Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. Your home being a refuge, certain decorating choices help foster that sense of peace, and how you decorate a space can have a huge impact on how you feel while you’re in it. A well-designed space filled with items you love can be calming and relieve stress, while cluttered rooms can have the opposite effect on your mood and mental health. In this issue you will find some tips on how to transform your home into a personal sanctuary. These decorating ideas will help you create a soothing, stress-free environment you’ll enjoy every day. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek inside some local homes that boast beautiful designs that I hope will leave you inspired. From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness.

In live edge furniture, the original gnarled shape of the edge of a tree beneath its bark is not sawed off, but carefully preserved for a raw look. Natural edges retain the unique personality of the tree, so each piece is a work of art. Live edge slabs are used as serving trays, bowls, dining tables, desks, bathroom vanities, and even kitchen island countertops. Many who appreciate live edge products are also committed to purchasing wood that has been sustainably harvested. Costa Rica created a tracking system where only selective cutting on private land is allowed to ensure the sustainability of their wood slabs. The current deforestation rate in Costa Rica is 0%, with the current total land surface of covered forest at 52% and growing. The success of their system has reversed the decline of its forests, something the nation takes very seriously. Drew and Suzanne McDaniel, owners of Impact Imports in Boise, are similarly committed. They are proud to sell legally and sustainably harvested live edge wood slabs, and visited their Costa Rican supplier to see the process with their own eyes. “We import several different species from Costa Rica, primarily Monkeypod and Parota,” Drew explained. “We also inspected their ability to consistently kiln dry the wood slabs,” he says. “Our climate is so dry, any wood slab which isn’t kiln dried will eventually crack or twist in our environment.”

As the premier Treasure Valley importer, they have installed custom pieces in some of the finest homes and commercial spaces throughout Idaho, including Wood River and Valley Counties. “The majority of our custom orders are for dining tables and bar tops,” says Drew. “With so many people now working from home, we’ve also seen an increase in orders for natural edge wood slab desks.” Some of their creative pieces have included headboards, wall art, barn doors, bathroom vanities and entertainment shelves. Waterfall and resin-filled tables are also popular as the style works in both traditional and modern interiors. They create custom furniture for residential and commercial spaces alike. “One of our more recent projects was building 28 tables for the beautiful new Coa de Jima restaurant in downtown Boise,” Drew said, “including a large round dining table measuring 75” in diameter that seats eight to ten people.” Impact Imports has been commissioned to build many unique and diverse projects over the years, including shelving and fireplace mantels, coffee tables, console tables and side tables. “We also sell locally harvested and kiln dried hard wood slabs,” says Drew. Just in case you have a project of your own.

BUY IDAHO CAPITOL SHOW Perhaps one of the most important things we can do in our lives is to establish a sense of community, to grow and connect with those around us. Whether they are down the road or in a nearby town, fostering that sense of connectedness is what makes Idaho one of the greatest places to live. For Jennifer Mauk, the concept of community support is exactly why she joined Buy Idaho in 2016. With the organization’s long-standing presence in Idaho, it seemed like a natural fit for Mauk, who quickly became Executive Director in 2018. Mauk and her Member Relationship Manager, Wyatt King, wear many hats for Buy Idaho, including as large-scale event planners. Events like the upcoming Buy Idaho Capitol Show are vital to showcasing Idaho’s many products and services.

“This year we celebrate 28 years and are so excited to be able to once again put on this event in our community,” shared Mauk. “On March 2, 2022, from 9 am - 3pm, around 100 local businesses will take over all four floors of the Capitol rotunda in downtown Boise for an epic showcase of all things Idaho. At this event we invite the community to come meet the candy makers, the grain growers, the swag creators, and the honeybee keepers that make and provide us with their unique products.” At the event, Idahoans will have the chance to chat face-to-face with the business owners providing services in their communities. Everyone from local bankers to air-freshener makers will be in attendance.

“Idaho Day is an opportunity to showcase the Gem State’s treasured past, thriving present, and unlimited future.”

On March 4th we celebrate Idaho Day, which marks the 159th anniversary of the establishment of Idaho Territory by President Abraham Lincoln on March 4, 1863. It is remarkable to observe that the creation of Idaho began with our greatest and most beloved President whose plans for westward expansion helped settle Idaho and transform her into the 43rd state in 1890. At the beginning of 1860 there were perhaps only a few dozen European Americans living in the land area now known as Idaho. No towns existed until later that year when farmers from Utah established Franklin. During the next three years, thousands of miners began to f lock to the Clearwater drainage, the Boise Basin and sites near Salmon where gold had been discovered. The miners and tradesmen who followed needed organized government. Lincoln needed their gold to help win the Civil War, so he established the Territory of Idaho. In an address to Congress on December 8, 1863, President Lincoln stated that the mineral resources of Idaho “are proving far richer than has been heretofore understood.” Former Idaho Lt. Governor and Lincoln scholar, David Leroy, has written about the surprising number of Lincoln connections to Idaho. Lincoln appointed his close friend William Wallace as Idaho’s first governor and first delegate to Congress, as well as Idaho’s first 15 territorial officials. While in Washington DC, Wallace was invited by Lincoln to join him and the First Lady at Ford’s Theater on April 14, 1865, the day of his assassination. Wallace did not attend because of his wife’s illness.

28

I NSP IR E D BY | L IFE + CULTURE

Among many other Idaho officials and citizens with Lincoln connections was Mason Brayman, Idaho’s seventh territorial governor and close friend of the President. Brayman rented Lincoln’s home in Springfield, Illinois during his term in Congress and campaigned for Lincoln during the presidential election of 1860. He assisted Lincoln with logistics at the Cooper Union speech. Fred Dubois, Idaho territorial delegate to Congress and first U.S. Senator, grew up almost across the street from the Lincoln home. As a boy he romped with Lincoln and played with his sons, Willie and Tad. They once played a practical joke on Lincoln by tying a string between a tree and a fence on top a wall in front of the family home which knocked Lincoln’s hat off as he walked up to the house. Not only is Lincoln connected to Idaho through political appointments and friends, he also promoted projects which helped establish Idaho. Legislation leading to the construction of the transcontinental railroad and the implementation of the Homestead Act in 1862 helped bring settlers to Idaho making eventual statehood possible. There was, however, one major threat to achieving statehood. In 1887, Congress passed legislation which would have given north Idaho to Washington State, while a second plan was being prepared to transfer southern Idaho to Nevada which was losing population after a decline in mining activities. It was a close call. The bill went to the desk of President Grover Cleveland for his signature, but Idaho Territorial Governor Edward A. Stevenson was not going to allow

Idaho Territorial Governor Edward A. Stevenson

the dissolution of Idaho. Edward Stevenson loved Idaho. He had grown up with Idaho, arriving in the Boise basin in 1863, the same year the Territory of Idaho was established. He immediately organized an effective protest movement which convinced the president to veto the legislation. Idaho was saved. Governor Stevenson then went to work with Senator Fred Dubois and others to secure statehood for Idaho which was achieved on July 3, 1890. Sadly, the man who saved Idaho is almost forgotten. Edward Stevenson’s grave in the Pioneer Cemetery just east of the Capitol Building in Boise is easy to find, however. You might even place flowers on his grave to thank him for saving Idaho. Currently, Idaho is the fastest growing state in America. In land area, Idaho is about the size of Great Britain with more roadless wilderness areas than any other state except Alaska. She has 3,100 miles of rivers (more than any other state), more than 2,000 lakes, and the deepest river gorge in North America. Idaho has the second largest unbroken stretch of rich irrigated farmland in America and is the number one producer of potatoes, barley, trout, and small seeds. She also ranks high in the production of cattle, wool, dairy products, timber and minerals. Known as the Gem State, Idaho produces 72 types of precious and semi-precious stones—more than any other state. Idaho is abundantly rich in wildlife, which includes the largest concentration of nesting eagles, hawks and falcons in the world—all located within a 40-minute drive from Boise. According to FBI statistics, Idaho has the lowest per capita crime rate in the West. We love Idaho. Her name invokes images of wide open spaces, lovely winding rivers, and mountain skies fading into sunset. Romance lies in her name. Freedom lies in her name. MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Your Guide to Choosing Color That Fits Your Lifestyle

ARTICLE BY KAY BIRD | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

32

D E C OR T R E N D S | A RTS + CULTURE

If you’re looking for ways to refresh your living space and add colors into your life, look no farther than these four style tips. Home design is all about incorporating more of yourself and your lifestyle into your space, whether it’s answering your need for a serene escape or dialing up the energy with vibrant surroundings.

your sign with one-coat coverage, you can create a luxurious space that reflects the real you, and do it in record time.

BRING IN NATURE

TAURUS - Gilded Linen: This clean, cozy color makes spaces feel open, perfect for celebrating togetherness.

Soothing earth tones help bring a sense of calm and balance indoors. When designing with nature in mind, use gray-green tones to connect your aesthetic with the serene elements of the outdoors. Incorporate nature’s palette with greens in fabrics, accessories and even on the walls. Wood and stone materials naturally complement these shades for a look that’s cohesively pleasing and peaceful.

STYLISH SOPHISTICATION If you’re aiming to infuse some sophistication with an update to a favorite space, opt for a monochromatic look in a dark (almost black) hue. The approach is simultaneously bold and classic, but the secret to this trend is finding a shade that’s rich and deep, but not quite black, then complementing it with fabrics and furnishings that let the hint of color shine.

ADD COMFORT AND WARMTH Treating your home like a sanctuary never goes out of style, and one way to create a soothing, inviting space is through the use of cozy neutrals. Whether it’s applied to a bedroom retreat or a more bustling space like the living room, a neutral palette can add to the allure of comfort and warmth. Keep the visual interest strong by incorporating subtle patterns, textures and layers of complementary neutral colors.

ARIES - Sunset Curtains: A warm and soothing color that supports a transformational year full of new opportunities.

GEMINI - Grey Suit: This is a color of warmth and versatility, a signature combination for Geminis. CANCER - Delightful Moon: A spirited, playful color inspires a year of growth and adventure. LEO - Mountain River: A dreamy color inviting inspiration for a year filled with abundance. VIRGO - Subtle Peach: It’s the year of partnerships for Virgos; this harmonious color works well alongside others but can also stand on its own. LIBRA - Orchid Ash: A cool and breezy color keeps it simple so Libras can focus on a year of vitality. SCORPIO - Fired Earth: This warm and approachable color is perfect for Scorpios who plan to bring new people into their lives. SAGITTARIUS - Rustic Oak: A relaxing and comforting color that welcomes coziness. CAPRICORN - Blanched Thyme: For Capricorns, this is the year of variety, and this is a refreshing tone to support change.

CONNECT WITH YOUR INNER SELF Creating a living space that is uniquely yours requires understanding your inner motivations, traits and talents. A fun way to choose a color might be your zodiac sign, a reflection of the earth’s orientation to the sun on your birthday. Color experts at Valspar partnered with the AstroTwins to explain which 2022 Color of the Year best aligns with each zodiac sign. When you combine

AQUARIUS - Country Charm: This hue provides warmth and stability for a year of productivity. PISCES - Lilac Lane: A playful pastel hue that brings softness along with optimism and renewal. Find more 2022 color trends and design inspiration at Valspar.com.

A Guide to Home Wine Storage ARTICLE BY GREG NERUDA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TARA BRUNER

I’m sure most people would prefer to store their wine in cellars or wine fridges instead of an overcrowded garage or inside a spidery crawl space. Yuck, and ouch! Fortunately, kitchen culture has changed our storage habits. Charismatic chefs on cooking shows are mere steps away from a beautiful wine fridge where they pull a bottle, splash some wine in pan, then pour a little for themselves and a lot more for their guests. Here’s why I also decided to install a wine fridge in my own kitchen.

Simply put, it’s the perfect environment to be kinder and gentler to your wine. The temperature control and dark space are optimal both short and long term. Light, fluctuations in temperature, dry humidity, and general banging around are not good for your delicate Pinots. Proper storage gives the wines you’re saving for special moments a better chance of surviving the elements that would render them “out of condition”…and prematurely lost if not handled properly. Furthermore, it’s not fun running out of wine while entertaining - especially sparkling wines, white wines, red wines and dessert wines, just to name a few. Also, I like white wine very close to a sauté pan, and to sip a bit while cooking. It’s the scenario that turns cooking from a chore into a pleasure. With my favorite music playing in the background and delicious aromatics arising from the stovetop, having wine close by just makes everything easier and more enjoyable. While most of us dream of elaborate wine cellars in our home, many decide on a more realistic approach - wine fridges! They come in all shapes and sizes - from under the counter to full walls of storage. So, which one is best? Our research took us to one of the region’s most beautiful showrooms for the modern kitchen, Mountainland Design. If you’re a kitchen lover, this showroom is the ideal place to drool over state-of-the-art kitchen design in general, and wine fridges in particular. I was able to speak with the experts to see all my options. If you’re just an occasional wine sipper then under-the-counter storage may be best. If you’re a serious collector then indulge in a full wall refrigerator with built-in storage for wine glasses and accessories. With so many brands to choose from - Thermadore, Wolf Sub Zero, Jenn-air, True, there is definitely a fridge for everyone. My perfect solution was an under-the-counter, dualzone control, modestly-priced unit that holds thirty bottles of wine. This makes entertaining much more versatile and fun. Now I can put some down to cellar. Maybe I’m not particularly improving with age, but I’m certainly enjoying a red wine that does. Cheers!

AARON FAGERSONALTIUS GROUP

SELLING POINTS: A nice open and updated kitchen is the most important selling point. When sellers ask me where to spend money to get the most out of their listing, kitchen is #1 on that list, closely followed by bathrooms. Buyers are looking for many things. The items at the top of most lists are open floor plan, updated/modern kitchen, and bathrooms with a walk-in shower. An RV bay is huge these days. A lot of new developments are requiring builders to include an RV bay. LISTING PREP: The most impactful thing, in my experience, is having the home professionally staged. It usually nets sellers an extra $10,000. First impressions are very important, so having a yard maintenance company come and trim bushes and trees and even freshen up bark or gravel to really make the yard pop is great. A professional cleaning of the interior of the home and windows is key. SELLER/BUYER ADVICE: Make sure to hire an experienced agent. Don’t just hire the first agent you talk to. Interview two or three and look up their qualifications online. This decision can make all the difference in your experience during the process. Sellers will net more money and sell their home faster. Buyers will have a better chance of getting their offer accepted in a competitive market. CONTINUED >

HIGHLY SOUGHT-AFTER FEATURES: Wood floors (either real or laminate), a good layout, and a primary bedroom on the main is preferable. Good bathrooms and, depending on the price, at least one on the main, one primary and one upstairs. Most people would like a yard they can envision playing and hanging out in. FOODIE CENTRAL: A lot of buyers are looking for a clean, well-organized, updated kitchen. If the kitchen is not updated, then it needs to present well: freshly cleaned, painted, strippeddown countertops (i.e., remove the stuff!). It really depends on the price range. SELLER ADVICE: Highly consider staging, using a “Coming Soon” status to get more exposure, and professional photos. Consumers are so visual; the photos are the first impression. Also use a virtual tour! BUYER ADVICE: PATIENCE! This is a tough market, but there really is a home out there for everyone. I strongly believe in homeownership for all. Buyers may have to put in several offers to get what they want, but it always works out! I have never had a buyer regret in the end the homes they missed. Also, get creative. I have sold many duplexes to people who are out-priced of the single-family market. They can live in one side and rent out the other to offset the payment.

PANTRIES, AND OVENS, AND SINKS, OH MY!: Kitchens are a popular focus, absolutely. Homebuyers are on the hunt for farmhouse-style kitchens with white cabinetry, black accents, warm barnwood style flooring, as well as mixing in gold hardware and lighting. DESIRABLE FEATURES: We live in Idaho, drive trucks, and like toys: large garages are a must. The option of a full bath and bedroom on the main level is also in high demand. Designer features are always a crowd favorite. Think shiplap, barn doors, mud benches with hooks, and designer lighting accents. CREATE YOUR LIST: The home buying process can be stressful. One thing we suggest is coming (up) with a small list of wants. This allows us to narrow down what will and won’t work for the buyer, whether that’s needing more space or downsizing. We have options. CONSIDER UPDATING DATED DÉCOR: Dark colors, outdated cabinets, and appliances. And if in need of it, a fresh coat of paint. FIXER-UPPER PROJECTS FOR AFTER THE SALE: Our buyers have shared fun front porch projects, DIY wine bars, and custom trim installations. BUYER ADVICE: Don’t believe everything you hear (about the market). We have over 150 homes available across the Treasure Valley for quick move in. Interest rates are amazing and the time to buy is now. MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / M E R I D I A N
