WVHS, partnering with Idaho Humane Society and McPaws Animal Shelter, has successfully rehomed many dogs, but 25 huskies still await adoption. Huskies, though appealing, need ample exercise and training. WVHS is actively seeking temporary caregivers and encouraging families to adopt these special huskies during the 9-month project. Cre at i ng a ‘Paw’sit ive I mpac t How Dogtopia Foundation is Changing Lives for Veterans and Kids Dogtopia of Boise-Greenbelt, located in Garden City, offers dog daycare, boarding, training, and spa services. But Dogtopia, which has locations across the country, also aims to impact dogs and people positively through the Dogtopia Foundation and its programs. Service Dogs for Veterans matches veterans with a canine companion who can support them. Since 2017, the Foundation has raised $2.57M to support 381 service dogs, with 161 service dog-and-veteran teams successfully graduating the program. Boise-Greenbelt Pet Parent Relationship Manager Tyler Proctor said the Idaho location just raised its first $6K and was able to sponsor its first dog. “From the moment I laid eyes on Maverick, I knew that he was exactly what I needed,” retired Sergeant Jeanette R. Nichols, a USA Paralympic Track & Field Team Member, said in a testimonial. The Dogtopia Foundation sponsored the match between Maverick and Nichols. “He has made an incredible difference in the quality of my life.”

According to statistics Proctor provided, a service dog can cost upwards of $30K. This leaves a dog out of reach for many suffering veterans dealing with PTSD, depression, loneliness, and anxiety. Local dogs are also having an impact on kids through Dogtopia’s Youth Literacy Programs. “We will take kids who are under their reading levels and have them either come into our facility or a Humane Society,” Proctor said. “They then have a chance to read to the dogs and practice their reading skills.” The kids gain confidence from a dedicated listener, and the dogs get to enjoy a good story and possibly some belly rubs. The Foundation also recruits dogs and their owners for therapy teams. Through Pet Partners, the teams visit schools to offer the benefits of dog-assisted interventions. The Peregrine Fund IN FLIG HT FOR MORE THAN HALF A CE NTURY

WHOOOOSH! Did you see that?! Well, you may very well have missed it… because it was diving at over 200 miles per hour, cascading dramatically from over 1,000 feet in the air! Known as the fastest bird in the world, the Peregrine Falcon is a master predator, despite weighing hardly three pounds. The speed and velocity at which these falcons attack their prey typically kills on impact. But that’s no surprise when you’re flying faster than a Ferrari. This miraculous creature has inspired many, including our great state of Idaho, as it became the official “state raptor” in 2004. Established in 1970 as a way to educate the public about and protect the endangered (at the time) Peregrine Falcon, the Peregrine Fund (also known as the Worlds Center for Birds of Prey) took flight far beyond falcons into all birds of prey and wildlife conservation as whole. Officially removed from the endangered species list in 1999, the Peregrine Falcon is a conservation success story that inspires many naturalists to take note. Fascinating creatures, birds of prey hold an air of mystery about them. From razor sharp claws to their keen eyes, birds of prey encompass many things, from the famous Bald Eagle to the American Kestrel, Idaho’s smallest raptor. “Birds of Prey are like the fabled canary in a coal mine,” shared Tate Mason, Director of the World Center for Birds of Prey. “They are excellent indicators of environmental health. The Peregrine Fund works to save birds of

prey worldwide, thereby creating healthier landscapes for both raptors and people. We base our decisions in science, and work diligently to bring stakeholders together to find solutions that work for everyone.” Tate has been involved with the Fund for nearly a decade and is passionate about wildlife conservation and environmental education. “As a biologist, I have had the opportunity to see some amazing birds up close and personal,” Tate said, enthusiastically. “At the World Center for Birds of Prey we are able to make those experiences accessible to anyone, which enables people to make deeper connections with nature. Getting kids fired up about birds is one of the favorite parts of my job!” The organization is funded primarily by Peregrine Fund members and foundations. They also receive a limited amount of federal funding from the Endangered Species Recovery Projects program. Operated by a small staff and a dedicated group of volunteers, the Peregrine Fund offers activities for visitors of all ages. They provide home school tours, group events, educational tours, day camps, and a fantastic program known as Fall Flights. ‘Every weekend from mid-September through the end of October/ early November, see our education birds fly outdoors, where they swoop and soar over the heads of delighted audiences to show off their amazing aerial skills.’

This year’s Fall Flights events wrap up on November 5, but they’ll be back in 2024 for more impressive displays of prowess, intelligence, and skill. “We create encounters with raptors that anyone can experience,” Tate explained. “For example, just today we flew a trained Peregrine Falcon, which then barrel-rolled in the wind and stooped down to our trainer at an incredible speed. The flight was amazing to see, maybe surpassing the beauty of any flight I’ve encountered in the wild. To be able to share these experiences with people is really magical.”

To make it a better place for everyone— where no one goes hungry and diseases are eradicated. A world that prospers and is guaranteed to be beautiful and bountiful for the generations to come. For many of us, this spark was lit as a child. We saw a movie, read a book or a poem, maybe we met someone who showed us that one person can truly make a difference. That even small acts can make a big impact in the long run. As children, we see the world a little differently than adults. For one thing, there is a whole lot more time for everything. We don’t usually see the adversities, the pushback, the struggle. Inside us, a dream was ignited and many of those dreams turned into nonprofits. River Discovery The focus of River Discovery is on joy and trying things outside of your comfort zone. “Our longer river trips operate on a lottery system, where we get about 100 applicants a year and can only take around 20, give or take. So, what I like to tell people is that you are here for a reason, your name was chosen to do this for a reason,” Betsy Carver shared passionately. Betsy is the Executive Director of River Discovery, an Idaho nonprofit organization ‘focused on sending cancer survivors, of all ages, on outdoor adventures that promote healing and strengthening of the mind, body and spirit.’ There is no shortage of benefits that the outdoors provides. Strength, connection, healing. The list seems as boundless as the river seems endless. Betsy sees many beautiful experiences as the director of such a valuable nonprofit. “The nature of our organization can be challenging because of who we serve. But these stories are always inspiring. We had one woman who went on a six-day trip. She had cancer when she was much younger. One night around the fire she said, ‘I don’t feel like I deserve to be on this trip because my cancer was so long ago.’ But like I tell everyone, ‘Your name was drawn for a reason.’ A month later she had a recurrence, but this time she had a community of people to help and support her. First Tee of Idaho “Golf is such a unique sport. For one thing, you are your own referee. It’s your responsibility to call penalties on yourself and play the game with integrity. It can also be one of the most frustrating sports! The difference between golf and many other sports is you have a lot more time to think about the mistake you just made; you have to have the ability to let things go and put mistakes behind you and move forward,” explained Katie McKelvey, Program Director at First Tee of Idaho. Katie has been involved in First Tee since 2016 and gets to witness first-hand the power of the sport. “Stories range from seeing the excitement in participants when they hit their first amazing shot, to our longtime participants being selected for First Tee National Opportunities!”

The mission of this nonprofit is to ‘build game changers by empowering kids and teens through golf.’ First Tee provides focus, goals, and mentorship to kids and teens across the country. This year, we had just under 1,000 participants, nearly triple what we had in 2019. Wild Hearts Idaho “Since our first trip in 2016, we’ve taken over 300 girls on a wide array of adventures,” said Serena Rasmussen, Executive Director of Wild Hearts Idaho. “Last year alone, we were able to take 38 participants on 12 adventures, ranging from day hikes to local hot springs to multiday river trips. Forty-five percent of these girls had never experienced Idaho’s great outdoors in that way, and every single participant had the opportunity to meet new friends, learn important wilderness skills, and take away new growth for their own development as leaders.” Wild Hearts Idaho is a girl-focused, girl-led nonprofit that strives to build leadership skills in teen girls through the magic of outdoor adventure. In our cooking classes and camps, kids are using real knives, a hot stove, learning how to make bread and sauces, sautéing, stir-frying, making pasta. There’s no waiting around for someone else to do it! We run a Junior Beekeeping camp and they are inspecting hives, harvesting honey, and making candles. Our volunteers are in the soil, using tools, harvesting produce. We’re forging strong connections with food.
