End-of-Summer Hurrah with the Kids & Pets AS SUMMER WINDS DOWN AND WE PREPARE FOR ANOTHER SCHOOL YEAR, WE OFFER SOME IDEAS ON HOW TO ENJOY SOME QUALITY TIME WITH YOUR KIDS AND PETS. This month Meridian Lifestyle has a new Local Experience section providing you ten places for kids to play outside, pet-friendly destinations, and where your family can spend the last hurrah of summer — Hint: ‘Kidfort’ is just around the corner. “Find a need and fill it,” is the motto of successful entrepreneurs and we are proud to feature three young people who are proving their leadership skills. Speaking of successful entrepreneurs, Jennifer Anderson, founder of the wildly popular Kids Eat In Color movement, provides inspiration for healthy kids lunches. Also this month, Natalie and Julie offer helpful hints for those of us who struggle with working from home, or being asked to redecorate the kid’s rooms every time a new trend or infatuation steals their attention.

Touch a Truck Event Delights Kids (and Kids at Heart) There's just something about seeing big machinery up close. Luckily, the Children's Museum of Idaho's 3rd Annual Touch A Truck event offered plenty to look at. Highlights included WinCo's big rig truck, Norco's tanker truck, and the Ada County Highway District's vac truck (which sucks up liquids, slurry, and sludge). It’s used for rollover recoveries and for towing tractor trailers. Its boom can lift 100,000 pounds. | 3. The Idaho Military Vehicle Preservation Association brought a 1990 Troop Carrier. It can carry 16 soldiers in the back and three in the front.

Concrete Concerns?
Don’t Let Waiting Cost You. by
We Offer a 3-Part Concrete Protection System:
PolyLevel™: Concrete Leveling • NexusPro: Crack Repair • SealantPro: Waterproofing Seal
CONCRETE RAISING & LEVELING
CRACK & JOINT REPAIR
SURFACE PROTECTION
PolyLevel™ is an environmentally friendly, strong high-density polyurethane foam that is injected underneath concrete slabs through tiny ports about the size of a dime. PolyLevel™ raises sunken areas and compacts the soil underneath. It cures quickly and will not degrade over time.
NexusPro is a silicone-based sealant for joints and cracks preventing water from flowing underneath the concrete slab. Specially formulated against harsh weather conditions, NexusPro resists UV rays: it won’t crack, bubble, or dry out. A single application can protect your concrete for years to come.
SealantPro is a state-of-the-art waterproofing seal that prevents water from seeping into the pores of concrete, permanently protecting it from water, dirt and other contaminants in a single coat. Once applied, SealantPro dries in minutes and is fully cured in just 6 hours.

A LOOK AT CLAIRE, JACOB AND ABBY— THREE UP AND COMING YOUNG LEADERS IN THE TREASURE VALLEY
CLAIRE BIGGIN Claire Biggin, age 12, can be found on most Saturdays in the summer at the Meridian Mainstreet Market selling baked goods and crafts from her business, Sprinkles of Joy. She’s often joined by her two younger brothers and her mom at her booth, but she does all of the preparation herself. She spends upwards of six hours each week in the kitchen baking and packaging her cookies, cakes and other items. She also makes crafts, her latest of which are flower pots and Idahome signs. Even though Claire only recently joined the Meridian community in March of 2020, she’s already giving back. She donates 10% of her profits to the Idaho Food Bank, a fact that is proudly written on her business card. Donating to local charities was something that started when, at age 6, she participated in Lemonade Day, a program aimed to help foster life skills, character, and entrepreneurship in kids. “They told us to set aside money for charity,” she said, “and my parents kept that going through other businesses. I feel like it’s the right thing to do.” Claire wants to expand her business by adding pancake mix and chili mix to her booth at the market, all while continuing to donate to local charities.

Young Leaders
JACOB BLACKBURN Jacob Blackburn, age 12, spends most of his Thursday afternoons in the summer washing garbage cans around his neighborhood. He uses a pressure washer, a long handle scrubbing tool, and dish soap to get the job done. He spends at least ten minutes on each garbage can he washes. He got the idea after seeing other kids in his neighborhood doing something similar. He goes door-to-door handing out fliers advertising his services. The fliers have his contact information, as well as before and after photos of the garbage cans he’s cleaned— proof of his ability to clean them effectively. “I think getting work is good for me,” he said, “it gets me outdoors, rather than watching TV or playing video games.” Jacob’s ultimate goal this summer is to save up for a dirt bike. Jacob’s parents agreed to pay for half of the $5,000 bike, which leaves Jacob to earn $2,500. With Jacob’s current price of $10 per garbage can, it will take cleaning nearly 250 cans for him to get his bike. After he reaches this goal, Jacob plans to save up for a cell phone. To do that, he’s going to partner with his brother and expand by adding lawn mowing to his service list next summer. CONTINUED >

ABBY REINHARDT When 15-year-old Abby Reinhardt isn’t doing extracurricular activities like student council, she designs, prints, and sells greeting cards, calendars, and other items on her Etsy shop, Daisy Jane Paper Co. Abby is a self-taught artist and learned through watching videos online. She makes beautiful designs and was encouraged to open up a business to sell her work. When COVID-19 hit, she found herself with some free time and decided to set up her shop. She got to work on not only designing her items on her iPad using the drawing app Procreate, but also on researching how to make her Etsy site appealing. She launched her shop in October of 2020 and has since made 36 sales. “I’ve learned a lot of valuable lessons from it,” she said, “like how to talk to customers and making sure I’m getting things done on time.” While she’s only partway through her time at Rocky Mountain High School, Abby is saving up the money from her business for college. She wants to attend BYU Provo. While she isn’t entirely sure what she wants to study yet, she’s considering graphic design among other majors. She plans to continue Daisy Jane Paper Co. at least until she graduates high school and possibly into college.

Baby to Teen Bedrooms 5 EASY ROOM UPDATES TO KEEP UP WITH YOUR KIDS
AS A MOM OF THREE AND AN INTERIOR DESIGNER, I CAN’T RESIST ENCAPSULATING EVERY MILESTONE OF THEIR CHILDHOOD IN DESIGN. This meant I was constantly re-doing their rooms for every new trend or infatuation that stole their attention for more than one minute. In short, I was exhausted! My mind and money resources had reached their limit. Now on my third go-round, I’ve learned how to keep things fun and fresh, as well as easily updated. My kiddo’s spaces can now easily adapt as they grow, expand, and develop their own sense of style. Here are five easy ways to help you transition your

STOR AGE Storage can be beautiful and practical. As your child starts collecting more toys and clothes good storage is essential in keeping you sane and teaching them good organizational skills. “A place for everything, and everything in its place” is both smart and soothing.

We all know that kids like to play and have fun, so why not make food fun? Whether you’re turning broccoli into a microphone at dinner, or playing tic-tac-toe with edible carrot sticks, kids get into it. DON’T GIVE UP Parents often assume that if a child doesn’t eat a food the first or second time it’s served, the child doesn’t like the food. Many children may

PARTING THOUGHTS
W o r k i n g At H o m e W i t h K i d s THIS SHOULD BE LOTS OF FUN.
THE PANDEMIC GAVE US SO MANY NEW DELIGHTFUL EXPERIENCES. Sneezing into masks. Cloroxing groceries. And for many of us...WORKING FROM HOME WITH CHILDREN. For about 5 minutes it sounded like fun. The thing about work is, you need to focus. You want to get it done, so you can actually, at some point…stop working. But if your children see you, then you’re on THEIR TIME. Even as I type this article, my 7-year-old daughter is next to me, telling me all about the books she’s supposed to be “reading quietly.” I’ll take a photo to prove it. My morning began like this….“Kids, I’m going on a zoom meeting for 45 minutes. Do your chores and then play outside. Do not disturb me for any reason unless you need to go to the hospital.” Seconds later a small head pops in the door asking for a Popsicle. Out of zoom frame, I give the look of death and mouth “GET. OUT.” In loud, urgent whispers, another voice cries, “Mom! Elise is supposed to fold all the towels, but she’s only folding kitchen towels!” A wail of protest breaks through my office door, “That’s not true! Collin is LYING!!!!” I mute the meeting and gracefully excuse myself. In the startlingly quiet death tone heard only from mothers, I explain, “If you don’t get the hell out of here, I will remove screen time for 5 weeks straight.” I’ve learned to work and focus faster with kids in my workplace. But I’ve never been more exhausted because when you WFH with kids, you never, EVER stop. Checking emails at 5:30am. Hiding in the pantry finishing a report. Staying in the car in the garage to send texts. Just as those kids infiltrate your work time, your work time infiltrates your home time. Now let’s add on the guilt. The guilt is what’s allowing my daughter to lay here and “read quietly” while I’m on deadline because we feel guilty working in their space. And because they really do just want to be near us. And they want permission for popsicles. HERE ARE SANITY TIPS: 01 Focus on what you actually produce, not the time it takes to do it. | 02 Get up early, before everybody starts asking for pancakes. | 03 Tell the kids a specific time you’ll spend with them, and stick to it. | 04 Admit you’re WFH with kids, and expect your coworkers to accommodate. | 05 Find your comfort in mini-moments. Stock up on caffeine, ear-plugs and take baths daily. Not to relax per se, but the ARTICLE NATALIE PLUMMER
