How Do You Do Summer? Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers are often not filled with constant activities and trips, but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those friends and family. It is refreshing to take time to slow down and to enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice-cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. In this issue and on CityLifestyle.com, we share some of the happenings in the Treasure Valley, as well as travel destinations around the country. In addition, it is our privilege to shine a light on local veterans, including those men and women still serving, and to thank them for their service in honor of the Fourth of July. Bank of Idaho confirms further expansion in the Treasure Valley region by announcing a fourth location at the corner of Fairview Avenue and 5 Mile Road, conveniently situated for businesses and residents near the city of Meridian, Idaho. The branch opened for business on May 16 and highlights a team of some familiar faces from the area: Rocio Rivera, Retail Branch Manager; Keith Demaline V.P. Commercial Loan Manager; and Carole Howell, Commercial Lender. “We are excited to grow our roots deeper in the Treasure Valley,” Bank President and CEO Jeff Newgard says. For 37 years, Bank of Idaho has been a financial fixture in the eastern Idaho community, since the original location opened in downtown Idaho Falls.
SOLDIER MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK OPEN FOR THE SEASON The mountain bike park at Soldier Mountain is open for the season. From noon to 6 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays, and major holidays through the end of September, riders can pedal under their own power as the lifts will not be operating this summer except for a few special events. Soldier Mountain added a 1.5-mile hand-cut intermediate trail last fall, bringing its network of trails to five and spanning a total of 9 miles. One of those trails will be designated as an uphill trail that riders ascend to access the other trails, which include easy, intermediate, and advanced handcut trails and an extreme machine-cut jump trail. Soldier Mountain also boasts a skills park. The resort will host National Interscholastic Cycling Association Youth Bike Races in September and other bike races throughout the summer. The Ambrose School "North Campus" is slated to open this fall for the 2022-23 school year. "We are very excited to add to our community and provide the classical Christian education that families are seeking," says Wade Ortego, Head of School. Due to the Ambrose School’s significant increase in applications, more space was needed. "That's when Foothills Church on State Street stepped up and offered their building as a potential campus for pre-kindergarten through 6th grades. That was the blessing we were hoping for in order to accommodate the overflow of families wanting in,” says Ortega. Four years ago, Ambrose also began a collaborative model school housed at Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Garden City. The Ambrose "Bridge Campus" provides two days of in-class instruction and lesson plans for three days of parent-led instruction at home. Idaho is well known for outdoor recreation and miles of wilderness. There are many locales to choose from, but the humble city of Stanley, home to just 69 people, is at the top of the list when it comes to authentic Idaho experiences. Stanley is the perfect gateway to top-notch exploration and breathtaking scenery. Centrally located amongst the Sawtooth, White Cloud, and Lost River Mountain Ranges, Stanley may be the most convenient destination for rural adventure-seekers.
If you are a resident of Idaho and have an interest in outdoor recreation, you've likely heard of Stanley, but this small town is so much more than a hike in the woods. “There are so many benefits to being outside and being active. It builds memories. It’s important for family bonding. It promotes friendship and interactions. It’s a great avenue for physical fitness and mental health. We try to offer something for everyone at different skill levels so that everyone has something they can enjoy and participate in.” – Steve Siddoway, Meridian Parks and Recreation Director Do you have a checklist for a perfect summer? Maybe it includes a day at the pool, some park time, a couple of movies, live music, and fireworks. If it does, you’re in luck. You can check off every item, and add a few extras, without even leaving town. “We hope to offer a lot of fun, not only with events, but also sports and classes that give people options of things to do so they can unplug and be active yearround,” says Meridian Parks and Recreation Director Steve Siddoway. Fan favorites like Meridian Dairy Days and Gene Kleiner Day took place in June, but there is still plenty on the calendar. “On the Fourth of July, we invite families to gather in Storey Park,” Siddoway says. “We have fireworks, and we also have music in the park. Food trucks arrive at 4 p.m. Live music with the Billy Blues Band starts at 7 p.m. and fireworks begin around 10:15 p.m.” If a day splashing in the water is more your speed, the Meridian Community Pool is open for fun (213 E. Franklin Road). “This is our first year operating the pool,” says Siddoway. It was previously managed by the West Ada Recreation District. “We offer swimming lessons for a variety of skill levels, just like we always have. Public open swim times will be on weekdays from 1:30-4:30 p.m.” Could your picnics use some local produce and wares? Every Saturday, you can find the Meridian Main Street Market at the Meridian City Hall Plaza from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Siddoway explained, “there are vendors selling fruits and vegetables, specialty food items,
crafts, and gifts. There has been a lot of live entertainment recently as well. Food trucks are also available. It’s a fun, festive atmosphere for families to come down and enjoy.” Speaking of family entertainment, Sparklight Movie Night has returned for another year. “Every Friday night at dusk in Settlers Park, there will be a family-friendly movie playing on a giant inflatable movie screen,” Siddoway says. “Bring a blanket or a lawn chair. Bring snacks, or we have concessions available in the park. I’ve always loved Sparklight Movie Nights. That’s one of our bigger events every year. People love it. It’s one that I’ve enjoyed taking my own family to.” July’s offerings include The Addams Family (July 1), The Secret Life of Pets 2 (July 8), Scoob! (July 15), Cars (July 22) and Space Jam: A New Legacy (July 29). For those looking for a bit of culture (and an escape from the heat), head to the Initial Point Gallery inside City Hall. “Every month, we debut a collection from local, regional, or national artists,” says Parks and Recreation Department Marketing Coordinator Shelly Houston. “It’s free to come inside and admire the art any time during our business hours.” Upon each exhibit's opening on the first Friday of every month, there is a free reception from 4:30-7 p.m. where you can meet the artists and talk about their work. Lots of different activities there,” Steve Siddoway says. “We also have a handful of excursions targeting seniors who are looking for a chance to get out. Registration is done online through our website.” Siddoway added, “Sports league and tournaments are the other popular activities that the Meridian Parks and Recreation offers. We have a variety of sports. We also offer softball, volleyball, basketball, and flag football. Recently we added pickleball, as a social sport league, and cornhole. We have sports year-round.” And if grooving to some tunes sounds like the perfect summer wrap-up, Meridian has you covered there too. “We host a popular Concerts on Broadway series,” Siddoway says. “It’s presented by the Meridian Arts Commission. It’s free. The performance takes place in front of City Hall, in the little outdoor amphitheater. On August 27, we have Smooth Avenue. High Street, a perennial favorite, is on September 10, and then we have Soul Patch on September 24. We encourage people to bring their own folding chairs or lawn blankets and come out and enjoy the concert series.” So, add a few more items to your summer checklist, then get out there and enjoy.

Double Sizing the Fun THE FIRST OF SEVEN PLANNED ROARING SPRINGS PHASES TO OPEN IN THE SUMMER OF 2023 Construction is underway on an expansion that will bring some exciting new water rides to Meridian. The Roaring Springs waterpark will expand onto the 12-acre lot east of Roaring Springs, increasing the park size by 40% over the next decade. The Northwest-themed addition will include an interactive play structure with seven slides, an action river, an activity pool, a new restaurant, the waterpark’s first bar, additional parking, and other amenities. “This expansion will make Roaring Springs one of the largest waterparks in the U.S.,” said Roaring Springs CEO Pat Morandi.
Camp IdaH2O is a giant interactive water playground featuring seven slides, and some of Idaho’s most iconic symbols. The most unique feature is the world’s first dumping potato bucket, which splashes 650 gallons of water onto fun-seekers below. Whitewater adventure meets waterpark fun in Class 5 Canyon, Idaho’s first action river. Class 5 Canyon will be half as long and twice as wide as Roaring Springs’ current Endless River, with a zero-depth entry beach.
Critter Crossing is an activity pool with forest-themed floating features for kids to balance across with overhead ropes, water basketball and other play elements for skill-based recreational fun. The Geyser Grill & Bar will offer Idaho fare with an Asian flair, including burgers and fries, pizza, rice bowls and fried potstickers. Grown-ups can enjoy adult beverages for the first time at Roaring Springs. “I am excited to see the continued investment that will nearly double the summer fun at Roaring Springs. They are a great community partner who has been committed to providing safe entertainment for our families, but also job opportunities for our youth,” said Mayor Robert Simison.

Idaho is no stranger to wildfires, and unfortunately the state is becoming more familiar as the years go by. Fire activity now starts earlier in the spring and lasts longer into the fall, putting a massive strain on resources and wreaking havoc on the land. Fortunately, there are hundreds of brilliant minds and a group of agencies and land managers working together to solve this problem. One such agency is the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). “The BLM is a leader in the nation’s management of wildland fire and carries out a broad range of actions to protect the public, natural landscapes, wildlife habitat, recreational areas, and other values and resources,” shares Samantha Storms, Deputy Chief of External Affairs for BLM Fire and the National Interagency Fire Center. The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, located primarily in 12 western states and Alaska. Their mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. "As the largest and most complex fire program within the Department of the Interior, the BLM has some of the very best personnel when it comes to wildland fire," says Grant Beebe, BLM Fire Director.
Alongside the BLM, several other agencies including the Forest Service, the National Weather Service, and the Department of Defense have come together to create the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), which now serves as a hub for the nation’s fire defense strategy and resource management. Just adjacent to the Boise Airport lies 55 acres of equipment, aircraft tanker operations, and more—all dedicated to the problem of fighting wildland fires, and other natural disasters. NIFC was established in 1965 in an effort to prevent the duplication of work and resources of various land managers. Agencies like the Forest Service and the National Park Service quickly began to realize that wildland fire management was a problem they shared. NIFC was

While we may take solace and a sense of pride knowing that the nation’s firefighting hub is located in our very own capital city, it is still important that we each do our part to protect our state’s beautiful natural resources. On average, more than 85% of wildfires are human-caused. Which means that more than 85% of wildfires are preventable.

created as a platform to cut costs, communicate ideas, and bring together resources to fight a mutual enemy: wildland fires and other natural disasters. “At NIFC, we support many different kinds of emergency responses, including floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, riots, terrorist attacks (9/11 and Oklahoma City bombing), and radios to Haiti,” says Storms. “However, our primary focus is on wildland firefighting. The agencies that are represented here share firefighting supplies, equipment, and personnel, which helps ensure efficient and cost-effective incident management.” Storms continues, “The partner agencies at NIFC do remarkable work. It’s far more than a collection of federal buildings. It is the epitome of interagency cooperation and collaboration. It’s the energy of nearly 600 employees, representing eight separate federal and state agencies, engaged in multiple aspects of the same mission: to develop national wildland fire policy and lead in its implementation; and to serve as the logistical and support center for the nation’s wildland fires and, at times, other national disasters and emergencies.” As demand for more wildland firefighters continues to surge, NIFC and its partners are placing a greater emphasis on employee wellbeing. Agencies are shifting to fulltime positions for firefighters, rather than seasonal jobs, in hopes to retain employment. They are also focusing on increased pay and upward mobility, as well as offering an abundance of mental health resources.
"After 17 years working as a BLM firefighter, I can honestly say that I have met and worked with some of the most incredible people. BLM Fire has taken me all across the country and even as far as Australia," says Brian Holmes, Idaho native and Engine Captain for the BLM Idaho Boise District. "It's no secret that wildfires are on everyone's mind this time of year.” In anticipation of the 2022 fire year, the BLM and other land managers have been taking proactive measures to hopefully alleviate some of the burden of wildfires. One of their primary initiatives has been to reduce vegetation buildup and to educate communities on how they can best manage their land to prevent fires from spreading. Never use fireworks near dry grasses, and don’t throw cigarette butts out of car windows. “The 2022 fire year won't be without its share of challenges, but we are proud of our wildland firefighting personnel and the way they respond to wildland fires on public lands,” Storms concludes. When most people think of Florida, sprawling theme parks and Miami spice come to mind, but there's much more to do and see in the sunshine state. In the mood for shopping and dining? Head to St. Armand's Circle on St. Armand's Key. Located across Sarasota Bay, the island is connected to the mainland by the John Ringling Causeway. Though the namesake comes from the original owner of the island, John Ringling eventually purchased and developed the property and you can still feel his influence everywhere. The Statue Walk, tropical plants, and patios lead to the focal point, a central park where the Circus Ring of Fame is located. Bronze wagon wheel plaques, which recognize people who made an important contribution to the circus, surround the park. CULTURE John Ringling's love of art inspired him to establish the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in 1927. Upon his death, Florida made the museum the state's official art gallery. In a Cash Balance Plan, each participant has an individual “account balance.” Each year the participant’s account is credited with: • A cash balance allocation: An annual contribution to the account (can be a different amount for different individuals and flexible from year to year). • An interest credit – Interest earned on the account during the year, generally based on a fixed percent.
A participant can receive credits within their account until retirement or until the plan is terminated. After leaving the plan, the participant or plan owner can rollover their entire account balance to their personal IRA.
WHY NOT JUST START A 401(K)? 401(k) plans are a great way to utilize tax-deferred savings. Unfortunately, they also have their limits, primarily, the plan’s maximum annual contribution. For 2022, the maximum individual deduction within a 401(k) plan is just $67,500. In a cash balance plan, you might be able to contribute and deduct approximately 5 TIMES that amount annually. Depending on the individual’s age and income, cash balance plans can offer more than $300,000 per year in benefits. Furthermore, you can pair a cash balance plan with your existing 401(k), allowing you to get the best of both worlds!
WHO IS A GOOD FIT? Cash balance plans are a great fit for all companies looking for large tax savings and significant retirement benefits. They are particularly advantageous for owners of small or owner only companies who don’t wish to pay outsized income taxes on their business profits. Cash balance plans have the flexibility to target individual employees with specific benefits and can be combined with a 401(k) profit sharing plan. They can provide significant benefits to owners and highly compensated employees with minimal business costs.
