A WATCH TELLS YOUR STORY WITH STYLE AND PURPOSE

IT’S EASIER THAN EVER TO BUY GREAT WATCHES FOR MEN. There’s more information about watches in the form of thriving communities on the internet and Instagram such as The Idaho Watch Collective. In the age of smartwatches, there is near-universal acceptance of the idea that buying a traditional men’s watch is a smart choice—stylistically, financially, and spiritually. It’s for those reasons that buying a timepiece can feel harder than it’s ever been. How is one supposed to choose between a mechanical or a quartz? What counts as a good investment? For the beginner, it can often seem as if there’s too much information to make a smart call. We’re pleased to say - that’s not really the case. Yes, buying a fine watch can be a bit daunting—not only because you’re investing your hard-earned money, but because it takes time to understand what you like, and why you like it. Watches can be categorized two ways: dress and sports watches. Dress watches are typically slim in profile, made with the finest materials, and are usually outfitted with a leather strap. On the other hand, a sports watch often comes in steel with a matching steel bracelet, band of rubber, or fabric strap. The greatest variation comes within the sports watch category.

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED)

There is no greater dividing line in the world of watches than the one between quartz and mechanical movements. Mechanical watches are the apple of watch collectors’ eyes. The intricately made pieces rely on a series of wheels, gears, springs, and other mechanics to keep accurate time. Quartz pieces substitute almost all of that with a small crystal made of quartz, which manages to do the work of many different mechanical bits entirely on its own. Because of an abundance of the naturally occurring quartz crystal and the lack of expertise it takes to build a watch with one, these battery-powered watches are much more affordable. But serious collectors today prize mechanical watches for the same reason audiophiles keep buying vinyl, and fashion heads love handmade clothes—these watches take great skill to make, and there’s a real person behind each one rather than an assembly line. Choose a timepiece that works best for your lifestyle. If deciding between them is difficult, the solution is simple. Own one of each. Highlighting exclusive timepieces and new watches on the market, The Idaho Watch Collective is a social gathering space for connection with other like-minded luxury watch enthusiasts. LIVING LARGE TINY HOUSES STEP OUT OF THE SHADOWS AS PEOPLE OPEN UP TO NEW NOMADIC LIFESTYLE

Meridian Lifestyle | September 2021

THE IDEA OF “HOME” IS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE: SOME THINK SPENDING THEIR NIGHTS IN A TENT UNDER A SHEET OF STARS IS COMFORT ENOUGH, WHILE OTHERS NEED A BIG, MEDIEVAL CASTLE WITH HIDDEN DOORWAYS IN BOOKCASES TO FEEL AT HOME. These days, a popular decision is the tiny house. Many are downsizing their lives into a smaller space, and the idea of being able to bring home wherever you go is an intriguing thought to many. Laura, a nurse in Meridian, and her husband recently purchased a tiny house from Tiny Idahomes, a family-owned business in Emmett. Like all first-time homeowners, Laura had a bucket list such as butcher-block countertops and a full bathtub. Tiny Idahomes co-owner Anca Collinsworth says the company loves to try to check off their customers’ wish lists, such as a full kitchen or installing a cat door under the stairs for litter boxes. “Almost anything can be accommodated for a tiny house,” Anca says, “including bathroom vanities, fireplaces, staircase storage, and double beds for the kids.” Even with the redesigning of your lifestyle, home can be where your tiny house is.

INTERIOR Dark cabinets against white walls help this beautiful kitchen stand in its own spotlight. It’s accented with butcher-block countertops and rustic flooring to create a country sensation.

BATHROOM This tiny house was extended to fit a full-size bath tub, perfect for quiet, relaxing soaks. Built-in floor to ceiling storage handles linens and products. Large windows flood the room with natural light.

BEDROOM This Queen-sized bed is nestled on the ground floor. Two full windows accompany the sleeping area and a skylight gives an open feeling to make the space feel bigger than it is. Anyone lying on the bed gets a serene view when they wake up in the morning.

FIREPLACE This tiny house was designed to accompany a working fireplace. The gas-powered installment is surrounded by a rock veneer under a wall of wood and acts as a divider between the living room and the raised bedroom to the right.

pressure and strengthen your immune system. BACKGROUND Basic cosmetic dentistry doesn’t require specialized training, so any licensed dentist can advertise and provide those services. Still, a dentist with specialized training can help ensure you achieve optimum results. So ask providers about their continuing education and whether their team has specialized training. Also, make sure the dentist understands occlusion, or chewing function. Some cosmetic changes can affect your occlusion. So this is crucial to ensure changes to your teeth won’t pose a risk to your other teeth or the new work done to your teeth. Ask if the dentist is a member of The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), and preferably, accredited by it. Does the cosmetic dentist have before-and-after photos of patients he or she has treated? Pictures used in the practice’s advertising might be stock photos. So ask to see the dentist’s portfolio.

Also, investigate the dentist’s reputation. Check online reviews, but make sure they’re on a website that doesn’t allow providers to alter (remove) negative reviews. Coworkers, neighbors, family, and friends might also be able to make a good recommendation. TECHNOLOGY The specific technology necessary for treatment depends on the procedure. Still, even if a particular technology isn’t required, the availability of advanced technology may indicate how serious a cosmetic dentist is about providing patients the best results. Intraoral cameras, digital X-rays, dental lasers, and chairside monitors are just a few advanced technologies cosmetic dentists often have at their disposal. PREVIEW Ask about wax-ups, mock-ups, digital imaging, and smile previews. Cosmetic dentists use these tools to create a template to ensure patients achieve their desired results. S

EPTEMBER IS ONE OF OUR FAVORITE

TIMES OF THE YEAR. The blistering summer sun has calmed down, the nights are cooler, and the evenings are perfect for gathering around a fire pit with a glass of wine. In fact, let’s just plan an evening around the fire pit! Paella, a rice dish originally from Valencia, is a spicy one-pot meal cooked over such a fire. Many non-Spaniards think of it

“Our go-to wine for spice is the Rosé. Top picks: French Rosé from Bandol or Rhone; Spanish Garnacha, Tempranillo, or Beirzo Mencia; or Italian Ripasso.”

as Spain’s national dish, but Spaniards consider it

to be a dish from the Valencian region. In turn, Valencians regard paella as one of their identifying symbols. Paella is a rice dish that can have meat, fish, seafood, and vegetables and is characterized by its use of saffron to give it a yellow color and unique flavor. Valencian rice is simmered in sofrito, smoked paprika, piquillo peppers, and saffron. The meats can vary from shrimp, muscles, chicken, or rabbit, and then traditionally either green beans or peas are added. This is a wonderful dish to have simmering on the fire pit as your guests enjoy their favorite beverage. What wines to pair with this aromatic and spicy dish? Our go-to wine for spice is the Rosé. Top picks: French Rosé from Bandol or Rhone; Spanish Garnacha, Tempranillo, or Beirzo Mencia; or Italian Ripasso. Capsaicin, the molecule that gives chili peppers their fire, increases the sensitivity of our taste buds, so chilled wine seems colder than it actually is. Keep rosés only slightly chilled, serving them warmer than usual. Serve red wines with a slight chill to maximize their aromas and taste. Avoid beer or fizzy drinks because carbonation intensifies and prolongs the burning effect of capsaicin. If you like more heat in your Paella, keep the carbonated drinks to a minimum. Not a wine drinker? Infuse water with fresh sliced strawberries, peaches, and vanilla. Set the table in a simple, rustic setting to keep the attention on the fire pit. Invest in a good Paella pan. They’re easy to find and range from $30-60 depending on size. Spring for a bigger pan because Paella is a crowd pleaser! CityLifestyle.com/Meridian
