LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy New Year Friends! As we step into a new year—and begin Year Three of Mercer Island City Lifestyle—I’m reflecting on what it truly means to live well on this remarkable island we call home. Health and wellness are so much more than resolutions, routines, or self-improvement checklists. They’re about the whole person and the whole community: how we move, how we rest, how we connect, and how we show up for one another. This month, we explore wellness in its broadest, most meaningful sense—mind, body, and community. We spotlight Islanders who are helping us build healthier lives, from practitioners focusing on mental and emotional well-being to small business owners who create the spaces where we gather, laugh, learn, and feel at home. On Mercer Island, our wellness is woven into the relationships we nurture and the places we choose to invest our time. Whether it’s a stroll through our parks, a favorite class at a local studio, or the familiar welcome at our neighborhood shops, these everyday experiences strengthen our collective health. As we kick off 2026, I’m filled with gratitude for this community and the businesses, organizations, and families who make it vibrant, resilient, and deeply connected. Thank you for welcoming this magazine into your homes and allowing us to continue telling the stories that uplift and unite us. Here’s to a year of balance, belonging, and well-being—together. Raising Teens: Finding Balance and Connection I’ve been a parent on Mercer Island for almost 18 years. Our community thrives because of the deep commitment so many families have to raising supported, successful kids. When my boys were little, many sweet, well-intentioned people warned me about the dreaded teenage years. As I struggled to get a squirming toddler into their car seat, they’d say “Just wait until they’re teens, that’s when it gets really hard!”. I would smile and nod, but something in me resisted the idea that adolescence was to be feared. Parenting teens is not exactly harder, but it is more complex. The risks feel bigger, the choices more permanent, and the letting go can be experienced as grief. This is a stage where I’ve doubted myself and worried, but also watched my boys come into themselves in ways I never could have predicted. It’s amazing to witness.
UNDERSTANDING THE ADOLESCENT BRAIN
When our kids went back to post-shutdown, in-person learning, I chose to get a master’s degree to become a therapist. This was a lifelong dream, and incredibly, the stars aligned to make it happen. I entered grad school wanting to work with teens and their families. I viewed adolescence as a crucial turning point in our lives, when a little extra support can make a big impact. Studying human development and brain research enriched my understanding of what happens during this stage. The adolescent brain goes through a major transformation. In childhood, the brain focuses on absorbing information. Adolescence sparks a process of refinement. Teens take the knowledge and
14

experiences gathered throughout childhood and begin shaping who they want to become. It has often been described as a kind of pruning, letting go of branches that are no longer serving them and redirecting energy to what matters most. This pruning is not a malfunction; it is a sign of growth. This massive neurological task can leave teens exhausted and unsure of themselves. Anyone who is feeling depleted is more prone to emotional or behavioral swings. Compassion and patience from the adults in their lives can soften this process, helping teens feel understood rather than overwhelmed.
ALL BEHAVIOR MAKES SENSE
The teenage years present us with new, almost existential challenges. A transfer of responsibilities is happening, and the steps taken during the high school years can feel enormously consequential. As parents, when we are stressed, we often return to familiar approaches. We might double down on rules, invent new guidelines, or step back entirely. When teenage behavior feels confusing or even frightening, rigidity or surrender can feel like the only options. Yet the truth is, all behavior makes sense in context. I learned this early on when our youngest, at almost three years old, put about 14 different household substances into our bathroom sink. Ketchup, cotton balls, toothpaste, dish soap, and more. He simply wanted to know what would happen. That moment taught me something I now share with every parent. Behavior is communication, often revealing a need.

5 Quick Tips: 1. Listen more, talk less. 2. Show interest in their Play!
When we can pause and get curious about our teens’ experience, we open a door to connection. In a calm moment, asking open-ended questions that seek more than a yes-or-no response might let us in so we can better understand what is happening beneath the surface. From there, we can work alongside our teens, support them more intentionally, build trust, and offer skills they need for adulthood.
COLLABORATION OVER CONTROL
Dr. Ross Greene, founder of Collaborative and Proactive Solutions, states firmly, “Kids do well if they can. If they can’t, we need to figure out what’s getting in their way.” In this model of therapy, collaboration between youth and caregivers is essential, and often appreciated by teens. The process begins by identifying a problem and exploring the underlying issues, such as executive functioning challenges, difficulties with peers or a particular class. Next, we seek to understand the child’s experience and the expectations that feel mismatched or overwhelming, offering sincere empathy. Once understanding is in place, we turn to the adults’ concerns and the reasons a particular expectation matters. Working collaboratively, we brainstorm and apply possible solutions. This approach supports the whole family and can bring hope in a time when everyone feels maxed out. Collaboration does not eliminate limits. Instead, it reframes them as shared agreements that respect both the teen and the adults, shifting the energy from conflict to partnership.
CONNECTION IS THE FOUNDATION
Raising teens is not simple. It can leave us exhausted with worry, unsure of where to turn. Seeking support shows courage and care. Our city has many resources, including school counselors through Mercer Island Youth and Family Services and therapists like me. With most of my teen clients, what they benefit from the most is feeling heard, believed, and celebrated for who they are.

We are mirrors for our children. They look to us to see themselves. Let’s reflect their worth, their strengths, and our belief that they can handle what life brings. When we stay curious and compassionate, the teen years can become some of the most meaningful years we share with them.
5 QUICK TIPS:
1. Listen more, talk less. Teens can teach us a lot if we allow them to. 2. Show interest in their interests. Discover why they love what they love. 3. Keep limits in place. Kind, consistent limits support safety and room to learn from mistakes. 4. It takes a village. If you don’t have a support system, consider finding or building one. 5. Play! Let them choose the activity and give your undivided attention. Bonus Tip: Repair. Apologizing and taking accountability is one of the strongest ways to reconnect. It models maturity, respect, and love. Paulette Denman is a licensed marriage and family therapist associate. THE CRAWLSPACE GASTROPUB TAKES TOP HONORS
Best New Restaurant & Best Korean Restaurant in the PNW 20
on F
When Jason Farrish opened The Crawlspace Gastropub, he wanted to create something that felt both deeply personal and wildly inviting, a place where bold Korean flavors met the comfort of a neighborhood gathering spot. Less than a year later, that vision has translated into major recognition: The Seattle Times named The Crawlspace both Best New Restaurant and Best Korean Restaurant in the 2025 Best in the PNW Awards. For chef and owner Jason Farrish, the recognition is more than a win for his team. “It feels like a Mercer Island accomplishment,” he says. “Our community made this possible.” To Farrish, the accolades still feel surreal. “It’s a moment of gratitude,” he shares. “These awards tell us that people connect with what we’re creating — the food, the hospitality, the atmosphere. It means everything.” From day one, Farrish opened The Crawlspace with a clear vision: introduce Korean flavors in a way that felt approachable, comforting, and unmistakably American in presentation. “Korean food outside of beer and soju hasn’t always been shown in a super mainstream

way,” he explains. “I wanted pub food, comfort food — pan-Pacific, pan-Asian — but with an American experience wrapped around it.” The result is a menu rooted in Korean technique and spirit, with nods to Hawaiian influence, all supported by Farrish’s own upbringing in the restaurant world. “We ate whatever tasted good. No pretense. Just be yourself, relax, enjoy great food and great drinks.” The restaurant quickly earned not only critical praise but a loyal community following across Mercer Island and the Eastside. As for what’s ahead? New collaborations with local chefs, seasonal menu expansions, and more immersive culinary events, always with a spirit of curiosity. “These awards are encouragement,” he says. “They push us to
keep evolving, innovating, and honoring the flavors that brought us here.” Farrish is already designing and testing monthly menu specials, wine and spirits pairing dinners with producers, and new dishes such as a Blackened Rockfish Sandwich. Catering has become a significant demand, from large-format takeout to private in-home chef dinners. A fully enclosed patio allows for year-round dining, and Jason’s wife and business partner, Robin, will continue to bring her festive decorating magic to delight guests. For Mercer Island diners, The Crawlspace is more than a restaurant making headlines, it’s a new culinary anchor in the neighborhood, one that celebrates culture, community, and the joy of good food made with heart.

BUILDING HEALTHIER HEAR FROM NASM-CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER ABOUT ESTABLISHING THE BEST HABITS ARTICLE BY KRISTIN BURNELL
The new year is a classic kickoff to start fresh and build many resolutions that we all hope stick around. How many times do your resolutions fall through each year? It can be challenging to build new habits and switch up routines if you’re looking for a change. That’s why we rounded up the best advice to establishing habits and making them stay for good. We spoke with Danielle Johnston, National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)-certified personal trainer and aspiring kinesiologist, who broke down her top tips to maintaining healthy habits this new year.
28
G E T ACT IV E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
START WITH A SMALL HABIT AND MAKE IT SOMETHING YOU ENJOY
HABITS
Think 1-3 things maximum and then give yourself at least a month or two to apply the change. If you like to eat and cook, maybe try a new recipe or browse a cookbook in the library or bookstore for inspiration. If you like fashion, maybe try cleaning out a section of your closet (i.e. tops, bottoms, shoes, etc) to make way for 1 new piece. If you like being outdoors, maybe you try adding in just a 5 minute walk down the road.
IF YOU MISS A DAY, TRY AGAIN
If you miss a day or make a mistake with whatever resolution you’re working on, take that next opportunity to try again. Danielle uses the goal to eat healthier as an example. Health can be interpreted in many different ways but if you can take the small first step of looking at ingredients, that alone can make a world’s difference in the recipe you use so maybe you don’t even have to alter or substitute it. Or if your goal is to snack less but one day you snack more, don’t wave the flag and sabotage your efforts. Take a minute to breathe through the moment and then move on, enjoying the ebb and flow of health instead of going all in or nothing. Starting small allows you to adjust everyday habits that will, with time, transition to lifestyle changes.
CREATE 3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESOLUTIONS
Danielle says to create 1 health resolution, 1 personal resolution, and 1 professional resolution as it is the best format to better yourself in multiple realms instead of just physical health. Too often, we get caught up in this “New Year New Me” mindset and create a list of things you want to change or start doing. But as they get lost in the busy to-do list of life and we forget,
“The new year is a classic kickoff to start fresh and build many resolutions that we all hope stick around.” we can also feel like a failure and revert to “I’ll try again tomorrow or next year.” But what if you don’t have to start over, just keep going.
TRACK YOUR PROGRESS AND VISUALIZE YOUR FUTURE
Whether you keep a notebook of your habit building, or keep track on your phone, it is important to acknowledge the personal progress made. This will also help you see the future that you want to build as you make more desirable changes in your life. If you want to track how you feel after working out, it will serve as a reflection on the progress made through what has been written down. This will encourage you to continue pushing for your goals!

INDOOR PLANT GUIDE Investing in indoor plants can not only spruce up your living space, but also bring numerous health and well-being benefits
Bringing the outdoors in with the use of house plants is a great way to add color and dimension to your space. We sat down with Jesse Nelson at Family Tree Nursery, based in Kansas, and discussed the benefits of incorporating plant life into your home. “There are plenty of studies on the health benefits of plants, and the evidence suggests that being around plants and caring for plant life increases overall wellness,” explains Nelson. “Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of purifying the air.” There are a wide variety of indoor plants that work for any space and light situation that you may have. Regardless if you have a green thumb or a black thumb, there are plant varieties that fit your lifestyle. Here are a few of our favorite indoor plants to incorporate into your home.

ANTHURIUM:
HOPE PEPEROMIA:
Anthurium has gorgeous, colorful flowers and is the easiest indoor flowering plant to care for. It comes in a variety of colors including red, white, orange and purple. Anthurium likes to be dry, so let it go bone dry before watering. Fertilize every so often, especially when blooming. These plants do not like direct sunlight and can be repotted every three to five years.
This cascading plant is gaining popularit y due to its succulent-like leaves and also because it is fairly easy to care for. The Hope Peperomia likes medium to bright direct sunlight. It does well as a tabletop plant or a hanging plant. Watering is only needed one time a month regardless of plant size.
“Anyt im e you b r ing a pl ant into a h om e or work e nv iron m e nt , it ’s going to m a k e you feel bet t e r. It i s going to bea ut if y th e s pa ce in a way th at ar t can n ot , an d th e y a l so h a ve th e a d d ed be n ef it of pur if y ing th e a ir.”
DRACAENA JANET-CRAIG COMPACTA: This is a slow-growing variety that is architectural and compact. This plant is a great statement piece and looks great in an entryway or by a chair. There are a lot of varieties and colors of the Dracaena. They are very resilient in low light and are great for an office space with little or no light. They like to stay on the dry side, so they like to be watered when they are about ½ to ¾ of the way dry. When watering, give it a good soak. Pro tip: A moisture meter can be purchased and used to determine how dry your plant is to help determine when it is time to water again. JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . CHEERS cherries TO CELEBRATE HEALTH, WELLNESS & DRY JANUARY WITH THIS SUPERFOOD MOCKTAIL It’s been said that “life is just a bowl of cherries,” and it just so happens that cherries might improve your life. This nutrient-dense, heart-healthy fruit may lower blood pressure and cholesterol, combat inflammation, help the body manage stress, speed recovery after exercise, balance your mood and help you sleep. To say it is a superfood may be an understatement. So it’s only fitting that we include a mocktail recipe with cherries as the star ingredient this month. Let’s drink to health, wellness and a wonderful year ahead! Cheers!
