LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Fresh Start

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Greg Gewalt | greg.gewalt@lifestylepubs.com EDITOR

Kimber Patterson | kimber.patterson@lifestylepubs.com

Considering how busy our lives have become, the end of year is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where I have been, what the past year has taught me, what I want to grow and learn from, and where I want to go from here. A new year signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. As Publisher of the Meridian Lifestyle magazine, the end of the year is also an opportunity to take a fresh look at our community magazine. I want to thank you, the readers and our partners, who have shared your input and thoughts. Whether it’s stunning images or feature stories, my challenge is to bring you the best information about Meridian in a visually appealing format to enhance your busy lives. This year you’ll see newly designed feature layouts as well as an increased digital and social component to complement your reading experience. Here are three of our monthly sections that have been redesigned in order to serve you better. LOCAL EXPERIENCES: Introduced last summer, this section highlights local recommendations of the best places and things to do in our city. With the ease of a QR code to show you more selections, and an interactive map based on your location, you can immerse yourself in new things to do within the valley you call home. CITY SCENE: This news feed is where everyone can share their smartphone images of people, places and things happening around our city. We encourage our readers to tag @Meridian.Lifestyle and use hashtag #MeridianLifestyle to be featured in this special section. BUSINESS MONTHLY: This section is a roundup highlighting important news from our business community with the convenience of QR codes directing you to further information provided on our CityLifestyle.com website. This special January issue is dedicated to your health and wellness, including purposeful connections with the people we cherish, and being community focused and intentional about finding ways to help our fellow Meridian residents. My hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love.

"Parents should do all they can to help their kids build habits that privilege the world they actually live in, rather than the world of screens and social media."

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

WHAT ARE SOME CAUSES YOU CARE ABOUT?

I love the people I see every day at The Ambrose School, from the students to parents to teachers to administrators to staff. It’s a tight community and I’m grateful to be a part of it. I’m glad to get paid to read books and to talk about them with others who cherish them. It’s a good living.

My church’s Safe Families chapter, an organization that helps churches care for families and children in short-term crisis situations. My wife and I enjoy helping our neighbors close to home in ways that are unmediated by screens. I’m for face-toface neighborhood life and against social media. As a teacher, I see firsthand how damaging it is when our young people are drowning in the world that social media and endless screen proliferation creates. Parents should do all they can to help their kids build habits that privilege the world they actually live in, rather than the world of screens and social media.

WHAT’S YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? For a short, beautiful summary of the good life, I think it is hard to beat Ecclesiastes 3: “[God] has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God’s gift to man.”

OUTSIDE OF YOUR WORK, WHAT SKILLS OR TALENTS DO YOU HAVE THAT MIGHT SURPRISE PEOPLE? A few years ago, I started running and that’s been a refreshing challenge. I’m now in my first year as an assistant coach of our cross-country team. It is such an intense sport to watch. It requires great discipline. Watching the athletes finish their races well is quite moving to me.

WHO IS SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE, AND WHY? Eric Liddell is one of my heroes (Vangelis’s Chariots of Fire soundtrack has been a favorite since childhood--my parents had the soundtrack on vinyl). After the Olympics he was a missionary to China, and later died in a Japanese internment camp during World War II. Every account of the camp says that he ran his race with integrity until the end, looking out for others even as he was starving and suffering himself. Langdon Gilkey, who was with him in the camp but survived, said of Liddell: “It is rare indeed when someone has the good fortune to meet a saint. He came as close to it as anyone I have ever known.” I take Gilkey’s word for it!

Healthy Habits for t h e N e w Ye a r

4 Easy Ways to Make 2022 Your Best Year Ever Want to make this year different from the rest but don’t even know where to start? I’ve outlined simple ways you can make 2022 your healthiest. You don’t have to do them all on at once, either. Just start implementing one new habit a month, then start adding on when you feel the time is right for you. Keep it manageable and fun – that’s what life is all about! These four tips touch on different areas and aspects of our lives, yet they all play a huge role in our overall health. Other good habits include eating more whole foods and cutting down on sugar, creating a nightly routine to improve sleep, and moving your body on a daily basis. Tackling these areas can really improve our physical and mental health, and our ability to live a life to our fullest capacity. Cheers to a New Year and creating habits that set us up to feel and be our best! Follow McKenzie @SproutingVitality for recipes, nutrition tips, and more.”

1.

drink more water This is my #1 tip for living your healthiest year ever. Did you know increasing your hydration as little as 3% could result in a 50% increase in productivity? Drinking water helps you feel your best, move your best, and sleep your best. This one simple act to stay properly hydrated improves so much of your health. Keep a re-useable water bottle with you and set hydration timers on your phone to keep you on track.

declutter your space

make time for self-care

minimize screen time

We truly are affected by our surroundings. A cluttered space can create a cluttered mind. When our environment is out of order, we feel out of sorts. Decluttering has the ability to energize, release negative emotions, and create both physical and mental space. By decluttering your desk or your home, you take control of your environment and free yourself to be present and productive. Tidying is not just for esthetics; it is proven to lower stress, increase productivity and provide physical health benefits.

Creating a routine for self-care has been clinically proven to reduce anxiety, depression, and stress while improving energy and overall feelings of happiness. Self-care doesn’t have to be extravagant spa days or expensive presents to yourself. It can be drawing an Epsom salt bath in the evening, sipping a cup of tea in a quiet place, reading for pleasure, or having a set hour of alone time. The simple things that help us feel healthy are not a luxury - they are a necessity.

This might seem like a hard one, but we need to spend less time looking at screens and more time enjoying the real life that is happening all around us. Connect with friends and family and stop mindlessly scrolling and comparing yourself to others. Finding joy and gratitude in what’s right in front of you can really help increase self-confidence. Start taking notice of your screen time and create healthy boundaries around technology.

TALKIN’ NFL WITH MARIA PREKEGES

If you’re a sports fan, chances are good you’ve spotted Maria Prekeges on TV. She’s covered everything from rugby to rodeo for networks like ESPNU. Now, she’s turning her focus to the NFL with a new podcast. Boise Lifestyle got her away from the microphone for a few minutes to talk about the new venture.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START BEYOND THE LOCKER ROOM WITH MARIA? I always wanted to cover football. When the pandemic hit, I found myself out of work. I kept seeing openings for podcasters, and then one popped up I knew I had to get: a football podcaster for Bleav. It is a podcast, but I also put each episode on my YouTube channel. Find it on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.

WHAT CAN LISTENERS EXPECT? The first segment is all about what’s going on in the NFL for the week. I enlisted the help of my good friend Trevor Thomas, as he follows the NFL like nobody’s business. We have a ball discussing all things NFL past, present, and future. That section is T-Bone’s Take. Then I move to Beyond the Locker Room. That’s where I interview people on how football has affected their lives, from players (past and present), to coaches, fans, and more. I end the podcast with Maria’s Minute, where I get to talk about anything I want. I try to end on a positive note each week, as that’s how I try and always live my life: glass half full.

30

O UR TOWN | L IFE + CU LTURE

ANY SNEAK PEAKS INTO UPCOMING GUESTS? The guest list is filled with amazing people. I have some big goals, especially in the offseason where more current players and coaches will have more time. Let’s just say you will want to continue to listen, as you never know who might show up.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE SPORTS STORY? I love the memory of Sunday afternoons growing up. We’d crowd around the TV with my dad and watch football all day. That’s really how I got into the sport, and it was precious time with a father who worked a lot.

ANY SUPER BOWL PREDICTIONS? Ah, the old prediction game. It’s been such a strange season so far. There are always unexpected upsets, drama, and more. This year especially, there seemed to be frontrunners, but then the league got all turned around, so predicting who will be in Super Bowl LVI? That’s a tough one. I’ll say who I’d like to see. For the NFC, I’d love to see the Arizona Cardinals, although I think it might be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For the AFC, I’d love to see the Baltimore Ravens.

FAVORITE TEAM? It’s funny to say, but I really do just love watching the NFL, all teams. But let’s be honest, everyone does have a favorite. Growing up in Spokane, Washington, we always rooted for the Seattle Seahawks, and I continue to do so.

TREASURE VALLEY LEGEND MARK JOHNSON RETIRES FROM KTVB

42

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

JUST SAYIN’ MARK JOHNSON Mark Johnson has been gracing Treasure Valley television screens since the early 1980s. Now retired, the KTVB legend took time to reflect on three decades of memories and what’s next.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHTS? I’ll never forget getting the main anchor chair in 2004 and then being sent to Washington, D.C. to cover Dirk Kempthorne’s confirmation hearings as nominee for Secretary of the Interior. I remember doing live shots in front of the U.S. Capitol and the White House thinking, “Only four months ago I was in costume doing an imitation of Coach Dan Hawkins for the Halloween edition of Sports Extra, and now I’m in D.C. covering one of Idaho’s biggest news stories!” It’s been an amazing run: five Olympic trips, three Fiesta Bowls, three season-opening Boise State football games in D.C. and Atlanta, countless pre- and post-game shows, and so many other trips to cover news in Idaho.

WHAT WILL YOU MISS ABOUT THE JOB? It’s such a cliché, but I will miss my family at KTVB the most. They made it fun to come into work every day. I’m so proud and humbled to have been a part of that.

MOST MEMORABLE INTERVIEW? Muhammad Ali. He was in Boise promoting a boxing match and I interviewed him live in 1986.

He came from his hotel room seconds before we went on air and I noticed he had cut himself shaving. I opened with, “Champ, I believe you have more blood on your face right now than in your entire career!” He looked at me and said, “Who are you? The local Howard Cosell?!?” It was magical. I enjoyed interviews with Senator John McCain, Mitt Romney, Michael Jordan, and Wayne Gretzky, but Ali ranks as the biggest moment for me.

BEST CAREER ADVICE? I was told a long time ago to “be myself.” I’ve been fortunate to work with people who are the same off camera as on, and that’s something I always passed along to young journalists. It has gotten me into trouble on occasion, but I always worked to make sure I wasn’t trying to be anyone else but me on TV.

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO KEEP ACTIVE DURING RETIREMENT? I love to play golf. My wife and I got a pair of e-bikes and I want to spend long rides with her. We want to travel. We have two daughters in college, a new grandson in Seattle, and want to spend time with them, as well as the rest of our wonderful family. I’m looking forward to continuing my involvement with local nonprofits and all of the exciting things they are doing in the community. I’m also looking forward to trying my hand in new “adventures” -- whatever they might be! CONTINUED >

Enjoying retirement

ANY FUN ANECDOTES TO SHARE? The viral thing that happened to me was a kick and something I still don’t understand. (In 2021, an automated tweet accidentally went out from KTVB’s Twitter account with Johnson’s headshot and ‘Mark Johnson’ as the only text.) It was fun hearing from Jimmy Fallon, Ellen, and Stephen Colbert, who had a field day with it.

FINAL THOUGHTS? I am just so thankful to have had a career with absolutely no regrets. And one that has now allowed me to give attention to my wife who has been so supportive of every move I’ve made. I’m looking forward to returning the favor. I’m also thankful for the viewers who treated me like a friend whenever they met me. I always felt so welcomed and I won’t ever forget that.

SHINIER HAIR 3 T , R IE IPS H T L FOR HEA HOW TO KEEP WINTER LOCKS HEALTHY AND BEAUTIFUL

Whether you’re attending a party, family event, reentering the workplace, or just want to look your best, shiny tresses look good with every outfit and on every occasion. However, if your locks are looking a bit dull, don’t stress – it’s typical to need a refresh in winter, and it’s something you can resolve on your own. “Every head of hair needs a bit of TLC in winter,” says Jonathan Colombini, celebrity hairstylist. “The good news is that you don’t need to wait for your next salon appointment. This can also be achieved at home (SPM Wire).”

Enjoying a spa day at home falls directly under the category of “self-care,” so indulge yourself with Colombini’s top secrets for keeping your hair glossy and gorgeous on a daily basis. Don’t wait for a special occasion or for your next salon visit. With the right strategies, shiny hair can be an everyday indulgence.

HAIR

A hair-healthy diet can promote hair growth and shine. Be sure your diet includes vitamins and nutrients like iron, biotin, protein and vitamins A and C. Eat a wide range of whole fruits and vegetables and good-for-you sources of protein and iron, such as lentils, nuts and fish.

A toning gloss is suitable for all hair types and textures, including color-treated and natural hair. Glossing enhances color and tone, boosts shine and deeply conditions in one step. Distribute gloss through clean, damp hair all the way through the ends, leave on for 5-15 minutes, and rinse thoroughly with water.

While warm water works best for washing hair, you should always rinse with cold water. This is because cold water helps to seal the cuticles that were just opened to reflect light better and give your hair a healthy-looking shine.
