year, obviously, everything has come to a screeching halt.
The annual event has been delighting and benefitting the Treasure Valley for 37 years. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the popular holiday tradition is moving online, spanning from November 19 to November 30. “We want to capture the essence of light and goodness in a virtual event,” Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center Foundation Officer Nancee Bakken said. “Going virtual really opens up our reach, even to those who are not located in the Treasure Valley.”
The entertainers, the live performers, we just didn’t have a way to engage their talents.” While performances aren’t part of this year’s Festival, Santa has a WiFi connection and no waiting time. “People can sign up for a specific date and time for a customized Zoom experience with Santa,” Bakken said. Santa, the trees, and the wreaths will all take up residence in the former Gordmans at The Village at Meridian. “They’ve donated the space, which is really nice,” Aldape

“We want the Festival to be creative, and everyone’s creativity is what makes it unique,” Bakken said. “We have never been able to pull off the Festival of Trees without the community.” Bakken said while some longtime donors weren’t comfortable decorating a tree as a team, they’re still supporting the 2020 Festival financially. “It’s been really humbling,” Aldape said. “Before we even knew how we would recognize the sponsorship and levels, people were calling and saying, ‘Oh, sign us up, whatever you do.’” Since its inception, the Festival has raised more than $12 million. Different projects are chosen each year for the funds. Bakken said last year’s record-breaking fundraising allowed the Foundation to replace Saint Alphonsus’ mobile mammography unit. This year, with the pandemic, the fundraising choice was obvious. “(The pandemic) has underscored the mission of the Foundation,” Aldape said. “Our goal is to share the essence of the Festival of Trees in a virtual environment and raise as much from the community as we can for our COVID relief fund.” That collective fund supports projects involving healthcare worker relief and resiliency, clinical education, and new patient access innovations, such as telehealth. “We’ve had people reaching out to say, ‘What can we do to support you?’ I feel lucky to be able to connect those who want to support to those in need of support,” Bakken said. While Festival sponsorship levels vary, Aldape and Bakken were both excited about a new level: The Giving Tree. You can

i n g re d ient s + 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cubed + 1/2 cup fresh sage, thinly sliced + 1/4 cup granulated sugar + 1/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed + 1 large egg + 1/2 cup sweet potato + 1 cup Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free Flour (Blue Package) + 1/2 teaspoon baking soda + 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon + 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger + 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves + 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg + 1/2 teaspoon sea salt + Confectioner’s Sugar for dusting
i n st r uc t ion s In a light colored saucepan (this helps you see the butter as the color changes), melt your cubed butter over medium heat & add your sage. Swirl the pan so the butter cooks evenly and doesn’t burn. The butter will begin to foam after about 30 seconds, keep stirring constantly as it begins to brown. Keep an eye on the color of the butter as you are looking for a golden brown hue. Once you see that, remove from heat, strain out the sage and pour butter into a heat proof container. Set this aside until it cools and becomes solidified again. You can put in the refrigerator to speed up the process. You will use the sage butter at room temperature. Prepare the dough: In a bowl, combine the Gluten-Free Flour, Baking Soda, Cinnamon, Ginger, Cloves and Salt. Gently whisk together. In the bowl of a stand mixer or with a hand mixer, cream the sage butter with the sugars until light and fluffy. Add the egg and sweet potato or pumpkin puree and beat until combined. Add the dry ingredients and slowly mix until combined. Form 1 Tablespoon-sized balls and place 2” apart on your parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for about 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from oven and cool on wire racks. Lightly dust cookies with confectioner’s sugar. Store in an airtight container. FEELING STRESS AT SOME POINT DURING THE DAY IS INEVITABLE FOR MOST OF US - WHETHER IT’S TOO MANY COMMITMENTS ON YOUR CAL-
INCREASED SHOULDER AND BACK PAIN ARE THE NATURAL CONSEQUENCES OF TENSE MUSCLES DUE TO STRESS
ENDAR, TOO MANY EMAILS IN YOUR INBOX, TOO MANY CHORES AT HOME, OR AN UNEXPECTED CRISIS, ILLNESS OR INJURY.
S T R E TC H I N G FOR STRESS According to Harvard Health Publishing, stress in your muscles manifests as tightness — and when you relax those muscles, you can tap into your body’s ability to release mental stress. Stretching promotes increased mobility and flexibility, prevents injury and can ease or eliminate the pains that go hand-in-hand with an aging body. When performing your own stretch routine, the recommendation is to hold each position for 15 to 30 seconds along with five slow and controlled breaths; repeat each two to four times, per guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine. Stretching, however, works even better when it’s assisted. Trained “flexologists” employ a “push & release” type of stretching (technically “proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching,” or PNF) where you will be resisting a bit at times during the stretch and then releasing, resulting in a more effective stretch. To learn more about one-on-one assisted stretching, StretchLab has a location in Boise and Eagle: boise@stretchlab.com 36

THE HOUSE TODAY IS A CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY AND HISTORICAL EXHIBITIONS, TOURS, PERFORMANCES, TALKS, RESIDENCIES, AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
AFTER BEING CLOSED FOR NEARLY SEVEN MONTHS DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC, THE JAMES CASTLE HOUSE REOPENS WITH SAFETY PROTOCOLS AND WELCOMES VISITORS IN A LIMITED CAPACITY.
JA M E S CASTLE HOUSE
Visitors to the home of American artist James Castle
are welcomed in groups of no more than five, and by appointment only.
NEW RESIDENT KAILEY BARTHEL
Entry is free and visitors can enjoy Castle’s home, historic shed, gallery space and the General Store by making reservations online starting at 12:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The James Castle House welcomes visual artist Kailey Barthel to Boise from Baltimore, Maryland. Selected after a nationwide call, Barthel started her 10-week residency program on September 2nd. She has created a new exhibit inspired by her immersion in the world and home of James Castle. The exhibit will end on November 11, 2020. Barthel is a contemporary artist. Through painting, drawing and printmaking, she explores our relationship to homes and interior domestic spaces, investigating the ways in which places we associate with safety and familiarity can be made to feel unsettling or uncanny. During her residency, Barthel will be using a variety of painting and printmaking techniques to explore the tension between the strangeness and familiarity of disrupted domestic spaces. Taking inspiration from the James Castle House and its surrounding environments, she hopes to capture the lingering traces of lived experiences in these spaces. From December 4th through the 14th, the James Castle House will be hosting artist, Khara Oxier-Mori, an Idaho based self-taught artist concentrating on the human body. THAT’S A WRAP

LIKE MOST THINGS IN LIFE, PRESENTATION IS KEY. Of course gift wrapping falls under this rule. Here's our 6-step life hack to wrapping like a professional. So say goodbye to amateur presents plagued with gift wrap gap or crumpled corners, and say hello to perfection.
Cut enough paper to fit your pack-
[01] age. A great cheat is to use gridded wrapping paper. Double-sided tape is one trick to
[02] make our packages have a seamless elegance.
03
04
Tucking under edges and creas-
[03] ing firmly gives your package a nice sharp edge and polished look. Folding in the sides is an important
[04] step that takes a minute to finesse— don't rush this. Hug the paper so it's snug to the box, and make a sharp crease. Use the double-sided tape to make everything lay nice and flat. Once your sides are in place, it's
[05] time to cut your ribbon. We keep it simple here, too - no bows or frills - just a flat angled edge, taped down. Just where the ribbon edges meet
05
06
[06] we add a sticker to complete the package. If you're wrapping at home, consider finding some fun stickers to add a little whimsey to your gift wrapping.
[ PRO TIP ] Putting your gift in a box can help give you a firm work space for wrapping gifts and will avoid lumpy packages. Use sharp scissors and double-sided tape to achieve the clean look. Also, as we learned, it's all about the creases. CityLifestyle.com/Meridian

HOLIDAY MARKETPLACE
FROM PARKING LOT POP-UPS TO ONLINE SHOPPING, TREASURE VALLEY BUSINESSES ARE REIMAGINING “THE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE” FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON. For many shoppers, the transient nature of virtual impulse buys can never replace the aisle-browsing of brick-and-mortar destinations. While we hear of market events cancelling across the nation, Handmade Idaho Holiday Market is bucking the trend and opening a storefront in The Village at Meridian. Handmade Idaho was started by Angela Stewart, a Boise resident and owner of the Ladybug Press. The Market debuted in 2019 and this year “We had to cancel our annual holiday event which strives to bring opportunities for Idaho artists and makers to sell their products,” Stewart explains. To Stewart, cancelling this event was not an option, and she set out to try to find options that would allow artists to safely accommodate shoppers. While some merchants would feel the need to scale back, Stewart decided to take a risk and rent an empty space for a month at The Village. Stewart believes that shoppers this year will be moving back to more traditional gifts to create more meaningful memories as holiday get-togethers are impacted by the pandemic. For those of us who yearn for a normal semblance of a traditional shopping outing, this is very good news! Shoppers can expect to find handmade goods from every genre including jewelry, hand screenprinted tea towels, bath and body products, handformed mugs, hand blown glasses, carved wooden spoons, paper goods, handbags, knitted items and curated gift boxes. Handmade Idaho also has an online market and curbside pickup. Gift boxes can be shipped with personalized cards. Handmade Idaho’s holiday marketplace will open every day from November 27th - Christmas Eve. THE VILLAGE AT MERIDIAN 3693 E Longwing Ln #120, Meridian, ID 83642 For more information, visit HandMadeIdaho.com

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE BEST SKILLS THAT YOU BRING TO YOUR JOB? The ability to build relationships easily. I treat everyone as I would want to be treated, with honesty, integrity, and compassion. I grew up traveling the world and I’ve lived in many different countries and cultures which I believe have allowed me to build relationships. Customers can tell immediately if you are sincere about helping them. WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF SUCCESS FOR YOU, PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY? I have always defined success through my family, not by job title or income. Instilling integrity, character, honesty, empathy when working with anyone was important. Always helping others. Doing the right thing. My family is very close and at the end of the day, they know - and have been raised in - a supporting loving family that is always there for each other.
