.

There are so many, but one that still moves me is about a young man who lost both his mother and grandmother, the women who raised him. He brought us their rings, and we combined them into a single heirloom engagement ring. He cried, we all cried, it was pure love in a piece of jewelry. He’s still a client today, even from out of state.

THE HOLIDAYS ARE ALL ABOUT SPARKLE. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE GIFT IDEAS OR TRENDS THIS SEASON?

I’m always thrilled for the holidays! My go-to gifts are timeless tennis bracelets and classic diamond studs, starting at just $450. Another favorite trend this season is our custom diamond nameplate necklaces. They’ve made us famous worldwide, and we can even match your very own handwriting or personal font.

YOU’VE BUILT SUCH A LOYAL FOLLOWING. WHAT KEEPS PEOPLE COMING BACK?

Honestly, I still tear up thinking about it. I thank God and the universe every day for our incredible clients. They come back because we truly care. My team is one of the most passionate and genuine groups in the business. We’ve also made fine jewelry more accessible by offering affordable luxury through in-house design, transparent pricing, and exceptional quality. It’s a simple, joyful experience from start to finish.

FINALLY, HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE YOUR OWN MILESTONES?

I celebrate with my team. It’s our success, not just mine. And the more successful we become, the more we give back. You get what you give in life, and I truly believe we need to be the change we want to see.

You can join Myranda and her team at their Chandler, Arizona showroom for the Holiday Open House on December 5–6 from noon to 5 p.m., featuring raffles, champagne, and a special appearance by celebrity guest @thediamondsgirl .

When We Say We Travel, We Mean It!

Whether it’s setting up your wedding in a serene forest or by a picturesque river, we’ll be there to make your special day unforgettable. No destination is too far for us to bring our exceptional service to you.

“We got married 10.07.2023 in Strawberry Arizona at the Rim! Josh & Kasandra went up & beyond to make our day SO special! We got married in the woods with a limited power supply and limited notice for the exact location of our wedding! (Because it’s the middle of the woods and you never know!)

They took the time to meet us at our wedding location on the Rim days before the wedding! They took the time to ensure we were happy with the food and if we had enough to eat! Their crew was so helpful in arranging the tables and even table settings! They even packed our leftovers which we are still enjoying today!!

A huge shout out to Kasandra who took the time to help me breathe, take a moment to myself, and let me know it was my turn to walk down the aisle from afar! Thank you both so much! Our day wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for you guys! We would %100 recommend The Local Catering company as your choice for catering!!!” - Olivia Hammond

Home for the Holidays

REALTOR ADAM HETHERINGTON ON FAMILY, HOME, AND HOLIDAY TRADITIONS

MANY PEOPLE THINK THE HOLIDAYS ARE A QUIET TIME FOR REAL ESTATE. WHAT’S YOUR TAKE?

Honestly, some of the best buys I’ve seen have happened over the holidays. Serious buyers and sellers are still out there, often because of life changes or year-end goals. For buyers, that can mean great opportunities. And for sellers, I always say if someone’s touring your home during the holidays, they’re serious.

YOU’VE BEEN IN REAL ESTATE FOR QUITE SOME TIME. WHAT FIRST DREW YOU TO IT?

I’m actually a second-generation Realtor. Both of my parents worked in the industry, so real estate talk was just part of dinner growing up. That early exposure gave me a real appreciation for how much impact a home can have on someone’s life. That’s what keeps me passionate all these years later.

WE’VE BEEN HEARING MORE ABOUT CANADIAN SELLERS IN ARIZONA. TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH INTERNATIONAL CLIENTS. Working with international clients has taught me a lot about the nuances of cross-border transactions. For example, foreign sellers fall under FIRPTA, and depending on the offer’s language, they could have 10% or 15% withheld by the IRS. That’s a big difference. I’ve built great relationships with accountants who specialize in foreign taxation so my clients always have the right guidance.

Adam Hetherington

DO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY HAVE ANY FAVORITE HOLIDAY TRADITIONS?

I’m originally from Manitoba, Canada, so we love heading north to enjoy the snow, go tobogganing, skate on outdoor rinks, play games, and spend time with family and friends. When we stay in Arizona, we love showing our Canadian family all the fun here — hiking, catching the rodeo at the Hitchin’ Post, and soaking up the sunshine. My wife goes all out with the decorating, and we always attend a Christmas Eve candlelight service before hosting dinner at our home.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE IN REAL ESTATE?

I’d say hardworking and always available. I don’t believe in selling a home; I think the right home sells itself. My job is to match it to the right person. When I’m representing sellers, it’s about strategy: price, timing, repairs, whatever it takes to meet their goals. Every deal is different, and that’s what keeps it fun.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT TOURING HOMES OR NEGOTIATING CONTRACTS, WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU UNWINDING?

Usually with my wife watching one of our four kids play sports. I’m trying to soak up every minute before they’re out of high school. If I have a rare day off, I love a round of golf with friends or a quiet night by the fire with a drink. I’m also active in the Mesa Chamber of Commerce and love connecting with and supporting other local business owners.

FOR ANYONE CONSIDERING A MOVE IN THE COMING YEAR, WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D GIVE?

Give me a call! It doesn’t cost a thing to have a conversation, and it really does matter who you work with. For most people, a home is their biggest life investment, so make sure you’re working with someone who has the experience to guide you!

“Whether we’re up in snowy Manitoba or here in sunny Arizona, the holidays for us are all about family, connection, and making memories at home.”
