We are grateful to work alongside remarkable women who share knowledge, support one another, and strengthen our community every day. Together, we celebrate the people who inspire us and the homes and futures we help create.

Women Who Shape Mercer Island
Dear Mercer Island Community,
May is one of our favorite issues of the year—a chance to celebrate the incredible women who help make Mercer Island such a special place to live, work, and connect.
Across our Island, women are doing more than contributing—they’re building. They are leading businesses, supporting nonprofits, creating art, and opening spaces where people feel welcome. They are connectors, mentors, and leaders who bring energy, care, and purpose to everything they do.
Simply put—Mercer Island women mean business.

But what stands out most isn’t just what they build—it’s how they build it. With intention. With heart. And with a deep commitment to community.
This issue highlights women who are strengthening Mercer Island through philanthropy, business, art, hospitality, and everyday acts of leadership. Their stories are a reminder that a thriving community doesn’t happen by accident—it’s created by people who choose to show up and invest in others.
May also brings Mother’s Day, which gives us another moment to pause and reflect.
To all the mothers, grandmothers, and maternal figures in our lives—thank you. Your love, guidance, and strength shape not only your families, but the broader community around you. So much of what makes Mercer Island feel like home starts with you.
This issue is really about appreciation.
Appreciation for the women leading with vision.
Appreciation for the women building connection.
And appreciation for the everyday moments of care that make this community stronger.
We are grateful to share these stories and to be part of a community that continues to inspire us.
With appreciation,

Retail & Fashion
Dana Smith brings style, creativity, and community spirit to Mercer Island through Hip Zephyr, a boutique known for its curated fashion and welcoming atmosphere.
Community Connection
For Dana Smith, Hip Zephyr is more than a boutique—it’s a place where women can feel confident, inspired, and connected. Serving the Mercer Island community through her shop allows Smith to help customers express their personal style while creating a space that feels warm, welcoming, and approachable.
Smith believes fashion should feel joyful and empowering. At Hip Zephyr, she focuses on curating clothing and accessories that help women feel comfortable, confident, and authentically themselves. Whether someone is looking for an everyday staple, a special event piece, or simply a moment of retail therapy, Smith and her team aim to make every visit feel personal and uplifting.
Opening Hip Zephyr was inspired by Smith’s love of fashion and her desire to create a boutique that feels both stylish and inclusive. She enjoys discovering new designers and thoughtfully selecting pieces that reflect both current trends and timeless style.
Looking ahead, Smith is excited to continue growing Hip Zephyr as a destination for Mercer Island shoppers— expanding collections, introducing new brands, and hosting events that bring the community together around fashion, creativity, and connection.

“Interior design is more than beautiful rooms—it’s about creating spaces that tell a story, support everyday living, and reflect the lives unfolding within them.”
Nadine Stellavato Brown
Nadine Stellavato Brown
Interior Designer, Studio Stellavato

For interior designer Nadine Stellavato Brown, the most rewarding part of her work is helping Mercer Island homeowners transform their houses into meaningful retreats. She is continually inspired by working with individuals and families who have built their lives here and want their homes to reflect that journey. Each project becomes an opportunity to thoughtfully layer materials, original art, and architectural influences in a way that feels deeply personal and intentional.
Brown’s path to interior design evolved naturally from a lifelong passion for visual storytelling. After more than three decades as a creative director and branding designer, she became fascinated with how principles like color, composition, and narrative could extend beyond two-dimensional design into the built environment. Interior design offered the perfect next chapter—creating spaces that not only look beautiful, but also express identity and emotion.
Looking ahead, Brown is focused on continuing to explore layered materials, nature-inspired palettes, and timeless architectural influences in her work. She is also placing greater emphasis on incorporating original artwork into interiors, sourcing pieces from auctions, galleries, and independent artists. For Brown, original art brings authenticity and emotional connection to a home—adding depth, individuality, and a sense of story to the spaces where people live their daily lives.
Sano Café is one of Brown’s favorite island stops—fresh, nourishing, and beautifully simple, whether she has time to pause or needs something quick between projects.

Niki Baklinski, Co-Owner Baklinski Home Improvement

“Improving homes is really about improving people’s lives. When a space works beautifully and someone feels cared for along the way, that’s where the magic happens.”
Niki Baklinski
For Niki Baklinski, serving the Mercer Island community is about more than improving homes—it’s about uplifting people. She finds joy in everyday interactions that leave someone feeling supported, encouraged, and better for the exchange. Whether helping a homeowner rethink a space or guiding them through a renovation, Baklinski approaches each project with the belief that thoughtful work and genuine care can strengthen a community one home at a time.
Her path into the profession was influenced early by her grandfather, a civil engineer who helped build the Channel Tunnel between England and France. A natural tinkerer with an inventive mindset, he was always improving and fixing things around the house. As a child, Baklinski often worked beside him—handing him tools and listening as he talked through ideas and solutions. That experience, combined with her own strengths in spatial thinking and functional analysis, shaped the way she approaches her work today.
Looking ahead, Baklinski is focused on deepening the company’s “WOW-level” culture at Baklinski Home Improvement. Her goal is to ensure every interaction— from team members and subcontractors to clients—feels thoughtful, respectful, and memorable.
Caulkins Landing holds special meaning for Baklinski. As a child, her grandmother took her swimming there every summer day—memories that still make the spot feel like home.
“Improving homes is really about improving people’s lives. When a space works beautifully and someone feels cared for along the way, that’s where the magic happens.”
“The most meaningful part of my work is the relationships built over time—supporting clients through multiple chapters of their lives and earning their trust again and again.” Michele Schuler
Michele Schuler
After more than twenty years selling real estate on Mercer Island, Michele Schuler says the most meaningful part of her work isn’t simply the homes—it’s the relationships built over time. Many of her clients return through multiple chapters of life, from first homes to growing families and new transitions. That continuity, she says, is what makes the work so rewarding. Being someone clients trust again and again is a privilege she never takes lightly.
Schuler was drawn to real estate because it blends several passions: strategy, design, and human connection. Each transaction requires thoughtful problem-solving, but also a deep understanding of the people behind the decisions. No two clients—or homes—are ever the same, and that variety continues to keep the work engaging after decades in the profession.
Looking ahead, Schuler’s focus is on thoughtful, intentional growth. She plans to expand her team while continuing to deepen long-standing client relationships and elevate the level of service she provides. Maintaining a refined, highly personalized experience remains central to her approach.
Favorite Mercer Island Spot
The Roanoke remains a longtime favorite—a true gathering place on the island. In the summer, the outdoor spaces fill with neighbors connecting and enjoying the relaxed spirit of Mercer Island.

“Helping someone find a home on Mercer Island means helping them find a life here. That sense of belonging is what makes this work meaningful.”
Sharon Singh
For this Mercer Island real estate professional, helping people find their place in the community is more than a career—it is deeply personal. Mercer Island is where she and her husband are raising their two sons, and that connection shapes how she serves every client. From sharing firsthand insights about schools, clubs, and neighborhood life to thoughtfully presenting a home at its best, she brings pride and genuine enthusiasm to every conversation.
Her path into real estate grew naturally from years of deep community involvement. As a stay-at-home mother, she served on the PTA board and later as President of the Mercer Island Orchestra Boosters, building relationships and supporting local families. When she decided to start a business of her own, the transition felt seamless. “My husband has always told me I’m a connector,” she says. “In real estate, I finally feel completely in my element.” Today, the care she invests in each client relationship reflects the same dedication she once poured into community leadership.
Recently recognized as a Top Performer at the Mercer Island branch of Realogics Sotheby’s International Realty, she is focused on expanding her professional network and bringing fresh insights back to clients across Mercer Island and the greater Seattle Eastside.
Her favorite place on Mercer Island? The home her family discovered at an open house twelve years ago—still the view that reminds her why helping others find theirs matters.
“Helping someone find a home on Mercer Island means helping them find a life here. That sense of belonging is what makes this work meaningful.”

Rachel Schindler
Managing Broker Re-Vesta Group Realogics Sotheby’s International Realty
For Rachel Schindler and Robyn Kimura Hsu, real estate on Mercer Island is about far more than transactions—it’s about relationships.
In a community as connected as Mercer Island, their work often places her alongside clients during some of life’s most meaningful transitions. Whether welcoming new families, supporting neighbors through change, or celebrating milestones, Rachel and Robyn value the trust that comes with being part of those moments.
Schindler was drawn to real estate for its unique intersection of people, lifestyle, and investment. A home is both deeply personal and one of the most important financial decisions a person can make. That duality continues to drive her—along with the ever-evolving nature of the market and the opportunity to deliver at a higher level for every client.
Looking ahead, Schindler and the RE-VESTA Group are focused on elevating the client experience—refining their approach, investing in the community, and remaining a strong, visible presence on Mercer Island.

Culture Creators Shaping Mercer Island
Leading with Purpose: Women Strengthening Our Community

A thriving community is never accidental. It is built—over time—by people who care deeply about the place they call home and who choose to invest their time, creativity, and leadership in making it stronger.
ARTICLE BY SHARON PEREZ | PHOTOGRAPHY BY J GARNER PHOTOGRAPHY, RON YEH
Mercer Island Community Fund Board of Directors Women
Entrepreneurship and creativity also shape the island’s cultural identity. Jody Elsom, founder of Elsom Cellars, has built a winery that blends craftsmanship, art, and philanthropy.
On Mercer Island, many of those community builders are women.
They lead nonprofits and businesses, create spaces where neighbors gather, support local artists and entrepreneurs, and work behind the scenes to strengthen the connections that make island life special. Their work may take different forms— from civic leadership to hospitality, the arts, and local commerce—but their shared impact is unmistakable.
Together, the women featured here represent the many ways leadership can show up in a community.
At the center of Mercer Island’s philanthropic efforts is the Mercer Island Community Fund, where dedicated board members work to support the health and resilience of local nonprofits and families. Through thoughtful stewardship and collaboration, they help ensure that critical programs—from youth services to community initiatives—continue to serve Islanders across generations.
Supporting the vitality of local businesses is another cornerstone of community life. Jen Dean, Executive Director of the Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce, works to strengthen the connections between businesses, residents, and civic leadership. Her role brings together entrepreneurs, local organizations, and community partners to foster a vibrant local economy and a sense of shared purpose.
Robin Farrish’s favorite work at Gallagher Co. is rooted in preserving the character of
Mercer Island—restoring and protecting its architecture so it endures for future generations. That same passion comes full circle with the Crawlspace Gastropub, where she and her husband Jason have brought their vision to life with Gallagher Co. building the space. It’s a rare and meaningful intersection where her worlds come together— always honoring the past while creating a place for the community to gather and make new memories.
Entrepreneurship and creativity also shape the island’s cultural identity. Jody Elsom, founder of Elsom Cellars, has built a winery that blends craftsmanship, art, and philanthropy. Through her work, wine becomes a medium for connection—supporting artists, nonprofits, and local causes while inviting people to gather and celebrate together.
The arts, in particular, have long been a powerful force for building community. Katarina Garner, co-owner of J. Garner Photography, captures the stories and moments that define Mercer Island life—from families and graduates to community celebrations and milestones. Her work preserves the visual history of the island while supporting the people who live here.
Similarly, Julie Hsieh, artist and founder of Yuan Ru Art Center, has created a space where creativity and culture flourish. Through exhibitions, workshops, and artistic collaboration, her gallery brings people together to experience art in ways that inspire conversation, reflection, and shared appreciation.

While their paths are different, these women share something essential: a belief that community is something we build together.
Their work reminds us that a strong town is not defined only by geography, but by relationships—by the places where people gather, the organizations that support those in need, and the individuals willing to lead with generosity and vision.
On Mercer Island, these women are doing just that.
And through their leadership, creativity, and commitment, they continue to shape a community that is vibrant, connected, and deeply rooted in the power of people coming together.

Katarina Garner, Co-Owner, J. Garner Photography
For Katarina Garner, photography is about more than capturing beautiful images—it’s about telling the stories of the community she calls home. As co-owner of J. Garner Photography, she works with businesses, families, and organizations across Mercer Island to create imagery that reflects the people and spirit of the Island.
Garner especially enjoys helping local entrepreneurs and professionals elevate their brands through thoughtful visual storytelling. From portraits to commercial photography, her work highlights the individuals and businesses that shape the Island’s character.
She and her husband Jim first built their photography career capturing meaningful moments between couples and young families. While their studio now focuses primarily on commercial photography, some of their favorite assignments remain those rooted in the Mercer Island community—documenting milestones, growth, and the relationships that define local life.
Looking ahead, Garner is passionate about projects that celebrate and empower women through photography, creating experiences that help women see and appreciate their own strength and beauty.
When she needs a quiet moment, her favorite Island stop is Island Books, a place she says always makes the day better.

Julie Hsieh Artist, Founder Yuan Ru Art Center
For Julie Hsieh, community is built through connection, creativity, and service. As the founder of Yuan Ru Art Center and a Mercer Island City Councilmember, she brings people together through both art and civic leadership. Hsieh’s path reflects a lifelong commitment to serving others. A former family physician, she now combines her passion for creativity with public service—creating opportunities for Islanders to connect through cultural experiences, artistic collaboration, and meaningful dialogue. At Yuan Ru Art Center, exhibitions and programs invite residents to explore art while building relationships across generations and cultures. In her role on City Council, Hsieh continues that work by helping shape initiatives that strengthen the community she calls home. Looking ahead, she is energized by the dynamic spirit of the Lunar Year of the Fire Horse—a time associated with momentum and action. She hopes to channel that energy into new creative collaborations and civic initiatives that make a lasting impact on Mercer Island. Favorite spots on MI include spending time with her family at Crawlspace Gastropub’s Kalua pork and Loco Moco; and Yuzen’s miso black cod, pork tonkatsu and salmon and avocado roll.

BECKY HILLYARD
From Side Hustle to Style Empire
The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”
She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s, she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?
A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Becky in Splendid x @CellaJaneBlog Spring 2026 Collection

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?
A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.
Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?
A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.
Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?
A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?
A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.
This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle Podcast.
“Trust is the only metric that actually compounds.”

Spring Floral Bowl
BRING THE BRIGHTNESS AND FRESHNESS OF SPRING INDOORS BY CREATING YOUR OWN FLORAL BOWL ARRANGEMENT.

Spring, come quickly! And if not, bring spring indoors anyway. Flowers brighten any room, any day of the year. No need to wait for a special occasion or holiday – give yourself permission to brighten everyday life with a bowl full of flowers. Place florals in an entryway, kitchen, living room space or even bathroom. Florals make any room come alive with pops of color and the smells of spring that’s just about ready to burst outside.
Consider this your personal invitation to play with flowers by creating your very own Floral Bowl Arrangement. Use any cereal bowl in the kitchen and a bundle of store bought flowers. For extra texture and depth, look for small spring branches and ornamental grasses found in your yard to pop into the arrangement, like I did here. Then, place your floral bowl in a place where you need that burst of joy most. Enjoy!
Supplies:
• 1 bundle of flowers (about 24 stems) + floral food packet
• spring branches & ornamental grasses found in your yard (optional)
• 6” bowl (cereal bowl size)
• floral shears (or garden clippers, kitchen shears, even craft scissors in a pinch)
• 12” square cut chicken wire
• wire cutters
• garden gloves to protect your hands when forming chicken wire
• clear floral tape (scotch tape will also do)
• lazy susan to easily move your arrangement and work from all sides (optional)
Preparation & Assembly:

• First prepare the mechanics. The mechanics are the non-floral elements used to assemble a floral arrangement. These materials will act as a grid in which the flowers are built into to hold each stem in its place.
• Wearing garden gloves, cut chicken wire roughly into a 12” square. Loosely form the chicken wire into a ball and place inside the bowl.
• Use clear floral tape to make an X shape over the top of the bowl to hold the chicken wire securely into place. This will also give extra support when adding the floral elements later.
• Fill the bowl with water and mix in a flower food packet, if your flowers came with one.
• Begin to arrange floral elements into the bowl. As a general rule, you will want to start with the strongest, thickest stems and end with the most delicate stems. Here, I began with branches, then the largest base flowers followed by taller focal flowers, and finally delicate stems, grasses and wispy greens.

GARDEN TO GLASS
DIY COCKTAILS WITH FRESH HERBS
Nothing says spring like the aroma of fresh-cut herbs in a crisp, cold, cocktail. With warmer weather finally here, growing herbs at home can transform your cocktail hour and add a fresh kick to your springtime favorites.
Growing herbs is incredibly easy and can be done in a variety of ways—from a container in a window, to a planter box in the yard. With a container or garden full of fresh herbs, you will be ready to take your cocktails up a notch.
Basil is a bright herb that is easy to grow and perfect for cocktails. Make sure to harvest immediately before mixing drinks and take leaves from the top to ensure a continual harvest. Fresh muddled basil leaves lend a crispness to the Gin Basil Cucumber cocktail.
Sage is easy to grow and does well in containers. The leaves add an earthy freshness to a refreshing cherry-infused Bourbon.
Mint is also easy to grow, but give it lots of room, as it likes to spread out and is virtually indestructible in the garden. Mint is a versatile herb but is especially lovely in the Rhubarb Mint Mojito.
Try recreating these refreshing cocktails with herbs grown at home and take your cocktail game to new heights!
