Does Your Living Space Need An Update? THIS MONTH IS THE PERFECT TIME TO SHOP FOR HOMES OR BEGIN A RENOVATION PROJECT THAT YOU’VE HAD ON YOUR MIND FOR A WHILE. Buying a home is one of the most coveted aspects of the “American Dream.” This year, as the Treasure Valley housing market is seeing unprecedented growth due to historically low interest rates, many are looking to purchase, sell, or refinance. This month we take a look at how our communities are working with developers who leverage existing infrastructure, as well as preserve open space, as part of responsible development to meet the increased housing demands.

MERIDIAN POLICE ENCOURAGE BIKE REGISTRATION As the weather warms up, bike trails become more enticing. However, the Meridian Police Department Crime Prevention Unit is encouraging an extra step before you hop on your twowheeler: registration. According to a release from the department, registration with the nonprofit Bike Index is free, and could increase your chances of getting your bike back if it's lost or stolen. To register, visit bikeindex.org and put in your relevant information. If your bike goes missing, alert the community to look out for it, and you'll hopefully get it back quickly.

TRACY BASTERRECHEA, MERIDIAN’S NEW CHIEF OF POLICE January 26th, Tracy Basterrechea was sworn in as the city’s 15th Chief of Police. Basterrechea recalls in a recent Meridian Lifestyle feature, “My brother was a police officer and had been for some time and he advised me to get a degree in education regardless of whether I went into law enforcement.” The newly sworn-in chief has worked his way to the top over the past 24 years -- first joining the force as a patrol officer.

RENOVATE & REFINE (CONTINUED)

Now let’s talk about a few luxuries that are always a nice way to start off the new year. New bedding is first on the list. There is nothing like a fresh pair of sheets. They are so welcoming and will assist in a good night’s rest. Look for breathable cotton or linen blends. As the nights start to get warmer you will be more comfortable in a cool fresh bed. The last thing on my list for a spring makeover are a few new throw pillows and possibly a new area rug. I try to change out my sofa throw pillows seasonally. My secret is to buy the same size covers so I can easily change them out and store my extras folded up in my linen closet. This way I can have multiple looks but not take up a huge amount of space. By just changing out a few pillows and rug you can get a whole new look without breaking the bank. I hope these tips inspired you to give your home a quick and easy spring makeover. Cheers to spring and be sure to follow me on CityLifestyle.com!

What is less obvious are the multiple pressure points making it very difficult to fulfill that demand while keeping home prices affordable for all Idahoans, whether they have lived here for decades or moved here recently.

In addition to demand, there are three other issues applying pressure on new

lumber prices. Within two months of the pandemic hitting the U.S, lumber prices nearly doubled thanks to tariffs on lumber from Canada and workforce reductions at U.S.-based lumber mills due to illness. Prices came down through August but have climbed back to near-record level in recent months. In addition to lumber, shortages created by COVID-19 include appliances, windows, and lighting fixtures. sure on home prices is infrastructure. The cities and counties of the Treasure Valley are experiencing very real growing pains as roads and highways, utilities, emergency services, and other services essential to our community struggle to keep up. Residential developers and builders are expected to extend this infra-

structure, which they are willing to do (within the state’s laws) to ease the pressure of demand. However, infrastructure costs ultimately impact home prices just as increased costs for other manufactured products bump their price to the consumer. Related to infrastructure is the movement by some counties and cities toward greater population density. This is being done to better leverage existing infrastructure as well as preserve open space, both attractive end goals and part of responsible development of our community. County and city zoning codes are being reviewed and adjusted with these responsibilities in mind, and this will take time. In

the meantime, some residential developments are being delayed or rejected. Due to the pandemic, the immediate demand for new and existing homes is for less density, which most of the rejected or delayed developments address. Many people moving into the valley are getting away from more densely populated areas to escape the effects of the pandemic. So, given the above, not only is there a shortage of new and existing homes for sale, but there is also a shortage of land on which to build new homes. In 2021 and beyond it is crucial that all parties providing affordable homes in responsibly developed neighborhoods work together. This will ensure the homes are delivered in a timely manner while being of good quality. The more these parties know and understand about the challenges faced by the others, the more likely they will be to create balanced solutions that address those challenges. FINDING THE PERFECT HOME CLOSE TO BOISE FOR YOU AND YOUR HORSES WITH IDAHO’S AGRICULTURAL ROOTS, EQUESTRIAN LIFE IS NATURALLY A BIG PART OF THE GEM STATE’S CULTURE. The city of Meridian is surrounded by agricultural lands to the west and mountains to the northeast, which makes it a perfect place to call home for many families with horses and other large animals. More so, the city is only a few miles away from Boise. Meridian is also close to the city of Nampa, which is a growing hub for economic activities around the area.

Meridian Lifestyle | March 2021

The 110-acre Ford Idaho Horse Park in Nampa has blossomed into the Northwest’s leading horse facility hosting a variety of events each year including NCHA, NRCHA, NRHA and Arabian championship shows. In July of each year, the Snake River Stampede Rodeo brings cowboys and cowgirls from all over the US and Canada to compete for top PRCA prize money. According to agent Casey Clark, finding the perfect home for you and your horses is especially easy in Meridian and surrounding areas. Residents have the advantage of living on acreage with their horses, enjoying the benefits of a rural community while having the convenience of being only minutes to Boise for everything the capitol has to offer. CULINARY CREATIONS

t he good ness of spr i n g ARTICLE MCKENZIE JOYNER PHOTOGRAPHY ANNA LEE PHOTOGRAPHY

Hi! I’m McKenzie and I’m so excited to share three of my favorite spring recipes with you! We leave the months of winter and heavier food behind us and welcome in the fresh, light foods that grow abundantly in spring. Crisp peas, long asparagus, crunchy radishes, fresh greens, all nourishing foods that hold so much goodness and radiate vibrant colors. Starting to implement these lighter, brighter foods back into our meals is like a breath of fresh air. Allow these foods to fill your plate and fuel your body with nutrients and energy. The recipes I’ve prepared are chock-full of nutrient-dense and delicious ingredients that will have you feeling your best. I practice seasonal eating, which is eating produce that is naturally in season. Seasonal eating allows you to source your food locally, which gives you the opportunity to eat food quickly after harvesting. This means you are ingesting the produce at the height of its nutritional value instead of days or weeks after harvest, which is the case for most foods at the grocery store. If you haven’t found a local farm near you to support, I highly encourage you to find one today. It will change what you put on your plate, the way you feel, and how you live your life! Follow me on CityLifestyle.com for more recipes and where I share simple and realistic holistic health tips... Now, let’s get to the good stuff!
