As the hottest month of the year, August epitomizes summer. Days spent boating, swimming, camping or hiking; beautiful soft evenings; festivals, markets and concerts; picnics and cook-outs. Usually by late summer, the kids joyous peals of freedom have faded into August’s languid sighs of boredom. Summer camp is mostly over, family vacations are coming to a close, and parents are shopping for pencils, pens and backpacks. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue, we are highlighting kids who are making a difference in our community. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love.

1-4: Brundage Mountain’s Summer Season opened June 17, but the Opening Weekend activities looked a lot different this year. Diehard skiers and snowboarders showed up to shred some rails in their best Joe “Snow” Dirt costume including mustaches, mullets, and jean shorts. “Spring storms have left us with a solid snowpack on the top of the mountain,” says General Manager, Ken Rider. “While we’re working to clear and prep mountain biking and hiking trails from the base area up, we’ll be prepping four or five terrain park features near the summit.” Bikers and hikers can check the Summer Trail Report at Brundage.com. Rising Stars TREASURE VALLEY CHILDREN’S THEATER OFFERS GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH

The lights go up and a child steps to center stage to deliver their first line. The moment is a product of weeks of rehearsal, coaching, and behind-the-scenes work from kids and adults. This is Treasure Valley Children’s Theater (TVCT). Led by founder and executive director Autumn Kersey, the company has performed across the Treasure Valley for a decade. “We believe really strongly that the arts, and theater arts in particular, prepare people to be great citizens,” Kersey says. Guided by the values of courage, commitment, respect, enthusiasm, and excellence, TVCT has been helping kids ages 6-17 to explore their best selves. “You don’t need to be the best singer. You don’t need to be the best actor,” says Kersey. “You just need to be yourself. And if you don’t know who that self is yet, we’re going to give you lots of

“Our theater space creates an opportunity for young people to try on different roles: whether that’s on stage telling a story, backstage supporting others in the telling of that story, or in bringing the community together to enjoy a positive story with a strong message.”
opportunity to figure out who you are and what you bring to the community.” The kids are aided in this process by TVCT’s professional adult acting company. “That company does a lot of touring to elementary schools and libraries and community spaces with stories,” Kersey says. “It was so important to our core mission to have adult performers who performed for young audiences. We know that not every kid wants to be on stage, but we believe every kid needs to see live theater and the impact that watching live theater can have on a community.” Aside from working with school districts to provide drama club programs, and their own theater camps, TVCT brings free shows to all ages. “In 2021, we procured a mobile stage,” Kersey says. “It’s a 30-foot trailer that transforms into a performance space. We take that around the Valley and do free performances with young actors.” Recently, that included performances of David Shannon’s A Bad Case of Stripes.

“We were the first company to produce that story in its full staged version,” Kersey explains. “We leaned into the story about Camilla Cream and her struggle to be brave and honest about who she is in front of a peer group. We look at these stories in a way that says, ‘How does this reinforce the values that we embrace and teach, and are they values we want to see reflected in our community?’” While Stripes has wrapped, you can catch Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr.! at 7 p.m. Aug. 12 and 11 a.m. Aug. 13 in Reid Merrill Park in Eagle. “Schoolhouse Rock is the very first musical we produced 10 years ago, so we’re going back to the beginning,” Kersey shares. “I’m amazed that over all that time we’ve never strayed from our mission. We hiked the dog-friendly trails at Cape Disappointment State Park, walked along the shore as often as possible, and followed Joey’s good sense to indulge in daytime naps.
When I asked my husband what he wanted for his birthday, he replied, “I want to see the ocean.” Our dog Joey wagged his tail in agreement, so with Boise in our rearview mirror, we all drove west on I-84 toward the cool coasts of Oregon and Washington. Day one: Pendleton, Oregon may be known for its iconic rodeo, wool blankets, and whisky, but this western town halfway between Boise and Portland has plenty of cred beyond its pioneer beginnings. MotoLodge, a fully renovated mid-century motor lodge has modern rooms and a pet-washing station. Their expert staff recommended the dogfriendly Oregon Grain Growers Distillery for dinner. This farmer-owned distillery offers 13 varieties of house made spirits, and wows with remarkable food. While shopping in the Historic District, we discovered New York Clothier, a haberdashery specializing in hand-crafted shirts that are both traditional and updated for the modern man. Later we indulged in whisky bonbons from Alexander’s Artisan Chocolates. (Note to self: Come back to Pendleton when we can stay longer.) Day two: Astoria, Oregon holds plenty of activity for two and four-legged adventurers. After strolling through downtown, Joey slept in front of the fireplace while we enjoyed the spectacular views from our comfy bed at the Cannery Pier Hotel & Spa. Everything was included to make Joey’s stay wonderful—a luxurious Pendleton bed, delicious treats, and a stylish bandana to show off his good looks. Days three through five: Just 30 minutes north of Astoria sits Long Beach, Washington and the Inn at Discovery Coast, a sanctuary by the sea designed
for rejuvenation. The cozy and beautiful room included a sumptuous bathtub and the sound of crashing waves. A short trail led us to the 28-mile-long sandy beach where Joey ran with gleeful abandon, and his joy was contagious. We hiked the dog-friendly trails at Cape Disappointment State Park; explored the Historic District of Oysterville; walked along the shore as often as possible; and followed Joey’s good sense to indulge in daytime naps. Next door, the Pickled Fish Restaurant has views, an inspired menu and a daily Cocktail for a Cause benefitting a local organization. After only a couple of days, we felt like locals ourselves. Days five through seven: Ninety minutes north of Long Beach sits the historic Tokeland Hotel, the oldest hotel in the state of Washington. Owner Heather L. Earnhardt, Seattle chef and author of Big Food, Big Love, has created a haven for travelers with warmth, fine dining, and restful lodging augmented by diverse art and entertainment. The hotel’s restaurant, The Wandering Goose, offers food grown from the farm on the premises. The entire property feels like a porthole to a magical time and place; one connected to history, Southern hospitality, and even the ghosts who wander the halls. There is plenty to do in Tokeland, including biking, hiking, fishing, crabbing, surfing, kayaking, beach combing, swimming, bird watching, and kiting, but it’s hard to beat playing board games, reading, eating, drinking, and soaking up the vibe of this one-of-a-kind hotel. The journey home finally got underway when I suggested that we stay in Pendleton on the way back to buy a handmade shirt. Once again, Joey wagged in agreement.

Include water, bowls, leash and harness, bed, carrier, a veterinary first aid kit, doggy bags, unscented shampoo, towel, and favorite treats and toys. Be sure tags are current with easy-to-read names and phone numbers, and vaccinations. 2. Frequent breaks help drivers stay alert and gives everyone a chance to stretch their legs. GIRL SCOUTS The beginning of a new school year also marks the opportunity for girls to join Girl Scouts. If your daughter is already a Girl Scout, she’s probably eagerly anticipating the start of a new year with old and new friends and adventures. Girl Scouts is the largest entrepreneur organization for girls. GSUSA and the local Girl Scouts of Silver Sage Council is open to girls from kindergarten through high school. They begin as Daisies, and eventually become Ambassadors. Along the way, girls enjoy countless experiences in which they can acquire proficiency badges, pins, and at the highest level, gold, silver, and bronze awards. Even more valuable though, is the knowledge, skills, and character development these opportunities bring to girls. Field trips are a big part of Girl Scout activities. Trips can range from visiting museums, touring a manufacturing plant, or going on a hiking adventure. In high school Girl Scouts might take trips to another state or travel abroad.
Meridian Lifestyle reached out to the regional Girl Scouts of Silver Sage Council, who provided the following highlights for us: • Our council serves 35 counties and was top 10 council growth nationwide this year. • We have two resident camps (CAP and TAM) and one day camp (ECHO). Most councils do not offer a day camp option, but we have one located just outside of downtown Boise. • We have a Girl Scout store located in our council office carrying clothing, outdoor gear, patches, and more. • This year we had 3 gold, 51 silver, and 64 bronze awards earned by our council, and over 1,000 girls participated in council STEM events.
STEM GSUSA recognizes the importance of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to girls’ futures. Therefore, GSUSA has initiatives, partnerships, and sponsorships with several organizations, such as the

Through these opportunities girls are able to experience STEM and plan for their futures in STEM industries. Girl Scouts can also earn a variety of badges through STEM activities. These badges include innovation, digital art, financial literacy, science and technology, and naturalist. • iCode/Code Ninjas are the two community partners we work with for coding nights. • We partner with Idaho Women in Technology to put on FEMSTEM, an women run STEM community event. • We partnered with Teton Science School to provide girls with a STEM centered spring break trip.
ENVIRONMENT Developing an appreciation and respect for our environment is another crucial part of being a Girl Scout. Through several programs and activities, girls can learn about nature and environmental issues. Girl Scout camping has also been

FAITH GSUSA is a secular organization, meaning girls of all faiths, as well as those of no faith are welcome. In recognizing the importance of faith and spirituality to many girls and their families, Girl Scouts are encouraged to take spiritual journeys through their own religious path. Through their journey, they can earn the My Promise, My Faith pin.
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT Because GSUSA aims to help girls develop leadership skills, the organization encourages civic duty. Girl Scouts hold a wide variety of beliefs and values and are encouraged
to think for themselves and form their own opinions and ideologies. GSUSA has created a nonpartisan initiative called G.I.R.L. Agenda through which girls are inspired, prepared, and mobilized to create positive change. • Our “Cookies from the Heart” is a big community engagement. While selling cookies, girls ask their customers if they’d like to donate a box of cookies to the Idaho Foodbank. The customer pays for the cookies, then we arrange for them to go to the Idaho Foodbank at their location here in the Boise area and also in Pocatello. 16,051 boxes were donated this year. We also work with Dairy West on this program. They donate milk to the food bank for every box of cookies donated. • We are partnering with the Boise Hawks for a fundraising event on August 5th. • We partner with EverWild Forest School to put on community events for families. • We work with Vertical View on our climbing nights. • The Discovery Center is a year-round partner for Camp ECHO and council events.

Bringing home a pet is a big responsibility. Lots of planning and consideration need to go into such a big decision. Millions of animals are surrendered to shelters every year and only a fraction of them are adopted. More and more, shelters are working to open their doors to animals, and to create a comfortable environment for them to live in until they are adopted. In the Treasure Valley, there are many adoption agencies and rescues that are searching for forever homes for dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, reptiles, birds, hamsters and more. For example, Simply Cats in Boise is a no-kill, no-cage organization that takes in cats of all backgrounds. Interested parties can take a “Meet Your Match” test to see which cat they would best match with. The organization saw a major increase in cats being surrendered when the housing market skyrocketed. “People are forced to move into affordable housing, and most of the

time there’s a no pet policy,” says Maddie Corey, the outreach and fundraising coordinator for Simply Cats. “Cats adopted from us 10 years ago, 5 years ago, 2 years ago are being returned so the family can move.” Simply Cats saves cats from euthanasia by creating successful adoptions, and is completely funded by donations. In 2021, 1047 cats were taken in, and in 2022, 403 were adopted. While the cats are well taken care of at the facility, they are still waiting for the day that they can go to their forever home. Another rescue in the Treasure Valley is Save a Bun Rabbit Rescue. This nonprofit organization takes in stray rabbits through surrenders or adoptions in order to keep them from being abandoned. People don’t realize that releasing a domesticated rabbit outside sentences them to a life of struggle, and ultimately, a quick death. The founder of Save A Bun, Jenean Hammer-Huber, says, “I probably get 15 to 20 phone calls a day about surrendering bunnies. People buy [rabbits] because they think they’ll be good starter pets, but then 8 months later, they realize that they need more work and care than expected.” Save A Bun offers free education for rabbit owners and the option for an adoption coordinator to come out to their homes and help prepare for the new family member. Once a family has an idea of how to care for a rabbit, they can be one of the best animals to own. Jenean says, “Education is extremely important for this type of animal. I do feel that if more people were educated prior to purchase, we would have less dumping and surrendering.” There are too many animals in constant states of anxiety, wondering when or if they’ll be welcomed into a home with a family who will love them for the rest of their lives. Thankfully, adoption centers and rescues here in the Treasure Valley make it easy to adopt. With virtual interviews, questionnaires, match tests, and more, adopting an animal has never been more accessible. No animal deserves to wonder why or if their family is coming back for them, so lots of time, planning, and consideration needs to go into the adoption process. Taking the Stage IDAHO’S FIRST AND ONLY HIGH SCHOOL THEATER AWARDS COULD SEND KIDS TO BROADWAY

In every school, big city or small town, there’s always a group of students who find their true selves through theater, and long for the bright lights and an open stage. For them, theater is their sport, and they should be rewarded on the same level as their athletic acquaintances. With the ideas and determination of Luke Lords and the Morrison Center team, Idaho saw the premiere of the very first Idaho High School Theater Awards. Also known as the Jimmy Awards, this program nominates theater students for their performances, both individually and as a group, in a high school production. Seven schools in the Treasure Valley were nominated for awards this year, ranging from Best Lead and Supporting Actors to Best Production, and even Best Theater Director. During the Jimmy Awards

ceremony at the Morrison Center, each school got to perform a piece from their nominated production. This included numbers from Into the Woods, Brigadoon, Little Women, Mamma Mia, The Little Mermaid, and Cinderella. The reaction from the audience was nothing less than awestruck. Over the course of four days, the students rehearsed and prepared for the biggest night in their high school theater lives on the Morrison Center stage. As a special treat for their hard work, they got to meet and workshop with one of Boise’s beloved musicians, Leta Harris Neustaedter. They also had the opportunity to learn a few choreographed dance routines by Broadway performer Ray Mercer and New York Ballet member Shay Bland, which were
performed during the ceremony. They took songs from Newsies, Dear Evan Hansen, and Hairspray, soaking in the adrenaline and hysteria from the crowd and each other. At the end of the night, eight students from various schools were nominated to compete at the national Jimmy Awards in New York City. With great honor, Elisabeth Clark from Rocky Mountain High School and Yale Langworthy from Richard McKenna Charter School were chosen to represent Idaho. The hope for the Idaho Jimmy Awards is to reach more drama departments throughout Idaho, and give those around the state an opportunity like these kids received. The stress started to melt away as soon as we rounded the corner onto Highway 20. The motion of the cities and freeway behind us quickly faded into the distance as we crept closer toward the mountains. The sun hung low in the late-afternoon sky. Fluffy white clouds moved lazily in the distance. Our destination: The Knob Hill Inn, where we would begin our journey touring around part of the Wood River Valley—Ketchum and Sun Valley. Living under the grandeur of the Sawtooths and Bald Mountain, this area is home to beauty, adventure, and really, really great food. We arrived at the Knob Hill Inn just under three hours after leaving Boise and were immediately greeted by a handful of smiling faces. After a quick check-in, we ran up to our room and gawked at the skyline view from our third-floor balcony. Flowers bloomed from all directions, coating the air in floral sweetness. Downstairs we sat on the outdoor dining patio, which can comfortably seat 100 people on their busiest days. Lucky for us, it was a quiet Friday evening. Bob Dunn, who owns the adjoining hotel restaurant, the Grill at Knob, spoke happily about his time in the dining industry, “We serve customers from all over the world. So many great people come back year after year. It’s really a great experience.” Bob prides himself in sourcing only the finest ingredients for the Grill at Knob’s menu. “I’d rather pay more up front to continually provide our customers with that ‘wow’ experience every time,” he explained. And ‘wow’ experience indeed. The ribeye, slathered in fresh-harvested morel sauce, melted in our mouths and paired perfectly with the roasted asparagus and fingerling potatoes. It was immediately apparent that there was passion behind every meal served here. CONTINUED >

The next morning, we were surprised to find endless mimosas and made-to-order eggs offered at the Knob’s complementary breakfast. We sipped coffee and snacked on fresh fruit parfaits, drizzled with honey and chia seeds. After a hearty breakfast, we spent the rest of the brisk morning switching between the hot tub and the hot-rock sauna. Our weekend getaway was off to a perfect start. After our relaxing soak, we were greeted by hotel general manager, Ally Barnhardt who gave us a tour of the facility. Originally built in 1992, the architecture was inspired by the Alps and has an inviting, Swiss feel to it with dark wood and warm lighting. Ally repeatedly placed her hand to her heart as she spoke about their incredible staff and her time working at the Inn. “We’re all about finding the human aspect of the experience—both for our guests and our staff members. Every day we share a family meal (for over 60 employees) and we’ve created more staff housing to help fight the rising costs of living,” Ally shared, her eyes welling with love. We decided it was time to explore more of the Wood River Valley and set out on for a gentle hike near the hotel, where wildflowers abundantly lined the hillside. Ally gave us a list of nearby trails, sorted by difficulty levels. While we were tempted by the promising views boasted by the Proctor Mountain Trail and the Fox Creek Loop, our hunger took precedence and we set off back toward town. Throughout the weekend, we dined at more than five restaurants—including Enoteca, an upscale wine bar with mouth-watering entrees and an impressive wine list, and Barrio75, a delicious taco lounge and tequila bar. But of course, on our way out of down, we stopped at Grumpy’s for their famed burger and coleslaw, which did not disappoint.

As the Inn was only a short walk from the town’s bustling night life, we decided to stop by a few more places for drinks, a favorite being Sun Valley’s TNT Taproom. Located in a historic dynamite shed, the craft beer/wine bar had an impressive selection and friendly service, where we chatted about the Wood River Valley’s growing music scene. Venues like the Duchin (inside the Sun Valley Lodge), the Ram, and the Limelight Lounge have events nearly all year round. While we didn’t have time to try as many spots as we would have liked, several others came highly recommended including The Kneadery, Rominna’s, the Pioneer Saloon, and the Cellar Pub. It’s safe to say there is a delicious dining experience around every corner, catering to all kinds of cravings. After a night of dancing at Whiskey Jacques and another delicious complimentary breakfast, we wanted to check out Sturtevants of Sun Valley, a fantastic local spot for bike rentals. With discounts for Knob Hill guests, Sturtevants has everything you need to bike, hike, and explore Sun Valley. A ride is one of the best ways to experience all the natural beauty that the Wood River Valley offers. Other excursions we did not get to try included the Sun Valley Wellness Festival, guided horse tours, kayak tours, and all the many more miles of stunning trails that criss-cross through and around the entire Valley. There were so many activities to try and fit into one weekend, we look forward to returning soon to continue our adventures. We said goodbye to our hospitable hosts and stuffed our luggage in the car, smiling from ear-to-ear at one another. After our perfect weekend getaway, we drove home with a renewed sense of vigor and motivation, ready, once again, to tackle Monday and our to-do lists.
