February 2022 PUBLISHER
Greg Gewalt | greg.gewalt@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Kimber Patterson | kimber.patterson@citylifestyle.com
Passion! It’s a word that can bring to mind many things. February is the month of hearts, flowers and chocolate as we remember those most important to us during Valentine’s Day. Sure, it’s just another greeting card holiday, but also a reminder of finding passion in our lives. What is your passion? For me it’s time out in nature, photography, and spending time with family and friends enjoying the wide open spaces. I never feel more connected to nature and my place on this planet than when exploring the spectacular scenery that surrounds us. Whether it is like me and photography, art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of art in different ways, and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something and that resonates with us. I have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local products, makers and artists in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. While most people think the month of February is only about Valentine’s day, rather February is about celebrating friendship, love, family, health, and even black history month. So, as you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Pay someone a compliment. Go have a glass of wine with someone you admire. Surprise a friend with flowers. In fact, surprise yourself with flowers! Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community.

A Random Act of Flowers Using flowers to feel and share love is one of life’s greatest and simplest pleasures ARTICLE BY PAIGE JOHNSTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNY LOSEE
There is a connection between flowers and positive emotions. Flowers enhance moods as well as our homes, and make us feel lighter and happier which in turn make us feel connected to the earth and ultimately to one another. For centuries they have been used as a medium for expressing one’s love or gratitude as well as holding space for all of life’s celebrations. Studies have shown that people who are given
a large bunch of flowers feel happier than those who are given money; patients recover more quickly in hospitals when flowers are present; diners order more food and drink in restaurants decorated with flowers; and a good mood lingers for three days after receiving flowers for any reason or no reason. There are lots of ways to use flowers as a way to feel and share love. By adding just a few pops CONTINUED >

of flowers throughout your home you can instantly change the ambiance! During the late months of winter this can really help keep spirits high. Make it a point to add fresh orchids to your nightstand. Orchids look like a soft sculpture more than a floral arrangement, and their color and fragrance improves a bedroom’s ambiance. For your dining table, fill a vase full of evergreens, leaves, or grasses. Tulips are often associated with the spring; however, their season actually begins in the winter. They have the ability to transform any room with their elegant and loose beauty. A single vibrant gerbera daisy makes a playful addition to a kitchen or bathroom, or create a gorgeous bouquet with daisies surrounded by roses and mums. While red roses are traditional for Valentine’s Day, take some purple inspiration from the amethyst, February’s birthstone. Mix a purple hydrangea with lavender roses for an unexpected take on the usual arrangement. Planting flowers in your garden is another way to share their beauty, and you get the benefit of foraging in your own flowerbed. Here in Idaho, as the first blooms begin to bud in late February and early March, you’ll find forsythia, tulips, daffodils and muscari around the Treasure Valley. Buttercups can often be found in bloom in February in the Boise Foothills. To love and to be loved is really what being human is all about. When enjoying and sharing the magic of nature, our entire being lights up, and we feel more alive, safe and seen. When we give the gift of flowers to others or ourselves, we are giving the gift of pure love.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR FLOWERS Our Basic Flower Care Tips for Healthy and Long Lasting Flowers and Foliage INTERACT WITH YOUR FLOWERS: As your flower arrangement begins to die, try arranging and rearranging until the last flower is gone. WATER LEVEL: Should be filled to the brim completely so all stems can drink. WATER CLEANLINESS: Should look clear and clean. Keep fresh and change out every 2-3 days. STEMS: Give each stem a trim every time you give your flowers fresh water TEMPERATURE OF THE ENVIRONMENT: Not too cold and not too hot CONTAINER: A clean, fresh vase and basic maintenance will go a long way to making your flowers last longer. forever friends I first met Reginald Reeves in 1953 when my 8th grade buddy Kent Misseldine convinced me to visit Reeves at his law office to see his stamp collection. We were two unannounced and unkempt 13-year-old kids, and I was instantly impressed by the generosity of this man who altered his busy schedule to talk about the educational value of stamp collecting. I was even more impressed when I discovered that he paid my friend Bud Cheney three silver dollars to mow his lawn when the going rate was one dollar! From his youth, the generous and selfless disposition of Idaho Falls attorney Reginald Reeves has been fixed upon the needs of others. In 1950, during Reginald’s second year at the University of Idaho College of Law, Army General Omar Bradley issued a plea to the American people asking for blood donations to meet the urgent needs of soldiers wounded or injured during rising combat operations in the Korean War. Inspired to action, Reginald helped organize the first college blood drive in American history, and then gave his first pint of blood. Every dormitory on campus had a station for donation, and each floor in every dormitory, fraternity, and sorority house had a place to donate blood. A competition was organized between dormitories and floors and then, through student newspapers, between colleges and universities throughout America. The University of Idaho came in second in the nation, just behind Harvard University.

“From his youth, the generous and selfless disposition of Idaho Falls attorney Reginald Reeves has been fixed upon the needs of others.”
Starting with that first pint in 1950, Reginald has continued to give blood throughout his life, reaching an astounding total of 50 gallons donated by 2020, which surely must be a state record, and an amount which potentially could save 1200 military and civilian lives. I assumed he would discontinue giving blood after reaching that lofty goal, but was mistaken. Even now, at 94 years old, he continues to give blood every 56 days. Reginald Reeves gives life. Blood and life are not all Reginald has given. He founded the Sun Valley Charitable Foundation through which humanitarian aid has been provided to destitute and impoverished individuals in Boise, ten CONTINUED >

eastern Idaho counties, two in southwestern Montana, two in southwestern Wyoming, and several foreign countries. Millions of dollars of donated items were gathered from businesses and individuals, including medicine, medical equipment, personal care products, food, clothing, household goods, eye glasses, computers, books, toys, and other items for distribution to homeless shelters, nursing homes, domestic violence centers, low income housing, senior citizen centers, veteran organizations, schools, and Indian reservations. Nineteen volunteers assisted in the collection and distribution of goods to over 2000 individuals and 500 families every week. Hundreds of computers were sent to schools within the United States and developing nations. Medical and hospital equipment were sent to the US Virgin Islands, Nepal, Vietnam, Kosovo, and Guatemala. Lt. Colonel Reeves also served his nation, state and community through a life long association with the military. Volunteering during World War II at age 17, he eventually became a Lt. Colonel in the Army Reserves. He was a platoon leader in the 382nd Infantry Regiment, taught ROTC at the University of Idaho, and Military Government at the Presidio in San Francisco. In Idaho Falls, Reeves worked closely with Captain Jerry Wadsworth and the Navy League in the promotion of patriotic events. The two men co-founded the elite “Cedar Badge” program for the area Boy Scout Council. Reg once told me he never made much money as a lawyer because he spent so much time doing charity work. During a visit a few years ago, I noticed the time capsule 1960’s vintage décor of his Cambridge Street law office. Reg read my mind and simply said he never had enough money to modernize.

Born in Greensboro, North Carolina to James H. and Ellen Boyd Reeves, Reg’s father was a butcher, but eventually operated a billiard parlor after losing a hand. His mother was an elementary school teacher. A child prodigy, Reginald started school in the 3rd grade at the age of 4. He received a degree in Mathematics with honors from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College. Deciding to study law, he applied to and was accepted by the University of Idaho College of Law, which had the lowest tuition in the country. School officials did not realize he was Black, however, and according to Reginald, soon after required all law school applicants to supply a photograph. Reginald was the only Black student in the law school and remembers only one other Black student at the university. He was not invited to join a legal fraternity. Discrimination was nothing new for Reginald. At age 17 he was arrested for sitting on a city bus in a section reserved for whites. He was invited to join the law firm of Alvin Denman in Idaho Falls, but upon arrival in town, no hotel would give him a room nor would certain fraternal organizations allow him to attend meetings. He continued to experience discrimination, sometimes directly but more often subtlety, yet miraculously never became bitter. Dignified and elegant in personality and presence, his life was dedicated to service. University of Idaho 1950
As an attorney, Reginald annually donated over 180 hours of pro bono legal work for veterans. He served on many prominent commissions and councils, including the Idaho State Mental Health Advisory Council, Governor’s Child Support Enforcement Commission, and the Idaho Commission of the Art and Humanities. For 12 years he played clarinet in the Idaho Falls Symphony without compensation. His numerous awards and medals cannot all be listed, but include the national first place Nathan Burkan Memorial Award for an article on copyright law; three major military awards for public service, including one from the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Idaho State Bar Outstanding Service Award; University of Idaho Alumni Hall of Fame; and the American Red Cross Heroes Award. Reginald Reeves has long since retired from his office on Cambridge Avenue, but he is still giving. Sixty-eight years after our first meeting, he recently gave me the original stamp collection he showed me in 1953.

Traveling to Chamonix, France last year wasn’t feasible, so my family opted for a ski vacation closer to home in Colorado. Visiting Aspen can be an ideal way to spend your winter holiday, and you CAN do it ALL during a winter school break! As home to the world’s first world championships held outside of Europe, Aspen is renowned for its incredibly dreamy winter experiences and celebrity sightings. This year is even more special because @AspenSnowmass is celebrating 75 years of skiing, offering guests four world-class mountains to choose from: Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk. These mountains offer a wide variety of terrain perfect for everyone from beginner to expert and this year’s celebratory events include Luminescence in Snowmass, Winterskol in Aspen, XGames at Buttermilk and much more.
RUNWAY TO SLOPESIDE IN MINUTES Aspen is in the Roaring Fork Valley, southeast of Vail, and there are plenty of ways to reach the ski resort. Located just 5 minutes from Buttermilk (and 10 minutes from Snowmass and Aspen Mountain), the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport accommodates flights from major U.S. airports on United, Delta, and American Airlines. The most direct way of reaching the resort is driving I-70 west to CO 82 south through Glenwood Springs. Expect about a 3 1/2-4 hour drive. Other nearby airports include Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE), which is west of Vail and east of Glenwood Springs, while Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT) is about 125 miles east. Colorado’s largest airport, Denver International (DEN) is 220 miles east and north of the Aspen ski area. The Epic Mountain Express (formerly known as the Colorado Mountain Express) offers ground transfers from Aspen/Pitkin County Airport, Denver International Airport and Eagle County Regional Airport. Just download the Aspen Snowmass App and you’ll be able to see parking lot status. As a group of ten, we opted to stay in an Airbnb home for two weeks outside of Carbondale between Glenwood Springs and Aspen. We chose this location because within 35 minutes we were either on the slopes at Aspen Snowmass or Sunlight Ski Resort. With nearly 730 skiable acres and a 2,000 vertical foot drop, Sunlight offers big skiing at an affordable price. After a day on the slopes we spent the best après-ski fun at Glenwood Hot Springs Resort, the world’s largest mineral hot springs pool. CONTINUED >

TRANSPORTATION Because of our large family, we rented a Cadillac Escalade but riding the local Roaring Fork Transit buses was very convenient when we wanted to get on the slopes earlier than the group. These buses run the entirety of the Roaring Fork Valley and many (but not all) routes are free. Free routes include all City of Aspen and all Aspen to/from Snowmass Village. Seniors 65 and older and children 5 and under always ride free. The Village Shuttle within Snowmass Village is also free to ride. RFTA’s real time bus information is available in an easy-to-use mobile app called Transit.
WHERE TO STAY? When you’re looking for the perfect place to rest your head, you’ll find an amazing selection of great places to stay in the Roaring Fork Valley. Our Airbnb called “AspenWood” - located between Aspen and Glenwood Springs - was one of our faves. Located on the banks of the Roaring Fork River, this beautiful river compound was like our own resort without the crowds. With views of Roaring Fork River from the 8-person hot tub, a gourmet kitchen, two fireplaces, and plenty of room for everyone, we wished we could have stayed longer.

Aspen Snowmass offers a variety of season passes and participates in some of the industry’s best multi-destination ski passes including the Ikon Pass, Mountain Collective Pass, and Colorado Ski Country’s Gold Pass. If you need to rent skis or snowboards, Stapleton Ski, Up Snowboard Rentals, and Miller Sports are located in the heart of Aspen. Or reserve your equipment with Ski Butlers who deliver everything directly to your accommodations. Luckily for us, we discovered @Ragged MountainSports, a premier consignment store that offers a plethora of great gear. This shop is known for its friendly customer service if you quickly need to grab a thermal base layer or a helmet.

Creative Planning believes there’s a richer way to wealth. Their team of CFP professionals, CPAs and attorneys work together to create clear customized plans to maximize your wealth, all in one place. Their award-winning in-house services span a variety of financial d isciplines, i ncluding c omprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Founded in Overland Park, they have since branched out across the globe, gaining a national reputation that has earned them numerous prestigious awards, including #1 wealth management firm i n America by Barron’s, CNBC and Forbes. President and CEO Peter Mallouk shares his wealth of knowledge with approachable financial advice. Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver the all around experience. Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions.

“Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.” For more information, visit CreativePlanning.com.
