girl powerful! SPARKING THE INNER CONFIDENCE OF TWEEN AND TEENAGE GIRLS
ARTICLE BY KRISTEN LARSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GIRL POWERFUL!

According to youth.gov, one in five young people in the U.S. are alone after the school day ends. The hours from 3-6pm are detrimental if a child does not have adult supervision, or better yet, mentorship. This vulnerable time after school, unless in sports, music or supervised by a parent or mentor, can impact self-esteem to a young person. Mentorship promotes positive behaviors such as studying, working out, learning life skills and creating healthy relationships. What if there was a program that not only filled this worrisome time between after school and returning home, but also instilled confidence, emotional health and community for young girls? Fortunately for Idaho, two sisters have dedicated their lives to empower girls of all ages with their mission to spark girls’ inner confidence. Girl Powerful, a youth empowerment 501c3, designed by Sonya and Tedi Serge, teaches girls social and emotional learning (SEL) tools to build a strong sense of self. Girl Powerful has mentored and impacted more than 3,000 girls nationwide. Girl Powerful co-founder Sonya Serge says, “There are so many self-love and self-care tools that I learned later in life that I wish I
knew as a young girl. To bring these lessons to girls, we empower them through our quarterly Virtual Self-Care Summits. We invite influencers, celebrities and wellness experts to guest mentor the girls. We work really hard on slating the volunteer teachers to keep our program fresh and exciting.” Sonya and Tedi began their girl empowerment crusade in 2014, initially working in school districts and community centers in Los Angeles, California before changing locations to Idaho in 2020. Girl Powerful is quickly settling into local work here in the Treasure Valley. “It has been really exciting and welcoming starting to network and provide self-care workshops for girls and women in Idaho. We feel like our community in the Treasure Valley has grown really fast,” says Tedi. “Our program is very on point with the mental health needs of local teens and families. We provide tools and a safe space to be yourself. Most people leave workshops feeling seen, valued and heard. That is always our goal.” Girl Powerful gained media attention after being mentioned in Forbes Magazine as one of the first brands to pivot their platform to meet their program’s needs during the pandemic of 2020. “IT HAS BEEN REALLY EXCITING AND WELCOMING STARTING TO NETWORK AND PROVIDE SELF-CARE WORKSHOPS FOR GIRLS AND WOMEN IN IDAHO. WE FEEL LIKE OUR COMMUNITY IN THE TREASURE VALLEY HAS GROWN REALLY FAST.” — TEDI SERGE

“This media coverage was helpful to springboard us into a national non-profit. We have girls all over the country who log onto our self-care summits. It is important for girls to hear from each other and share what they are going through emotionally, all while learning skin-care, cooking, workouts, self-expression, communication skills, journaling and more.” “During the pandemic, it was important to us that we didn’t let go of the girls we serve,” says Sonya Serge. “Moving online allowed us to positively impact girls all over the country.” Their initial foray into advocacy began when sister Tedi (a former teacher) noticed how much free time at school was used mediating girls at lunch and recess. Girls’ issues always came back to lack of communication, lack of compromise and low self-esteem. Sensing a need to prevent these schoolyard problems, the sisters partnered up together with a direct mission to resolve these ongoing and common issues, especially with younger, more impressionable girls. “We grew up going to after school programs and they kept us out of trouble. Research shows children gain self-esteem when they feel seen by adults outside of the home like mentors, coaches and teachers, and we experienced this firsthand as young girls.”
Building a safe space for young girls is critical for their program’s success. It begins by developing trust. “We always start our class by asking, ‘What’s one good thing that happened today?’ Then work in our Girl Powerful! Journal opens the space to self-reflect and work on our emotional health.” Sonya explains, “The girls write down their feelings, goals, and identify their strengths and abilities. Journal entries include topics such as creating our core values; friendship, respect, risk-taking, making healthy decisions and goal setting.” But Girl Powerful is not just all talk and workbooks. The program is also interactive, encouraging the girls to move their bodies through workout games and dance, which brings a sense of fun, spontaneity and releases feel-good chemicals. Ironically, instead of falling victim to the woes of the pandemic, it was their courageous rise from the adversity of COVID-19 that provided an unexpected silver lining for Girl Powerful: a strong online presence.
Shifting gears into a fully-immersed online experience also brought about the creation of The Girl Powerful Podcast which hosts guests ranging from members of Bachelor Nation, Bravolebrities, pro-athletes, wellness gurus, and female founders. Season Two will be released in spring 2022. “The Girl Powerful Podcast helped us grow our students and visibility online so we can attract mentors that have a big online presence. Awareness is key when you are a non-profit and count on heavy hitter guest teachers and donors,” says Tedi. Interested in learning more? Check out Girl Powerful on Instagram and Facebook @GirlPowerfulProject. Girl Powerful journals and affirmation card decks are available to purchase online and are a great resource for mentors, educators, social workers and parents. www.girlpowerful.org

It takes a lot to open a new restaurant— finding the perfect location, picking out the right menu items, purchasing supplies, décor…the list goes on. But for Chef Julie and her husband, Travis Berger, this entire process happened in about a week. “We had no intention of opening this year, but an opportunity presented itself that we couldn’t resist. Ed Bird (of Ed’s 50’s Café) decided to sell his Meridian location to us,” shared Julie. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a restaurant open as quickly as ours did!” A Michelin trained chef, Julie studied in France for more than seven years and brings her renowned expertise to the Tipsy Chef Café tables in a classic café style. Combined with her husband’s front of house knowledge and passion for beer and wine, the pair decided to take a step toward making their dreams come true. “We pride ourselves in making all of our dishes in-house fresh daily. We use local purveyors whenever we can, and ultimately it would be our goal to be as close to 100% locally sourced as possible,” Julie explained. “We truly value the amount

of satisfaction and memorable moments food can create, and that’s why we are so passionate about bringing good food and good times to the Treasure Valley, starting with Meridian.” Their mouth-watering menu—featuring timeless favorites like house-made Corned Beef Hash and Cinnamon Roll French Toast—has something for everyone. The namesake, Tipsy Chef, was inspired by Julie’s time spent working at a wine bar. The owner preferred that his employees work with an open glass of wine nearby, a tactic that worked wonders for both employee morale and customer engagement. Newlyweds and new business owners, Travis and Julie are grateful to be in the Treasure Valley and look forward to what comes next. “We would like to give thanks for the outpouring of support from the residents of Treasure Valley. We hope that in some small way, we can enhance the lives of our neighbors through dining and fellowship.” Located at 979 South Progress Avenue in Meridian, Tipsy Chef Café is open Tuesday through Sunday from 6AM-2PM. “I was the youngest girl with three older brothers in a military family, so I grew up with my dad telling me that I could do anything the boys could do,” explains Lori Otter, a former school teacher and administrator who served as Idaho’s First Lady of the Gem State from 2007 to 2019. “And there is a generation of women out there who share this mind set and are capable leaders in their fields.” Lori Otter, CEO of Idaho Women in Leadership, is the 62nd Idaho Business Leader of the Year. Alpha Kappa Psi (Delta Upsilon chapter), the professional business fraternity at Idaho State University, recognized Otter at their annual award dinner in Pocatello in March. The award recognizes an Idaho business leader who has demonstrated outstanding business and professional ethics while contributing significant support to worthwhile community, civic and education activities. Otter’s commitment to Idaho has been legendary. After graduating from Idaho schools, she won the Miss Idaho USA title in 1991 and represented Idaho in the Miss USA pageant. She taught K-12 students and coached sports in the Meridian public school district, then dedicated herself to public service when her husband, Butch Otter, served as Governor. Her passion for education continues as Chief Executive Officer of Idaho Women in Leadership (I-WIL), a bipartisan nonprofit organization that advances Idaho women in government and business through its leadership
training programs. I-WIL’s goal is to inspire women to “Step up, step out and lead.” In the Political Leadership Training Series, “We will recruit people who are interested in or thinking of running for office and help them understand what that looks like,” Otter says. “We’ll help identify the variables that you can control, and teach you how to tuck and roll with the ones that you can’t.” Through the Business/Corporate Leadership Training Series, the organization helps develop mentor programs within corporations and provide keynote speakers to assist with professional development. “We’re going to be talking about different skill sets that women bring to business and how that affects your return on investment,” Otter says. “There’s a lot of research on the fact that women on boards do help the bottom line for companies.” I-WIL recruits for both programs through civic clubs and professional organizations. “It’s not so much just for professional women as much as it is for women who want to be involved in leadership,” Otter explains. “Leadership is a learned trait and a learned characteristic.” Her own leadership skills have led to her most recent success - launching a career in real estate where she ranked in the top 14% of agents in her first year. She serves her real estate clients with the same commitment and purpose she displayed as First Lady, helping Idahoans achieve their goals and dreams.

Women Share Career and Life Lessons in a Heartfelt Note to Themselves
Meridian Lifestyle asked local business owners to write a note giving their younger selves some advice. Their responses were as diverse as the women themselves - tender and heartfelt, practical and wise, but all written with kindness and generosity. Looking back on your life experiences with a healthy perspective can be a great reminder of what led you to where you are today. Try writing one yourself, and share your note with all of us on #MeridianLifestyle

In true organizer’s fashion I’ve made a list: 1) Being a hard working, good person is enough 2) You don’t have to be all things to all people 3) If someone doesn’t like you, that’s more about them then it is about you 4) Confidence will come but in the meantime envision how a confident, capable person would handle a specific situation and embody that…soon it will become natural 5) Surround yourself with people who you want to be like. Words of Advice/Wisdom: “I think my biggest piece of advice to myself, or other young ladies, is to work hard and never give up! There were times I was burned out to the max, and still am, but it made me the strong woman I am today. Life is tough. Don’t think things will ever be handed to you, ESPECIALLY if you become an entrepreneur. It was always my life goal to own my own business, and now that I am the co-owner of NorthStar Spirits, and the full owner of Sip Idaho, it has totally been worth it. Seeing you in Jr High, I know nothing is making sense and you are afraid. When you think no one is seeing you... they are....when you feel unlovable, you are loved. Love and value yourself, rely on your spirituality. It’s ok you’re not college bound, don’t be embarrassed. Common sense, work ethic and drive will be enough. Take chances. Watch for doors to open, run, squeeze through but always with gratitude, kindness and humility. Your dreams in business come true, but through trials and loss. Don’t be so terrified to make mistakes. Yes, mistakes will STING. They’ll strike a blow to your self-image and self-confidence, but in the long run, they are priceless. Your missteps, far more than your successes, will teach you important lessons about your world, your choices, and most importantly, your true self. “The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing. He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn and feel and change and grow and love and live.”― Leo Buscaglia. The people who are certain they’re experts at everything stopped learning years ago. Don’t stop challenging yourself, listening, learning, trying new things. Six and a half years later I am going strong and loving it all. Running a business isn’t always easy but I am thankful for the community that we live in. Professional advice to twenty year old me with big goals and unearned confidence. Don’t focus or worry about being personally successful. Invest early on in relationships, work hard for the greater good and realize your contribution to the world creates abundance. There is room for everyone to win, but the more you look outside yourself to help those around you through support, mentorship or creating opportunity, the greater fulfillment you will feel. No one can accomplish great things alone. Embrace your vulnerability, know your strengths, but better yet, identify your weaknesses early and understand that most great things are accomplished by identifying what you don’t know and reaching out to others for their talents and expertise. Not everything will turn out like you plan! Be flexible and see opportunities as they come to you. Don’t fall in love too quickly! Don’t be in love with the idea of being in love...really learn about the person you are spending time with. Travel more! It boosts your creativity and exposes you to new, amazing people and places. Work hard but enjoy your time away from work. Learn to be a great communicator! Public speaking and presentation skills are extremely crucial. Learn how to express what you are thinking. Find a mentor who is your biggest cheerleader such as FFA teacher Fred Beckman and government teacher/ track/football coach John Srholec. Slow down and chill out.... Savor life...build your work around your life and not the other way around. LAUGH OFTEN!!! Be happy and productive and choose friends who want the same type of lifestyle. SAVE MONEY!!! Save something out of every paycheck even if it’s for shoveling a driveway or babysitting the neighbor kids. Be good to other people. Everyone is different and that is what makes this world glorious. SENECA HULL LEADS LANDSCAPE NURSERY FRANZ WITTE INTO THEIR NEXT CHAPTER

GROWING HER BUSINESS Fourth generation Idahoan and landscaping enthusiast Seneca Hull has been in the garden industry nearly all her life. “As a kid I was forced to work in the nursery, watering and weeding, and pretty much grew up there. After I graduated from Capital High School, I went to Boise State Universiry and got a degree in Marketing,” Seneca shared. “As I was getting close to graduating, I realized how much I really loved the landscape and nursery industry. Once it was my own choice, not mandatory, I decided to stay in the company.” Guided by her father (and company namesake) Franz Witte, Seneca was taught almost everything she knows about the landscaping and nursery industry from him. This ingrained knowledge led her to where she is today—as company president. Armed with nothing but a passion for landscapes, the business blossomed from humble roots. What started as a summer job for Franz eventually became Franz Witte Garden Center, one of Idaho’s premier landscaping and nursery companies.

Fast forward more than 50 years and Franz Witte opened its shiny greenhouse doors of their new Nampa location on the soil of historic Naugle Hereford Ranch. The Naugle Hereford Ranch long served the Treasure Valley as cattle farmers demonstrated their stewardship of the land from the mid-1900s. Soon to celebrate their 51-year anniversary, Franz Witte Garden Center planted its new property on old roots in May 2021, and took large strides to preserve as much historical integrity from the original site as possible. “The property has so much history and we’re so glad we kept so many of the old buildings, they just ground us with all the new things around them,” Seneca said. “The new garden center is so fun, and we will continue to grow the location to add new and exciting things to make it even more of a destination. Plants are still our core love, but all the new lines we can sell in this beautiful place are so fun! I love the candles and pillows and fun kitchen items, and the houseplants!” With 40 years in the business, Seneca still very much enjoys her career at Franz Witte.

She’s played many roles at the company, culminating in her current position as president. “The thing I love most about it is growing the company by growing our people. There are many employees who have been here a long time, and seeing them take on new challenges and encouraging them to reach higher and learn more is so rewarding. I can’t wait until one of them wants to take over my role!” Visit Franz Witte Garden Center’s new location at 20005 11th Ave N in Nampa. You can also visit them online at franzwitte.com.

Turkish Kofte Burgers INGREDIENTS GREEK STYLE RED WINE VINAIGRETTE: • 2 lemons, juiced • 1-2 tbsp red wine vinegar • 2 tsp oregano (or 1 tsp fresh) • 1 tsp garlic salt • 1 garlic clove, creamed • 1 tsp honey • ½ cup olive oil • ½ sweet yellow onion, thinly sliced • Kosher salt & freshly cracked pepper to taste TURKISH KOFTE BURGERS: • 1 lb ground beef, 20% fat 80 % lean • 1 garlic clove, creamed or grated • ½ sweet yellow onion, grated • 1 piece day old bread (or toast), soaked in whole milk • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp oregano • 1 tsp sweet paprika • 1 tsp onion powder • 1 tsp coriander seeds, crushed • ¼ cup flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped • 1 egg, beaten • Kosher salt & freshly cracked pepper • Olive oil for cooking GREEK SALAD: • 3 heads of romaine, chopped • 2-3 Persian cucumbers, chopped • ½ cup Cherry tomatoes, sliced in half • 2 Cubanelle or other mild green peppers, sliced in rings • ½ cup flat-leaf parsley, leaves torn & tender stems minced • 1 tbsp mint, finely chopped • ½ cup Pepperoncini peppers, sliced • ½ cup kalamata olives, pitted • 4 oz Feta cheese, crumbled DIRECTIONS • Make the salad dressing in a medium bowl: combine lemon juice, red wine vinegar, oregano, garlic salt, creamed garlic, and honey, then slowly whisk in the olive oil to emulsify. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add onion and allow to sit until ready to dress. • In a small bowl, combine your spices with 1 tsp kosher salt. • In a large bowl, prepare your meat blend. Add spices and salt, parsley and egg. Lift from the bottom of the bowl and press all ingredients together to evenly distribute, being careful not to overwork the meat. Stop mixing when herbs and spices are just distributed. With damp hand, shape meat mix into kofte burgers – you can make them regular size quarter pounders (there will be 4 of them), or more egg sized and shaped which are nice for making platters. Set aside on a plate and store covered in the refrigerator until 20 minutes before you are ready to use.

• Brush a grill pan or cast-iron skillet with 2 tsp olive oil and set over high heat. Once it is hot and oil on the surface glistens, drop the heat to medium. • Place the patties on the hot surface, spaced 2 inches apart. Grill for about 4 minutes until nicely browned on one side. Patties should easily release. Turn and brown the other side for another 3-4 minutes until cooked through and both sides have a rich, golden brown crust. • In a large salad bowl, add romaine, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, parsley, mint, pepperoncini peppers, kalamata olives, and feta cheese. Toss with desired amount of salad dressing, and serve with a portion of kofte burgers!
Whole Roasted Cauliflower INGREDIENTS • 1 Cauliflower head • ½ cup parsley, leaves pulled and tender stems minced • 2 tbsp pulled Thai basil or mint, chopped • 1 Fresno chile, thinly sliced • Kosher salt plus • Tahini Sauce: • 3 tbsp of Tahini • 1 garlic clove • Juice of 1 lemon • 2 tbsp olive oil • 4 tbsp ice water plus ice cube • Sea salt and freshly cracked pepper, plus Flaky salt to garnish DIRECTIONS • Preheat the oven to 450F. • Fill a large pot with 2-3 inches of water and bring to a boil over high heat. Add cauliflower head, cover and steam 15-20 minutes, adding more hot water if needed. • Place steamed cauliflower on a rack over a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with kosher salt. Put in the oven for 50-55 minutes or until it is crisp and golden brown over the entire surface, and a knife easily inserts into the thickest part of the stem with only a little resistance. • In a medium bowl, mix together Tahini Sauce. Grate your garlic into the tahini and squeeze in fresh lemon juice. Whisk in 2 tbsp of olive oil, then slowly add in 4 tbsp of ice water & an ice cube. Whisk briskly another 2-3 minutes until the sauce gets gently runny and fluffy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. • Once your cauliflower is roasted, allow to cool 5 minutes, then remove to a serving plate. Generously drizzle Tahini sauce over top of the cauliflower, making sure a few little puddles accumulate – all the better for dragging bites through! Scatter the fresh herbs and chili over top before completing with a drizzle of olive oil and flaky salt.

German Chocolate Cake INGREDIENTS • Butter, for greasing the pans • 1 ¾ cups all -purpose flour, plus more for pans • 2 cups sugar • 2 teaspoons baking soda • 1 teaspoon baking powder • ¼ teaspoon sea salt • ¾ cups good cocoa powder • 1 bag of chocolate pudding mix • 1 ½ cup buttermilk, shaken • ½ cup avocado oil • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract • 2 extra-large eggs, at room temperature • 1 ½ cup boiled water COCONUT PECAN ICING: • 2 sticks (1 cup) unsalted butter • 2 (14-oz) cans condensed milk • 2 tsp vanilla extract • ½ tsp iodized salt • 6 egg yolks • 8 oz pecans, chopped • 14 oz sweetened shredded coconut DIRECTIONS • Preheat the oven to 350F. Butter two 8 inch x 2 inch round cake pans. Line with parchment paper, then butter and flour the pans. • In a medium mixing bowl, combine all of the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cocoa powder and pudding mix. • In another bowl, combine the buttermilk, avocado oil, vanilla extract and eggs with an electric mixer for 30 seconds. With the mixer on low speed, slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry. Scrape down the bottom with a rubber spatula to ensure you have all of the dry mix incorporated with the wet. With the mixer still on low, slowly add in the hot water. Scrape down the bottom of the bowl with a rubber spatula once again to make sure that everything is well combined and evenly distributed. • Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until a cake tester comes out clean. Cool cake in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a flat plate or cake pedestal to let them cool completely (approx. 1 hour). • To make the frosting, melt butter in a double boiler over a pot of boiling water. Add in condensed milk, vanilla extract, salt and 6 egg yolks while whisking constantly for approx. 15 minutes. Cook until thickened. Stir in coconut and pecans. Mix it all together with a rubber spatula until well combined. Allow to cool and set for 20 minutes. • With a knife or spatula, spread the top of first layer of cake with frosting. Place the second layer of cake on top of the first and spread the frosting evenly on the top. a day just for mom MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATIONS AND GIFTS SHE’LL TREASURE ARTICLE BY KIMBERLY BLAKER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
“I realized when you look at your mother, you are looking at the purest love you will ever know.” —Mitch Albom The role of mothers in shaping their daughters’ and sons’ lives is unsurpassed. Mothers teach us to love, be strong, be confident, persist, live life to its fullest, and be the best we can be. Mother’s Day is just around the corner. So, this year give her a gift from your heart and your undivided time to make it a special day she’ll treasure.
MOTHER’S DAY BRUNCH Serve your mom a scrumptious breakfast or take her out for Mother’s Day brunch. If you prepare it yourself, the following menu will be sure to please: fruit salad, juice, waffles or pancakes with her favorite blueberry or strawberry topping, Canadian bacon or fresh sausage, omelets or eggs benedict, homemade hash browns, and coffee cake or Danishes. Also, don’t forget the fresh cut flowers for the table centerpiece.
SPRING BLOOMS What better way to spend a spring day than together in your mother’s garden? Pick up her favorite annuals and perennials: begonias, petunias, violets, morning glories, poppies, marigolds, snapdragons, or mums. Then enjoy a relaxing day together, planting and sprucing up her flower garden.
MOTHER/DAUGHTER OR MOTHER/SON MEMORIES Give your mom a keepsake that’ll be dear to her heart. Create your own memory book with a scrapbook or journal. Include photos and memories about special times the two of you have had together; the most important things you remember about your mother from your childhood; how she has inspired you; and the times you look forward to in the future.
THE MAIN EVENT Surprise your mother with tickets to an event she’s been dying to see: the ballet, a concert, play or musical, a favorite sporting event, or comedy show. Be sure to tell her you have something special planned (but not what), so she’ll be all yours for the day or evening.
EXCURSION Spring is the perfect time to tour the countryside. Take a car ride with your mom, and enjoy the vivid colors of spring, blue skies, beautiful blossoms, and other scenic sights.
FAMILY PORTRAIT If your family is like most, you’re well overdue for an updated family portrait. What better time to have it done than on Mother’s Day? Schedule to have your family’s picture taken at a studio, or hire a photographer for a photoshoot in the park. Coordinate with CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / M E R I D I A N

family members in advance on the formality and color scheme, so outfits don’t clash.
THE POWER OF POETRY You don’t need to be a poet to write a special verse for your mother. In your poem, share what it was like growing up with her, how she influenced your life, or tell her just what she means to you. Then print it on stationery, and frame it.
A LITTLE PAMPERING Mothers spend many years pampering their children giving bubble baths, washing hair, and caring for them when they’re ill. Give your mother a gift certificate for pampering at the spa where she can enjoy a massage, hair design, a manicure and pedicure, or a soothing facial.
WEEKEND GETAWAY Put together a weekend package designed especially for your mom. Choose a city that offers excellent shopping, art museums and cultural centers, or even a quaint historic town with shops, cafes, and parks. Leave the dates for the getaway open so she can make the trip at her convenience, or so the two of you can make plans together.
KEEP IT SIMPLE Plan a relaxing day together, enjoying the outdoors. Head to a nearby park where you can meander along nature trails reminiscing.
ESPECIALLY FOR MOTHERS Buy a book for and about moms. Consider one of the following: • Mother: A Cradle to Hold Me by Maya Angelou • I Love You, Mom by Amylee Weeks • Why a Daughter Needs a Mom by Gregory E. Lang • Why a Son Needs a Mom by Gregory E.
